Fred T. Howard Sr.
ODESSA — Fred T. Howard Sr. died on Saturday, April 26, 2003, in Abilene, Texas. He was born in Ste. Genevieve, Mo., on Oct. 12, 1928, where he worked as an underwater welder in the St. Louis shipyards. He moved his family to Texas in April 1978. He worked as a welder, pumper and crew chief in the oilfield, welding being his favorite. He was a strong-willed Irishman who loved to cook, fish, read western novels and watch John Wayne movies, bar-b-que and on occasion tell a story or two.
He never met a stranger and liked to greet people by saying “Top of the morning to you and the rest of the day for meself.” He was a good friend who would give you the shirt off his back. He was a good father to his children who will miss him deeply.
He is survived by son, Fred Howard Jr. of Kermit; daughters, Stacey Anguish and husband, Keith, of Andrews, Lisa Worden and her husband, Doc, of Breckinridge, Diana Weddle and her husband, Andrew, of Odessa, Betty Walker and her husband, Clifford, of N. Little Rock, Ark., Michelle Herman and husband, Andrew James, of Odessa; brother, Sam Howard of Little Rock, Ark.; sons, Richard and Claude Howard of Little Rock; and his grandchildren whom he loved so much, K.T. and Brian Anguish of Andrews, Darrell and Beth Ray of Lewisville, Andy A., Cole and Hope Weddle of Odessa, Kimberly, Dalton, and Kaitlynn Jones of Odessa.

Anna Dell Stephens
ODESSA — Anna Dell Stephens, 82, of Odessa passed away April 26, 2003, at Hospice House in Odessa. She was born April 4, 1921, in Leonard, Texas, to Clarence C. and Lou Anna Partain.
Graveside services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 29, 2003, at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Services are under the care of Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.
Anna Dell Stephens married
Chester C. Stephens on April 25, 1939. They moved to Odessa in 1942. She worked at the Odessa Cleaners and later owned and operated Stephens Cleaners for 10 years before retiring. She was a member of Temple Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years in November, 2000.
Survivors include one daughter, Connie Stephens Long and husband, John R., of Aztec, N.M.; sister, Dorothy Goodwin and husband, Gerald, of Palm Bay, Fla.; brothers, Loyd Partain and wife, Annie, of Bonham, Texas, Tommy Partain and wife, Jo Anna, of Knoxville, Tenn.; three grandchildren, Malissa Blackmon and husband, Joe Henry, of Odessa, Christine Baker and husband, Sam, of Aztec, N.M., Frankie Wayne Garrett and wife, Misty, of Magnolia, Texas; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Gayle Harrison
ODESSA — The sweet spirit of Marion Gayle Griffin Harrison, a longtime Odessa resident, departed this life Friday, April 25, 2003, in Haskell. A commitment service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in Sunset Memorial Gardens under the direction of Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. A memorial service will follow at 3 p.m. in the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Stephen Deines officiating.
The only child of Timothy Joseph and Maude Irene Klement Griffin, Gayle was born Oct. 21, 1918, in Wichita Falls. She married
Joe B. Harrison on July 1, 1946, in Wichita Falls.
Gayle was a graduate of Wichita Falls High School, Hardin College (MSU) and Texas State College for Women (TWU). She taught school at Byres and Henrietta before moving to Odessa in 1943. For 16 years, she taught English and drama for Ector County ISD and, in addition, taught private speech lessons. She also was the first director of the Children’s Theatre, sponsored by the Junior Service League.
A former member of the Rhythmettes, a senior citizen rhythm band, Gayle belonged to the Floyd Easterling # 1074 Order of the Eastern Star for 34 years. She was a member of the Odessa Study Club, the Texas Retired Teachers Association and the alumni associations of Midwestern State University and Texas Women’s University. She had been a member of the Presbyterian Church for over 50 years where she was active in the Women of the Church and taught Sunday school.
Gayle and her husband, Joe, were part of the original group of city residents instrumental in bringing The Parks Good Samaritan Retirement Village to Odessa. She resided there for 15 years. While at The Parks, she served as president of the resident council and chairman of the religious activities committee.
