Irene Moreno Dominguez
ODESSA — Irene Moreno Dominguez, 81, died Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2003, at Medical Center Hospital.
Irene was born Oct. 20, 1920, in Nuevo Leon, Mexico, to father, Juan Moreno, and mother, Modesta Moreno, who both precede her in death. She is also preceded in death by her husband Crespin Dominguez Sr. and Richard Dominguez. Irene married Crespin Dominguez March 18, 1942, in San Antonio, Texas.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19, 2003, at Iglesia Del Nazareno with Pastor Raymond Martinez officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill cemetery.
Survivors include her four daughters, Ester Rodriguez and husband, Apolonio, of Odessa, Bertha Ramos and husband, Abiud, of Odessa, Delma Avila and husband, Ricky, of Odessa and Lydia Pearce and husband, Jack, of Odessa; two sons, Hilario Dominguez of Midland and Crespin Dominguez Jr. and wife, Donna, of Odessa; one brother, Enrique Moreno of Bigfoot, Texas; 15 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
Services are under the direction of Martinez Funeral Home.

Christine George
GRANBURY — Christine George, 83, died Thursday, Sept. 18, 2003, in Granbury.
Funeral: 4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 22, 2003, at Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Acton, Texas.
Graveside service: 2 p.m. Tuesday at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Odessa, Texas.
Visitation: 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Wiley Funeral Home in Granbury.
Memorials: Good Shepherd Episcopal Church.
Mrs. George was born Aug. 16, 1920, in Fort Worth, to V.T. and Lilly Dopkins Kennemer. She married Pete George, February 16, 1946, in Weatherford, Texas.
Survivors: Daughter, Patty Caddell and husband, Len, of Granbury; grandchildren, Elisa Nihill and Christopher Caddell, both of San Antonio; great-grandchildren, Andrew, Avery and Benjamin Nihill; sister, Jean Levey of Arlington; and brother, Bob Kennemer of Burleson.
Services entrusted to Wiley Funeral Home of Granbury, (817) 573-3000.

Alberta Long Alexander
HALTOM CITY — Alberta Long Alexander, 75, of Denton passed away Saturday, Sept. 13, 2003, at the Baylor Medical Center of Irving. She was born Jan. 23, 1928, in Brentwood, Calif., to Albert and Matilda Marie (Frieberg) Rinke. She married Ruben “R.J.” Long Nov. 9, 1950, in Stanton, Texas. After his death, she remarried to David Leon Alexander on Feb. 24, 1996, in Seminole, Texas.
A member of the First Baptist Church of Haltom City, Mrs. Alexander was the owner/operator of the Long Fruit Market & Statuary in Odessa, Texas.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2003, in the First Baptist Church of Haltom City with the Revs. M.M. Mosley and Marlin Mosley officiating. Burial will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, 2003, at the Oakwood cemetery of Comanche, Texas. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2003, at the Schmitz Floyd Andersen Funeral Home in Denton.
Survivors include two daughters, Franciene Long of Midland and Velinda Rene Box of Denton; sons, Micheal Paul Long of Keller and Jeffrey Lynn Long of Olden; a sister, Jean Marie Long of Minden, Nev.; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Virginia Black
BIG LAKE — Virginia P. Black, 86, of Big Lake, died suddenly Saturday, Sept. 13, 2003, in San Angelo.
Virginia was born April 9, 1917, in Roby, Texas, to Kate Bently and Ernest Parker. She was married to Jack W. Black, who preceded her in death earlier this summer. Also preceding her in death were her parents, a brother, Jack Parker, and a sister, Melba Martin of Roby.
She attended Tarleton State University and obtained her degree from Sul Ross State University. Virginia was an educator in Iraan and Big Lake for many years. She was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Big Lake Garden Club, Eastern Star and Trailblazers.
Virginia was a devoted wife and mother. Survivors include son, Ken Black and wife, Katha, of Dallas; daughter, Carol Sue Staskus and husband, Al, of Austin; grandchildren, Brett McAnally and wife, Chrissy, of Austin, Suzanne Anderson and husband, Russell, of Plano and Kacy Black of Nacogdoches. Five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and sister-in-law, Geraldine Parker of Snyder, also survive her.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16 at First United Methodist Church in Big Lake with the Rev. Tim Fahrenhold and the Rev. J. B. Bitner officiating the service. Interment will be at 4 p.m. in Roby cemetery in Roby, Texas.
Pallbearers for the service will be nephews, Jerry Jack Parker, Jerry Floyd, Bob Stout, Charlie Jackson, Henry Settle, and grandson, Brett McAnally.
Services entrusted to Johnson’s Funeral Home of San Angelo.

