Allie Mathis
Allie "Sonny" Mathis, 82, of Cuero, passed away Thursday, June 19, 2003.
He was born September 13, 1920, in DeWitt County, to the late Lott Mathis and Ruth Ella Hopkins. He was a pressman for The Cuero Record for 30 years and served in the U. S. Army during World War II.
Survivors: wife, Erma Jean Dailey Mathis; daughters, Katherine Newman and Kathleen Mathis, both of Cuero; sisters, Ceola Hopkins and Carrie Brown, both of Cuero, and Erma English of Victoria; brother, Lott Mathis of Cuero; and one grandchild.
Preceded in death by: parents; four sisters; and four brothers.
Services were Saturday, June 21 at Freund Funeral Home Chapel, the Bro. Anthony Dow officiated. Burial was at Lockhart Cemetery. Freund Funeral Home, Cuero, 361-275-2343.

Laura Trungale
Laura "Miki" Trungale, 36, of Arneckeville, died Sunday, June 15, 2003.
She was born July 18, 1966 in Wichita Falls, to Brian Trungale of Arneckeville and the late Juanita Peacock Trungale.
Survivors: husband, Wayne C. Wright; son, Christopher James Trungale of Devine; father; brother, Joey Trungale of Arneckeville; grandparents, Dale and Lola Parkinson of Dacosta and Ilse Anderson of Adams, Wisconsin.
Preceded in death by: mother; and grandfathers, Joseph P. Trungale and James Peacock.

James G. Audilet
James Glen Audilet, 34, of Victoria, died Sunday, June 15, 2003.
He was born November 7, 1968, in Yorktown, to James L. Audilet of Cuero and Betty Smart Toman of New York. He was a plumber for Roto-Rooter Plumbing and member of First Christian Church Disciples of Christ. He was a 1988 graduate of Yorktown High School.
Survivors: wife, Linda Perez Audilet; daughter, Dana Dakota Audilet of Victoria; sons, Dustin James Carter and Dallas James Audilet, both of Victoria; parents; step-mother, Vernel Audilet of Cuero; and sisters, Dana Rodgers of Corpus Christi, Wanda Barrier of Pleasanton, Lisa Toman of Houston, Tiffany Fogle of San Antonio, and Laska Fogle of North Dakota.

Elvin Steen
Elvin Steen, 83, of Houston, passed away on Wednesday, June 11, 2003.
Elvin Steen was born in DeWitt County on February 11, 1920 to Jim and Della Steen. He was the fourth child of five children Mildred Steen, Doris Steen Brown, Sylvia Jerline Steen-Neal, and brother R. A. Steen; his half sisters, Minnie Lee James and Fannie Mae Mollett (all have preceded him in death).
He professed a hope in Christ on Easter Sunday in 1932 and later became a member of Jerusalem Baptist Church in Houston.
Elvin Steen helped take care of his family after his father passed away and started a Taxi service in Cuero at age 25. He moved to Houston, working for himself starting a Body and Welding business which later turned into Steen's Truck Service.
He leaves to mourn his passing a host of relatives, friends, and extended families. We will forever cherish the memory of his love. Thank you for the many comforting messages, prayers and expression of kindness.
His last biblical phase spoken while in Hermann Hospital was, "My help and strength cometh from the Lord."

Edwin William Meier
Edwin William Meier, 79, of Uvalde, passed away June 19, 2003 at Uvalde Memorial Hospital.
He was born on January 23, 1924 in Phillipsburg to the late Eugene Albert and Barbara Julianna (Trimpler) Meier. He received battle stars for the Battle of Northern France, Normandy, Central Europe, and Rhineland during World War II. s a life-long member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Knippa. He was a member of the Church Council, an usher, and was very active in the church. He married Elvira Schroeder on January 14, 1949 in Knippa.
He is survived by his wife; daughters, Ellen Carter and husband Norm and Cynthia Duvall and husband Bill, all of San Antonio, and Marcia Wallace and husband Gene of Grapevine; brother, Ernest Meier and wife Evelyn of Cuero; grandsons, Donald Carter and wife Meighan and John Duvall, all of San Antonio, Brandon Rodgers of Kaufman, and Matthew Wallace of Bandera; granddaughter, Julia Carter of San Antonio; great-granddaughter, Kyra Carter of San Antonio; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Wilma Meier Koehler; and brother, Eugene A. Meier.
Family visitation was Saturday, June 21 at Rushing-Estes-Knowles Chapel in Uvalde. Services were Sunday at Knippa Emmanuel Lutheran Church, the Rev. Daniel Schorlemer officiated. Interment was at Knippa Cemetery. Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary, Uvalde, 830-278-5611.
Elenora Jendrzey
Elenora Jendrzey, 83, of Yorktown, died Saturday, June 21, 2003.
She was born February 20, 1920, in Panna Maria, to the late Albert and Kate Dugi Kaczmarek. She was a homemaker and a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church.
Survivors: sons, Leon P. Jendrzey of Karnes City, Alvin C. Jendrzey of Cuero, Lambert Jendrzey of Panna Maria, and Bennie Jendrzey of Yorktown; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Preceded in death by: husband, Leon P. Jendrzey Sr.; parents; sister, Monica Pollock; and brothers, Robert Kaczmarek, Ben "Franklin" Kaczmarek, Louis Kaczmarek, and Clement Kaczmarek.

