Donny was born in Monahans, Texas, May 4, 1954, and was preceded in death by his parents Wayne R. Wright in 1994 and Ouida Boyd Wright in 2002, both longtime residents of Andrews.
Donny first performed in a gospel quartet at age 8, took college-level voice lessons at age 15, leading to a music major with a concentration in voice, a lifelong professional career. After graduating from Andrews High School in 1972, he moved to Nashville to become the lead singer for “Chariot”, a subsidiary group to the “Oak Ridge Boys”, touring mostly in the North Eastern states and Canada.
Upon leaving “Chariot” Donny moved to Houston, embarking on a coast-to-coast solo career before returning to West Texas studying Engineering at Odessa College and working in the oil business. An over 20-year veteran of Amoco, later Altura, Donny was a popular singer for all occasions including the lead in Midland Community Theatre’s “South Pacific” accompanied by full orchestra and “Cats in Concert” only the second performance of “Cats” off Broadway. Donny was planning a tour to promote his latest CD “In His Shoes”, a gospel collection following his “Classic” release of favorites. After receiving a liver transplant in San Antonio April 9, 2003, Donny was a model patient, quickly recovering his strength, quick wit and booming baritone voice until his sudden death in Austin, Texas.
Many, many friends are saddened by his loss. He is survived by a daughter, Summer Angel Wright of Odessa and seven step-children, all of whom he considered his own, a brother Douglas Wright of Gainesville, a sister Denise Wright Baker of Odessa, two nieces and one nephew. His passing is deeply mourned by Carol Winkel of Midland and Austin, closest to him over the last eight years and beside him throughout his triumphs and struggles. He also leaves an “adoptive family” of his late pastor M. R. “Slats” Massey of Pasadena, related by love.
Donny was proud of his affiliation with the Masons and was honored to induct his own father into the organization.

Janie Beth Smith

Pallbearers will be Brian Nicholas, James Nicholas, Marc Davis, Paul Smith, Joe Richardson and Tom “Mouse” Fraley.
She was married to Roger Dale Smith for 25 years and they had four children together. She was a wonderful Mom and Nana, not just to her own, but to all that she knew. Her love was never ending. Mom never finished high school, yet she was the wisest woman I knew. She always had time for those she loved and did not judge people without knowing their heart. There are no words that can express how much of a blessing she was in the lives she touched.
Although we can not imagine our lives without her, we know that she built before each of us a beautiful, strong foundation for which she wants us to keep building upon, with our love for one another. She was a perfect example of what a mom, a nana, a sister, an aunt or a friend should be. We can hope that we have learned from her and can continue her legacy of love. She loved anything to do with her family and homemaking including baking and sewing. She especially enjoyed sewing and sharing her quilts of love and doing anything and everything in between for her grandkids.
Mom, we want you to know that we all love you and will miss you deeply but your spirit and “attitude” will live forever in our hearts. You will always be ‘Our Hero”.
God looked around his garden and found an empty space, he then looked down upon this earth and saw your tired face. He put his arms around you and lifted you to rest. God’s garden must be beautiful; he only takes the best. He knew that you were suffering, he knew that you were in pain, He knew that you would never get well upon this earth again. He saw the roads getting rough and hills were hard to climb, so he closed your weary eyelids and whispered in your ear “peace be thine.” It broke our hearts to lose you but you did not go alone, for part of us went with you home.
