She was impacted by those times in her life and was prompted to write the following poem depicting her life and it prophetically took her from her beginning to her last day on earth and into eternity.
Traveling Home
One day I started a journey.
It was at the break of dawn.
The earth beneath my feet was like soft cushions as I walked the trail along.
The morning sun was sparkling the dew upon the grass.
My heart was light and happy as through the woods I passed.
In the far distance a huge mountain I could see.
It stood so still and silent as if it were waiting for me.
I trudged along the pathway, though my feet became weary and slow,
And before I seemed to notice, it wasn’t morning anymore.
Midday had overtaken me and time was passing fast.
But the mountain stood patiently waiting.
I surely would reach it at last.
My thoughts were to go onward and upward,
Though the way became rocky and steep, then I struggled,
but stumbled for my heart had grown faint and weak.
Many years have come and swiftly past and my journey will soon be over,
then I’ll reach home at last.
- Madilene Herbert, November 1964
