Edlin ‘Ed’ Bretting
SAN ANGELO — Edlin Karl Bretting, 86, of San Angelo, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002, at his residence following a courageous battle with melanoma. He was born Sep. 12, 1916, in the Freyburg community of Texas, to his parents, Max and Alma (Deterling) Bretting. He grew up on a farm helping his parents, and then went to the Klattenhoff Community, near Miles, to help relatives on their farm.
He attended a church service at Trinity Lutheran Church in San Angelo, where he met Velma Lippe. He was drafted into the Army in 1941 and spent time training in Australia and then in combat in New Guinea and Biak Island, during which time he corresponded with Velma. His last assignment was at a base near Little Rock, Ark. It was in Little Rock that he was married to Velma on March 10, 1945.
Ed was honorably discharged from the Army in September, 1945. He then was trained as an auto mechanic. After leaving Cleveland Motors in 1981, where he had worked for over 20 years, he worked part-time at Hooker Automotive and later at Weatherby Electric. Ed had volunteered at Citizen’s Recycling Center for the past seven years. In 2002, he was honored with membership in the Concho Valley Senior Hall of Fame for community service and inspirational leadership.
Ed had been an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church for many years, faithfully serving where needed, including helping as a money counter on Sunday mornings for the last 35 years. He was a member of the Elderberries group of the church and enjoyed trips and socializing with the group. His faith has been a very important part of his life, and the way he lived his life set an excellent example for his family and those around him. He was loving husband, father and grandfather and will be greatly missed.
Ed is survived by his wife, Velma (57) years; two daughters and their husbands, Gloria and Tim Sturm of Canton, Ohio, and Mary and Foy James McClelland of Odessa; on son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Rose Bretting of Centennial, Colo.; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Survivors also include his brother and wife, Leroy and Mildred Bretting of Houston; and 13 nieces and nephews. Family preceding him in death include his parents; sister, Viola Moran Eddleman; and two brothers, Wallace Bretting and Wilbert Bretting.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church with the Reverends Robert Budewig and Chester McCown officiating. Burial will follow at Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Friends will be received by Ed’s family from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at Johnson’s Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made in his name to Hospice of San Angelo, Inc., P.O. Box 471, San Angelo, TX 76902, or to a charity of your choice.

Jesse O’Rear
JAL, N.M. — Jesse O’Rear, 77, a 39-year resident of Jal, N.M., died Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002, at Odessa Regional Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. mountain time Saturday at the Church of Christ in Jal. Burial will follow at the Jal cemetery.
He married Loraine Boren May 10, 1947, in Kerr County. He was a Navy veteran and a member of the Church of Christ. Mr. O’Rear was retired from El Paso Natural Gas where he worked as a turbine mechanic.
He was preceded in death by one grandson, Jay Haire. Survivors include his wife, Loraine O’Rear of Jal, N.M.; Sons, Jimmy O’Rear and wife Linda of Jal, N.M., and Tim O’Rear and wife Sandra of Albuquerque, N.M.; daughter Lou Anna Haire and husband James of Ozona; mother, Luc Ola O’Rear of DeQueen, Ark.; brother, J.C. O’Rear of DeQueen, Ark.; sisters, Eunice Gortemiller of Hackett, Ark., Bernice McGlathery of McKinnleyville, Calif., and Ruby Wilson of Arcata, Calif.; grandchildren, Jared O’Rear, Holly Richins, Cassy Richins, Shasta Richins, Cody Richins, Cameron Cox, Kylie Cox, Misty Cox and Michael O’Rear; and great-granddaughter, Kelsie Haire.
Services entrusted to Cooper Funeral Chapel in Kermit.

Jim F. Frost
ODESSA — Jim Frank Frost, 94, long time resident and businessman in Monahans and Odessa, died on Thursday, Nov. 14, 2002. Jim and his wife, Anice, were founders and owners of Frost Bakery and faithful members of First Baptist Church in Monahans and then First Baptist Church in Odessa.
Frost was born February 12, 1908, in Merkel, Texas, the son of John and Ida Petty Frost, who made Robertson County his childhood home. Having made a personal commitment to Christ while plowing in a peanut field at eight years of age, he became a member of the Henry Prairie Baptist Church.
At 19 years old, he moved to Pecos to begin work at Pecos City Bakery where he met his future bride, Anice Buchanan. Married on October 3, 1936, they soon moved to Monahans, to begin Frost Baking Company.
Through God’s blessing, the business prospered, and in 1955 it was moved to a new modern baking facility in Odessa and renamed Frost Bakery Inc. Bread was distributed throughout the West Texas area. Many remember their school tours at Frost Bakery and the smells and delicious tastes of fresh hot bread. Frost served as president and manager until 1974 at which time the bakery was sold to Furrs Inc., and his son, Jack, continued the operation as president and manager.
In Monahans, Frost served as deacon in First Baptist Church, Chairman of the Board of Directors of First National Bank, Monahans Lions Club, and Board of Directors of Paisano Baptist Encampment in Alpine.
In Odessa, he served First Baptist Church as deacon as well as member of several church committees. He was the oldest living deacon there. He also has been a longtime member of Odessa Downtown Lions Club.
Jim and Anice leave to their children and the many who knew them a heritage of spiritual values and sincere kindness. They are survived by Jack and Colene Frost of Odessa, Bert and Tana Frost of Odessa, and Jim and Emily Frost of Bolivar, Missouri, as well as by eight grandchildren, and by 16 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15, at Frank Wilson Funeral Directors, 4635 Oakwood Drive in Odessa. Funeral will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16, at the Worship Center of First Baptist Church, Odessa. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Memorial Gifts may be made to Paisano Baptist Encampment, Box 973, Alpine, TX, 79831 or to a charity of your choice.

