L. “Dale” Walters
ODESSA — L. “Dale” Walters, 60, passed away Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, at his residence.
He was born October 26, 1942, to Lloyd Franklin and Delilah Walters in Temple, Okla. Dale married
Carla Carner on June 10, 1962, in Odessa.
He enjoyed fishing, sightseeing, and photography. He loved being around his kids and grandkids. He worked for Three Way Construction, Holloman Construction and Universal Inspection and various other contractors. He traveled the USA working on pipelines for over 40 years. He loved the challenge of work.
Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, at Hubbard-Kelly Chapel with the Rev. Owen Sharp, Chaplain of Odyssey Hospice, officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Dale is preceded in death by his father, Lloyd Walters.
Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Carla Walters; two sons, Allen Walters and wife, Shawna; Danny Walters and wife, Tammy; one daughter, LaDonna Walters; and mother, Lucy Walters, all of Odessa; three brothers, Larry Don Walters and wife, Sandy, of Odessa; Cecil Wayne Walters and wife, Ellen of Aztec, NM; and Jackie McCain and wife, Billie, of Odessa; three grandchildren, Amanda Dale, Keith Wayne and Randy Wayne Walters; numerous nieces, nephews, family and friends, including his best friend, Willie Harris and wife, Theresa, of Odessa; and his beloved Shi Tzu, Penny.

Truman Jones
BIG SPRING — Truman Jones, 88, of Big Spring, died at 2:32 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003, at his residence following a lengthy illness.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, at Trinity Memorial Park. Memorial services will follow at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Flynn Long officiating.
Mr. Jones was born on Sept. 13, 1914, in Marion, Ind. He was the son of Nora Wiley Jones and William “Bill” Jones. He grew up in Fort Worth and was a veteran, having served with the Marines as a radio communication specialist during World War II.
He married
Dotsy Jones on Oct. 11, 1943, in San Diego. They moved to Big Spring from Odessa in 1948. She preceded him in death on June 26, 1998.
He opened Truman Jones Motor Company in Big Spring in 1947 and was the Lincoln-Mercury dealer for more than 20 years. He served on the National Advertising Board for Lincoln. His dealership sold more Lincolns per capita than any other dealership in the nation for several years. After selling the automobile dealership, he was involved in land brokerage and sales, the most recent being at Timberon, N.M.
Mr. Jones was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, having served as a deacon and elder. He was involved in a number of civic activities, especially the Chamber of Commerce. He served as president and was also Man of the Year.
He is survived by his daughter, Libby Jacobus of Midland; four grandchildren, Ann Jacobus Kordahl and husband Jim of Paris, France, Bill Jacobus of Tallahassee, Fla., Lacy Jacobus Ficklen and husband Robert of Coppell and Todd Jacobus of Washington, D.C.; six great-grandchildren; one sister, Juanita Haynie of Fort Worth; and six nieces.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Richard Jones.
The family suggests memorials to the Parlor Fund at the First Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 2222, Big Spring, Texas 79721.

