Nathan Mabry
SAN ANTONIO — Our loving husband and father, Nathan Mabry, passed away in San Antonio, Texas, at the age of 84. He was born to parents A.D. and Betty Mabry on February 8, 1919. He received a Purple Heart in WWII and was in the European Theater, Company C, 309th Infantry Regiment, 78th Infantry Division.
Nathan enjoyed yard work, woodworking and his computer. He was preceded in death by his parents, A.D. and Betty Mabry; and brother, Norris Mabry. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Betty; daughters, Natalie Lewis and husband, Jerry, Monica King and husband, Kade; son, Monte Mabry and wife, Dale; grandchildren, Cassandra Donavan, Chris Lewis, Monte Mabry; great-grandchildren, Paris and Nicholas; brothers, Dwaine and Don; sisters, Betty Jean and Delores; numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Ft. Sam Houston National cemetery with military honors. The Rev. Joe Walts will officiate.

Joyce Dickie Wilhelm
On Friday, Aug. 22, 2003, Joyce Dickie Wilhelm peacefully moved out of this world. She had struggled with cancer and was ready to leave us.
Joyce was born on Oct. 11, 1921, to Joe Barry and Nora Dickie. She married
Grady Wilhelm in 1945.
A talented artist, Joyce used her skills as a beautician for 60 years, then after retirement, turned to oil painting. The beauty she created will be remembered by her family and friends who received both paintings and china.
Joyce was a family-oriented individual who devoted much of her time to her children; Judy Clements and husband Ray, Pamela Davis and Connie Graham of Odessa and Steve Wilhelm and wife Jo of Temple; her grandchildren, Boyd Clements of Lubbock, Scott Clements and wife Alma of Odessa, Shelly Wilhelm of San Marcos, Christie Lovelace and husband Joe of California, and Brett Giddens of Odessa; and her great-grandchildren, David, Matthew, and Arianna Clements, and Haley and Ashlyn Lovelace, her sisters, Mildred Gray of Midland, and Nell Hadden of Killeen.
During the last years of her life, Joyce was basically homebound, but she delighted in the many visits she shared with her family.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, Joe Barry and Nora Dickie; her husband; three brothers, J.B., Emmett, and Otis; and four sisters, Eunice Anderson, Lela Baize, Edith Harmon, and Lenora Hord.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 25, 2003, at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Curtis Brewer officiating. Family visitation will follow at the home.

Mary Ann Dutchover
ALPINE — Mary Ann Dutchover, 56, loving wife, mother, and grandmother departed this life on August 19, following a 12-year battle with breast cancer.
She was born in Alpine, Texas, on January 4, 1947. She is survived and will always be cherished by her loving husband of 32 years, Ruben Dutchover of Las Vegas; her daughter, Deborah Schoewe stationed at Osan Air Base, Republic of Korea; her son, Eddie Dutchover of Las Vegas, Nevada; her brother, Leocaurdio Portillo of Alpine, Texas; her sisters, Eva Portillo of Midland, Texas, and Angie Portillo of Odessa, Texas; and by her four grandchildren, Alyssa, Lindsey, and Stephen Schoewe and baby Dutchover.
She has lived in Las Vegas for 24 years. She retired as a Civil Service employee at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada where she worked as a Recreation Specialist, and as the Assistant Director of the Arts and Crafts Center. She was also a member of the Nevada State Ceramic Association.
She was an advocate for the American Cancer Society and the Susan G. Komen Foundation where she touched many lives through support groups and charity events. She was a facilitator for the “I Can Cope” educational program for cancer patients and families based at Nellis AFB. She volunteered countless hours at the ISIGHT Center for the Blind.
As a result of her invaluable contributions in the community, she was recognized by the Nevada Attorney General, Frankie Sue DePappa as Nevada Woman of the Year.
A Rosary prayer vigil will be held at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Alpine, Texas. The Funeral Service Mass will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church on Saturday at 10 a.m. in Fort Davis, Texas. Burial will immediately follow at St. Joseph cemetery in Fort Davis, Texas.
Ralph E. Griffith
WILLS POINT — Funeral services for Ralph E. Griffith, 72, of Wills Point, are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church in Edgewood with Dr. David Tomme and Revs. Scott Brown and Jim Ballard officiating. Interment will be in the White Rose cemetery in Wills Point under the direction of Hiett’s LyBrand Funeral Home. Mr. Griffith died Tuesday, August 19, in Wills Point of Alzheimer’s disease.
Ralph was born August 3, 1931, in Okmulgee, Okla., son of the late T. V. and Willie Chilton Griffith. He graduated from Capitol Hill High School in Oklahoma City in 1949 where he lettered in football, basketball and was the manager of the baseball team. At the age of 13 he began working on the trucking dock for J. H. Rose Truck Lines in Oklahoma City. He was well liked and a hard worker and by the age of 16 he was driving trucks between Texas and Oklahoma.
Ralph served in the 45th Infantry Division of the United States Army in the Korean War where he was a surgical medic under the command of General MacArthur. He married
Valta Canning on June 2, 1953, in Oklahoma City, Okla. They moved to Los Angeles, Calif., where he worked for J. H. Rose Truck Lines as the dock foreman. After nine years with them, he moved to Dallas in 1962 and began working for C & H Transportation as a salesman. He was named assistant sales manager two years later. In 1968, he became Vice President of Operations and then Senior Vice President before moving to Anchorage, Alaska, in 1973. As President of Mukluk Freight Lines and Northwestern Trucking Company he was instrumental in the building and completion of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline. He returned to Dallas and C & H Transportation in 1975 as Senior Vice President until he retired in 1986. At that time he began his own trucking company, GEM Transportation in Longview, Texas for 15 years. He was a member and Vice President of Texas Motor Transportation Association and a member of American Trucking Association.
In 1967 Ralph was ordained as a deacon at the First Baptist Church of Dallas and served there seven years in numerous capacities and responsibilities. It was his love of our Lord Jesus Christ and his passion for helping others that led him to become involved with the youth ministries at every church where he was a member. At the time of his death he was a member of the First Baptist Church of Edgewood where he served on the deacon body as well as being trustee for many years.
In 1982 he moved to Wills Point where he very much enjoyed the ranch life. One of his greatest joys was to load his grandchildren into his pickup and drive them around the farm to see his cows.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Valta Canning Griffith of Wills Point; two sons, R. Gordon Griffith and wife, Kristen, of Garland and Craig E. Griffith and wife, Davelyn, of Midland; daughter, Marvella Griffith McElya and husband, Martin, of Dallas; seven grandchildren, Brittany and Ryan Griffith of Garland, Whitney and Andrea Griffith of Midland and Alyssa, Addison and Alexander McElya of Dallas; two sisters, Helen Martin of Oklahoma City and LaVaughn Suttles of Okmulgee, Okla. He was also preceded in death by one brother and seven sisters.
Family will receive friends at the funeral home in Wills Point Friday evening from 5 to 8 p.m.

