BALMORHEA — Pilar Q. Montoya, 67, of Balmorhea, a retired farmer and rancher, died Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003, at his residence.
Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. today at Christ the King Catholic Church. Burial will be at the Balmorhea cemetery. Arrangements by Peaceful Garden Funeral Home of Pecos.
He was born in Los Fresno, Mexico. He was Catholic.

ODESSA — Archie Whitaker, 85, of Odessa died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, at Medical Center Hospital.
John K. Bullion
ODESSA — John K. Bullion, 76, passed away Feb. 7, 2003, at Medical Center Hospital.
He was born Oct. 21, 1926, in Gilliland, Texas, to John and Selma Bullion. He married
Frankie Polk on Oct. 21, 1950 in Lovington, N.M. and came to Odessa in 1957 from Truscott, Texas.
John was a veteran and worked for S.L. Briley Construction from 1963 to 1983. He formed his own company, John Bullion Asphalt, where he remained self-employed until he retired in 1992.
Graveside Services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Monday, February 10, 2003, at Sunset Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Jimmy Braswell officiating.
John is survived by his wife, Frankie Bullion of Odessa; sons, John A. Bullion and wife Paula of Odessa, and Jerry L. Bullion and wife Belinda of Houston; brother, Sam Bullion and family of Lubbock; four grandchildren, Tami Bullard and husband Justin of Odessa, Sara Bullion of Garland, Texas, Jacob Bullion of Sam Houston University in Huntsville, Texas, and Amanda Bullion of Houston, Texas; and two great-grandchildren, Kamryn Hill of Odessa and Preston Hill of Odessa.

Alice Rothganger
MIDLAND — Alice Rothganger, 90, died Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2003, at her place of residence in Odessa, Texas. She was born Nov. 4, 1912, to Mary Etta McClellan and Roy B. Bozarth.
She attended school in Lenora, Kan., and graduated from Kansas State University, working her way through school as a piano accompanist, graduating cum laude and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. She also received a scholarship to the Julliard School of Music. She began her career as a teacher in Kansas, and In 1936 married
Byron L. Davis and moved to Denver, Colo.
During World War II, Alice worked as a supervisor at the Remington Arms Ammunition Plant in Colorado. She taught music and English, for the next 25 years in the Denver Public Schools. She married
Hy H. Rothganger in 1966 and moved to Canon City, Colo., where she lived until her husband’s health declined. Alice lived her final years in Odessa, Texas, where she could be near some of her family. She was a born-again Christian and enjoyed gardening and music. She loved her dogs and named them all Laddie.
She is survived by daughters, Jeannine Englehart and her husband Wayne of Fountain Valley, Calif., and Jackie Stumpff of Midland, Texas. In addition, she is survived by her stepdaughters, Sally (Gary) Grimlund and Elisa (Terry) Lais; her grandchildren, Yvonne (Daniel) Lewis, Gena (Rowland) Ramos, Shauna Stumpff and her fiancé, Ross Bowman and Michael Englehart. She is also survived by her niece, Karen (Phil) Bowman; nephew, Don (JoAnn) Bozarth; and great-grandchildren, Mark, Caitlin, Ryan, Joshua, Rachel and Omar.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Hy, and her brother, Farrell. A memorial service has been scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday, February 10 at Immanuel Baptist Church in Odessa.
The family would like to thank Sherry Rimes and the staff at Chris’ Retirement Home for all their loving care of Alice. Memorials may be made to Lone Star SPCA, 4200 N. Fairgrounds Road, Midland, TX 79705. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

Dorothy Lee Lester
ODESSA – Dorothy Lee Lester, 72, of Odessa, passed away Friday, Feb. 7, 2003, in her home surrounded by her loving family.
Mrs. Lester was born Nov. 23, 1930, in Gonzales, Texas.
Dorothy was a loving wife, mother and grandmother to her adoring grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is survived by her loving husband of 53 years, R.G. Lester; her three daughters, Elizabeth Barlow and husband Bob of Odessa, Susan Lee and husband Gene of Midland, Madeline Averill and husband Bill of Centerville, Utah; eight grandchildren, Chris Sestric and wife LaRhonda of Odessa, John Sikes and fiancée Martha Wilkes of Salt Lake City, Utah, Steve Sestric of San Marcos, Robert Barlow and wife Tasha of Austin, Petty Officer HM3 Aaron Sikes and wife Hailey of Oceanside, Calif., Paul Sestric and wife Annette of Odessa, Sharon McLaren and fiancé Marcus Rixner of Holiday, Utah, and David Barlow of Odessa; nine great-grandchildren; two brothers, George Marrou and wife Helen of San Antonio, and Willie Marrou and wife Evelyn of Beaumont; one sister, Helen Cady of San Antonio, and many dear family and friends.
Dorothy was a retired bookkeeper and a past member of American Business and Professional Women’s Organization. She was very active in her church in many capacities including The Legion of Mary. Her passions were her family, sewing and traveling. Dorothy’s family was always first and foremost in her heart. She will be remembered for her compassion, her love and her generous spirit. This spirit will continue through the lives of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be dearly missed but remembered always.
Public visitation will be today at the Frank W. Wilson Funeral Home.