Florine Hattie Hensley
ODESSA — Florine Hattie Hensley, beloved wife and mother, died at home surrounded by her family and left this life to live with Jesus on Sunday, Sept. 14, 2003. She was born on October 18, 1910, in Bethel, Texas, the daughter of John Hamilton and Mae Elizabeth Hayes.
She graduated from Rankin High School in 1929, and was married on May 18, 1929, to Walter Winfield Hensley, who preceded her in death on November 30, 1972. She moved with her husband to Iraan, Texas, upon the discovery of the Yates Oil Field where she and her husband resided until 1972. She taught piano and helped her husband run the Texas Theater which they owned while they resided in Iraan. She was active in the Mildred Parker Garden Club and played the piano for the First Christian Church in which she was a member while they resided in Iraan.
Upon retirement she became a real estate agent and worked in Kingsland, Texas, before moving to Odessa in 1975, where she was active as a member of the Swinging Rhythmettes Band and the Antioch Christian Church.
She was preceded in death by her mother, father and husband. She is survived by one daughter, Jo Anna Pope of Marble Falls; one son, Malcolm K. Hensley of Odessa; three sisters, Dorothy Lowe of Sterling City, Mary Wunderl of San Angelo and Pat Franklin of Odessa; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at Antioch Christian Church at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2003, with Don Fankhauser officiating. Burial will be on Thursday, Sept. 18, at 10 a.m. at Lakeland Hills Memorial Park near Kingsland, Texas. Family visitation will be on Tuesday September 16, 2003, from 5 to 6:30 p.m.
Services are entrusted to Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.

Dora Wall Payne
ODESSA — Dora Barbara Wall Payne, 94, former long-time Odessa resident, passed away Sunday, Sept. 14, 2003, at the Younger Center of Manor Park in Midland. She was born February 15, 1909, to Lewis Cass Wall and Barbara Waddell Wall, pioneer Midland residents.
Dora moved to Odessa in 1955 from Carlsbad, N.M. She and her husband, Bernie E. Payne, owned and operated a hardware store and were later associated with the wholesale lumber industry. Bernie preceded her in death in 1973.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Odessa and the P.E.O. of Odessa. Dora was initiated in the P.E.O. Sisterhood in Chapter A, Carlsbad N.M., in 1949. Dora affiliated with Chapter BT in Odessa in 1955. She regularly enjoyed her association with the Fellowship Sunday School Class in her church. She attended Business College in Fort Worth and for many years was a secretary at Pritchard & Abbott.
Graveside services will be held at Fairview cemetery in Midland at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2003. A memorial service will follow at 3 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, Odessa, with the Rev. Steve Deines and the Rev. Nora Fitch officiating.
Two nieces, Barbara Johnston of Waco and Genora “Tiny” Watson and husband, Ken, of Port Neches; and a nephew, Yates E. Brown and wife, Jane’t, of Fort Worth, survive Dora as well as numerous cousins and friends.
Memorials, if desired, may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Odessa or your favorite charity.
Arrangements are under the direction of Hubbard Kelly Funeral Home in Odessa.

Ruben ‘Kasper’ Pier
ODESSA — Ruben “Kasper” Pier, 16, of Odessa, passed away Saturday, Sept. 13, 2003, at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2003, at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jimmy Braswell officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Ruben was born December 5, 1986, the son of Jaime and Susana Pier. He was in the 11th grade at Odessa High School and had lived in Odessa all his life. He was a good son, brother, uncle and friend. He loved playing his bass guitar and died doing what he loved best — skateboarding. Ruben was caring, compassionate, and loving. He always had the best intentions, and never wished any harm on anyone, no matter who they were. He truly touched the lives of those who were close to him. Although he will be greatly missed, Ruben will live in our hearts always.
He is survived by his parents, Jaime and Susana Pier of Odessa; two sisters, Christina Pier of Odessa, and Marisa Pier of Austin, Texas; paternal grandparents, Fernando Pier of El Paso, and Maria Morrison of Mexico; maternal grandparents, Romulo and Ana Maria Bernal of El Paso; and a niece, Eliza Abila.

