Richard F. Wood
ODESSA — Richard F. Wood, 93, of Odessa passed away Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2003, at Hospice House in Odessa. He was born Sept. 20, 1909, in Clyde, Texas, to Frank and Viola Wood.
Graveside services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 7, 2003, at Sunset Memorial Gardens with Dr. Johnny Dickerson officiating. The family will be receiving visitors Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.
He had been a master mason for over 65 years. He married Maggie Olive Stewart on October 16, 1928, in Meridian. He grew up in Clyde and Abilene. He was a member of the Crescent Park Baptist Church. He worked for Gulf for 16 years, then he owned R&F Well Service and Eureka Inc. Later, he was a security guard for El Paso products and worked for OIME.
Both parents; three brothers, Willie, Lloyd, and Howard; and five sisters, Lillie, Sadie, Mattie, Molly, and Ethel, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his daughter, Janet L. Evans and husband, A.T., of Odessa; three grandchildren, Gary Evans and wife, Lori, Lynette Evans and Sheri Dann and husband, Keith; four great-grandchildren, Luke Anderson, Lorelei Giddens, Brad Evans and Emerson Grace Dann.
Memorials may be directed to Crescent Park Baptist. Services are entrusted to Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.

I. G. “Murt” Murchison
ODESSA — I. G. “Murt” Murchison, 86, of Odessa, passed from this life Tuesday, January 21, 2003. He was born July 30, 1916, to John Smith Murchison and Hattie Box Murchison in Crockett, Texas.
He attended Crockett High School in Crockett, Texas. Murt married Laverne Bodine April 7, 1939, in Abilene and was the owner and operator of Wayside Radiator for 50 years and Daniels Radiator Distributorship for 15 years. He was the past president of the Motorcoach Association as well as the Garageman Association. Murt has been a resident of Odessa since 1936, and has attended Eisenhower Church of Christ and Parkview Church of Christ, of which he is a former member.
He is survived by his wife, Laverne Bodine Murchison of Odessa; daughter, Ronda Gay Lyne of Odessa; granddaughter, Caleista Millican of Odessa; grandson, John Eric Lyne of San Antonio; brother, Billy Murchison; sister, Hattie Crow of College Station; sister, Nell Warden of Dallas; and two great grandchildren.
A visitation will be held Thursday, January 23, 2003, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. Services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday, January 24, 2003, at Sunset Memorial Chapel with Burt Groves officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to Lubbock Children’s Home. Arrangements are entrusted to Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.

Jose Esparza
ODESSA — Jose Esparza, 59, died Sunday, January 19, 2003, at Medical Center Hospital. Jose was born April 22, 1943, in Corpus Christi to father, Juan Esparza, and mother, Juana Tavarez, who preceded him in death. Mr. Esparza was a Jehovah Witness.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, January 24, 2003, at Kingdom Hall with Elder Alvaro Luna officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Lydia Esparza of Odessa; son, Joe Esparza and wife, Jennifer, of Odessa; three daughters, Juanita E. Valerio and husband, Adam, Aurora E. Hignojos and husband, Israel, and Lydia S. Aguirre and husband, Moses, all of Odessa; two sisters, Mary Wages and Francisca E. Garcia, both of Houston; five brothers, Alfredo Esparza, Hector Esparza, Richard Esparza and David Esparza, all of Houston, and Alfonso Esparza of Corpus Christi; 13 grandchildren, Samantha Soto, Ryan Soto, Israel O. Hignojos, Israel J. Hignojos, Isaac Hignojos, Alyssa Hignojos, Laurisa Aguirre, Kathlene Aguirre, Armanda Esparza, Vanessa Esparza, Cindy Esparza, Cassandra Esparza and Joseph Esparza, all of Odessa.
Dad, you will be deeply missed by your family and friends. Thank you for always being there for us. You will always be in our hearts.
Services under the direction of Martinez Funeral Home.

