Kenneth Ray Campbell
ODESSA — Kenneth Ray Campbell passed away on July 24, 2003, at Regency Hospital at the age of 68 years old.
He was born on June 18, 1935, in Voss, Texas, to Ira P. and Marie Cohea Campbell. He married
Robbie Skidmore on May 3, 1957, in Lubbock, Texas. He was a retired truck driver.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday July 28, 2003, at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with military graveside services with the Rev. Dewey Blevins officiating.
He is survived by wife Robbie Campbell of Odessa; sons, Kenneth “Beau” Campbell Jr. and Richard Campbell, both of Odessa; daughters, Melissa Williams and husband Bobby and Kathy Ferguson and husband Doyle, both of Odessa; and daughter-in-law, Tamara Campbell of Odessa. He is also survived by grandsons, Jacob Williams and wife Jeannie of Odessa and Danny Burris of Amarillo, Texas, Joshua Williams, Kenneth III, Ira and Blake Campbell; granddaughters, Miranda Gariepy and husband Jackie, Raeha Whitaker, Sarah Whitaker and Marina Williams; granddaughter-in-law Charlotte Burris; great-grandchildren, Jody and Blyane Williams, Kaylea and Devon Burris and Zachary Gariepy; sister, Jerri Kugle of Georgetown, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Fred and Lowel Campbell; sister, Peggy Blevins; and great-grandson, Noah Gariepy.
We were all greatly loved by him, and we all loved him and always will. Services are entrusted to Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.
Afton Hagar Davis
ODESSA — Afton Hagar Davis died Friday, July 25, 2003. She was 88 years old.
She leaves behind her husband, L.C. “Red” Davis of Odessa. They were married
Jan. 21, 1944, in Abilene, Texas. They moved to Odessa in 1948.
Afton was first and foremost a wife and mother. She spent a short period of her life working as a hairdresser. Her hobbies included cooking for her family, oil painting, sewing and playing weekly card games with her brothers and sisters and their families.
She is survived by her loving husband, L.C. Davis; L.C. Davis Jr. and wife Helen of Odessa; Joann Clifton and husband Tommy of Robert Lee, Texas; Mary Jo Domier and husband Joe of Georgetown, Calif.; Roy Davis of Merkel, Texas; Ray Davis and wife Kay of Abilene, Texas; Bill Davis and wife Janis; Shirley Qualls and husband Hershell; and Debbie West, all of Odessa; 24 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Family visitation will take place at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, July 28, 2003. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 29, 2003, at Sunset Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Paul Veree officiating.

Chester L. Evinger
ODESSA — Chester L. Evinger, 80, of Midland, passed away Thursday, July 24, 2003.
He was born to John Daniels Evinger and Pearl Kirstene Hendrickson Evinger on July 21, 1923, in Kay County, Okla.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II as a rear tail gunner, and in the Korean War he served as a hydraulic mechanic. He received an Honorable Discharge at the rank of Technical Sergeant.
Chester moved with his family to Midland from Fort Sill, Okla., in 1951 and was a longtime business owner of West Wall Amoco and C L Evinger and Son, located at 2411 W. Wall St.
He is survived by daughters, Robbie G. Johnson of Denton, Cheryl K. Reagan and husband Coy and Anna D. Dove and husband Tommy, both of Odessa, and brother, Al “Jim” Evinger of Corona, Calif. He has 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, as well as two great-great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made in lieu of flowers to the Odessa Christian Faith Center Youth Building Fund.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Chapa Funeral Home, located at 1050 S. Dixie Blvd. in Odessa.
Wendell Neal ‘Hook’ Hanson
ODESSA — Wendell Neal “Hook” Hanson of Odessa died Saturday, July 26, 2003, at Hospice House in Odessa. He was 76.
Hook was born in Mason City, Iowa, on March 24, 1927, to Lester and Elizabeth Hanson. He met Phyllis Ann Nehls and they were married
on March 25, 1951. After many years of traveling with Dresser Engineering, the family moved to Odessa in 1967, where Hook was promoted to Regional Manager. He held this position until his retirement in 1986. Hook loved fishing, cooking, crossword puzzles, listening to Big Band Music, attending sporting events for his grandchildren and walking in the park with his dogs.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis; brother, David Hanson of Clear Lake, Iowa; and parents, Lester and Elizabeth Hanson of Ventura, Iowa.
