Jack Weldon Brown
KERMIT — Jack Weldon Brown of Greenwood Village, Colo., died Saturday, Sept. 28, 2002, at the Hospice of Boulder County Care Center in Louisville, Colo., of lung cancer. He was 81.
He was born Oct. 10, 1920, the youngest of three children, to Arthur Hutchinson Brown and Mary Roberta Reese in Rotan, Texas, in the midst of a West Texas oil boom.
Mr. Brown served in the Army Corps of Engineers in World War II where his contributions include building airfields on the Aleutian Islands and building the Alcan Highway connecting Alaska and the United States. He obtained the rank of First Lieutenant.
Mr. Brown graduated from Texas A&M University in College Station with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Mr. Brown was a lifelong Aggie enthusiast.
On Dec. 16, 1945, he married Marggie Lee McDougal in Wink, Texas. They were married 51 years until her death in 1997.
Mr. Brown’s engineering and leadership abilities were highly regarded and led to a number of challenging assignments for Amoco Production Company in Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Colorado spanning 36 years. He was the Operations Manager for Amoco’s Denver Region from 1976 until his retirement in 1984.
Mr. Brown will be remembered as a fine, Christian gentleman who was dedicated to his country; a faithful, devoted husband; a loving father and grandfather; a successful engineer; an inspiring leader; a handyman extraordinaire; and an avid sportsman. Mr. Brown had a mischievous glint in his eye and a wonderful, wry wit. He was a man of his word. Finally, he will be remembered for his tough stand against cancer throughout which he remained gracious, dignified, and uncomplaining.
Mr. Brown was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and his sister, Eleanor Weathermon. He is survived by his brother, Charles Brown and his wife Mary Lou of Fort Worth, Texas; his four children, Jack Brown Jr. of Superior, Colo., David Brown of Highlands Ranch, Colo., Richard Brown of Orlando, Fla., and Sandra Sartor and her husband Joe of Longmont, Colo.; his three grandchildren, Lyndsay Lancaster, Samuel Sartor, and Lillian Sartor; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5 at The First Baptist Church in Wink, Texas, with burial following at Kermit cemetery. The services will be officiated by Larry Landusky and Boyd Fallwell. Pallbearers will be Jack Brown Jr., David Brown, Richard Brown, Joe Sartor, Vince VanZago, Chris Rushing, Dean Rushing, and Lance Landusky. Arrangements are entrusted to Family Services Funeral Parlor.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Texas A&M Foundation, Mechanical Engineering Scholarship Fund, 401 George Bush Drive, College Station, TX 77840, in the name of Jack W. Brown.

Glen P. Cain
MIDLAND — Glen P. Cain passed away on Oct. 1, 2002, at Midland Memorial Hospital.
He was born July 11, 1923, in Wilmer, Texas. He spent his working years in the oil fields of Venezuela with Mobile Oil, West Texas, New Mexico and Mississippi with Texaco, and retired in 1982. Glen was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend to many. His hobbies were archeology, genealogy and he loved the Cowboy Symposium in Ruidoso, cowboy poetry, preachers, country and gospel music and his family and children. Glen’s faith and love of the Lord was a very sacred and private part of his life and he loved the mountains of New Mexico.
Glen was a member of Texaco Retirees Club, attended Midland Senior Center, Odessa Senior Center, Ruidoso Downs Senior Center and Golden Agers of Ruidoso. He was a member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church and a lifelong Methodist. Earlier in life, Glen sang in the church choir, was a leader of a youth group and taught youth Sunday school class. In Venezuela he was leader of the Protestant Worship service in our camp and secretly distributed Gideon Bibles and worked with the Missionaries from California. Glen was a fun person, loved life and lived it to the fullest and will be missed by those who loved him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edger and Alma Cain; and son-in-law, Scott Curry.
Glen is survived by his wife of 52 years, Lelia Cain; daughters, Rita Curry and Glenna Haskell and husband Steve, all of Midland; granddaughter, Michelle Ream and husband John of Midland; grandson, Vince Curry, Brian, David Haskell and John Haskel and wife Becky, all of Midland; sister, Lois Apperson and husband Jack of Dallas; seven great-grandchildren, Brandi Reeves, Whitney Curry, Courtney Curry, Amber Ream, Colton Ream, Stormi Ream and Anthony Haskell, all of Midland; a niece, Kathy Laughlin; and nephew, John Apperson of Dallas; and numerous cousins of Dallas.
A visitation will be held Thursday, Oct. 3, 2002, at Ellis Funeral Home between the hours of 6 and 8 p.m.
Funeral services have been scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4, 2002, at Ellis Funeral Home Chapel. Arrangements are under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Don Minshew, Joe Banks, Johnny Gee, Bob Bonner, Ed Clampitt and Johnny Apperson.