Leveta Scott
ODESSA — Leveta Scott, 73, of De Leon, a homemaker, died Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2002, at her residence.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Sunset Memorial Gardens Chapel. Burial will follow. Arrangements by Nowlin Funeral Home of De Leon.
She was born in Moran. She was a member of the De Leon Church of Christ.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Tycus and Katie Teel Boyd; brothers, Jewel Boyd and Raymond Boyd; sisters, Beulah Watson and Bertha Wallum; and grandson, Jeff Dowlen.
Survivors include her husband, John Scott of De Leon; son, Terry Scott of Odessa; daughter, Sheila Dowlen of Odessa; brothers, Ottus Boyd of Snyder and Theo Boyd of Rising Star; sister, Norma Wallum of Odessa; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Veva Virginia ‘Virgie’ Stava
ODESSA — Veva Virginia “Virgie” Stava, 93, of Odessa passed away Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002, at Medical Center Hospital. She was born Sept. 4, 1909, in Plainview, Neb. She married Stanley Joseph Stava Jan. 28, 1942, in Omaha, Neb. He preceded her in death Oct. 1, 1965.
Mrs. Stava moved to Odessa in 1958 from Houston. She was a homemaker and a member of Immanuel Baptist Church.
She is survived by her son, Gerald Stava and wife Karen of Monahans; daughter, Glenda Kozicki and husband Julian of Mableton, Ga.; four grandchildren, Emily and Alex Kozicki and David and Rachel Stava; and two great-grandchildren, Ethan and Sabrina.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002, at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bill Cook officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

Louis Odell Bird, Sr.
ODESSA — Louis Odell “L.O.” Bird, Sr. passed away Monday at his home after a valiant struggle against the cancer that took his life. He will be missed by his loving wife of 27 years, Alma Koonce Bird, his children, stepchildren, grandchildren, his sisters Lou Carter and Vermelle Sessions, and his nieces and nephews.
L.O. was born Nov. 5, 1928, to parents Arthur Bird and Elzada Deere Bird. In his youth, he was a robust, athletic young man who briefly pursued a career in professional baseball. After a broken leg, he went to work in the oilfield industry. His career spanned 50 years, retiring in 1990 as Superintendent from El Paso Products Company. After retirement, L.O. was a dedicated volunteer for Meals on Wheels. During his lifetime, he also served as Commissioner of the “Little League” Youth Baseball League and Chairman of the Republican Party of Ector County. His dedication to his work and his family was an inspiration to many.
His first marriage, to Elnora Webster, took place in Snyder in 1951 and ended in divorce in 1972. Together they had five children. He is survived by his son, Louis Bird, Jr.; his three daughters, Sherry Bird Cain, Kathleen Bird Adler, and Dana Bird, and eight grandchildren; Matthew Bird, Adam Bird, Chris Cain, Reese Bruechner, Jordan Diamond, Lea Diamond, Madeleine Adler, and Joshua Adler.
L.O. married Alma in Odessa in 1974. Together they have enjoyed family gatherings, community activities, and extensive travel. L.O. was the loving patriarch of a large family including Alma’s two sons, Ed Lewis and Ronnie Lewis, and three daughters, Lynn Lewis Hoskinson, Leigh Ann Lewis, and Lori Lewis, and six grandchildren, Jeremy Hoskinson, Jarrod Hoskinson, Dawn Johnson, Duskie Bennett, Robbie Lewis, and Dillon Kalinec, and great grandchild, Torie Johnson.
L.O. and Alma were ardent Republicans and participated in many Republican Party activities and functions. They were members of the St. John’s Episcopal Church where he served on the Vestry and the St. John’s School board. They would like to thank their pastor, Laura Deaderick, for her loving care and prayers and Odyssey Hospice nurse, Prinny Ham, home caregivers, Debra Jones and Gracie Leal, for their care, comfort and solace to L.O. Alma and the family wish to thank all who provided prayers, comfort and help. Services will be Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002, at 3 p.m. at St John’s Episcopal Church officiating Rev. Laura Deaderick. Internment will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens following the funeral service. Arrangements are entrusted to Sunset Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home.
L.O. was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Charles Bird, son, Johnny Bird, and grandson, John Cain. May they all rest in peace in the solace of the presence of God.

