Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2002, at McNett Funeral Home, 705 N. Main Street, Andrews, Texas.
Dorothy lost a yearlong, hard battle with cancer and left this life on Aug. 24, 2002.
Born May 14, 1932, in Shamrock, Texas, to parents Dorothy and Kenneth Richard Daffron, she attended schools in Fort Worth before moving to Odessa during the mid 1940s. In Odessa, she attended Odessa High School, graduating in 1950, and then attended Odessa College where she met Robert W. “Bob” Ervin. They were married
June 30, 1951.
Early in their marriage, they had three children. Bob was in the Marines but as soon as his tour of duty was over, the young family settled in West Texas. They owned and operated Herd and Ervin Trucking in Odessa. During these busy years, Dottie and Bob were active members of Crescent Park Church of Christ. Dottie was busy with homemaking and took on extra responsibilities including being a Girl Scout leader, and a member of Beta Sigma Phi. She worked with the Republican Party, and volunteered with both the American Cancer Society and the Arthritis Foundation. She served on the board of American Cancer Society and eventually worked professionally for the Arthritis Foundation.
In 1963, the Ervin family followed the oilfield to Andrews, Texas where they owned and operated Andrews Service Company and Barnie’s Steam Service. In Andrews, Dottie worked at First National Bank and at the Andrews County Health Department. She stayed active in Beta Sigma Phi, and was a Cub Scout Leader. These were extremely busy and fun years for the Ervin family. All three kids were involved in sports and lots of extracurricular activities. Dottie stayed busy preparing for and attending each and every event as it came up.
As the climate of the oilfield changed, Bob and Dottie decided to make a transition. Bob sold his businesses but continued to work in the oilfield service industry. The two moved several times following his job. During these years, they lived in Crane, Pleasanton, Carrizo Springs, Laredo and San Antonio. Around 1986, the job lead west again and both were thrilled when Bob was transferred with Tesoro to a position in Midland. They relocated to Odessa and lived there together until his death September 21, 1991.
From 1991 until 1996, Dottie stayed busy with her three grown children and all the grandchildren. With a knack for flower décor, she thought that working with flowers would be fun. In 1993, she attended Texas A&M and received her certification as a Floral Designer. Dottie worked part time for fun but mainly used her talent to help family and friends with weddings and other fun times where she could “do the flowers”. She was a talented seamstress and wonderful artist. All the talents God gave, she used, developed, and taught to others. Her home and those of her children are filled with pieces of her art and handiwork.
In 1996, Dottie renewed a friendship with longtime family friend, John R. Parish. All three children and the grandchildren were elated when they married
on Nov. 1, 1996. After marrying John, she moved once again to Andrews. She was a member of the Octillo Garden Club and remained an active member at the Open Door Assembly of God Church in Odessa.
In the fall of 2001, it was discovered that she had a brain tumor and lung cancer. She endured two major brain surgeries, radiation and chemotherapy. Dottie fought bravely and set a great example of courage until the very end. Never complaining, she only wanted to spend as much time as she had left with her family and friends. To all those who visited and sent cards, food or flowers, the family would like to express sincere thanks. Special love and gratefulness are expressed for the wonderful care provided by Lettie Rondan and Maria Bejarano.
She is survived by her husband, John R. Parish; one daughter, Cathy Cavin and husband Elmo of Lubbock; two sons, William Robert “Bill” Ervin of Odessa and Andrew “Andy” Ervin and wife Darlyne of Andrews; one stepdaughter, Leah Wells and husband Chuck of Weslaco; one stepson, John T. Parish and wife Paula of Waco; two sisters, Susan Payne of Odessa and Nancy Johnson of Potosi; one brother, Rick Daffron of Clyde; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; three nephews; one niece; and special family friend, Tara Murrell.
Attending as pallbearers will be grandsons, Joe Weaver and Drew Ervin; nephews, Stephen Payne, Toby Payne and Joseph Johnson; and friend Chuck Collins.
Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society, 811 Central Drive, Odessa, TX, 79761 or Hospice House, 903 North Sam Houston, Odessa, TX, 79761.