John Renice McGarrity
ODESSA — John Renice McGarrity, 67, of Odessa passed away Monday, Sept. 30, 2002, at Medical Center Hospital. He was born April 16, 1935, in Brownwood.
Mr. McGarrity has lived in Odessa since 1958. He was a retired barber. He was a member of the Elks and Eagles Lodges. He received a Scoutmaster Award and helped build a log cabin in Boy Scouts. He was a longtime member of University Church of Christ. His passion was his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, James Lee McGarrity; two brothers; and two sisters.
He is survived by his sons, John R. McGarrity III of Hollywood, Calif., and Jesse M. McGarrity of Childress; daughters, Judy Elaine Hoffman of Midland and Janna Dixon of Odessa; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4, 2002, at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

Sylvia J. Houston
ODESSA — Sylvia J. Houston, our beloved mother, mother-in-law, grandma and granny, slipped into the arms of Jesus and walked the streets of gold with her sweetheart Monday, May 20, 2002, at Hospice House after a sudden illness.
She was born Feb. 15, 1923, in Garland to William R. and Pauline Brown. She graduated from high school in Jal, N.M., and attended Business College in Lubbock. While in Lubbock, she married Kendall Chandler Houston on Dec. 1, 1941. Their love and lives were an inspiration to us all. He preceded her in death Oct. 6, 1997, and had waited for her to join him in heaven. This she did and was evident when she left this world by the beautiful smile and glow that came on her face.
Mom was a member of Sherwood Baptist Church, Eastern Star and local Poetry Society. She has a published book of poetry titled “A New Day” and has written and published several songs.
Sylvia is survived by her daughter, Susan Langley and husband Ronny of Odessa; her son, Kendall C. Houston Jr. and wife Lynn of Karnes City; three grandsons, Dennis Houston and wife Monica of Odessa, Chandler Langley and wife Rebecca of Watauga and Mike Houston and wife Melanie of Houston; a granddaughter, Heather Morgan and her only great-grandson, Aaron Morgan, who was the apple of her eye; a sister, Beatrice Martin of Ben Wheeler; and a brother, Von Rae Brown of Yucca Valley, Calif. She also had several nieces and nephews as well as many friends. She adored her entire family and the feeling was certainly mutual.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 23, 2002, at Sherwood Baptist Church with Brother Tom Hiser officiating followed by graveside at 2 p.m. MST at Lovington cemetery in Lovington, N.M. The family will receive guests from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
The family would like to thank Darla Walden, registered nurse, and Dick Brown at Home Hospice as well as the entire staff of Hospice House. You truly do “love people until God sees fit to call them home.” May God richly bless each of you.

Billy Williams
ODESSA — Billy Mack Williams, 76, of Odessa passed away Monday, May 20, 2002, at Medical Center Hospital. He was born Jan. 2, 1926, to Zeb T. and Cordie Williams in Bogota.
Billy was stationed in Pearl Harbor in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He married Josephine on June 23, 1958, in Lovington, N.M. They moved to Odessa in 1955 from Denton. He earned his bachelor’s degree from North Texas State. He worked for Precision Pump for 12 years before retiring in 1992.
He enjoyed fishing and camping. He loved to play with his Chihuahua, Harley. He was Methodist and a member of IOOF Lodge.
Both parents; his wife; a half brother, Johnny Williams; two sisters, Ethelleen Williams and Marie Blevins; half sister, Audie Young; and his son-in-law, Stan McCutcheon preceded him in death.
He is survived by his son, Bill M. Williams Jr. of Venus; daughters, Patricia McCutcheon, Sheila Williams and fiance Jason Jackson and Deloris Williams, all of Odessa; and two grandchildren, Carole McCutcheon and Shawn McCutcheon.
Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, May 24, 2002, at Sunset Memorial Chapel with the Revs. John Van Hoose and Clark Racca officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. A family visitation is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday.
The family has requested memorials directed to the American Cancer Society.
Services are under the direction of Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.