A good neighbor, Gayle will be remembered for her friendly smile, her Irish wit and her appreciation of music and theatre. She loved to entertain and socialize.
Her husband preceded her in death on Dec. 31, 1990.
Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Becky and Mike Sullivan of Plano; daughter, Jill Druesedow of Haskell; granddaughters, Stacey Sullivan of Richardson and Brooke Sullivan of Houston; grandsons, Harrison Druesedow of Snyder and Dawson Druesedow of Wichita Falls; cousin, Darwin and wife Marilyn Spatz of Sacramento, Calif.

Bessie Clark
STANTON — Bessie Mae Clark passed away on Thursday, April 24 in Stanton. She was born on May 6, 1916, in Wheeler to John Ficke and Harriet Elizabeth (McBee) Ficke.
She graduated from Wheeler High School and Draughn’s Business College in Oklahoma City in 1936. After which she moved to Odessa and went to work for Ector County Tax Collector Bob Bates as chief deputy until 1960. She ran for county tax collector, losing by 94 votes, and subsequently went to work for Ector County Abstract Company as office manager until her retirement in 1981. In 1954, she built a new house in which she reared her nephew, Ron Johnson. On April 2, 1970, she married
Ray Clark of Odessa, who preceded her in death in 1994. In 1997, she moved from Lincoln Towers to Cimarron House in Midland and in 2001, to Stanton Care & Rehab. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Odessa. She was a member of the Fidelis Sunday School Class, Odessa Pioneer’s Study Club, Oldtimer’s Club and Perky Peers.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ray Clark; brother John Ficke; sisters, Leona Hall, Silva Dillard, Faye Gwyn, Marguerite Philpott, Lois Poe and Ferrol Voliva. She is survived by her stepchildren, Ruth Anne Chatman of Wichita Falls, Bill Clark of Aurora, Ill., Francis Goodwin and husband Tommy of Wichita Falls; nephews/nieces Ron Johnson, Gary Hall, Bob Dillard, all of Midland, Bill Dillard of Grapevine, John Poe of Keller, Sue Seibert of Mineral Wells and Linda Franklin of San Antonio will forever cherish fond memories of the special times she spent with each of them.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Blossom Matthews of First United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Mary Louise Griffing
FORT WORTH — Mary Louise Griffing, 96, loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother went to be with the Lord on April 24, 2003, in Fort Worth.
Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 29, at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Odessa, with Rev. Andrew Pittman, First Baptist Church of Canton, Miss., officiating. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday at Thompson’s Harveson & Cole Funeral Home.
Mary Louise Griffing was born December 25, 1906 in Whistler, Ala., to Benjamin Ryalls Gaston and Minnie Lee Newell. She graduated from Arkansas College in Batesville, Ark, with an Education Degree and taught school in McGehee and El Dorado, Ark.
After her marriage to Norman Frisbee Griffing on March 11, 1932, she taught school in various places in the south while Norman followed a 40-year career with the U.S. Corps of Engineers. Survivors: daughter, Jo Ellen Lees and husband, Dick, of Fort Worth; grandchildren, Laurie Moody McDonald and husband, Michael, of Hillsboro; Fletcher Moody and wife, Cindy, of Denton; Shauna Moody Pittman and husband, Andy, of Canton, Miss., also, Dallas Lees Owen and husband, Rick, of Burleson, Bruce Lees of Arlington and Leann Lees White and husband, Joe, of Fort Worth. She also leaves twelve great grandchildren, niece, Gari Zegan of Florida and nephews, Claude Dunn, Jimmy Clark and Kelly Clark of Arkansas.

Cecil Meredith
LIVINGSTON — Cecil Harrison Meredith, age 53, died on April 25, 2003, at his home in Livingston. He was born March 8, 1950, in Junction, the son of George Cecil Meredith and Cora Athlene Milsap Meredith. He is preceded in death by his parents. He served in the Air Force from 1974 to 1977. He married
Elizabeth Oliver Meredith June 17, 1993, in San Angelo. He graduated from Angelo State University in 1994 and returned to college later to pursue a teaching degree. He was chosen as “Teacher of the Year” at Livingston Junior High in 2001-2002. He was a member of Blanchard Baptist Church and taught Sunday school.
