Sonny Phelps
ODESSA — Sonny Phelps of Missouri City, Texas, loving husband and father and proud grandfather, went home to be with the Lord on Aug. 3, 2002, at the age of 56.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 10, 2002, at Temple Baptist Church with Dr. Griffin Jones officiating. Graveside services will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Sonny was born Nov. 13, 1945, in Bakersfield, Calif., to Thurston H. Phelps Sr. and Juanita Phelps, but always called Odessa his home. He was a graduate of Odessa High School and Odessa College.
Sonny married
Jerry Thacker on January 1, 1966, and they raised two sons, Thomas and Tony Phelps. Sonny was a fourteen-year veteran of the United States Air Force and was a devoted employee of Chevron-Texaco for the past 22 years. Sonny had a servant’s heart and lived every day devoted to his family while constantly helping others. “PaPa Sonny” or “Pop” also enjoyed spending time with two granddaughters and a grandson, who were the joys of his life.
Sonny was preceded in death by his father, Thurston H. Phelps Sr.; sister, Diana Gail Thacker; fathers-in-law, Lloyd E. Thacker and O.C. “Red” Hartman; and nephew, Chris Alexander.
Survivors include his wife, Jerry of Missouri City; sons, Thomas Phelps of Abilene and Tony Phelps of Denton; daughters-in-law, Stacy Phelps of Abilene and Lisa Phelps of Denton; grandchildren, Toni and Brady Phelps of Abilene and Landry Phelps of Denton; mother, Juanita Phelps of Andrews mother-in-law, Lorene Hartman of Odessa; brother, Eddie Phelps of Portland; brothers-in-law, Jim Thacker of Odessa and Joe Thacker of Snyder; and sister-in-law, Judy Howk of Okemah, Oklahoma, as well as numerous nephews and nieces.
The family will receive visitors from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

Gilberto Rodriguez
ODESSA — Gilberto Rodriguez, 67, passed away Tuesday, August 6, 2002, at his residence in Odessa.
He was born June 26, 1935, in Ojinaga, Chihuahua, Mexico, to Manuel and Serveriana (Perez) Rodriguez.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, August 9, 2002, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Cerafin Avenido officiating. Burial will follow at the Ector County cemetery. Visitation will be today from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. at Martinez Funeral Home.
He is survived by his wife, Alicia Rodriguez of Odessa; daughters, Naira Ivon Medrano and Luz Marie Rodriguez, both of Odessa, and Socorro Alicia Rodriguez of Denver, Colo.; sons, Manuel Fernando Rodriguez, Victor Hugo Rodriguez and Hector Mario Rodriguez, all of Odessa, and Gilberto Rodriguez Jr. of Presidio; brother, Jose De La Luz Rodriguez of Ojinaga; Elfida Rodriguez of Chihuahua; 16 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Joaquin Saenz
ODESSA — Joaquin Saenz, 67, of Odessa, an oil company medal specialist, died Monday, Aug. 5, 2002, at his residence.
Services will be held at 12 p.m. today at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Cerafin Avenido officiating. Burial will be at Rose Hill cemetery. Arrangements by Martinez Funeral Home.
He was born in Santa Barbara, Mexico. He was Catholic.
He is survived by his wife, Zenaida R. De Saenz of Odessa; daughters, Lorenza P. Rodriguez, Blanca Isela Sanchez and Angela Saenz Rodriguez, all of Odessa; sons, Juan Carlos Saenz Rodriguez and Joaquin Saenz Rodriguez, both of Odessa, Jesus Manuel Saenz Rodriguez of La Paz, Calif., and Jerardo Javier Saenz Rodriguez of Juarez, Mexico; 22 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Ronnie Allen Jr.
ODESSA — Ronald “Ronnie” Ray Allen Jr., 19, of Odessa died Monday, May 6, 2002, at Medical Center Hospital.
He was born Feb. 26, 1983, in Andrews to Ron and Dana Allen. Ronnie was raised in Odessa. He attended Odessa schools. He showed his love for reading by being the top accelerated reader for ECISD for three years in a row at Crockett Junior High. He was a member of the JROTC at Odessa High School.
Ronnie was an avid boy scout. He loved promoting canoe and camping trips. He loved being a big brother to the younger scouts and enjoyed working at the scout ranch in Fort Davis. He was an American Red Cross volunteer from the age of 15.
Ronnie joined the Army Reserves at the age of 17 and attended basic training at Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C. There, he was awarded by the commanding general the marksmanship award for a perfect 40/40 shot. He was the sixth person in the 240-year history of Fort Jackson to achieve this honor. He attended AIT at Fort Lee in Virginia. Ronnie was awarded the Army Service Ribbon and promoted in April to private first class. He loved the U.S. Army very much.
Ronnie was preceded in death by two grandfathers, Dan Turman and Raymond Allen; a grandmother, Leila Allen; and a cousin, Steven Turman.
He is survived by his parents, Ron and Dana Allen of Odessa, and three sisters, Cindy Stockton of Tucson, Ariz., Janet L. Hawkins of Midland and Staci Allen of Houston. He also had two half siblings, Amenda and Mack Poindexter of Ozona. He has one surviving grandmother, Jean Turman of Odessa; two uncles, Ronnie Turman of Casper, Wyo., and Lin Turman of Odessa; one aunt, Judy Wootan of Midland; two nephews, Trevor Lee Stockton of Tucson, Ariz., and Justin Cord Cleveland of Houston; a niece, Alicia Trey Branch of Houston; and numerous cousins.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 9, 2002, at Hubbard-Kelly Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Jimmy Braswell officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens under the direction of Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
The family will meet with friends from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. today, May 8, 2002, at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