John R. ‘Bob’ Crabtree
ODESSA — John R. “Bob” Crabtree passed away Monday, Nov. 25, 2002, at his home after a battle with cancer. He was born Oct. 31, 1926, in Sagerton. He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church.
After graduating from Levelland High School in 1944, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in WWII, and served in the Philippines until his discharge in 1946. He enrolled in Texas Tech at Lubbock and graduated in 1949 with a degree in accounting.
He married Vera Foerster on Sept. 9, 1949, in Posey.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Vera Crabtree of Odessa; daughter; Pamela Morphew and her husband Chris of Midland; grandchildren, Blake, Emilie, Katelyn and Amanda Morphew, all of Midland; brothers, Lynn Crabtree and wife Marcella of Canyon; Jack Crabtree and wife Evelyn of Van Couver, Wash.; brother-in-law, Joe M. Jernigan of Houston, sisters-in-law, Lillian Crabtree of Farmington, N.M., and JoAnn Foerster of Rogers, Ark.; and numerous nieces and nephews. He retired from Amoco Production Company in 1986 after 25 years of service.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, November 29, 2002, at Redeemer Lutheran Church with the Rev. A. Dean Kelm officiating. Interment will be held at 4 p.m. at Andrews cemetery in Andrews.
Pallbearers will be Reggie Crabtree, Mickey Crabtree, Greg Crabtree, Blake Morphew, Derek Kelm and Keith Groumann.
Memorials may be give to Redeemer Lutheran Church or Odyssey Health Care Hospice Program.
Services under the direction of Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors.

Ruby Verna Dickson
CRANE — Ruby Verna Dickson, 86, of Crane died Sunday, November 24, 2002, in the Crane Memorial Hospital.
Funeral Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, November 27, 2002, at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Steve Baker officiating.
Burial will follow in the Crane County cemetery with services under the direction of Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home.
Mrs. Dickson was born May 22, 1916, in Lebo, Mo. She had lived in Crane since 1944. She was a housewife and had attended the First Baptist Church in Crane.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Dickson, on July 28, 1990, and a son, Clyde “Corkey” Dickson, on January 4, 1999; and two brothers, Avril Nelson and Billy Dean Nelson.
She is survived by her son, Ronnie Dickson and his wife Vanda of Odessa; four grandchildren, Dannes and Greg Turner, and Dennis and Bonnie Dickson all of Cross Plains, Susan Dickson of Midland, Mich., and Chris and Trenna Dickson of Odessa; six great grandchildren, Joseph Turner, Jennifer Turner, Dusty Dickson, Justin Dickson, and Samantha Dickson, all of Cross Plains, and Sara Kelly Dickson of Midland, Mich.; daughter-in-law, Peggy Dickson of Crane, and several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family wishes memorials be made to Rural Home Hospice of Crane.

Maria Cortez Galvan
ODESSA — Maria Cortez Galvan, 75, of Odessa passed away Sunday, Nov. 24, 2002, at the Hospice House. She was born May 26, 1927, in Terlingua. She married Luis Galvan on May 25, 1948, in Odessa. He preceded her in death Nov. 20, 2002. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Emiterio and Lazara Cortez and sister, Ricarda Soltero.
Maria was the beloved Matriarch of the Cortez Clan, always helpful in whatever manner, whether it was giving advice or administering a reprimand. She was a great role model as a spouse, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt or friend. All her siblings respected her and looked to her for guidance.
Maria was an excellent homemaker who was devoted to her husband, children, grandchildren and siblings. She was a caregiver who often went beyond the call of duty. She loved to crochet, sew and garden. Her garden always bloomed with beautiful flowers and vibrant green foliage.
Maria was a devout Christian lady, a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, who exuded a quiet and dignified grace about her. She was a devotee of the Blessed Mother and prayed many rosaries on a daily basis. She will be greatly missed by all whose life she gently touched.
She is survived by her son, Roberto Galvan and wife Guadalupe of Odessa; daughters, Maria Luisa Sanchez and husband Jesus of Indio Calif., and Araceli Hernandez and husband Samuel of Odessa and Armida Galvan of Austin; brothers, Miguel Cortez and wife Petra, Locadio Cortez and wife Benita, Jimmy Cortez and wife Socorro, Johnny Cortez, Evaristo Cortez and companion Patsy, all of Odessa; sisters, Paula Marquez and husband Carlos, Angie Alvarado and husband Manuel, and Yolanda Hernandez and husband Bobby, all of Odessa; eight grandchildren, Ana Maria Mejia, Jesus Sanchez Jr., Roberto Sanchez, Elizabeth Sanchez, Israel Galvan, Luis Galvan, Adriana “Nana” Galvan and Ariel Hernandez; eight great-grandchildren, Josie Rivas, Miguel Huerta, Jessica Sanchez, Jesus Sanchez III, Nickolas Sanchez, Ruby Sanchez, Samuel Sanchez and Tony Sanchez.
The funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with the Rev. David Herrera officiating. Interment will follow at Rose Hill cemetery. Pallbearers: Israel Galvan, Luis Galvan, Adriana “Nana” Galvan, Jesus Sanchez Jr., Chris Marquez and Charlie Marquez. Honorary pallbearers: Greg Marquez, David Marquez and Ariel Hernandez.
