Arthur Lee Means
Arthur Lee Means, "Art," 71, of Cuero, died Sunday, January 19, 2003. He was born on December 10, 1931 in Cuero to the late Arthur Means Sr. and Arta Massey Means.
Art moved to Brownwood during his teen years and graduated from Brownwood High School and then attended Howard Payne University. He then served 4 years in the U. S. Airforce where he met his wife of 48 years, Sally Rodgers. Art and Sally moved to Cuero in 1955 to assist his father and twin brother, John, in their local furniture and mattress business, Means Furniture. For 42 years he bought and sold new and used furniture until his retirement in 1997. Art was available to people that needed him, whether it was in the middle of the night or during his busy work day. He loved antiques especially his prized clocks and crocks which he would tell endless stories about.
Art enjoyed volunteering. He was current President of the DeWitt County Museum and an active member of the Cuero Lions Club. Whether it was on a work day or on vacation, he took great pride in civic service through the Lions Club and had perfect attendance for 45 years. Art was also a member of the T.P.A. as well as a member of the First Baptist Church of Cuero where he served as a deacon. With his kind words and encouraging spirit Art volunteered along with his wife at the Whispering Oaks Nursing Home. Reminiscing with various folks about old times was a great joy for him. Another of Art's favorite past times was working with his cattle. His love for the land and cattle raising was a hobby and enterprise that kept him strong in mind and body well into his retirement.
Arthur was a great support for his family. He is survived by his loving wife Sally and their three children. His daughter Terrie and her husband Bill Braden reside in Cuero with their two sons John and Willis. Their other daughter Brenda, lives in Palacios with her husband Rodney Girndt and their children Jordan and Andrea along with her fiance Kyle Wallis. Arthur III, their youngest son, and his wife Cindy live in Gonzales with their two sons Reid and Thomas. He is also survived by his sisters, Sybil Akins of Dallas and Beatrice Boone of Stratton, and his uncle Tom Benbow of Yoakum.
Art is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, John Means. Art always wanted the best for others and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