Frances Pauline Gaede
ODESSA — Frances Pauline Gaede, age 81, of Odessa died Tuesday, January 22, 2003, at Midland Memorial Hospital. She was born June 20, 1921, in Alpine.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, January 24, 2003, at Asbury United Methodist Church with Rev. Dave Dineen officiating. Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Gaede was a past member of Permian Basin Genealogical Society, Daughters of the Republic of Texas and Daughters of American Revolution. Frances was a very talented seamstress and had made many beautiful pieces of needlework, which she proudly displayed in her home. She was an active member of Asbury United Methodist Church and the church’s Women’s Group.
She is survived by her husband, Fred Gaede of Odessa; son, Tom Gaede of Houston; daughter, Linda Jatko of Parker, Colo.; sister-in-law, Marjorie Hamilton of Galveston; grandchildren, Kari Smith of Littleton, Colo., and Kent Neitzel of Parker, Colo.
If desired, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
Services under the direction of Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors.

Harriet Austin
ODESSA — Harriet N. Austin was born September 15, 1915, in San Antonio, Texas. She was one of three children born to German descendants Herman and Bertha Burkhardt.
In August of 1946, she married her husband of 22 years, A. D. Austin Jr. of Arlington, Texas. Both were employed by Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. In 1948, they moved to Odessa, Texas, where they made their home and raised three boys. And it was here that A. D. passed away in November of 1968.
Harriet was a member of Odessa Chapter No. 447 - Order of The Eastern Star since 1950. She served as Worthy Matron from 1960 to 1961 and again from 1985 to 1986. In 1976, she was appointed Grand Representative of The Grand Chapter of Rhode Island. Harriet was also a member of the Bethany Christian Church, Southwestern Bell Pioneers Club, Texas Zeta Omega Sorority and numerous social, civic, church and school organizations. Harriet never remarried – “One Man Was Enough!”
She is survived by her son, Ronnie of Rockwall, Texas, his wife, Cheryl, and three grandchildren, Barrett, Brittany and Dani, and one great-grandchild, Sydni; son, Alan Jr. of Mabank, Texas, his wife, Jan, and three grandchildren, Alan “Bubba,” Monica and Garon; and son, David, of Odessa, Texas, his wife, Pat, and two grandchildren, Stefany and Travis; two nieces of whom Harriet helped raise, Gail Heaslet of San Antonio, Texas, and Carol Duffin of Kemah, Texas. She is also survived by six nieces and two nephews.
The family will meet with friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, January 24, 2003, at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, January 25, 2003, at Bethany Christian Church with the Rev. Robert Scofield officiating, entombment to follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

Rebecca Duran
ODESSA — Rebecca Duran, age 47, passed from this life Wednesday, January 22, 2003. She was born June 3, 1955, in Austin, Texas, to Larry Ballard and Pearl Smith Ballard. Rebecca has been a resident of Odessa since 1989, coming from Austin, Texas, with her three children, and has been the manager of her own Real Estate Company.
Her mother, Pearl Ballard, and her son, Joshua Ballard, precede her in death. She is survived by her son, Kristian Alvarez of Odessa; her daughter, Karisa Garza of Austin; her father, Larry Ballard of San Marcos; her brothers, Bruce and Brent Ballard, both of Austin; her sister, Brenda Ballard of San Marcos; and 11 grandchildren.
Services will be held at Sunset Memorial Chapel Saturday, January 25, 2003, at 11 a.m. with Rev. James Bishop officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are entrusted to Sunset Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home.
Mom, Kristian and I shall miss you dearly. We wish we had more time to cherish and love you, but we know it is time for you to take Josh’s hand and walk to eternal life. Your worries and pain are gone. Rest in peace, our mother, Rebecca.

Frances Pauline Gaede
ODESSA — Frances Pauline Gaede, age 81, of Odessa died Wednesday, January 22, 2003, at Midland Memorial Hospital. She was born June 20, 1921, in Alpine.