Ruth Burroughs
TYLER — Ruth Burroughs, 90, of Tyler passed away Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2003. She was born April 1, 1913, in Center, Texas.
Ruth lived in Tyler for 25 years. She was a homemaker and a member of Marvin United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William “Dub” Burroughs Jr., and brother, James Turner. She is survived by her brother, Harold Turner and wife, Billie Sue, of Longview; brother-in-law, M.M. Joe Burroughs and wife, Dixie, of McLean; niece, Dixie Jo Crockett of McLean; nephew, Joe Bob Burroughs of Odessa; goddaughter, Myrna Lynn Rainer of Dallas; and numerous other nieces, nephews and friends.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Lloyd James Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 26, 2003, at Lloyd James Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Rick Hume and the Rev. Dr. Michael D. Dent officiating. Burial will follow at Gladewater Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Derek Burroughs, Billy Bybee, Jay Burnett, Brock Crockett, Mark Rainer and Phil Bielamowicz.
Services entrusted to Lloyd James Funeral Home.

Estell Edna Johnson
ODESSA — Estell Edna Johnson passed away Saturday, Sept. 20, 2003. She was born Nov. 4, 1919, to John C. and Hila Slaughter in Terrell, Texas. The family moved to Kermit when Estell was very young. Estell moved to Odessa in 1936, married Francis Lee Johnson on October 9, 1948, and was a member of Faith Community Church.
Estell was a beautician and began working at an early age and worked for 60 years. She owned and operated Lee and Estell’s Beauty Shop in West Odessa. She loved to dance and to fish.
Estell was preceded in death by her parents, John and Hila Slaughter; her husband, Lee Johnson; and 10 brothers, James, Ora, John, Dick, Albert, Herman, Frank, Silas, Stant and J.D. Slaughter.
She is survived by her four children, Otha C. Slayton and wife, Jean; Shirley Jo Kelley and husband, John; Guylan L. Johnson and wife, Pat, all of Odessa, and Maynard D. Johnson and wife, Tanya, of Pearland, Texas; 10 grandchildren, Donna Nelson, Gaylene Benevidez and husband, Frankie, of Odessa, Paula Wier and husband, Lynn, of Palestine, John Acton and wife, Michelle, of Midland, Heather Thomas and husband, Larry, of Longview, Dena Walter of Dallas, Jamie Johnson and wife, Dustie, of Midland, Greg Johnson, Kimberly Johnson and Brooks Johnson of Pearland; 12 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Patsy Batchelor of Odessa.
Services were held at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home Chapel on Monday, Sept. 22, 2003, with Dr. Griffin Jones of Temple Baptist Church officiating.
Pallbearers were John Acton, Jamie Johnson, Greg Johnson, Denn Whalen, Carey Whalen and Frankie Benevidez. Honorary pallbearer was Ron Slaughter.
Services were entrusted to Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.

Frank Lara
ODESSA — Frank L. Lara, 51, died Sunday, Sept. 21, 2003, at his residence in Odessa.
Mr. Lara was born May 15, 1952, in Balmorhea to father, David Lara, and mother, Elvira Leyva, both of whom preceded him in death.
Rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, 2003, at Martinez Funeral Home. Mass will be celebrated Friday, Sept. 26, 2003, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with Father Gilbert Rodriguez officiating. Burial will follow at Rosehill cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Maria G. Lara of Odessa; four sons, Edward Lara, David Lara, Jacob Lara and Benjamin Lara, all four of Odessa; three stepsons, Jose Rodriguez of Odessa, Reggie Rodriguez of Portland, Ore., and Ricky Rodriguez of Gonzales, La; one daughter, Vanesa Lara of Odessa; two stepdaughters, Olga Gonzales of Odessa and Leticia Fierro of Gonzales, La.; three sisters, Josefina L. Maldonado of Odessa, Manda Tarango of Morton and Jessusita Granado of Fort Davis; three brothers, Ruben Lara, Carlos Lara and Jimmy Lara, all of Odessa; 22 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral Services are under the direction of Martinez Funeral Home.