Thomas Richard ‘Dick’ Stagg
ODESSA — Thomas Richard “Dick” Stagg passed away Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003, in Odessa, Texas.
He was born July 29, 1924, in Clinton, Iowa, to Foster and Irma Stagg. He was raised in Thomson, Ill., where his parents owned and operated four weekly newspapers. Review Publications Inc. in Thomson, Ill. included the Thomson Review, the Chadwick Review, the Lanark Gazette and the Shannon Reporter. Dick started his newspaper career at the age of 12 after school by cleaning up, putting things away and melting the lead.
When his father died suddenly in October 1941, and his older brother and most of the help were drafted into the service, Dick and his mother ran the newspapers throughout World War II. Dick did the production work including running the Linotype, double revolution press, folder and advertising sales and his mother did the news. After the war, Dick attended Western Illinois University for two years and the University of Missouri School of Journalism for one year, where he was the editor of the college newspaper. Then, being drafted into the U.S. Army for two years, he served in the Medical Corp., before returning to Thomson, Ill., where he and his brother ran the newspapers until they sold them in June 1967.
In August 1967, Dick purchased the Crane News in Crane, Texas. He operated it for 25 years, selling it in August 1992 and retired to Odessa, Texas, where he had a 35-space mobile home park, which he started in June 1979.
Dick is survived by his wife, Lucy Ann Stagg of Odessa, Texas; son, Mark Stagg and wife Jennifer and their children, Kristine Faulkenberg, Josephine, Jacqueline, Jeanette and Juliene Stagg, of New Braunfels, Texas; stepdaughter, Cheryl Hughes; stepsons, Scott Saxton and Chris Saxton; six step-grandchildren; sister, Elynor King of Clinton, Iowa.
Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. today at Ellis Funeral Home.
Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Monday at Fairview cemetery with the Rev. Robert Kepple officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home.
Pallbearers are Mark Stagg, Mark Hughes, Chris Saxton, Scott Saxton, Mike Stafford and Steve Hargrove.

Ralph E. Landford Jr.
ODESSA — Mr. Ralph E. Landford Jr. of Odessa passed away Friday, Jan. 17, 2003, at the age of 79, at the Hospice House in Odessa. He was born on May 6, 1923, in Lacklick, Ohio, to Ralph E. Landford Sr. and Bertha Lorrine Foor.
Mr. Landford Jr. was a postal carrier for over 30 yrs. He also enjoyed working on golf carts. Ralph served in the US Army during WWII. He married
Dorothy L. Brandun Aug. 4, 1946.
Memorial services are schedule for Sunday, Feb. 2, 2003, at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. Jimmy Braswell officiating. The VFW will perform full military honors.

Arch A. Metzger Jr.
ODESSA — Arch A. Metzger Jr., 80, of Odessa passed away Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003, at Medical Center Hospital. Arch was born Aug. 24, 1922, to Lydia Puckey Metzger and Arch August Metzger Sr. in Mason where he grew up.
He joined the Army Air Force in 1942 and served in the 8th Air Force 447th Bombardment Group, 711 Bombardment Squadron. He was stationed in England and flew 31 missions as a tail gunner in a B17. He was shot in the leg over Frankfort Germany. He was discharged as a staff sergeant.
He married
Norma Raney Nov. 12, 1943, in Denver, Colo. He worked for Gulf Oil Corp from February 1946 until he retired in 1985 as a senior supervisor at Penwell. He helped with Grove Trains from 1990 until his death.
He was a member of First Christian Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents and son, Richard.
He is survived by his wife, Norma Metzger of Odessa; sons, David Metzger of Odessa and Glenn Metzger of Gretna, La.; brother, Herbert Metzger of Seattle, Wash.; sisters, Emily Steves of Danbury and Betty Jane Leach of Sedona, Ariz.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003, at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. David Weyant and Dr. David Mindel officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Jean Ann Padgett
ODESSA — Jean Ann Padgett, 67, of Odessa passed away Monday, Jan. 20, 2003, at her home.
She was born June 20, 1935, in Loraine, Texas, to Charles and Nettie Hale. She married
J.W. Padgett Jr. June 5, 1954, in Midland. He preceded her in death in 2000.
She loved spending time with her grandchildren. She was also dedicated to her work with Advance Cleaning and her service to Jehovah through the North Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 3625 W. 11th St., in Odessa.
Survivors include her daughter, Pamela Recker of Odessa; grandchildren, Kim Combs of Lubbock and Nikki Recker of Odessa; sisters, Bernice Vannoy, Averill Padgett and Lura Davis, all of Midland, Betty Crocker of Big Spring and Mayme McFerris of Welect, Okla.; brothers, Bill Hale of Lake Brownwood, Kenneth Hale of Lake Proctor, Charles Hale, Hubert Hale and Doyle Hale, all of Stanton.