Hook is survived by four sisters and one brother, Betty Blick of Seattle, Wash., Bonnie Hanson of Clarksville, Ga., Jo Ellen Carpenter of Clearlake, Iowa, Joyce Stille of Swaledale, Iowa and Larry Hanson of Utah.
He is also survived by his children, Jane Cox and husband Gary of San Angelo, Lee Hanson and Mike Hanson, and Barbara Parnell and husband Tony, all of Odessa; granddaughters, Pam Klausner and husband Troy and Wendy Wright and husband Jason, all of San Angelo, Robbi Hasty and husband Eric of Grape Creek and Lindsey Parnell, all of Odessa; grandsons, Ryan and Seth Parnell of Odessa; 10 great-grandchildren, Kendra, Sebastien, Collin, Ashley, Hunter, Kyle, Cade, Titus, Kurt and Paeton.
Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. today at Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors.
Memorial services will be scheduled for another time.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Hook’s longtime friend and caregiver, Marilyn Rael.
In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to Hospice House of Odessa.
Rice H. Harrington
SAN MARCOS — Rice H. Harrington, 50, of San Marcos, Texas, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, July 22, 2003. He was born November 14, 1952, in Midland, Texas, to R. W. “Whitey” and Edith (Collings) Harrington.
An art teacher at San Marcos High School since 1981, Rice was very popular with his students. He was always willing to help others and was very well liked and respected by both the students and faculty. He was an artist who enjoyed pottery and painting, gardening and fishing. He also enjoyed playing guitar with friends. A good friend to all, he will be remembered for his great sense of humor and as someone who touched the lives of thousands of students and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Cathy of San Marcos; parents, R.W. “Whitey” and Edith Harrington of Odessa; sister, Sara Moak and husband, Barry of Abilene; niece and nephew, Corrie and Evan Moak; uncle, Jim Harrington of Sonora; aunts, Martha Eggleston of Devine and Pat Taylor of Weatherford; and cousins, Phyllis Garcia of Devine, Cheryl Cashion of Dallas and Richard Taylor of Weatherford.
Memorial Services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Y.P. Yarbrough Fine Arts Center at the San Marcos High School, with Mr. Fred Pratt officiating.

Elena Flores Hill
ODESSA — Elena Flores Hill, 85, a housewife, went to be with the Lord on Friday, July 25, 2003, at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa, Texas.
Mrs. Hill lived in Odessa, Texas, since the early 1940s and was previously from Del Rio, Texas.
She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Rumaldo; sons, Rey Hill, Willie Hill Sr., Pastor Rosario Hill and Rumaldo Hill Jr., all of Odessa; daughters, Mary Ann Ortega and Lidia Cruz, both of Odessa; and sisters, Isabel Silvas of San Jose, Calif., and Maria Felis Sosa of Odessa.
She was preceded in death by her father, Abuentura Flores and her mother, Juanita Garza Flores.
She was born Aug. 18, 1917, in Cameron, Texas.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father Gilberto Rodriguez officiating. A rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Monday at Martinez Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in the Ector County cemetery Rose Hill Section.
Pallbearers will be Willie Hill Jr., Reynaldo Hill Jr., Danny Cruz, Frank Hill, Rosario Hill Jr. and Richard Hill.
Our beloved wife, mother and grandmother has gone to be with our Lord. She was our joy, strength and honor. She will forever remain in our hearts.

Daniel Marvin Little
ODESSA — Daniel Marvin Little went to join his heavenly family July 26, 2003. He had endured many years of illness and always fought a brave battle.
He was born Nov. 26, 1924, to W. L. Little and Vida Mae Tisdale in Runnels County, Texas. He married
Bertha Bell Kilgore Jan. 25, 1948, in Abilene, Texas, and preceded him in death Aug. 17, 2002.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Edith and Leola; three brothers, Ward, Carlos and Joel Butlers.
He is survived by his daughter, Mary McCrury and husband Darnell; one brother, Willis Little of Abilene; one sister, Jewell Courtney of San Antonio; grandchildren, Michael McCrury and wife Margie, Shauna McConnell and husband Ed; a great-grandson, Zachary McCrury; and numerous nephews and nieces.