Marlin ‘Edge’ Edgington
YANCEY — Marlin “Edge” Edgington, 62, a retired truck driver, met the Angels on Sept. 12, 2002, after battling cancer.
He was born Aug. 1, 1940, in Manhattan, Kansas. He was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans, having lost his right leg above the knee in 1961.
The wonderful thing about Edge was that he never considered himself handicapped. Among his accomplishments, he drove over one million miles in his 1984 two-toned green Peterbilt with no loss of cargo or an accident. His handle was “DOUBLE EDGE.” He also danced, swam, rode horses and drove his tractor on his ranch.
He is survived by his wife, Pearlann “Pae” Edgington; brother, John Edgington of Champaign, Ill.; sisters, Sharon Diffenderfer of Anthony, N.M., and Vanessa Williams of Fenton, Mich.; his parents, Owen and Dorothy Edgington of Flat Rock, Ill.; and two sons, Leslie Robert Edgington of Leakey, Texas, and Sean Bingham of Olathe, Colo.; three daughters, Lynn Bingham of Camp Wood, Bonita Arriola of Falfurrias and Julie Domgard of Odessa; grandchildren, Shane Bingham, Daniel Bingham, Tanya Bingham, Jonathon Edgington, Dalene Edgington, Jenny Chavez, Valerie Chavez, Maria Arriola, Cristina Arriola, Dakota Bingham, Taylor Bingham and one great-grandson, Gentry Bingham.
He will be missed by his constant companion “BONEY.”
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. at the ranch in Yancey for friends and family, Sept. 28, 2002.

Manuel Alfredo Herrera Sr.
ODESSA — Manuel Alfredo Herrera Sr., 53, of Odessa, died Thursday, Sept. 19, 2002, in Muleshoe, Texas.
Mr. Herrera was born Jan. 12, 1949, in Mulato, Chihuahua, Mexico.
SURVIVORS: Wife, Maria Herrera of Odessa; stepmother, Ernestina Herrera of Mulato, Chihuahua, Mexico; six daughters, Sally Morales and husband Tony, Nancy Pinon and husband Marin, Norma Chavez and husband Ramon, Bertha Gomez, Adriana Marie Herrera and Christina Daniella Herrera, all of Odessa; four sons, Jacinto Herrera and wife Christina, Manuel Herrera Jr. and wife Vicky, Alfredo Herrera and wife Hijinia and Marcus Herrera, all of Odessa; one brother, Tony Herrera of Oklahoma; seven sisters, Martha Herrera, Rita Olivas, Chayo Mendias, Lorerra Garcia and Judith Herrera, all of Odessa, Elsa Herrera of Ojinaga and Veronica Infante of Andrews; and fifteen grandchildren.
Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Monday at Martinez Funeral Home. Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Father Cerafin Avenido officiating. Burial will follow at Rosehill cemetery.
Services under the direction of Martinez Funeral Home.

Shirley M. Sandefer
ODESSA — Shirley M. Sandefer, 62, of Odessa, went to be with her Lord and savior in the early morning hours of Sept. 21, 2002.
She was born to Walter and Elsie Flynn in Segiun, Texas, on March 2, 1940. She later married Paul Sandefer in Odessa on Sept. 16, 1991.
She was a homemaker and a Baptist.
She is survived by her husband Paul; two sons, Jimmy West and wife Mary of Odessa and James Paul Sandefer and wife Becky of Luling, Texas; one brother, Sonny Flynn of Austin; two sisters, Jeannette Stewbing of Seguin and Betty Sue Meckel of New Braunfels, Texas; five grandchildren, Amy and James West of Odessa and Bobby, Monica and Jennifer Janosick of Odessa.
Graveside services will be at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 23, 2002, at Sunset Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Jimmy Braswell officiating.
Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

Frank L. Tomlin
WEATHERFORD — Frank L. Tomlin, 78, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2002, in Weatherford.
Graveside services will be at 3:30 p.m. today at Greenwood Memorial Park.
He was born March 9, 1924, in Fort Worth.
Survivors are: brother, Jack Tomlin and wife Doris of Odessa; brother-in-law, Harold Strother of Everman; and many nieces and nephews.

J.T. Townsend
DENVER CITY — J.T. Townsend, 80, of Denver City died Thursday morning in Hobbs, N.M.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Bob Webb officiating. Burial will follow in the Denver City Memorial Park under the direction of Ratliff Funeral Home.
J.T. was born on June 13, 1922, in Hamlin, Texas. He married Mary Jo Cox on Oct. 3, 1942, in Noodle, Texas. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corp from Oct. 1942 to Nov. 1945 at Lubbock and Bryan-College Station in jet maintenance. They moved to Denver City in 1949 and he was employed by Shell Oil Co. He retired from Shell after 27 years. He then owned and operated J&J Stream Cleaning for 26 years. J.T. was a member of the Denver City Masonic Lodge and a deacon in the First Baptist Church.
J.T. was preceded in death by 2 daughters, Mary Jeannette and Shirley Jean Townsend; one brother, Donnell; and two sisters, Peggy Townsend and Mena Carnes.
Survivors are: his wife, Mary Jo; one son, Jimmy Don of Odessa; two brothers, Weldon Townsend of Orange and Cliff Townsend of Midland; one sister, Donnie Sisk of Odessa; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation.
