Sister Mary Adele Fuchs
Sister Mary Adele Fuchs, RSM (Religious Sister of Mercy) was born in Goliad County on Sept. 6, 1913 to Phillip and Adele Jacobs Fuchs. She was baptized in the Meyersville Catholic Church and given the name Alice Josephine. Her early education was in a one-room school located in Ander. When the time drew near for Alice to go to high school, the family moved to a farm outside of Goliad. Here she attended a parochial school taught by the Sisters of Mercy.
When Alice graduated from high school in 1931 she moved to Laredo to pursue a career in nursing. In January of 1933, her plans changed when she chose to enter the novitiate of the Sisters of Mercy at Webster Groves, Missouri. It was the insight and inspiration of people she met in Laredo that influenced this major change. Her nursing career was only temporarily on hold.
On Aug. 16, 1935, Alice, now known as Sister Mary Adele, made vows as a Sister of Mercy and resumed studies at St. John's School of Nursing, St. Louis, Missouri. Sister was granted a diploma in Nursing Sept. 1937 and she was assigned to general nursing at Mercy Hospital, Brownsville.
During her tenure of twenty-two years at Mercy Hospital, Brownsville, Sister Mary Adele interrupted service to further her education. She received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Incarnate Word College in 1949 and was granted a Masters in Hospital Administration from St. Louis University, St. Louis, Missouri, in 1953.
From 1953-1956, Sister Mary Adele served as Administrator of Mercy Hospital in Brownsville. In 1959, she moved to Laredo, and served as Administrator of the Laredo Hospital until 1966 when she was appointed by the General Government of the Sisters of Mercy to membership of the Provincial Team of the St. Louis Province.
Upon the expiration of two four-year terms on the Provincial Team, Sister Mary Adele was reassigned to Laredo with the commission to build a convent/retirement center for the Sisters of Mercy in South Texas. This was accomplished and the Sisters moved into their new home in October 1975. This convent/home is now serving as an Institute Novitiate for the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas. June 17, 2001, Sister Adele moved to the Sisters of Mercy retirement/healthcare center in St. Louis.
