Rubilee Noble
ODESSA — Rubilee S. Noble beloved mother, grandmother and friend, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 19, 2003, after a brief illness in Austin. Certain people in this world have a way of making each of us feel special and Rubilee Smith Noble was just such a person.
This great story began on January 14, 1920. As the first of two sisters born to Oscar and Betty Smith, she grew up in the early days of the oil business. Rubilee spent the formative years of her life making friends up and down Highway 80. Wherever her father drilled a well, you will likely find people who called her their “best friend.” Attending schools throughout West Texas, she graduated from Coahoma High School in 1938. She met and then married Ray Noble in 1942.
After making another set of lifelong friends while Ray served in the Army Air Corps, they started their family and settled down in Colorado City, which they and so many others would always call home. Living in Colorado City, she began what would be her lifelong interest in the theater and in education.
When her husband Ray died in 1965, Rubilee went back to school, eventually obtaining her Masters Degree in Education. Relocating with her youngest child Betty to Odessa, she built a great life and career. Her hard work and love for “special children” pushed her forward through Ector County Independent School district to the position of supervisor of special programs where her devotion for “her kids” was legendary. For her work in education, she received the Heritage Foundation Award for Education in 1991. Her formal retirement in 1986 only began a new chapter in her love for education, first as a private tutor and then serving on the board of the Hillcrest School in Midland, she remained fully involved in education all of her life.
Her passion for the theater followed her from Colorado City to Odessa, active both as an actor and board member for The Permian Playhouse. She threw herself into such productions as “Gypsy,” “Death of a Salesman” and “Cheaper by the Dozen.” She was also active in Mansion Dinner Theater, hosting many famous and infamous celebrities who visited Odessa during the Mansion’s run. She was committed to volunteerism, helping out at the Ellen Noel Art Museum, Odessa Regional Hospital and Meals on Wheels.
A lifelong Presbyterian, she held most every office that a lay person can hold in the church. She was an elder, and Sunday school teacher, founder of the Working Woman’s Circle; she sang in the choir and served on any committee for which her help was requested. Perhaps her greatest role in life was her role as the glue that held her family together. And her greatest passion was always her family. Known as “Mami” to her nieces and nephews, “Nana” and “Grandma” to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, she was the devoted leader of the family. Always there to serve, entertain, house, clothe, feed or otherwise tend to any and all.
Her three children, eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, together with her nieces, nephews, great nieces and great-nephews, all looked to her as head of the family arid will miss her greatly. She will be missed by her children, Shana Bassinger and husband, Hubert, Reggie Noble and wife, Roe, Betty Starnes and husband, Mac; grandchildren, Jana DeLoach, Raymond Bassinger, Reagon Noble, Natalee Noble, Derek Noble, Noble Starnes, Spencer Stames and Haylee Starnes; and great-grandchildren, Seth Sanchez. Blake DeLoach, Raylee DeLoach, Brice Bassinger, Beric Bassinger, Brec Bassinger and Tripp Noble.
To honor and celebrate her life a graveside service will be held Wednesday, July 23, 2003, in Colorado City at 11:30 a.m. and a memorial service at First Presbyterian Church in Odessa at 4 p.m. with a reception following in the Fellowship Hall.

Mary Lee Swindell Strong
ODESSA — Mary Lee Strong, 73, passed away Monday, July 21, 2003, at her residence. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Frank W. Wilson Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Gary Kincaid officiating.
The mention of Mary Lee Strong’s name brings a smile to anyone lucky enough to have crossed her path. She was born June 14, 1929, in Clayton, N.M., to James Eli and Selina “Nanny” Swindell. After graduating from Hardin-Simmons University, she began her teaching career in Blackwell, Texas, and Sterling City, Texas. After teaching a year at Ector High School, Mary Lee was chosen to be a part of the Charter Faculty for the new Permian High School. She retired from teaching after 35 years of services to ECISD. She was a generous and gifted teacher who touched many lives in a special way. Mary Lee was often asked to share her gift of wit and prose for retirements, birthdays and special events at Permian.
Mary Lee’s after school hours were filled with family and community activities. Prior to moving to Odessa, she married James W. Strong in Abilene, Texas, with her brother, Rev. Jesse Swindell, administering the vows. Several years later, they were blessed with a baby girl, Melinda.
Following the death of her husband in 1980, Mary Lee found great support from her family and friends. Her ability to present captivating inspirational speeches made her in demand on the road. Retirement gave her more time to enjoy her love of people, fishing, crossword puzzles, writing, painting, music and occasional slot machine. During these years, she continued to provide an ear and heart to anyone in need.
Prior to retirement, her life’s joy’s expanded with the marriage of her daughter, Melinda, and later with the birth of her grandson, Brandon. During this time, Mary Lee had the good fortune to rekindle a relationship with Ray Smith, a gentleman from her college days. For the past 20 years, they have shared many good times as well as some hard times. During her final weeks, Ray worked tirelessly to support and comfort her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James Eli and “Nanny” Swindell, and her brothers, Hershel, James and J.E. Swindell.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Melinda and Jim Waddington of Austin; grandson, Brandon Waddington; her companion, Ray Smith; Ray’s children, Randy and Paula Smith of Dallas, Margaret Dale and Bronc May of Yanton, S.C., and Bobby and Andrea Smith of Houston; a cousin, Sue Baird of Silver City, N.M.; a niece, Terry Hardin of Athens; nephew, Rick Swindell of Lubbock and a sepcial nephew, Zack Swindell of Midland.