Sheila F. Allison
ODESSA — Sheila F. Allison, 44, of Odessa, passed away Sunday, May 5, 2002, at Medical Center Hospital. She was born Nov. 11, 1957, to John and Ruth Lasseigne in Marshall.
She married
Gary Allison on Dec. 24, 1975. He preceded her in death Jan. 17, 2002.
Graveside services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday, May 9, 2002, at Sunset Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Jess Little of Sunset Heights Baptist Church officiating.
Sheila had worked for Medical Center Hospital for three years and was formerly employed by McCoy’s for 13 years. She enjoyed collecting Indian artifacts.
She is survived by a son, David Allison of Odessa; a daughter, Sabrina Allison of Abilene; her parents, John and Ruth Lasseigne of Odessa; a brother, Joseph Lasseigne of Odessa; her sisters, Sandra Hooks of Altus, Okla., and Cynthia Alford of Odessa; and her two grandchildren, Dustin Taylor Allison and Jeremy Blake Rogers.

Betty 'Joyce' Bates
LONGVIEW — Betty Joyce Bates, age 69, of White Oak was laid in the arms of Jesus on Monday, May 6, 2002, after a hard-fought battle with lung cancer.
Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 9, 2002, at Lakeview Funeral Home with Don Wayt reading the eulogy and the Rev. Ronnie Star officiating.
Joyce was born of Earnest and Annadell Baker on March 12, 1933, in Woodson. She is formerly of Odessa.
Joyce is survived by her husband of 51 years, Melvin “Jack” Bates Sr. of White Oak; sister, Billie Arnold of Gatesville; brother, Eddie Baker; sister-in-law, Jackie Baker of Odessa; five children and their spouses, Edward and Debbie Bates of White Oak, Melvin Jr. and Dee Ann Bates of Ben Wheeler, Albert and Sabrina Bates of Gladewater, Brenda and Allan Bradshaw of Longview and Wayne Sr. and Patricia Bates of Sherman; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. today, May 8, 2002, at Lakeview Funeral Home.

Robert F. Willis Sr.
MIDLAND — Beloved husband, father, grandfather, son, brother and dear friend, Robert F. Willis Sr. was called home to heaven Tuesday, May 7, 2002, at his Midland residence.
Robert was born March 14, 1958, in Pasadena, Calif., to Frank and Shirley Willis. He moved to Roswell, N.M., in 1971. He graduated from Eastern New Mexico University in 1982, moved to Midland and went to work for Unocal as a drilling foreman. He was employed with Unocal for 18 years. He then started his own drilling consultant corporation in 2000.
Robert met the love of his life in 1996 and later married
Sept. 16, 2000. He had so many hobbies: Projects, summer trips to Lake Possum Kingdom, hunting, scuba diving, snow skiing, golfing, reading and spending time with his family. Most of all, he loved being involved in his daughter Kristen’s activities. He was one of a kind.
Robert was cherished and truly loved by all. He was a wise, loyal, compassionate and hardworking man who touched the lives of everyone he came across. He was an inspiration to all that came to know him, especially during the past nine months while fighting cancer. Throughout his endeavor, he came to be closer with his family and the Lord. He touched so many lives with his faith not only in Midland, but at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston as well. He will be deeply missed by all.
He was preceded in death by his father, Frank Willis.
He leaves to cherish his love and memory his wife, Rachelle Builta-Willis; children, Kristen Willis, C.J. Willis and Robert Willis Jr. and wife Amy; his only grandchild, Kelly Willis, all of Midland; his mother, Shirley Willis of Pasadena, Calif.; stepmother, Sandra Willis of Capitan, N.M.; sister, Kathy Yoxall of Mesquite, N.M.; and stepbrother, James Ross of Gallup, N.M.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today, May 8, 2002, at Ellis Funeral Home.

