John A. McMichen

John Arett McMichen, 92, of Cuero, died Saturday, October 19, 2002.
He was born May 29, 1910, in Mart, to the late Taylor and Mina Walkup McMichen. He served in the U.S. Army and received a bachelor's degree from Hardin-Simmons University. He also received a master's degree from North Texas State University. He taught school for 37 years, serving as a band director in Huntsville, Lampasas, and Kountze, and teaching high school and junior high school English in Cuero.
Survivors: son, Charles T. McMichen of Houston; and niece, Joann Huenergarth of Ruidoso Downs, New Mexico.
Preceded in death by: wife, Retha Mae Scott McMichen; parents; sister, Mona M. Faulk; and brother, Charles S. McMichen.
Graveside services were Monday, October 21 at Oakwood Cemetery in Huntsville, Rev. Carroll Pickett officiated. Freund Funeral Home, Cuero, 361-275-2343.
Memorials: donor's choice.

Homer H. Berner

Homer H. Berner, 73, Longtime editor of The Cuero Record and Author of "Who Gives a Hoot" better known as " The Hooter" died Saturday, October 12, 2002 after a lengthy illness.
He was born January 27, 1929 to Homer W. and Walsie Pearl Berner of Augusta, Kansas. He served in the US Army during the occupation of Japan until his discharge.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Shirley of Augusta, Kansas formerly of Cuero; daughters and sons-in-law, Kay and Paul Trotta of DeQueen, Ar., and Gail and Everett Harcrow of New Braunfels; 11 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held October 15, 2002 at the First Christian Church in Augusta, Kansas.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to: The First Presbyterian Church in Cuero.

Edgar Breitkreutz

Edgar Breitkreutz, 90, of Cuero, died Saturday, October 12, 2002.
He was born Jan. 21, 1912, in Shiner, to the late Adolph and Johanna Hinerich Breitkreutz. He was a tax assessor for Cuero ISD and the city of Cuero. He was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church.
Survivors: wife, Ella Pietsch Breitkreutz; daughters, Ruth King of Corpus Christi and Barbara Campbell of College Station; son, the Rev. Vernon Breitkreutz of Boerne; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: parents; sisters, Selma Breitkreutz and Hilda Breitkreutz; and brother, Walter Breitkreutz.
Services were Wednesday, October 15 at Freund Funeral Home chapel, Rev. Steve Byrne officiated. Burial was at Hillside Cemetery. Freund Funeral Home, Cuero, 361-275-2343.

Elizabeth Benson

Elizabeth Benson, 87, of Cuero, died Sunday, October 13, 2002.
She was born August 6, 1915, in Humbolt, Tenn., to the late Jon M. and Lizzie Bell Moody Campbell. She was a winder for Lone Star Textile Mill and a member of First Baptist Church.
Survivors: nieces, Glenda Henry of Westhoff, Jo Lynn Henry and Dana Henry, both of Houston and Susan Reynolds of Cuero; and nephews, Rory Henry of Conroe, Steve Henry of Austin, Randy Henry of Cuero, Gerald Campbell of Magnolia and Errol Campbell of Baytown.
Preceded in death by: husband, Robert Benson; parents; and brother, John M. Campbell.
Visitation was Wednesday, October 16 at Freund Funeral Home chapel. Services were Thursday at the funeral home chapel, Rev. Dr. Glenn Robertson officiated. Burial was at Hillside Cemetery. Freund Funeral Home, Cuero, 361-275-2343.

Sophie M. Jendrzey

Sophie Monica Jendrzey, 98, of Yorktown, died Tuesday, October 15, 2002.
She was born May 4, 1904, in Yorktown, to the late John and Mary Sprencel Biemer. She was a homemaker and a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church.
Survivors: daughters, Helen Hudson of San Antonio and Irene Barma of Yorktown; 13 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: husband, John Jendrzey; sons, Edward L Jendrzey and Raymond V. Jendrzey; parents; sisters, Ursula Warzecha and Carrie Schlindler; brothers, Mike Biemer, Alois Biemer, Flix Biemer and Louise Biemer; and one grandchild.
A rosary was recited Wednesday, October 16 at Lamprecht-Janssen Funeral Home chapel. Services were Thursday at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Rev. Peter Kaplinski officiated. Burial was at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery. Lamprecht-Janssen Funeral Home, Yorktown, 361-564-2277.

Ruth Schuenemann

Ruth Schuenemann, 77, of Yorktown, died Thursday, October 17, 2002.
She was born June 28, 1925, in Yorktown, to the late Edwin and Opal Elizabeth Billings Becker. She was a homemaker/musician and a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church.
Survivors: niece, Sharon Matejek of Yorktown; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Preceded in death by: husband, Robert Hilmer Schuenemann; son, Thomas R. Schuenemann; and parents.
Visitation was Saturday, October 18 at Lamprecht-Janssen Funeral Home chapel. Services were Sunday at the funeral home chapel, Rev. Patti Byrne officiated. Burial was at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery. Lamprecht-Janssen Funeral Home, Yorktown, 361-564-2277.

