Vera C. Baker
ODESSA — Lovingly known to those closest to her as “Punt, ” she will be remembered as a giving mother and a caring grandmother.
Punt passed away Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, at Medical Center Hospital with her family by her side. Punt was born Veronica Carolyn Baker on Jan. 26, 1922, in George West to Henry and Mary Hadamek.
On Aug. 22, 1942, Vera married Joseph Jesse Baker, who preceded her in death Nov. 9, 1969.
Punt moved to Odessa with her family in 1958 from McCamey. During this time, she worked as a telephone operator for Southwestern Bell. After 31 fulfilling years, Vera enjoyed her well-earned retirement with her family and friends near her. Punt always has a genuine concern for and interest in each of us that will be appreciated for many years to pass.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Frank and Joe; and sisters, Dolores and Bertha.
She leaves behind her son, Michael J. Baker; daughter-in-law, Mary Jo Baker; two grandchildren, Shannon Baker and Joseph Baker of Odessa; three brothers, Dave Hadamek of Pleasanton, Daniel Hadamek of Beeville and John Hadamek of Ruidoso, N.M.; and a sister, Cecilia Steffens of Buhl, Idaho.
There will be no local services. Vera will be laid to rest with a graveside service at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at Gussettville cemetery in Gussettville with her son, Mike Baker, officiating.
In lieu of flowers, we kindly request memorials be made to Faith Community Church, P.O. Box 69689, Odessa, Texas, 79769.

R.C. Cavender
ODESSA — R.C. Cavender, 78, of Odessa passed away Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, at his residence. He was born Aug. 4, 1923, in San Angelo. He married Mattie Sue Little on June 26, 1949, in San Angelo. Mr. Cavender moved to Odessa in 1955 from San Angelo. He was a retired maintenance man for the Ector County Independent School District. During World War II, he served in Patton’s Third Army Infantry. He served in five major battles, including the Battle of the Bulge. He was Baptist.
He is survived by his wife, Mattie Cavender of Odessa; two sons, Stephen Cavender of Austin and John Cavender of Odessa; daughter, Susan Benefield and husband Dale of Odessa; and seven grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. today, Jan. 25, 2002, at Sunset Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Rick Alkire officiating.
Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

Joe Robert Coronel
ODESSA — Joe Robert Coronel, 21 years of age, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, at Medical Center Hospital. He was born Sept. 24, 1980, in West Covina, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Carlos Manuel Estrada and Lorenzo and Blanca Coronel.
Joe is survived by his mother, Olga Leticia Estrada Melendez of Odessa; father, Joe Coronel of Odessa; brother, Raymond Coronel of Odessa; and sister, Kimberly Irene Coronel of Odessa.
Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. today at Odessa Funeral Home Chapel. Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church with the Rev. Pablo Tiong officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Angel Estrada, Carlos Estrada, Lorenzo Coronel, Joe Minjarez, Carlos Segura and Eric Ramirez.
Services by Odessa Funeral Home.

Dorothy Nell Lee
ODESSA — Dorothy Nell Lee, age 86, died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2002, in De Soto. She was born March 11, 1915, in Coushatta, La., to David and Elvira Watson.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at St. James Baptist Church with the Rev. R.T. McNeil officiating. Interment will follow at Rose Hill cemetery. The family will be receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors.
Mrs. Lee graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in Dallas with honors. She married R.L. Lee in April 1946, and they moved to Odessa. She was a member of St. James Baptist Church and held numerous positions within the church, including deaconess. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Her husband, R.L. Lee, preceded her in death in 1990. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Ann Shephard; a grandson, Bruce O’Bannon; and a great-grandchild, Candace Williams.
She is survived by a daughter, Virginia S. Cole of Dallas; grandchildren, Ricky E. Williams of Carlsbad, N.M., Bernadine Williams of Dallas, Danny McCullough of Dallas, Ervin F. Williams of Odessa and Devia M. Blanton of Odessa; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Bill Turner
ODESSA — Billy Ray Turner, 69, passed away Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002, while on a cruise in the Caribbean. He was born May 14, 1932, in Idalou to Denzel Russell Turner and Cora Humphries Turner. He married the love of his life, Ruth Nitcholas, Sept. 20, 1952, in Idalou.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. today, Jan. 25, 2002, at Crescent Park Baptist Church with Dr. Johnny Dickerson officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens under the direction of Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
Bill was drafted into the Army in 1952. After leaving the service, he attended Texas Tech University where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in accounting, ranking second in his class and then earning his certified public accountant certificate. He and Ruth moved to El Paso with their son Tommy in June 1958. They moved to Odessa in December 1958 as Bill often said, “With a half worn out half paid-for car, a kid and a half, a trailer full of junk furniture and $200.” He worked for Urbane Childers with whom he later formed Childers and Turner. After Mr. Childers retired, Bill and Burt Ferguson formed Turner, Ferguson and Co., which received awards for being one of the top small-to-medium regional accounting firms in the U.S.
Giving back to the community was very important to Bill. He was on the board of directors of The Fireman’s Pension Fund, Myer’s Drilling, Odessa Oil Investments and many others. Bill was the chairman of the Appraisal District for Ector County for 20 years and served on the Ector County Independent School Board for 12 years. He was a Jaycee, a longtime member of the Odessa Chamber of Commerce and was active in many other civic organizations. He was treasurer at Crescent Park Baptist Church, where he also served as a deacon.
Bill and Ruth loved to travel and after his retirement were able to travel even more than before. The most important things in Bill’s life were his faith and his family. He adored his wife, Ruth, and often said his hobby was “spoiling Ruth.” He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, and they arranged their travel plans to accommodate the grandchildren’s activities. They bought a house in Ruidoso and loved to spend time there either alone or with the kids and grandkids. He treasured their many friends. Bill was a caretaker. He quietly took care of the vulnerable, the young, the old and the needy.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his grandson, Brett Ryan Turner, who died at the age of 3 with cancer.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Theda Ruth Nitcholas Turner; his children, Tommy Turner and wife Lin of Midland, Beth Turner Libson and her husband Dr. David Libson of Odessa and David Russell Turner and his wife Jami of Odessa. He is also survived by two sisters, Polly Turner of Idalou and Sue Kelly of Odessa, and his beloved grandchildren, Jennifer Turner Smith and her husband Kyle of San Antonio, Katie Libson, Laura Libson, Christy Libson, Alexandra Turner, Emily Turner and Miles Turner of Odessa.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Crescent Park Baptist Church Building Fund, 3002 E. University Blvd., Odessa, Texas, 79761.
“He has achieved success, who has worked well, laughed often and loved much.” From that definition you are the most successful man we will ever meet in every way possible. Go with God. We love you.