He is survived by wife, Elizabeth Meredith of Livingston; grandson Paul Meredith of Livingston; daughter and son-in-law, Trina and Charlie Schmidt of Mason; sons and daughter-in-law, Pat Meredith of Leakey, Troy Meredith of Uvalde, Will (Zane) Neely of Sequin, Wesley and Angie Neely of Bonham; brothers and sisters-in-law, Larry and Delores Truelove of Pearland, Hoyt and Priscilla Truelove of Poland, Barry and Kim Truelove of The Colony, Alan and Cindy Truelove of Deer Park; brother-in-law and wife, Chris and Arlene Oliver of Crowley; sister-in-law and husband, Susan and Klaus Szabo of Stryker, Ohio; mother-in-law and husband, Sue and Elton Booth of Odessa, six grandchildren; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, April 30, 2003, at Cochran Funeral Home in Livingston. Reverend Fred Alford and Reverend Jerry Bennett will conduct the services. Burial will be held on Thursday, May 1, 2003, at Houston National cemetery in Houston. Herman Smith
ROSWELL, N.M. — Graveside services for Herman E. Smith, of Roswell, will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, at Sunset Memorial Gardens cemetery with the Rev. Chester O’Brian officiating. Mr. Smith died Friday, April 25, 2003 at the Farwell Convalescence Center in Farwell, Tx.
Herman was born Dec. 8, 1909, in Roxton, Tx. to James Smith and Julia Pinkle.
Herman moved to Odessa in 1951 from Arizona where he had been a foreman of a large ranch. He moved here because one of his brothers promised abundant work. And there was, he often worked 100 hour weeks delivering 1,000 gallon butane tanks to sites where oil drilling would begin. He was proud of his safe driving record. His employer, Eddins-Walcher, annually awarded him for almost 15 consecutive years. He gladly worked the long hours with dangerous combustibles to provide a good home for the love of his life, wife. He married
Kathleen Mavis Lamb in Taunton, England during World War II. He served as a surgical technician in a 500 bed general hospital in Taunton. Like most veterans the war left lifelong impressions. These shared memories influenced his oldest daughter to become a nurse. His younger daughter is a classical cellist. Both possess the work ethic he demonstrated to them.
Herman moved to Roswell with his daughter and became an active member of the Adult Center where he spent most afternoons playing dominos.
Over the past two months, his health began failing and he would spend hours talking to his daughter about heaven. He was looking forward to seeing his loved ones in heaven. He was confident his parents, wife, brother and sisters would be there to greet him. So we say bye for now. We know you will be waiting to greet us when we come home.
Survivors include: daughters, Suzanne Esparsen and her husband, Albert J. Esparsen, of Roswell, N.M., and Kathleen Patricia Hagen and her husband, Kurt Hagen, of Sunrise, Fla.; and grandsons, James and John Calley of La Merada, Calif.
Lawrence Spruill
MELISSA — Lawrence Wayne Spruill, of Melissa, Tx., passed away Friday, April 25, 2003, at the North Texas Medical Center in McKinney. He was born June 8, 1929 in Midland.
Lawrence was a former longtime resident of Odessa. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He graduated from Kermit High School in 1947 and attended the University of Texas in Austin for two years. He was a Longhorn fan. He had owned his own airplane and had traveled the world. He was former owner of a mobile home dealership and was also an insurance agent in Odessa and Melissa.
He married
Pamela Jernigan on Oct. 20, 1979 in Acapulco.
He is survived by his wife, Pamela Spruill of Melissa; sons, Larry Dale Spruill of Raleigh, N.C., Gary Mack Spruill of Flower Mound, Michael Wayne Spruill of Jacksonville, Fla., and Todd Ashley Spruill of Semmes, Ala.; brother, Bob Spruill of South Carolina; sisters, Wanda Meyers of Midland and Carol Leary of Acworth, Ga.; and five grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bill Cook officiating. Interment will follow at the Kermit cemetery in Kermit.