Dan worked for Cummings Sales and service for 32 years and retired as district sales manager. He was a veteran of World War II and had served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Petrof Bay. In 1944, he was in Anguar and Peliliu Islands, Leyte P.L. operations and Second Battle of the Philippines of Leyte and Samar islands. In 1945, he served lingayen Gulf and San Narciso operation to Luzon island, P.I. Iwo Jima operation and Okinawa operations. Dan was awarded the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with two stars, Pacific Theater Ribbon with five bronze stars and a Presidential Unit Citation Ribbon.
He enjoyed his family, working with his pecan trees and his pet “Ducky.” Dan was a member of Temple Baptist Church and loved the Harvester Sunday School Class. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday July 29, 2003, at Temple Baptist Church Harvester Classroom with the Rev. Johnny Thompson officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Lamesa Memorial Park under the direction of Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
Leona Louise Maxwell Nichols
ODESSA —Leona Louise Maxwell Nichols, born Oct. 10, 1935, in Coleman County, Texas, was the second child and second daughter of Curtis Clinton Maxwell and the former Mildred Louise Boyd.
The family briefly lived near Corpus Christi, Texas, before returning to Coleman County and soon moved to Odessa in 1941. Leona graduated Odessa High School in 1954 and entered Odessa College before transferring to West Texas A&M University in Canyon, where she received her B.S. degree in Elementary Education in 1957. Her graduating class was the last to receive the lifetime teaching certificate. Her ambition on graduating OHS was “to be the best first-grade teacher ever.”
She taught at Lamar Elementary in Odessa for two years before teaching a year at Govalle Elementary in Austin. She next taught at South Davis Elementary in Arlington, Texas. She relocated to Odessa and taught at Gonzales Elementary, then transferred to Hays Elementary, where she completed her 37-year teaching career. During a one-year leave of absence, she taught an international kindergarten class in Bethioua, Wilaya d’Oran, Algeria. Officially, Leona retired in 1994, but she never retired from teaching.
On Sept. 25, 1959, Leona married
James Waylon “Nick” Nichols in the University Presbyterian Church in Austin, Texas, with Dr. Wilson Logan officiating. Together, they traveled extensively, often on a whim. She was the last active charter member of the Gamma Tau chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa. Additionally, she was a lifetime member of the PTA at Hays Magnet School and was a member of the Texas Retired Teachers’ Association. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and was a tireless volunteer for the Odessa office of the Alzheimer’s Association in memory of her mother-in-law, Medie Lundy Nichols.
Leona was pre-deceased by her father and two nephews.
She is survived by her widower, James Waylon “Nick” Nichols; sons, David Eugene Nichols and wife Allene of Arlington and Ramon Andrew Nichols of Euless; her adored grandson and the apple of her eye, Maxwell Clark Nichols of Arlington; her cherished mother, Mildred Boyd Maxwell of Odessa; two sisters, Juanell Coats and husband Tim of Proctor and Norma Joyce Dyer and husband Louis Kelly of Odessa; and one brother, Glenn Edward Maxwell of Odessa. Additionally, she is survived by nieces, Laura Satterfield and husband Craig of Euless, Kathy Kelton and husband Sam of Midland and Jennifer James and husband Gerald of Rotan; nephews, Curtis Todd Dyer and wife Shandra of Puyallup, Wash. and Clint Antonio Maxwell of Pasadena; as well as various grand-nieces and grand-nephews. She also is survived by a sister-in-law, LaNell Nichols Daniel and husband James of Powder Springs, Ga.; two aunts, Clarine Boyd Davis of Pampa and Louella Pierce of Valera; and three uncles, Raymond Boyd of Plano, H.M. Boyd of Buchanan Lake and Clarence Maxwell of Gardendale; as well as a host of cousins. And, finally, one is blessed to have one good friend during a lifetime, and Leona had that friend for a lifetime, Rita Stewart.
She died at 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 23, 2003, in Hospice House in Odessa.
Graveside services, under the direction of Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home, will follow cremation at 10 a.m. in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Odessa, officiated by the Rev. Steve Deines of First Presbyterian Church.
It was her request that donations be made in her name to the scholarship fund of Alpha Delta Kappa, 3006 Laurel Ave., Odessa, TX 79762; or the Star Chapter of the American Alzheimer’s Association, 4400 N.
