Tommy Rush
TALPA — Tommy Rush, of Talpa, Texas, noted horse breeder and trader, passed away August 4, 2003, following surgery in San Angelo Medical Center. Tommy was born December 9, 1939, in Coleman to Raymond and Frances Rush of Talpa, Texas who preceded him in death in 1997.
He is survived by two sisters, Peggy Martin and husband, Francis, of Midland, Texas and Ginger Sneed and husband, Bill, of Talpa, Texas; and a brother, Mike Rush and wife, Terry Allbright, of Odessa, Texas. He has three nieces and four nephews and several great nieces and nephews.
A service of remembrance in the cowboy style will be held on Saturday, August 9, at 2 p.m. at Lost Track Livestock Center, Talpa, Texas.
Tommy had a lifelong love of horses which he expressed in many ways. He bred and purchased horses for show, pleasure, work, rodeo and racing. He was known to many as an authority on the Foundation Quarter Horse movement and published a news magazine on the subject for several years called The Remuda. He established a successful regional horse auction in Talpa called Lost Track Livestock Center and West Texas Horse Sales. Auctions of all types, steer roping and other activities were held there regularly. He was a member of the National Foundation Quarter Horse Association (NFQHA) and American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA).
A victim of polio since the age of two, Tommy overcame many obstacles in his life and left a mark of determination and perseverance we will never forget. He did not let his challenges keep him from having a great sense of humor and being a great storyteller. He wrote excellent cowboy poetry and was the historian for the Talpa area and the ranching history there. His grandfather Albert V. Livingston was a pioneer rancher in the area and supplied Tommy with inspiration.
Tommy was loved and supported by many people in his life and his family wishes to express their profound appreciation.
Memorial gifts in memory of Tommy may be sent to the West Texas Rehabilitation Center, Abilene, Texas or to your local Rotary Club in support of their efforts to rid the world of polio forever.