Louis F. Grunder
Louis F. Grunder, 82, of Cuero, died Thursday, Sept. 2, 2004.
He was born Jan. 1, 1922 in Cuero to the late Louis I. and Emma Smith Grunder. He retired from Brentex Mills in Cuero, was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus #1582.
Louis was in the US Navy from April 1940 to June 1944, serving aboard the USS Pennsylvania at Pearl Harbor. He was a member of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association and a lifetime member of the Cuero VFW #3972. He served as VFW All American Commander from 1989 to 1990 and received honors at the National Award ceremony in Baltimore, Maryland that year.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Elorine Schlinke Grunder of Cuero; daughter, Karen Dunn and her husband, Miles, of Victoria; sons, Robert Grunder and wife, Pat, of Cuero and Mike Grunder and wife, Janice, of Brenham. Also, his grandchildren, Wes Dunn, Amanda Dunn, Matt Grunder, Meghan Grunder and Bailey Grunder; one brother, Dr. William "Bill" Grunder of Eugene, Oregon; and one sister, Helen Pugh of George West.
He was preceded in death by sisters, Emma Cravens, Frances Dromgoole, Margerite and Beatrice Grunder; and brothers, Joe C., James N., and John T. Grunder.
A rosary was recited Friday, Sept. 3 at Freund Funeral Home. Services were Saturday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Cuero, with the Rev. Johnson Owusu-Boateng officiating. Burial followed at Lindenau Cemetery. Freund Funeral Home, Cuero, 361-275-2343 was in charge of arrangements.

James G. Hankins
James G. Hankins, 83, of Yorktown, died Monday, Aug. 30, 2004.
He was born Nov. 12, 1920, in Robstown, to the late William Martin and Flora Mary Harris Hankins. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of the VFW and the American Legion. He was an electrician and plumber and a member of First Baptist Church.
Survivors: brother, Eli Hankins of Houston; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: wife, Marie Hankins; daughter, Joyce H. Hankins-Ricer; son, James G. Hankins; sisters, Mildred Hankins-Pinson and Elizabeth Hankins-Smith; and brothers, Morris Hankins, Samuel Hankins, and Willie Hankins.

Carlton “Carl” Sparck
Carlton “Carl” Sparck, 65, of Colonie, New York, died Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2004, at the Community Hospice Inn at St. Peter’s Hospital, Albany, New York, after a long illness.
The husband of Amelia “Molly” Siiss Sparck, he was born in Yorktown to the late W. J. and Caroline Thieme Sparck. A resident of the Albany area since 1983, Carl also had resided in Liverpool, New York, and North Syracuse, New York, for several years. He served in the US Air Force in the early 1960s and was stationed in Japan, St. Albans, Vermont, and Hancock Air Force Base in Syracuse.
Mr. Sparck was a phone representative with the NYS Department of Taxation and Finance for 15 years, retiring in 2000. He previously was employed by Kemper Insurance In Syracuse and Albany.
Carl was a member of the Colonie Alliance Church of the Christian & Missionary Alliance in Albany, where he served as Elder, Trustee, and Vice Chairman of the Governing Board; Chairman of the Missions Committee; and a former scout master of BSA Troop 92, in North Syracuse, for ten years.
Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Linda “Lin” Sparck of Syracuse and Patricia Sparck Fragola of Providence, Rhode Island; and two brothers, Darwin (Rosie) Sparck of Yorktown and Vernon (Jeanette) Sparck of Weesatche. Besides his parents he was preceded by his guardians, August and Ellen Helmers.
Funeral services were Friday, Sept. 3 at Colonie Alliance Church in Albany, with Pastor Keith A. Hobson Sr. officiating. Interment was in Liverpool Cemetery, Liverpool, New York. Bowen Funeral Home, Latham, New York, 518-273-4162.

Alvin J. Rath Sr.
Alvin J. Rath Sr., 95, of Cuero, died Thursday, Sept. 2, 2004.
He was born March 12, 1909, in DeWitt County, to the late Albert J. and Bertha Koenig Rath. He was a farmer and rancher and a member of Knights of Columbus Council No. 1682, Green DeWitt Community Club, Golly Community Club, and DeWitt County Pecan Growers Associating. He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church.
Survivors: sons, A .J. Rath Jr. of Wharton, William A. "Bill" Rath of Victoria, and Jerry Rath of Cuero; 12 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: wife, Alice Bitterly Rath; infant daughter; son, Newton J. Rath; and brother, Erwin Rath Sr.

Ch. (Ret.) Lt. Col. Nicholas E. Wagner
Ch. (Ret.) Lt. Col. Nicholas Emil Wagner, 60, of Hallettsville, died Sunday, Sept. 5, 2004.
He was born Jan. 8, 1944 in St. Paul, Minnesota, to the late Alfred and Clara Hoppe Wagner. He served in the U.S. Army for 13 years then the Reserves for a total of 28 years. Rev. Wagner held a Master of Theology and a MAsters of Teaching. He was a Lutheran Minister at St. John Lutheran Church in Meyersville.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Allquist Wagner; daughters Deborah Kae Wagner Rayburn of Meyersville and Sarah Ann Wagner of Pensacola, Florida; son, Keith Andrew Wagner of San Diego, California; brother, Wayne Wagner of White Bear Lake, Minnesota; and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Jerry Hanys, 84, of Cuero, died Saturday, Sept. 4, 2004.
He was born in Sweet Home on Aug. 27, 1920 to the late M. A. and Mollie Kunetka Hanys. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was an operator at the Cuero Gin and Feed Store.
He is survived by his son, Jerry Michael Hanys, and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Tennie B. Valigura Hanys and parents.
