Frank L. Vackar
Frank L. Vackar, age 84 of Cuero, died Friday, April 30, 2004.
He was born in Shiner, Texas, to the late Frank and Bettie Kurtz Vackar on March 25, 1920.
He worked for Texas Eastern Transmission Corporation for 32 years; starting in 1953 and retiring in 1985. He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church and Cuero Veterans of Foreign Wars #3972. He attended Shiner and Flatonia Public Schools. He served in the Army during World War II in the 440th AAA AW Battalion. He entered the Army in 1942 and trained in California, Virginia, and Georgia. Served in Europe, awarded Victory, AT, E T Ribbons, GCM and 5 Battle Stars, one being for the Battle of the Bulge, Discharged in 1945.
Survivors are his wife, Gladys Wotipka Vackar of 53 years of Cuero; brother, James Vackar of Flatonia; sister, Catherine Vackar of Columbus and Angie Vackar of Flatonia; daughter, Beverly May Wagner and husband Reed of Cuero; sons, Michael F. Vackar of Houston, Mark D. Vackar of Houston, and Gerald A. Vackar of Bay City; grandchildren, Krista Wagner of Austin and Clayton Wagner of Cuero, Brent Vackar and Nathan Vackar of Houston.
Preceded in death by parents and sister, Agnes Vackar.
Visitation was Sunday, May 2 at Freund Funeral Home. A Rosary was recited Sunday at the funeral home chapel. The funeral Mass was Monday at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Rev. Theresa M. Alsobrooks
Theresa (Rita) M. Alsobrooks, age 55, of Seguin, died on April 30, 2004 in San Antonio.
Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated on Tuesday, May 4 at St. James Catholic Church in Seguin, Rev. Dennis Darilek officiated. Graveside services and interment followed in Holy Cross Cemetery in San Antonio. Visitation was Monday, May 3 at Goetz Funeral Home.
Rita was born on January 6, 1949 to Willard and Constance Dlugosch Mueller.
Survivors include her husband, Ernest L. Alsobrooks; sons, Ashley Alsobrooks and wife Cindy and Gabe Alsobrooks and wife Lisa; grandson, Ryan Alsobrooks; mother, Constance D. (Connie) Mueller; brothers, Jake Mueller Sr. and wife Audrey and Mike Mueller and wife Carolyn; sisters, Vera Tyl and husband Danny Sr. and Sandra J. Norton; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.
She was preceded in death by her father.
Rita will be remembered as a loving and dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, daughter and sister.

Royal T. Brown
Royal T. Brown, 104, of Yorktown, died Sunday, April 25, 2004.
He was born Aug. 26, 1899, in Cuero, to the late Robert and Elizabeth Spies Brown. He was a farmer and member of St. Paul Lutheran Church.
Survivors: daughter, Bernice Glauberg of Victoria; stepson, Paul Geffert of Azles; several grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: first wife, Idella Raetzsch Brown; second wife, Hilda Straube Geffert Brown; son, Royal T. Brown Jr.; stepson, George Geffert; sisters, Elizabeth Blalock, Elva Brown, and Ella Mae Mauer; brothers, Robert Brown, Jimmy Brown, Lewis Brown, and E.G. Brown; and one grandson.

Jacob Benjamin Deal
Jacob Benjamin Deal (Red or Buster, as he was affectionately known) was born Feb. 9, 1922, on Fred Roberts Ranch in Bishop, the only child of Benjamin (Ben) Jacob Deal and Edna Mae Minshew. He went to be with our Lord in the early morning hours of Monday, May 3, 2004, at the age of 82 years, 2 months, and 24 days.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Norma “Dee” DeLilah Sparks Deal; a stillborn infant daughter; his parents; and his beloved step-father, Morris Lee Hamm.
He was raised on a farm outside of Robstown by his mother and step-father. He attended the Bishop schools and then Robstown schools, where he graduated in 1940. While in high school, he served two years in the National Guard. At the start of World War II, he enlisted in the Army Airforce on June 29, 1940, and trained in Cuero and San Antonio as a pilot and airplane mechanic. He proudly served his country during World War II in the European Theater of Operations, flying C47’s over “Camel’s Hump” in Northern Africa, carrying gasoline, ammunition, and supplies, and saw duty in Calcutta, India; Karachi, Pakistan; Cairo, Egypt; and Tampico and Veracruz, Mexico.
Red was a proud American who loved the Lord and always unselfishly put his Lord and family first.
He is survived by his children, Rebecca Yvette Deal Van Cleve (John) of New Braunfels, James Robert Deal (Leslie) of Yorktown, and Teena Rose Deal McGinnis (David Gonzales) of Corpus Christi; brother-in-law, Gerald Hugh Sparks (Meta) of Runge; sister-in-law, Joyce Elaine Sparks Wright of Corpus Christi; grandchildren, Tommy Christopher McGinnis, Elishia Nichole McGinnis, Richard Alan Deal, Dana Michelle Deal Huber (Justin), Colten Jay Randall, Heather Marie Randall, Jon Mikel Baylor Van Cleve; and one great-grandchild, Trenton Lane Deal. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and great nieces who he loved dearly. He had many long time friends for whom he had the utmost respect.
The viewing will be held On Wednesday, May 5 from 6 - 8 p.m. at Lamprecht-Janssen Funeral Home. Services will be Thursday, May 6 at 1 p.m. at the Yorktown Methodist Church. Lamprecht-Janssen Funeral Home, Yorktown.

