Jodie Pearl Poyner
ODESSA — On Aug. 27, 2002, Jodie Pearl Poyner went to be with her Jesus, to dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
Jodie was a dedicated and loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was a cherished sister and friend. She will truly be missed by all who knew her.
Jodie Pearl Poyner was born May 6, 1929, in Crafton, Texas. She lived in Odessa for the past 47 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Mary Pigg; brothers, J.C. “Son” Pigg and Troy Pigg; sisters, Ollie Margaret Thompson and Georgia Cunningham.
She is survived by her husband of 48 years, W.L. “Les” Poyner of Odessa; children, Darvin Poyner and wife Becky, Icy Kannel and husband David, Roy Poyner and Jim Poyner, all of Odessa, Tom Poyner and wife Dawn of Meridian and Walt Poyner and wife Tamara of Midland; sisters, Jewel O’Neal, Mary Walker, Vinia Meyers and Nelta Walker; grandchildren, Jason and Christina Poyner, Jody Bailey, Stuart Bailey, Nick and Melody Kannel, Taber White, Bailey Poyner, Gabrie Gallier, Taylor Gallier, and Trent Mitchell; great-grandchildren, Mireya and Savanna Kannel; and many, many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 31, 2002, at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Raul Puente officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Hospice House and Odyssey Health Care for their kindness and care.

Jack C. Hardin
ODESSA — Jack C. Hardin, 76, of Odessa passed away Thursday, June 20, 2002, at Medical Center Hospital. He was born Aug. 4, 1925, in Crawford, Okla.
Jack was a retired Odessa police officer. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was a member of Sherwood Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife Margie Miller Hardin.
He is survived by his son, Leslie Hardin and wife Barbara of Rockford, Ill.; two daughters, Jackie Leftwich and husband Steve of Odessa and Shirley Gawlick and husband Robert of Fort Worth; brother, Travis Hardin of Canadian; sister, Wanzell Davis of Elk City, Okla.; and five grandchildren, Luke and Angie Hardin of Rockford, Ill., Kim and Chuck Leftwich of Odessa and Brandon Gawlik of Beaumont.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, June 24, 2002, at Sherwood Baptist Church with the Rev. Tom Hiser officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens under the direction of Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

George Edward Jones
ODESSA — George Edward Jones, 86, of Odessa, passed away Tuesday, June 18, 2002, at Parks Methodist Retirement Village. He was born Aug. 2, 1915, in Greenville, Texas. His parents were Troy Paul and Anna Grace Fleeman Jones. He had two brother, Troy Paul and Howard Jones.
Edward graduated from Greenville High School. He then attended East Texas University in Commerce, where he received both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English.
During World War II, he was denied service because of flat feet. He then worked for Consolidated Vultee in Fort Worth on the B-36 bomber. After the war, he attended the University of Illinois in Champayne Urbana for further graduate work. From there he continued teaching at Louisiana Tech University for 15 years. During that time he took courses at Western Colorado State, Texas Tech and the University of Illinois.
Since being in Odessa, he taught at Odessa College for seven years. He was active in the First United Methodist Church. He enjoyed AARP work and was Assistant State Director for two years. He was a member of the Golden Kiwanas Club and a lover of classical music. One of the works he was most fond of was helping to establish the Parks Methodist Retirement Center in Odessa along with the Rev. Lacy Standifer.
He loved flowers and plants, especially irises and day lilies. He was a member of West Texas Iris Society and president from 1979 to 1980. His favorite pastime was reading.
He was preceded in death by his third son, Kent Dundas Jones.
He is survived by his loving wife, Margaret Waggener Jones of Odessa; sons, David E. Jones of Denver, Colo. And Carl Phillip Jones of Odessa and two grandchildren, Cody Carlton Jones and Chessa Nicole Jones.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, June 24, 2002, at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Steve Trout officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