Mildred Arnold

Mildred Arnold, 82, of Yorktown, died Wednesday, October 2, 2002.
She was born in Weser on November 29, 1919 to the late Basiel and Emilie Zengerle Dreyer. She was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters of Auxiliary, and a 4-H Leader. She was a homemaker.
She is survived by daughters, Doris Waskow of Meyersville, Claudia Deborah of Beaumont, and Barbara Audilet of Yorktown; son, Raymond Arnold of Meyersville; sister, Alice Onken of San Antonio; brother, Victor Dreyer of Plano; 9 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by husband, Claude P. Arnold; parents; sister, Helen Woytasczyk; and brother, Leonard Dreyer.
Visitation was Friday, October 4 at Freund Funeral Home. A rosary was said Friday at the funeral home. Funeral services were Saturday at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Meyersville, the Rev. Michael Peterin officiated. Burial was at Sts Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery in Meyersville. Freund Funeral Home, Cuero, 361-275-2343.

Ruth Abel

Ruth Abel, 81, of Yorktown, died Monday, June 24, 2002.
She was born August 31, 1920, in Yorktown, to the late Willie A. and Elizabeth Sievers Eckert. She was a retired nurse's aid at Yorktown Hospital and had worked for the nursing home in Yorktown and in Point Comfort. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and of the Marion Circle at the church.
Survivors: daughters, Judy Wolpman of Yorktown and Mary Beth Domann of Victoria; son, John Abel of Victoria; sisters, Alleen Layer and Lou Ella Harmon, both of San Antonio; ten grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and seven step-great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: husband, Archie Abel; daughter, Loys Jendrzey; brother, David Eckert; and parents.
Family visitation was Tuesday, June 25 at Lamprecht-Janssen Funeral Home chapel.
Services were Wednesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church. Burial was at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery. Lamprecht-Janssen Funeral Home, Yorktown, 361-564-2277.

Susanna Dicke

Susanna "Susie" Dicke, 84, of Cuero, died Monday, June 24, 2002.
She was born Dec. 7, 1917, in Uvalde County.
Survivors: daughter, Glee Davis of Cuero; son, George Dicke of San Marcos; sister, Selma Dicke of Uvalde; brother, John Langner of Uvalde; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: husband, Herman H. Dicke; sons, Edwin Dicke and Dan Dicke; sisters, Annie Meyer, Gertrude Wagner, Erna Crenshaw and Helen Crumbley; and brothers, Gus Langner, Henry Langner and Ernest Langner.
Services were Thursday, June 27 at Rushing-Estes-Knowles chapel, the Rev. Daryl Knox officiated. Burial was at Knippa Cemetery. Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary, Uvalde, 830-278-5611.

Catilda F. Vasquez

Catilda F. Vasquez, 78, of Cuero, died Tuesday, June 25, 2002.
She was born Oct. 17, 1923, in Meyersville, to the late Leandro Jr. and Elvira Longoria Flores. She was a homemaker and a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church.
Survivors: daughters, Rachel Loa and Mary Luico, both of Victoria, Gloria Ypina of Lamesa, Della Longoria of Pettus, Theresa Vasquez of Cuero, Elvira Canchola of San Antonio, Josie Cardinale of California, Rosa Vasquez of Seguin and Margie Vasquez of Austin; sons, Mike Vasquez of College Station, Guadalupe Vasquez of San Antonio, Antonio Vasquez of Huntsville and Henry Vasquez of Victoria; sisters, Ophelia Garcia of Cuero and Ernestina Gutierrez of Edna; brothers, Louis Flores of Brownsville and Henry Flores of Cuero; 42 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and 28 great-great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: husband, Francisco Vasquez; sons, Rodolfo Vasquez and Francisco Vasquez; parents; and sister, Saldina Vasquez.

Christine Gawlik Warwas, 96, of Cuero, died Thursday, June 27, 2002.
She was born March 2, 1906, in Karnes County, to the late Henry and Susan Skloss Gawlik. She was a homemaker and member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Meyersville.
Survivors: sons, Victor Warwas and Lambert Warwas, both of Cuero; sister, Isabella Warwas of Cuero; brother, Henry Gawlik of Victoria; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: husband, Paul Warwas; son, Daniel Warwas; sister, Veronica Biemer; brothers, Jerome Gawlik, Alois Gawlik and John Gawlik; parents; and grandson, Mitchell Allen Warwas.

Dorothy Diebel

Dorothy Diebel, 82, of Meyersville, died Sunday, June 30, 2002.
She was born October 4, 1919, in Meyersville, to the late Adolph and Melanie Behrens Diebel. She worked in agriculture and was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Meyersville.
Survivors: sister-in-law, Dorothy Fay Diebel of Meyersville; three nephews, David Diebel and wife Martha, Kenneth Diebel and wife Betty, ad Clifford Diebel and wife Meri; three great-nieces, Lesley Diebel, Julie Ohrt, and Lindsey Diebel; and three great-nephews, Brian Diebel, Shawn Diebel, and Ryan Diebel.
Preceded in death by: parents; and brother, Delmar J. Diebel.
