Opal Pauline Cullison
KINGSLAND — Mrs. Opal Pauline Cullison, age 85, of Kingsland, Texas, passed away Monday, May 26, 2003, at a Kerrville nursing home. She was born September 25, 1917, in Mounds, Okla., to James Willie Sanders and Dewey Mathew Looney Sanders. She married Herbert R. Cullison on November 30, 1936, in Nowata, Okla.
Mrs. Cullison was a resident of Kingsland for 22 years and a prior resident of Odessa. Opal was a retired Licensed Vocational Nurse.
Survivors include three daughters, Linda Butler and Shirley Bryan, both of Odessa, and Jan Jeter of Kingsland; three sons, Stan Cullison of Kerrville, Bill Cullison of Dallas, and Herb Cullison of Teague; 16 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert R. Cullison on April 8, 1985.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, May 29, 2003, at Grimes Funeral Chapel from 2 to 4 p.m. Graveside services will be held Friday, May 30, 2003, 2 p.m. at Ector County cemetery in Odessa with Rev. Clydel Chapman of Northside Baptist Church in Odessa, officiating.

J. L. Dennis
McCULLOCH COUNTY — J. L. Dennis, age 75, of Mercury died at 12:45 p.m. Monday at his residence following a short illenss.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Cox cemetery in McCulloch County with Brian Wiggins of the Brady Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will follow under the direction of Heartland Funeral Home.
He was born October 20. 1927, in Milburn the son of the late Elgin and Elsie Dennis. He married Wanda Sue Stevens on March 26, 1955, in Odessa. He was a field operator for Mobil Oil Company in Odessa where he worked for 38 years moving to Mercury 14 years ago. He was a veteran of the Korean War serving in the U.S. Army. He was also a member of the Brady Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his wife, Wanda Sue of Mercury; two sons, James and Ben of Odessa; a brother, Jerry Dennis of Colorado; two sisters, Myrle Gerhardt of San Angelo and Joe Beasley of Abilene; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Sam Dennis.
Arrangements under the direction of Heartland Funeral Home in Early, Texas.

Carl Edward Fields
ODESSA — Carl Edward Fields, 64, formerly of Odessa, Texas, a retired businessman of New York died Thursday, May 22, 2003, at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 28, 2003, at Martinez Funeral Home with the Rev. Joe Terry officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill cemetery. Arrangements by Martinez Funeral Home. Viewing will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today.
He was born June 28, 1938, in Waco, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his father, Ervin Fields Sr., and mother, Floye Fields Waterman; brothers, Bobby Joe Fields and Victor Orlando Waterman; sons, Wayne Fields and Deron Washington.
He is survived by his wife, Dolores Fields. They were married until departed in death. He is also survived by sons, Clarence Fields and Kevin Fields, both of Odessa, and Jermaine Graham and Teddy Graham, both of Brooklyn, N.Y.; daughters, Carlynn Fields Thomas of Odessa, Sheila Graham of Charlotte, N.C., and Carolyn Bennett of Birmingham, Ala.; sisters, Ruby Faye Bryant of Houston and Ethel Brown of Corning, N.Y.; brother, Ervin Fields of Palmdale, Calif.; 14 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Cleo Cordelia Richard
ATOKA, Okla. — Cleo Cordelia (Brown) Richard, age 93, of Atoka and former longtime resident of Odessa, Texas, passed away Sunday, May 25, 2003, at her residence in Atoka. She was born September 1, 1909, in Demossville, Ky., to Henry Thomas and Julia Frances (Birch) Brown.
Cleo attended schools in Kentucky, Connecticut, Maine and Colorado. She graduated from nursing school. She worked over 40 years as a nurse in Odessa and Midland, Texas. She married Walter Paul Richard on March 24, 1933, at Yates Center, Kan. She was a member of the Faith Bible Church, Atoka, and the Yellow Rose Garden Club.
She is survived by one son, John Richard and wife, Carolyn, of Atoka; granddaughters, Sabra Mathis and husband, Ray, of Marion, Ark., and Michelle Mace of Cedar City, Utah; great-grandchildren, Shalon Griggs of Arlington, Shea Mathis and Bailey Mathis, both of Marion, Ark., Joshua Mace, Cody Mace and Logan Mace, all of Cedar City, Utah; nieces, Barbara Hill of Lubbock and Sarah Hicks and husband, Howard, of Devine, Texas; nephew, Michael Brown of Odessa; and very special friend, Loretta Peacock of Atoka; along with numerous other relatives and many dear and loved friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Paul Richard on Dec. 1, 1989; daughter, Audrey Joan Richard; parents, Henry and Julia Brown; brother, Tom Brown and sister-in-law, Marcella Brown; and sister, Ethel Dunlap and brother-in-law, Vernon Dunlap.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 28, 2003, at Faith Bible Church, formerly First Christian, in Atoka, Okla., with the Dr. Don Hazell officiating and Rev. Mark Turner assisting. Burial will follow at Green Meadows cemetery.
Pallbearers will be grandsons, Josh Mace, Cody Mace, Logan Mace and Ernie Griffin, Charles McCall, Grover Turner and Mark Turner.