Jean Bernice 'Bernie' Wysong
ODESSA — Bernice Wysong, 73, of Odessa passed away Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, after a short illness.
She worked at Gibson’s many years, retired from Albertson’s and also worked for Clover House. Bernie, as she was best known, worked at Albertson’s in the camera department where she delivered many smiles. She was a hard worker with much compassion and concern for all those she came in contact with over the many years of public service. Bernice brought life to everything she touched and was one that could turn the worst of times into one of thought and character. She was the best “Grammy.” Many children over the years were fortunate enough to share in their life. Her sharp wit, good character and motherly advice will be greatly treasured and missed.
Bernice’s body had become very tired over the years, and our Lord called her home to rest. She has been met at the pearly gates by many of her friends and relatives who will now share in what those of us have had for all these many great years.
We love you mother, grandma, sister, aunt, niece and friend. Your loving smile will forever be seen in the stars above.
Bernice was preceded in death by her husband, Mickey Wysong; parents, Allen and Ruth Barnett; sister, V.E. Brown; and brother, Ray Barnett.
She is survived by her son, Mike Wysong of Odessa; daughters, Bonnie Erwin and husband Larry of Odessa, Debbie Breckles and husband Brian of Gardendale and Pam Thomas of Odessa; brother, Alton Barnett and wife Dora Lee of Odessa; sisters, Tootsie Jones of Comanche, Okla., and Durlene Morris and husband John of Odessa; sister-in-law, Ann Barnett of Odessa; 13 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Odessa Funeral Home.
Funeral services have been set for 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at Odessa Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. David Howard officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Savannah Georgia Starnes Boyles
ODESSA — Savannah Georgia Starnes Boyles, 80, of San Angelo, formerly of Farmington, N.M., passed away peacefully Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, at her home.
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. today, Jan. 25, 2002, at Sunset Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Roger Roenfeldt, chaplain of Vista Care Hospice, officiating. Arrangements are by Johnson’s Funeral Home.
Survivors include her son, Tom E. Boyles and his family of Yorba Linda, Calif.; brother, Bill Harris and wife Linda of Odessa; nephew, Billy James and wife Jerri of Port Lavaca; a great-niece, Penny Gipson and husband Kevin of San Angelo and their children Shayna and Dakota Gipson; and a great-nephew, Billy E. Boland of Laredo and his sons Jon and Austin Boland.

Buster Bain
CLARENDON — Buster R. Bain, 69, of Amarillo, a former salesman for Conley-Lott-Nichols in Odessa, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, in Amarillo.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Robertson Funeral Directors Chapel of Memories with Richard Dickerson officiating. Burial will be at Citizens cemetery. Arrangements by Robertson Funeral Directors.
He was born in Clarendon and had been a resident of Odessa for 25 years before moving to Amarillo. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He was Baptist.
SURVIVORS: Wife, Frankye Bain of Amarillo; sons, Phil Bain of McKinney and Regan Bain of Cedar Hill; daughter, Jacque Lopez of Duncanville; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Kenneth Bivins
MONAHANS — Kenneth Clarence Bivins, 69, of Odessa, an oilfield laborer, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, at his residence.
Graveside services will be at 3:30 p.m. today at Monahans Memorial cemetery Pavilion with the Rev. Dr. Jimmy Braswell officiating. Arrangements by Memorial Services.
He was born in Bristow, Okla., and had been a resident of Monahans.
SURVIVORS: Daughters, Robin Acosta of Eunice, N.M., and Cindy Kennedy of Odessa; brothers, Gene Bivins of Midland, Jerry Bivins of Jacksboro and Lester Bivins of Mineral Wells; sister, Viola Hobbs of Missouri; and two grandchildren.

May Bush
PECOS — May Jarine Bush, 91, of Pecos, a retired businesswoman, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, at her residence.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Christian Church with the Rev. Greer Willis officiating. Burial will be at Mount Evergreen cemetery. Arrangements by Pecos Funeral Home.
She was born in Graford and was a lifelong resident of Pecos. She was Christian.
SURVIVORS: Daughters, Sharon B. St. Clair of Abilene and Gwen Geltemeyer of Midland; and five grandchildren.

Todd De La Garza
CRANE — Todd De La Garza, 47, of Crane, a police officer for Temple College in Temple, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, at Scott and White Hospital in Temple.
Mass will be celebrated at 2:30 p.m. today at Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be at the Crane County cemetery. Arrangements by Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home.
He was born in New Orleans and was a longtime resident of Crane. He was Catholic.
SURVIVORS: Wife, Oralia De La Garza of Crane; and brother, Toby De La Garza of Austin.