Toll Smith Jr.
ODESSA — Toll Smith Jr., 79, of Odessa passed away Wednesday, August 20, 2003, at his residence. Mr. Smith was born November 13, 1923, in Ryan, Okla., to Toll Smith and Myrtle Newborn.
Mr. Smith married
Nell Coats December 26, 1947, in Bowie, Texas. They moved to Odessa in 1957. Toll retired as a welder. After his retirement, Mr. Smith loved selling and delivering firewood to many friends in Odessa.
Services have been scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, August 22, 2003, at the Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors Chapel with the Rev. Jimmy Braswell officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Survivors include his wife, Nell Smith of Odessa; son, Kelton Smith and wife, Janis, of Odessa; daughter, Sharon Case and husband, Bobby, of Odessa; four grandchildren, Stoney Case, Stormy Case and wife, Lacey, Tate Smith and Skyler Smith; and one great-grandchild, Cooper Case.

Mary Jean Elliott
ODESSA — Mary Jean Elliott, affectionately known as Jeannie to family and friends, went to be with her Lord Monday, Aug. 18, 2003, at Hospice House. She was born Dec. 29, 1920, in Portland, Maine, to Angelo and Mary Morelli.
Graveside services will held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, 2003, at Hanson cemetery in Dublin, Texas.
Jeannie was a homemaker and loved country western music. She aspired to be a country western star. She loved horses and would rent them and ride in parades. She loved her family and was especially close to her daughter, Sandy.
She is preceded in death by husband, Garland E. Elliott; daughter, Janice Louise Elliott; one sister; two brothers; and her parents.
She is survived by her daughter, Sandy Warren and husband, Jimmy, of Odessa; brothers, Alfred Morelli and wife, Wanda, of Detroit, Mich., Joe Morelli of New York, Louie Morelli and wife, Pat, of Bangor, Maine, Angelo Morelli Jr. of Portland, Maine, and Jerry Morelli and wife, Nancy, of S. Portland, Maine; sister-in-law, Annie Mae Elliott of Odessa; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, George and Leslie Elliott of Stephenville; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jimmy and Helen Elliott of Proctor; grandchildren, Mike and Melissa Warren; great-grandchildren, Courtney and Stephanie; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express thanks to the staff of Deerings Nursing Home for the care provided to Jeannie.