Oleata Pearl Butler Lasiter
PLEASANTON — Oleata Pearl Butler Lasiter was born on May 10, 1918, in Liberty, Texas, to Louis Nap and Mittie Butler. She married the love her life of 55 years, Howard C. Lasiter, on Nov. 19, 1939. Howard preceded her in death Sept. 11, 1994. The Lord called her home June 22, 2002.
Oleata was a resident of Grandfalls, Texas, for 25 years and Pleasanton, Texas for 35 years. She served as Pleasanton City Secretary from 1974 to 1980. Oleata was very active at the First Baptist Church in Pleasanton. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Grandfalls, Texas, and Pleasanton, Texas, for over 50 years.
Oleata was a very sweet and gentle person who loved her family and pets. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by two daughters, Judy Burton of Monahans and Cindy Mercer and husband Lloyd Jr. of Pleasanton, Texas; a sister, Birdie Casey of Goliad, Texas; seven grandchildren, Patrick Burton of Austin, Texas, Michael and Diana Burton of Llano, Texas, Shannon and Lynn Burton of Dallas, Texas, Patrick Jr. and Christina Hurley of Pleasanton, Texas, Chris and Katrin Mercer of Pearland, Texas, Melanie and Paul Llamas of San Antonio, Texas and Courtnie Mercer of Abilene, Texas; 14 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Oleata was preceded in death by her husband Howard C. Lasiter, her parents, Louis Nap and Mittie Bulter, and a son-in-law, John A. Burton.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church in Pleasanton with the Rev. Bill Fowler officiating. Burial will follow at Three Rivers City cemetery.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the First Baptist Church of Pleasanton, Texas.

Harvie Cyril “Mac” McCulloch
ODESSA — Private final rites and inurnment services for Harvie Cyril “Mac” McCulloch were held June 22, 2002, at St. Barnabas’ Episcopal Church with the Rev. Laura Deaderick officiating.
Mac was born March 28, 1921, in Sulphur Springs to Harvey Mac McCulloch and Maxie Hooker. One of five children, Mac attended school in Doole and worked on the family farm to support the family through the Great Depression. He left McCulloch County to serve his country during World War II. From 1941 to 1945, Mac served with distinction in the 56th Naval Construction Battalion in the Pacific Theater, in Hawaii and on the island of Guam. One of the proudest accomplishments of Mac’s life, other than his family, was the everlasting friendships Mac maintained with his fellow SeaBees. Until his death, Mac and his family attended annual and semi-annual Sea-Bee reunions throughout the U.S.
After the war, Mac met and married Peggy Jean Weilmuenster on Oct. 18, 1952, and they settled in Odessa. To everyone who knew Mac, he was the quintessential entrepreneur. Through the years, Mac was engaged in the air conditioning manufacturing business, auto, truck and equipment sales, commercial and residential construction, farming, ranching, banking, real estate and oil and gas businesses.
Mac was also a member of the El Maida Shrine of El Paso, H.A. McFarland Lodge No. 1338 and was a 32nd degree Mason, the Odessa Scottish Rite Association, Sheriff’s Association of Texas, the Odessa Chuck Wagon Gang, the Odessa Chamber of Commerce, the Honorable Order of the Kentucky Colonels, a life member of the American Legion Post No. 430, a life member of the VFW Post No. 4372 and a Golden Member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles.
Mac would most like to be remembered as a defender and supporter of those less fortunate, for whom he selflessly contributed his time, resources and moral support. His favorite charities were the Masonic Home, Shriners Children’s Hospital and Cal Farley’s Boy’s Ranch. Mac never knew a stranger. He was warm, friendly, extremely interesting and always ready to help anyone who was willing to help himself.
Mac and Peggy had two children, Michael Jay McCulloch, a doctor of veterinary medicine who lives in Odessa with his wife, Kathleen; and Betty McCulloch Manning, a dental hygienist, who lives in The Woodlands with her husband, Kendall. Peggy, Michael and Betty were the light of Mac’s life. Mac was predeceased by his parents and two brothers. He is survived by his wife, children and two brothers.

Sherry Bedford
ABILENE — Sherry Bedford, 50, a resident of Clyde, formerly of Big Spring, died Sunday, August 18, 2002, at a Medical Center in Abilene.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Wylie Baptist Church, 6097 Buffalo Gap Road, in Abilene. Her body will be cremated. Arrangements are being made by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory.
She was born on Nov. 2, 1951, in Big Spring, and received an A.A.S. degree from Odessa College, and moved to Clyde from Big Spring. She was a caretaker for Chartwell Community Services and a Baptist.
Survivors include her husband, Grady Joe Groves of Clyde; her father and stepmother, Raymond E. and Helen Bedford of Midland; her mother, Dorris McNew of Oklahoma; brothers, Raymond Glenn Bedford and Donald A. Bedford of Odessa, James Lee Bedford of Locbuie, Colorado, and William Bedford of Midland; and grandparents, O. B. and Bertha Montgomery of Abilene.
Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 41, Abilene, TX 79604.