Angela G. Nunez
ODESSA — Angela G. Nunez, 73, died Saturday, May 24, 2003, at Midland Memorial Hospital in Midland, Texas.
Mrs. Nunez married Victor Nunez Sr. Jan. 8, 1949, in Odessa, Texas. Mrs. Nunez was a Catholic and a member of Carmelitas, Legion of Mary and the Catholic Women Organization from Odessa.
Mrs. Nunez was born July 6, 1929, in Fort Stockton to father, Julio Nunez, and mother, Honorata Garza, who both preceded her in death.
A rosary will be said at 7 p.m. today at Martinez Funeral Home with the Carmelitas Organization. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father Gilbert Rodriguez officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill cemetery.
Survivors include her daughter, Janie N. Rodriguez and husband Jorge, of Odessa; son, Victor (Lipas) Nunez and wife Mary, of Odessa; four brothers, Ismael (Noro) Nunez, Julio Nunez, Refugio Nunez, all of Odessa, and Frank Nunez of Fort Stockton; two grandsons, Martin Nunez and wife Diane and Michael Nunez and wife Glyna, both of Odessa; one great-granddaughter, Amanda Victoria Nunez; two great-grandsons, Brian Nunez and Kieryn Nunez, both of Odessa; two honorary granddaughters, Stefanie Samarripa and Lisa Samarripa, both of Odessa; numerous nieces and nephews, godsons and goddaughters.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Mt. Carmel Heritage, P.O. Box 337, Christoval, TX, 76935-0337.

Jewell H. Smith
ODESSA — Jewell Hester Walker Smith was born in the farm home of her grandparents near Bridgeport, Texas, on December 4, 1909, to John Wesley Walker and Elsie Elizabeth (Brewer) Walker. She passed away in Lubbock, Texas on May 25, 2003.
She married Thomas Sweeten Bridges in 1927 and they had they had three sons: Howard Leon, John Thomas, and Donald Earl.
After Tom’s death in 1932, she moved to Penwell, Texas, and was commissioned Postmaster by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, a position she held for 36 years before retiring in 1969.
In 1936, Jewell married Hiram Smith; then the postmaster in the nearby town of Judkins. She and Hiram had one son, Jimmy Hiram, who now resides in Lubbock, Texas, with his wife Mary.
One story that Jewell frequently told was the highlight of her career as Postmaster. In 1939, the National Association of Postmasters held their National Convention in Washington, D.C., She was privileged to attend this convention and was a guest of First Lady Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt at a Tea Mrs. Roosevelt hosted to honor all women Postmasters who were in attendance. She donated many of her memorabilia from the Penwell post office to the Million Barrel Museum in Monahans, Texas.
After retiring, Jewell and Hiram moved to Odessa and became very active in their church, the Wesley Evangelical Methodist Church, where they were charter members. Always a highly motivated and active person, Jewell and her sister Vivian, attended Odessa College and earned their high school GEDs in 1974. Jewell subsequently took several college courses, including some in real estate. Jewell passed her real estate exam and worked as a Realtor in Odessa for almost 10 years.
Jewell is preceded in death by her mother Elsie Elizabeth Brewer Walker, father John Wesley Walker, a sister: Willie Elvira Walker Barns, four brothers: Morgan R. Walker; James V. Walker; Eddie B. Walker; and Herman H. Walker, her first husband: Thomas S. Bridges, three sons Howard Leon Bridges, John Thomas Bridges and Donald Earl Bridges, and her second husband: Hiram R. Smith.
She is survived by a sister, Vivian Evelyn Walker Shook of Odessa; son, Jimmy Hiram Smith of Lubbock; and daughters-in-Law, Irene Bridges, Betty Jean Bridges and Mary A. Smith.
She leaves many loving relatives, including ten grandchildren and spouses, Charlene Alba, Martha and Hoppy Bedell, Mike and Judie Bridges, Zona and John Armijo, Johnny and Debra Bridges, Ronny and Cindy Bridges, Scott and Jamie Bridges, Christopher and Mary Smith, Jennifer and Jeff Manley, and Karen and Robert Granfeldt.
Twenty-nine great-grandchildren and spouses, Amy and Tim Kauzlick, Lance and Marcy Van Deman, Channing Alba, Stephanie Bedell, Kimberly and Dylan Nealey, Melany Bedell, Ivan Bridges, Rana and Robert Rios, Lindsey Fitch, Ashley Fitch, Alicia and Jonathan Moore, Jeremiah Bridges, Seth Bridges, Cressie Bridges, Melody Bridges, Preston Bridges, Zachary Bridges, Roxana Bridges, Matthew Smith, Melissa Smith, Andrew Smith, Ciara Smith, Quinton Smith, Melanie Manley, Ashley Manley, Brook Manley, Grayson Granfeldt, Cameron Granfeldt, and Kalen Granfeldt.
Seven great-great-grandchildren, Kiel Kauzlick, Heather Kauzlick, Landen Van Deman, Devan Bedell, Ethan Bedell, Austin Rios, and Mason Moore.
A great many nieces and nephews and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, May 30, 2003, at Wesley Evangelical Methodist Church with Bro, Ronnie Newton officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. The family will receive visitors from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