Milton Roy Gips
Milton Roy Gips passed away April 28, 2004 in Cuero, at the age of 90.
He was born on Jan. 5, 1914 in Yorktown to Paul F. and Antonette Mollenhauer Gips. He graduated from Yorktown High School in 1932 and attended Draughon's Business College in San Antonio. He worked as an accountant in several places and then served in World War II in the European Theater, serving mostly in Belgium. He married Virginia Harris in Corpus Christi, May 27, 1955. He worked for Fishbeck-Moore as an accountant, and he and Virginia worked and lived in various places - Kwajalein in the Marshall Islands - then in Afghanistan, after which they took a trip around the world. They then worked in South Africa and then Tehran, Iran. They returned home in 1979, moving into their home at Hilltop Lakes. He was an avid golfer and was president of the Hilltop Lakes Men's Golf Association.
Milton was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Alvin and Ray.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia Harris Gips of Cuero; brothers Clifton Gips and wife Grace of Cuero; and Paul Gips and wife Lillian of Dallas; sister-in-law Sis Gips of Cuero and multiple nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were Saturday, May 1 at Westside Cemetery, with Rev. Steve Byrne officiated. Arrangements by Lamprecht-Janssen Funeral Home, Yorktown, Texas 361-564-2277.

Alfred R. Kuehn
Alfred R. Kuehn, 89, of Yoakum, died Wednesday, April 28, 2004.
He was born Oct. 2, 1914, to the late Richard and Antonia Haikenwaelder Kuehn. He was a retired meat cutter for Eddie Packing Company and a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church.
Survivors: daughters, Lucille Cochran of Houston, Shirley Kuehn of Yoakum, and Sandra Tate of Cuero; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: wife, Viola Kuehn.

Fernando Artiaga Sr., 99, of Victoria and formerly of Nordheim, died Wednesday, April 28, 2004.
He was born June 3, 1904 to the late Facundo and Celsa Sanchez Artiaga. He was a retired self employed farmer and a Catholic.
Survivors: daughters, Leonor A. Diaz of Telferner, Esberanza A. Salinas of Lamesa, and Rosa A. Gonzales of Victoria; son, Selso Artiaga Sr. of Patricia; 27 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and 10 great great-grandchildren.

Willie P. Fechner
Willie Pearl "Billie" Fechner, 93, of Yorktown, died Sunday, May 2, 2004.
She was born Nov. 13, 1910, in Cuero, to the late Sam and Minnie Smith Kirkland. She was a homemaker and loved to sew.
Survivors: daughters, Jennifer Hughes of Yorktown and Sharlet Metting of Victoria; brother, Sterling Kirkland of Copperas Cove; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two great great-grandchildren.

Annie C. Laake
Annie C. Laake, 91, of Cuero, died Saturday, Oct. 23, 2004.
She was born in Lavaca County on Oct. 9, 1913 to the late Adolph and Emilia Ehler Kremling. She worked at Crescent Valley Creamery and as a cook at the Cuero High School cafeteria. She was a member of the Sons of Hermann, Catholic Daughters, Cuero Fire Department, the Nordheim Fire Department, and St. Michael’s Catholic Church.
She is survived by her daughter, Bernice Pilsner of Nordheim; sister, Mary Laake of Cuero; brother, Ben F. Kremling; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert O. Laake; son, Daniel Lee (Sonny) Laake; parents; sister, Louise Zikuhr; and brothers, Paul, Johnnie, and Elo Kremling.

Henry Landgrebe, 88, of Yorktown, died Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2004.
He was born July 1, 1916, in Weser, to the late Willie and Hulda Borgfeld Landgrebe. He was a retired farmer and member of St. Andrew Lutheran Church.