Daniel Porras
ODESSA — Daniel Porras, 17, passed away Tuesday, August 12, 2003, following an automobile accident. He was born on March 16, 1986, in Midland, Texas, Oscar Porras and Marya de la lus. Daniel was employed in construction, was member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and attended Ector Jr. High School.
He is survived by his son, Danny Porras Jr.; brothers, Cristobal Juan Porras, Oscar Porras Jr. and Jimmy Porras; sisters, Michl Gavaldon and Mayra Gavaldon; and grandmother, Dionicia de Porras.
A rosary was recited August 14, 2003, at Odessa Funeral Home Chapel. Mass was celebrated at 2 p.m. Friday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Gilbert Rodriguez officiating. Burial was at Rose Hill cemetery.
Pallbearers were Israel Tercero, Eloy Rodriguez, Sergio Quinonez, Luis Luna, Jesus Rodriguez and Joel Quiroz.
Joseph Rhatie Singh
MIDLAND — Joseph Rhatie Singh passed away on Sunday, August 17, 2003, in Midland, Texas.
He was born to Mr. and Mrs. Chatterpaul Singh on February 25, 1924, at No. 47 Village, Corentyne, Berbice, Guyana. Rhatie married
Kamla Jessodra Ramgulam, deceased 1980, in 1951 and together raised their five daughters, Nina Rookmin Singh of New York, Khay Singh-Phillips of Santa Clara, Calif., Violet Singh of Midland, Texas, Beatrice Indira Singh of New York and Tiny Nadira Kanhai of Toronto, Canada. He was the loving grandfather of Melissa and Susan Singh of Midland, Sarah, Rebekah, Rachel, Leah and Hannah Phillips, all of Santa Clara, Calif., Kevin and Victoria Kanhai of Toronto.
Prior to his short stay in Midland, he lived in Far Rockway, New York, after emigrating from Guyana in 1984. His teaching career spanned thirty-five years, first briefly as a classroom teacher and then as a Principal at the elementary level at Albion School, No 48 Gov’t School, No. 43 Gov’t School, No. 59 Gov’t School, Kawall Gov’t School and Providence School in Guyana. He particularly was proud of his role in coordinating the community labor, land donation and foreign aid that brought access to an elementary school built by residents of No. 43 Village. In 1967, he was one of two principals in the country selected to participate in one-year study at the Latin American Education Institute in Venezuela.
His hobbies included beekeeping, gardening and woodwork. He also operated a successful land excavating business, was a co-founder of the Lotus Valley Cooperative Rice Development Scheme, a member of the Upper Corentyne Lions Club and the West Demerara Lions Club. He was a member and elder of the No. 48 Presbyterian Church and Burns Memorial Presbyterian Church in Guyana. Rhatie enjoyed excellent health in all of his life except the last six months and was blessed with the love and deep respect of many, especially his brothers, sisters, brothers-in-laws, sisters-in-laws, nieces, nephews, former students and numerous friends. His bright smile, firm handshake, pleasant conversations, and generosity to others were some of the reasons that contributed to his every growing circle of friends.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 20, 2003, at Grace Presbyterian Church, 2801 N. Garfield, Midland, Texas, with Reverend Dr. Bob Bullock officiating. Pallbearers will include sons-in-law, Mark Singh, Tom Phillips and Dennis Kanhai. Arrangements are under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home.
Final services to celebrate his life will be at 10:30 a.m. at Leo F. Kearns Funeral Home, 103-33 Lefferts Blvd., Richmond Hill, New York 11419 to be followed by cremation (visitation hours in New York are 4 to 8 p.m. August 21 and 22).

Harold L. Alsup
ODESSA — Harold L. Alsup, 83, of Odessa passed away Saturday August 23, 2003, at his residence.
Mr. Alsup was born March 16, 1920, in MadiII, Oklahoma, to Richard C. and Margaret Alsup.
Harold played football for two years at McMurry College in Tishomingo, Okla. A football injury forced him to quit and he went to work for the Louisiana Seismograph Company.
Mr. Alsup entered the Army in 1941 and was stationed in Camp Claborn in Louisiana and Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. He was in the 648th Topographical Engineers that built the Alcan Highway in Alaska. From there he served in Australia, the Philippines and New Guinea. He received an honorable discharge in September 1946. He was classified as a sharpshooter in the service.
Harold married
Janice Barnes December 25, 1941, in Durant, Oklahoma. He and Jan came to Odessa in October 1946. Harold took employment with Williamson Well Service and MWL Tool until retirement in 1982. He retired to Brownwood Lake until returning to Odessa in June 2002 to be close to his family.
Services have been scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday, August 26, 2003, at the Frank W Wilson Funeral Directors Chapel, with the Revs. Richard Hetzel and Mark Scott officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Survivors include his wife, Janice Alsup of Odessa; son, Terry Alsup and wife, Gail, of Las Vegas, Nev.; daughters, Micki Barnett and husband, Ronnie, and Vicki Thornton and husband, Larry, all of Odessa; sisters, Louise Tash and Noweta Somners, both of Miami, Fla.; grandchildren, Marlo Crow and husband, Guy, of Hurst, Texas, Julie Terry and husband, Jerry, of Wylie, Texas, Andrea Trotter and husband, Charlie, of Tampa, Fla., Joni Jensen and husband, Scott, of Kearney, Neb., Jenni and Kelli Barnett of Odessa; two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