Frances Gonzales
ODESSA — Frances Gonzales, 65, passed away Saturday, August 17, 2002, at her residence.
She was born May 11, 1937, to Pedro and Dominga Neria in Pyote. Her parents, and one son, Daniel Gonzales, Jr., all preceded her in death.
Frances married Daniel Gonzales on May 21, 1954, in Odessa. Her family was most important in her life. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.
Services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday, August 20, 2002, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with Father Rodriquez officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Robert Alarcon, Arturo Munoz III, Armando Pulido, Juan Gonzales, Ruben Gonzales, Jr. and Joe Edward Gonzales.
Rosary was scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday, August 19, 2002, at Sunset Memorial Chapel.
Survivors include her husband, Daniel H. Gonzales of Odessa; sons, Juan M. Gonzales of Austin, Ruben M. Gonzales, Edward Gonzales and David N. Gonzales, all of Odessa; daughters, Celia Munoz, Rebecca Cobarrubio and Rosa E. Navarette, all of Odessa; brothers, Arnulfo Neria, Robert Neria, and Jesse Neria, all of El Paso, and Richard Neria of Odessa; sisters, Carmen Flores of Odessa, and Amelia Franco of Kermit; 18 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.
Services are under the direction of Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.

Jerry Lee Neitzel
ODESSA — Jerry Lee Neitzel 64, of Odessa, a retired truck driver, died Saturday, Aug. 17, 2002, at Medical Center Hospital. He was born July 13, 1938, in Grants Pass, OR.
Funeral Services will be at 2 p.m. today at the Frank W. Wilson Chapel with Melvin Warren officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
He was a member of H.O.G. (Harley Owners Group), the Antique Trucking Association, and a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Irene Neitzel; and brother-in-law, Hank Schumann.
He is survived by his wife, Margie Neitzel of Odessa; son, Mark Neitzel, wife, Terry and grandson, Ryan of Aztec, N.M.; daughter, Glenda “Wendy” Burrow, husband, David and grandson Nathan of Garland; brother, Carl “Wink” Neitzel and wife Marna of Mesa AZ; sister, Evelyn “Jackie” Schumann of Farmington N.M.
Arrangements entrusted to Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors.

Darlyene ‘Polly’ Roberson
ODESSA — Darlyene “Polly” Roberson, age 79, of Odessa, went to be with her Lord on Aug. 17, 2002, at Hospice House in Odessa.
Services are scheduled for 10 a.m. today at the First Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Darlyene was born May 19, 1923, in Paris, Tenn., to Edmond B. and Emma McCuiston. She grew up in Eastland, Texas. She married William K. Roberson on Sept. 5, 1941, in Paris, Tenn. After William returned from the service, they moved to Odessa in 1947.
She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church and taught Sunday School there for many years. She worked as an L.V.N. at Medical Center Hospital before retiring. Later, she worked several years for Dr. Glen Williams. She enjoyed sewing and doll making. She loved being with her family especially her grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband, William of Odessa; daughters, Judy Heslep of Odessa and Claudia Roberson of Odessa; a son, Bill Roberson and his wife Liz of Odessa grandchildren, Angie Crow and husband Steve of Pagosa Springs, Colo., Katherine Nelson and husband Shawn of Canyon Lake and Chris Roberson and wife Summer of Round Rock; four great-grandchildren, Kelly, Casey and Kevin Crow and Will Nelson; brothers, E.B. McCuiston and wife Jeri of Farmington, N.M., Jim McCuiston and wife Barbara of Grandbury; and several nieces and nephews.
Her parents and a sister, Rita Willoughby, preceded her in death.
Services are under the direction of Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

Elmer Eugene Barrett
ODESSA — Elmer Eugene Barrett, 88, of Odessa, a salesman, passed away Sunday, Aug. 18, 2002, at Medical Center Hospital.
He was born July 24, 1914, in Harrisburg, Ill., to Audie A. Barrett and Florence Ramsey Barrett.
He was employed at Carps Department Store in Harrisburg, Ill., prior to his transfer to Rolla, Mo., in 1942, as manager of Carps Department Store. The family moved to Odessa in 1953. Mr. Barrett was employed in both wholesale and retail sales.
Mr. Barrett was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Beulah in 2000 and Flossie in 1918; wife of sixty years, Lucille Hunsinger in 1999; and one twin son Jean “K” in 1992.
He is survived by his daughter, Janet Sue Tisdale and husband L. Dwain of Odessa; son, John “H” Barett and wife Eleanor of Odessa; four grandchildren, William Tisdale and wife Jamie of Odessa, Cori Dea Thane and husband Gerald of Midland; Penelope Barrett of Houston and September Tull and husband Larry of Odessa; and nine great-grandchildren.
A private service will be held at a later date.
Memorials, if desired, may be made to the American Red Cross-National Disaster Fund.
