Joe Suggs passed away Tuesday, June 3, 2003, just outside of Pecos, Texas. Joe, his wife, Gladys Atkinson Suggs, and daughter, Eileen Suggs Cook, were involved in a vehicle accident as they were returning from visiting the couple’s other two children, Jane and Joe Suggs, in California. Gladys Suggs is currently recovering from her injuries at Regency Hospital in Odessa, Texas.
Joe M. Suggs was born December 29, 1924, in Abilene, Texas to Joseph Atlas Suggs and Flora Barnett Suggs. He enlisted in the United States Navy on his 17th birthday which was just three weeks after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He served his country for the duration of World War II. After receiving three weeks of basic training at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station, he was sent overseas and did not return to the U.S. mainland for two years. Most of his combat experience occurred on the U.S.S. Portland as it engaged in some of the most crucial battles in the South Pacific: Coral Sea, Midway, Guadalcanal (Tulagi Landings), Eastern Solomons, Santa Cruz Islands, Guadalcanal (its capture and Third Savo), Gilbert Islands and the Marshalls.
While on liberty in Long Beach, CA, he met his future wife of 58 years, Gladys Atkinson Suggs. The couple moved to Odessa in 1950 where they owned and operated Suggs Dental Laboratory. In May 2002, due to the effects of Macular Degeneration on his eye sight, Mr. Suggs closed the laboratory after 52 years of service to area dentists.
Mr. Suggs was a dedicated member of the Dental Laboratory Association of Texas (DLAT) and served as its President in 1980. He traveled many miles and gave generously of his time as he assisted the association’s successful effort to get state legislation passed which requires laboratories in Texas to have a Certified Dental Technician on staff in order to register with the State Board of Dental Examiners. The association recognized his leadership and contributions to the advancement of dental technology by inducting him into its Hall of Fame in 1990. Only nine dental technicians have been honored with induction into the Hall of Fame since the organization’s creation in 1944.
As part of his service to the Dental Laboratory Association of Texas, Mr. Suggs proudly represented the organization’s members in the House of Delegates of the National Association of Dental Laboratories (NADL). He also served as a District Councilman to the Executive Council of the NADL. In that capacity he represented the 6th District which included Texas, Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri and Arkansas. Mr. Suggs received the NADL’s Merit Award for Service as well as its Lifetime Award for his outstanding contributions to the profession of Dental Laboratory Technology.
A member of the Odessa East Rotary Club since 1964, Mr. Suggs served as a past president of the local club and was named a Paul Harris Fellow by The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International.
Joe Suggs was especially proud of the State of Texas when it recently enacted legislation which authorized local school districts to issue high school diplomas to World War II veterans who dropped out of school to serve in the military. In December, 2001, he received his high school diploma from Abilene High School and was recognized as a graduating member of the Class of 1942.
Joe Suggs is survived by his wife, Gladys Atkinson Suggs. He is also survived by his brothers, Bill Suggs and Jerry Suggs, both of Dexter, N.M., and his sister, Mary Nell Hodkin of Dallas, Texas. His daughters are Jane Suggs of Tustin, Calif., and Eileen Suggs Cook of San Antonio, Texas. His son is Joe M. Suggs, Jr. of Tustin, Calif. and his son-in-law is Buddy Cook, of San Antonio, Texas. His grandchildren are Brian Cook and his wife Denver of San Antonio, Texas, Brent Cook and his wife Rachel of San Diego, Calif., and John W. Seitz Jr. of Plano, Texas. He is also survived by long-time employee and family friend, Bobbye Goodson of Odessa, Texas.
Since his retirement last year, the family of Joe Suggs heard him express frequent appreciation for the staff and services provided by the Texas Commission for the Blind as well as for the retirement dinner held at the home of Dr. Meeks and attended by local dentists and their staff.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any memorials or contributions on behalf of Joe M. Suggs be made to the Dental Laboratory Association of Texas Scholarship Fund which awards at least two scholarships to dental technician students each year. Memorials can be mailed to: Dental Laboratory Association of Texas Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 140769, Dallas, TX 75214.