James J. Goodwin
ROSWELL, N.M. — Services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, January 25, 2003, at the First Baptist Church for James J. Goodwin, age 35, of Roswell, who passed away January 21, 2003, at Eastern New Mexico Medical Center. Rev. Jason Kraft of the First Baptist Church will conduct the service. Interment will follow at South Park cemetery with posting of the colors by Roswell Police Department Honor Guard.
James was born June 27, 1967, in Fabens, Texas, to L. J. “Bud” and Judy Carlene Shumate Goodwin. His parents survive him in Santa Fe, N.M. He married Cathy Calloway June 6, 1992, in Odessa, Texas. She survives him at the family home.
Other survivors include a son, Cody Goodwin of Roswell; two daughters, Elicia Goodwin of Albuquerque, N.M., and Emilie Goodwin of Roswell, N.M. He is also survived by his grandmother, Gloria Shumate of Leander, Texas; two sisters, Cindy Phillips and her husband, Rev. Wes Phillips, of El Paso, Texas, and Naomi Smith and her husband, Michael, of Lubbock, Texas. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
James had been a police officer for the City of Roswell since 1998. He had served his country from 1987 until 1994 with the U.S. Army. He was with the Military Police 82nd Airborne at Fort Bragg. He served in Desert Storm.
James was a member of the First Baptist Church and a member of the Fraternal Order of Police. He was a field training officer and had been a member of the K-9 unit until his dog died with cancer. He was a DWI/Radar instructor.
James always had a twinkle in his eye and made friends with everyone he met. His love was his family He was a wonderful father and husband.
Pallbearers will be Sgt. Rodney Morris, Detective Mike Taylor, Officer Tony McIntire, Sgt. Dane Kyser, Officer Kim Northcutt and Deputy Paul Rains. All Law Enforcement personnel will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Friends may make memorials to the American Cancer Society, 1111 S. Penn, Roswell, N.M. 88203, or the Fraternal Order of Police, P.O. Box 925, Roswell, N.M. 88202.
Arrangements are under the direction of LaGrone Funeral Chapel and Crematory.

Alfred P. “Al” harris
KERMIT — Alfred P. “Al” harris, 87 years old, of Kermit, Texas, passed from this life and entered the Church Triumphant Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003.
Al was born Aug. 27, 1915, in Mills County, Texas, to William Alfred and Ada Jane Harris of Goldthwaite, Texas. He attended the Goldthwaite Public Schools.
On Oct. 28, 1937, Al was married to Lillian Lore Renfro. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this past October.
Al worked for El Paso Natural Gas from 1951 to 1980 when he retired.
In 1994, he began working with his son-in-law at Thomas Billiard Balls because he found retirement too boring.
Al liked to build and repair striking clocks. In his 87th year, he began taking bagpipe lessons.
He served in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre as a diesel mechanic. He was a sergeant. Al served in Headquarters Company U.S. Army Forces New Caledonia APO 502. He is preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Lois Pence, Annie Casbeer, a brother-in-law, Melvin Harris, and infant daughter, Linda Sue Harris.
He is survived by his wife, Lore Harris of Kermit, a son, Alfred M. Harris of Odessa; daughters, Ann Hurt of Fort Stockton and Rebecca Thomas of Odessa. Also grandchildren, Sandra Susan Harris, Nanci Dianne Harris and Dallas Randolph Hurt. He is survived by a sister, Elsie Heath of Temple, Texas, and a brother, Edward R. Harris of Goldthwaite, Texas.
Services will be held Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, at 10 a.m. at Belvue Baptist Church. Interment will be in Goldthwaite, Texas, Sunday, Jan. 26, at 10 a.m. There will be a graveside service.
Al’s sweet spirit and sense of humor will be greatly missed by his family and a multitude of friends. Al was a loving husband, father and PaPa who worked hard all of his life to provide for his family. Al was a gentleman and a gentle man.
Services entrusted to Cooper Funeral Chapel.