Mary Joyce Harding
ODESSA — Mary Joyce Harding left this world Saturday, January 18, 2003, after a long and courageous fight against breast cancer. She is survived by husband, Nathan Robert Harding of Odessa; children, Sherie and Jack of Los Angeles and Long Beach, Calif.; sister, Doris Darby of Odessa; brother, Pete Rolland of Dallas; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by parents, D.O. and Elizabeth Rolland, and brother, Ed Rolland.
Mary Joyce was born in Clovis, N.M., November 5, 1935, and lived in the great state of Texas her entire life. After graduating as valedictorian of her class in 1954, she married
Nathan in June that same year. The pair moved to Fort Worth where Mary Joyce immediately began her life-long commitment to education.
She attended Texas Christian University and transferred to Texas Women’s University in 1956, where she received a bachelor of science degree, after which the couple moved to Odessa and she embarked upon her teaching career in 1957.
In 1960, the couple moved briefly to Lubbock, where Mary Joyce continued teaching at both New Deal and Monterrey. Nathan and Mary Joyce returned to Odessa in 1964 when they both accepted jobs with ECISD. Mary Joyce later began teaching at Odessa College in the Home Economics department. Children came along, Sherie in 1965, followed closely by Jack in 1966.
Mary Joyce began pursuing her Master’s Degree in 1970, all the while working and raising a family. She received her degree from Texas Women’s University and shortly thereafter was given the title “Professor.” During this time, she was a major participant in developing the Child Development program at Odessa College. She was appointed Chair of that department, but later returned to teaching, which was her first passion. Mary Joyce continued pursuing her education and finished all the required coursework for her Doctorate degree in counseling.
Mary Joyce was active in her church and her spiritual community. She loved teaching, traveling, theatre and new experiences. She was always willing to offer an attentive ear and sound advice to anyone who asked.
She was a truly independent spirit who was ahead of her time while being a loving wife, encouraging mother, compassionate teacher and supportive, sensible friend. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003, at First Baptist Church of Odessa. The family suggests that, in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Allison Cancer Center in Midland or to the Mary Joyce Harding Scholarship Fund for Child & Parent Development Students at Odessa College.
William Leon Stricklan
ELDORADO — William Leon Stricklan went to be with the Lord Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003, at his home in Eldorado, Texas. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, January 22, 2003, at First Baptist Church, Eldorado, Texas, with the Rev. Andy Anderson officiating. Arrangements are entrusted to Kerbow Funeral Home, Eldorado, Texas.
Leon was born April 28, 1923, in Colorado City, Texas, to Linerd and Letha Stricklan. He attended school in Colorado City and was a member of the United States Army, having served in World War II. He married
Mary Etta Davidson in McCamey, Texas, and they were married
for 52 years before her death in 1999. Leon married
Olean Poor in April 2001.
Leon is survived by his wife, a wonderful angel, Olean, who was beside him during every minute of his battle with cancer. Leon is also survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Rick and Lori Stricklan of Eldorado; daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Toby Tripp of Odessa; step-daughter and husband, Teresa and Ronnie Morgan of San Angelo and step-daughter Betsy Barton of Kerrville; grandchildren, Melanie Stricklan of Warner Robbins AFB, Georgia, Traci Stricklan of Austin, Brad and Carie Beaty of Huntsville, Brian and Chessy Madison of Dallas, Bryan Tripp of Dallas, Seth and Sean Long of San Angelo, Adrian, Samantha and Ginny Barton of Kerrville, Lori and Kevin Gray of Odessa; great-grandchildren, Megan, Kendall and Garrett Gray of Odessa; brothers, Jack Stricklan of Albuquerque, Ronnie Stricklan of Kennewick, Washington; sisters, Mary Cedillo of Abilene, and June Henley of Fort Worth; numerous nieces and nephews and a host of beloved friends.
Leon was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary Etta, his parents, his sister, Dimple Harwell, and brother, Clarence Stricklan.
Leon was a member of First Baptist Church, Eldorado, Texas, where he served as a Deacon, and was active in Sunday school and Senior Ambassadors. Leon was an U.S. Army Veteran and a member of the Eldorado American Legion, and retired from ARCO in 1985.
Our Papaw, uncle papaw, father, and friend will be missed so much by his family and by the community where he made his home for more than 30 years. Driven by a kindred spirit he loved bringing joy and laughter to his family and friends with his wonderful sense of humor and beautiful gift of playing the harmonica. He was a giving man that offered our community his hard working hands. Always the first to fix whatever needed fixing. His generosity will not soon be forgotten, driving buses for the school and Senior Ambassador trips, volunteering with the children’s reading program, and always giving more than was asked of him. He endeared himself to everyone. Leon particularly enjoyed fishing, hunting, traveling, and playing his harmonica while his son, Rick, played the guitar. He always had a kind encouraging word for all. He saw the good in everyone and left us all with a touch of heaven.
In the words of Leon’s stepdaughter, Betsy, “Leon had a beautiful heart.”