Maggie Swaim
MIDLAND — Maggie Swaim, 82 of Midland, died on Monday, May 26, 2003, in a local hospital.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 29, 2003, with Bro. Jack Watkins, pastor of Temple Baptist Church of Odessa, officiating. Interment will be at Kermit cemetery in Kermit, Texas.
She was born on August 19, 1920, in Seymour, Texas, and married Grafton Swaim on August 13, 1937, in Washburn, Ark. He preceded her in death on February 20, 1999.
She lived in Midland for four years. She was a Pink Lady in Jal, New Mexico, for eight years. Maggie loved quilting, sewing, and crocheting. She loved to play games of any kind. She loved her family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was Church of Christ.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Patsy Swaim of Midland, Texas; one daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Max Eaves of Denver City, Texas; and one daughter-in-law, Jan Swaim.
She was preceded in death by her son, Jimmie Swaim; four brothers; three sisters; one grandson; and one great grandson.

Gail Marlene Lucas
ODESSA — Gail Marlene Lucas, 50, of Odessa passed away Wednesday, May 21, 2003, at Medical Center Hospital after a lengthy illness, she fought a hard fight.
Mrs. Lucas was born November 10, 1952, in Rockford, Ill., to her parents, Leo and Margaret Burns Lucas.
Gail spent her first 30 years in Rockford where she was a member of the Rockford Rockettes softball team. She loved many sports, football, basketball and racing. The rest of her life she spent in Odessa with many friends and family. Gail had that something, she was unique.
She was a homemaker and she liked rock ‘n’ roll music and watching television.
Her survivors include her son, Robert N. Schmidt III of Rockford, Ill.; her two daughters, Amanda Gibson and husband, Brad, of Odessa and Rachel Lucas of Odessa; and her sister, Joan Clutter of Beloit, Wisconsin.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 24, 2003, at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Bill Counts officiating.
We all loved her dearly and she will be missed.

Marcos Madrid Sr.
MORTON — Marcos Madrid Sr. died Friday, May 23, 2003, at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa at the age of 81 years. Marcos was born April 25, 1922, in Candelaria to father, Gregorio Madrid, and mother, Lola Alarcon. His parents and one grandson, Lee Roy Madrid, all precede him in death. Marcos was a veteran and a Baptist.
Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 24, 2003, at Morton Memorial cemetery in Morton, Texas.
Survivors include his wife, Marcela Madrid of Odessa; four sons, Ismael Madrid of New Braunfels, Texas, Marcos Madrid Jr. of Abilene, Texas, Frank Madrid and Jimmy Madrid, both of Odessa; four brothers, Victoriano Madrid of California, Manuel Madrid of Coolidge, Ariz., Eluterio Madrid and Gregorio Madrid, both of Odessa; five sisters, Margarita Gonzalez of Coolidge, Ariz., Lydia Telles of Canderlaria, Texas, Beatrice Cano, Maria Castillo and Angelita Aguilar, all of Odessa; 16 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
Marcos Madrid Sr. will be missed by all who knew him. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather.