Opal Fern Hendrickson Brown
ODESSA — Opal Fern Hendrickson Brown, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, passed away Monday, May 6, 2002, in Odessa, where she had made her home for the past 24 years with her daughter Shirley Martin.
She was born Jan. 19, 1913, in Granby, Mo., to Melvin Wesley Hendrickson and Agnes May Cochram Hendrickson. She attended school in Granby and was very proud of being on the girls basketball team. Her grandfather, with whom she lived during her early years, was a Baptist minister in Granby.
She married
James Edward Brown on March 26, 1934, in Seminole, Okla. She and her husband moved their family to Hobbs, N.M., in 1943 where she was very active in the First Baptist Church. She taught junior girls Sunday school classes for many years and was a leader in the WMU and Training Union at the church. She was a devoted mother who loved being involved in family activities and participated in school functions such as PTA and sponsoring her son’s sports. She also loved to sew for her family. She was especially proud of the grandchildren and enjoyed being a member of the Grandmother’s Club in Hobbs.
Her husband of 33 years, parents and a brother preceded her in death.
Survivors: Daughters and son, Cleta Brown Jackson of University Place, Wash., Shirley Brown Proffitt Martin and husband Tommie of Odessa and Ed Brown and wife Mary Anne of Mission Viejo, Calif.; grandchildren, Stephen Jackson and wife Marita of Kirkland, Wash., Suzanne Jackson and daughter Kristina of University Place, Wash., Gregory Jackson of Boston, Mass., Paula Stevens and husband Mike and children Chelsea, Callie and Chance of Odessa, Jeffrey Proffitt and wife Lisa and children Courtney and Stephanie of Odessa, Todd Brown of Mission Viejo, Calif., and Melissa Brown Galindo and husband Steve of Laguna Niguel, Calif.; grandchildren by marriage, Tommy Martin and wife Andrea and children Mallori and Taylor of Odessa, Kimberly Chancellor and husband Carl and children Shelby and Trent of Odessa and Renee Taylor and husband Danny and children Kirstin and Dru of Odessa; brothers and sisters, Wesley Edward Hendrickson and wife Rita (deceased), Melva Athalea Pace of Buda, Opal Goben of San Antonio and Wendell Hendrickson and wife Leta of Fort Worth; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff in the emergency room and on the fifth and sixth floors of Medical Center Hospital for their kindness and care shown to Mrs. Brown. We would also like to thank the staff at Deerings Nursing Home for its dedicated compassionate care.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. CDT Friday, May 10, 2002, in the chapel of Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors. Interment will be at 2 p.m. MDT Friday at Prairie Haven cemetery in Hobbs, N.M.

Michael Dean Mohesky
ODESSA — Michael Dean Mohesky, age 53, of Odessa passed away, Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002, in Odessa.
He was born November 25, 1948 in Wichita, Kansas. He married
Randy Worden on June 23, 1990 in Odessa. He was a rig mechanic for National Oilwell. Prior to his current employer, Mike was an over the road truck driver for the past 20 years and had recently enjoyed the “ride” of his Harley.
He had been in the Army and the Navy. He was a Catholic.
Survivors include the wife, Randy Worden Mohesky of Odessa, 2 sons, Greg Mohesky and wife, Shanda of San Angelo, Lance Mohesky of Odessa, daughter, Melissa Mohesky of Odessa and step daughter, Stephanie Worden of Odessa, mother in law, Cora Mae “Boots” Adams of Ruidoso, NM, brother, Brad Mohesky of Odessa, 2 sisters, Toni Conklin and son, Michael of Odessa, Stacy Armstrong and husband, Ken of Odessa, several nieces and nephews, and 2 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Tony and Betty Mohesky and his brother Dennis Mohesky.
Family visitation will be Sunday, August 18, 2002, from 3 p.m.–5 p.m. at Hubbard-kelly Funeral Home.

Stephanie L. Munden
MIDLAND — Stephanie L. Munden passed away Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002, after a 2-1/2 year battle with cancer.
Stephanie was born Aug. 24, 1951 in Guymon, Okla. and had been a resident of Midland since 1977.
She was preceded in death by her father, Homer Nichols; and her father-in-law, Howard Munden.
Stephanie is survived by her husband, Steve Munden; her son, Jeff Munden and his wife Leisha and granddaughter, Brynn Danielle Munden, all of Midland; her mother, LaMoyne Nichols of Odessa; mother-in-law, Rose Munden of Midland.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of Midland Memorial Hospital and the Allison Cancer Center for the wonderful care that was given to Stephanie.
