Laura Perry
ODESSA — “For He shall give His angels charge over thee, to keep thee in thy ways. They shall bear thee up in their hands.”
Psalms 91:11-12
Our beloved wife, mother and grandmother fulfilled her earthly tasks and went to be with her Lord and Savior at 5:45 p.m. on Sunday May 18, 2003.
This kind and gentle woman, whose love radiated over all who knew her, will remain forever in our hearts and memories.
Laura Jeanette Johnson was born July 15, 1912, in Tocopolo, Pontotoc County, Mississippi, the second child of the Reverend John Gary Johnson and Emma Viola Lamb Johnson. She lived her early years in the vicinity of Tomnolen and Eupora, Mississippi, where her father was pastor of Lebanon Methodist Church, founded by her great great great grandfather, Nicholas Lamb, in 1860. She became a devout Christian at an early age and remained so the rest of her life.
In 1928, at the age of 16 years, she moved to Texas with her family, living in Colorado City, Aspermont and Breckenridge. She attended school in Wayland and Breckenridge, where she was a jump center on the Buckarette basketball team. She graduated from Breckenridge High School in the spring of 1930.
On October 25, 1930, she married
John Royce Perry at the home of her parents in Breckenridge with her father performing the wedding ceremony. The couple began their life together in Wayland, living there until 1936. The dark days of the depression caused them to seek fortune in the oilfields of New Mexico and West Texas and so, in 1936, they moved their young family to Hobbs, then to Wink and Monahans, finally settling in Odessa in 1939 where they were to remain except for two years during World War II. On October 25, 2002, she, with her husband and family, celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary.
She was a long-time member of Highland United Methodist Church and the Order of The Eastern Star.
She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and today we celebrate her life and the blessings of her presence in ours. Our hearts are heavy with the sadness that comes with the loss of a loved one, but we rejoice in the knowledge that God has called her home to hear those cherished words from the Master “Your work is finished. Well done, thou good and faithful servant.”
Her parents; one brother, Dorsey Franklin Johnson; one sister, Mary Clyde Johnson; grandson Robert Edward Perry; and daughters-in-law, Virginia Perry and Wanda Perry, preceded Laura in death.
She is survived by her husband, Royce Perry; sons, Gerald and wife, LaVeta Perry, Bill Perry; daughter, Linda and husband, David Wallender; 13 grandchildren and their spouses whom she also considered to be her own, Cecelia and husband, Gary Tandy, Tine Wallender, Della Wallender, Dean Perry, Joe and wife, Charlotte Wallender, Susan and husband, Todd Allison, John and wife, Gwen Perry, Molly and husband Eddie Harris, Pat Perry, Beth and husband, Dennis Whitsell, Marcelle Walker, Michelle and husband, Eric Smith; 26 great grandchildren, Jennifer Pitt, Katie Harris, Justin Wallender, Joshua Wallender, Nikki Perry, Ben Tandy, Kandi Harris, Jalyn Wallender, Cory Haynes, Branden Smith, Jenna Wallender, Cody Allison, Felicia Anaya, Johnathon Perry, Taryn Mooney, Ashley Allison, Michael Perry, Steven Haynes, Julian Perry, Kasey Smith, Chelsea Perry, Davin Smith, Kelsey Maxwell, Kaylee Maxwell, Kaleb Walker and Luke Whitsell; two great-great-grandchildren, Evan Anaya, and Alexis Anaya; and one sister, Lou Emma Roberts of Farmington, New Mexico.