Dorothy Jane Jackson
KERMIT — Dorothy Jane Jackson, age 64, of Kermit passed away Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, at her residence. Ms. Jackson was born March 27, 1938, in Wink to Bill and Martha (Mosley) Jackson. The family moved to Kermit in 1945.
Dorothy attended school in Wink and graduated from Kermit High School in 1957. She graduated from Sul Ross University in 1961 with degrees in Speech-Drama, English and Physical Education. Upon graduation, she participated in theatre productions in Long Island, N.Y., and Pasadena, Calif.
Dorothy was a prominent, knowledgeable businesswoman in the oil and gas industry. She and her father were partners in Jal Fishing Tool Company, an oilfield rental and fishing tool business. She was a partner in Jackson Rental and Sales and Cable Tool Drilling Company. The last 25 years, Dorothy was an active co-owner of J-J Rentals & Fishing Tools in Kermit.
When Dorothy was not busy with her career, she enjoyed golf, her miniature horse, Moon Shadow, her dog, Lady Jasmine Rose, Pete Fountain’s jazz, reading and spending time with her family.
Dorothy was a member of the First United Methodist Church. Her greatest love in life was her family and friends. She was a loyal, dedicated, loving daughter, sister, aunt and friend. She will be missed, but her memory will be with us always.
She was preceded in death by her father, Bill Jackson. Dorothy is survived by her mother, Martha Jackson of Kermit; one brother, Richard Jackson of Kermit; two sisters, Susie Jordan and husband, Larry, of Abilene and Betty Ruth McAnally and husband, Randy, of Midland; nephews, Blaine McAnally and wife, Jana, of Dallas and Scott Jordan and wife, Stacie, of Henderson; nieces, Alison Gibson and husband, Eric, of Lubbock and Kellye Humble and husband, Jason, of Midland; great-nephews, Blake Humble and Jackson Jordan; great-nieces, Sarah and Kate Jordan; and her aunt, Mrs. Dorothea Brenner of Dallas.
Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 20, 2003, at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Beth Harrington officiating with the assistance of Pastor Gary Day of Blanket, Texas. Interment will follow at Kermit cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to Family Services Funeral Parlor of Kermit.

Zurel Dempsey King
ODESSA — Zurel Dempsey King, 79, of Odessa passed from this life Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003. He was born Feb. 2, 1923, in Blocker, Okla., to Nancy and Avey King. He came to Odessa in 1956 from Wichita, Kan.
Zurel was an Army Veteran of WWII and received honors for Good Conduct. He also received the Distinguished Unit Badge and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with two stars. He married
Thelma Bailey Sept. 27, 1948, in Purcell, Okla. Zurel retired as a repairman for Cities Service. He was a member of Temple Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Thelma King of Odessa; sons, Charles Willis of Redding, Calif., and Bob Willis of Livermore, Calif.; daughters, Dayna Smith and Debbie Thompson, both of Odessa; grandchildren, Jayda Palmour, Edna Ochoa, Raelyn Smith, Skylar Smith, Mark Willis, Ryan Willis, Jayme Willis, Ricky Thompson, Tammye Hayes and Tana Priest; and eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, at Sunset Memorial Gardens Chapel with the Rev. Emmett Barnard with interment following at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are entrusted to Sunset Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home.

Mary Helen Watson
MIDLAND — Mary Helen Watson passed away Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003, in Odessa, TX.
She was born Sept. 14, 1915, in Roxton, TX, to E. E. Hawkes and Addie Burkett Hawkes. After graduating from Roxton High School, Mary Helen received her degree from East TX State Teacher’s College, Commerce, TX. In 1936, she married
J.A. “Toby” Arnold and he preceded her in death in 1951. Prior to her retirement in 1966, she was employed with First National Bank of Midland. In 1989 she married
O. C. Watson and he preceded her in death in 1995. She was a member of Northside Baptist Church in Odessa and Pastworthy Matron of the Eastern Star in Commerce, TX.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, sisters, Nola, Alta, Lena Mae and Mildred, and brother, E.W. (Son) Hawkes.
Mary Helen is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Mary Jane and Edd Tyler of Odessa, TX; granddaughters, Debbie Haechten of Linden and Elaine Kemp and husband, Richard, of Watauga, TX; step-grandson, Tommy Tyler and wife, Amy, of Garland, TX; great-grandson, Jared Haechten of Wills Point, TX; great-granddaughter, Jessica Haechten of Wagener, S.C.; step-great-grandson, Tate Tyler of Garland, TX; and several nieces and nephews.
