Edwin William ‘Buck’ Bedrick Sr.
ODESSA — Edwin William “Buck” Bedrick Sr., 79, a longtime resident of Odessa, passed away Tuesday, August 5, 2003, at the Hospice House after a short illness. He was born May 25, 1924, in Denton County, Texas. He was a retired plant superintendent for Mobil Oil Co. for 29 years and retired in 1980. He and his family built their house in Odessa. He was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, the PJST Lodge in Temple, Texas, and the Catholic Life Ins Union.
He married
Delores Boerner December 31, 1949, in the St. Thomas Catholic Church in Pilot Point, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Agnes Bedrick, and daughter, Rosalita Bedrick.
He is survived by his wife, Dolores Bedrick of Odessa; sons, Eddie Bedrick and wife, Ann, of Odessa, Phillip Bedrick and wife, Melanie, of Odessa, Steve Bedrick and wife, Connie, of Odessa, and Tommy Bedrick and wife, Rhonda, of Springtown; daughters, Fran Brunkenhoefer and husband, Allen, of Santa Fe, Texas, and Pam Mullins and husband, Billy, of Jarrell; brother, Gene Bedrick and wife, Geneva, of Cartwright, Okla.; sister, Helen Arnold and husband, Royce, of Whitesboro; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral Mass will be held at 9 a.m. Friday, August 8, 2003, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church with Rev. Mark Woodruff officiating. Interment will follow at Rose Hill cemetery.

Vance ‘Buddy’ Beene
FARMINGTON, N.M. — Vance “Buddy” Beene, 71, of Farmington, N.M. passed away Saturday, July 26, 2003, in Farmington.
He was born Aug. 18, 1931 to Eddie and Mary Beene in Lou Ann, Ark.
He and his parents moved to Odessa in 1937. He graduated from Odessa High School and attended Odessa Junior College before joining the U.S. Air Force. He worked in the oil business and owned an oil-related business in Odessa, Hobbs, N.M., Corpus Christi and Houston, before moving to Farmington in 1988.
He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Loretta of 45 years; son, Eddie and his wife, Terri, of Wall; daughters, Celinda Knight of Midland, Joni Nickoley and husband, David, of Algonquin, Ill. And Dawn Washburn and husband, Cliff, of Farmington; brother, Charles Beene and wife, Virginia, of Odessa; sister, Collene Fletcher and husband, Wilburn, of Bronte. Also surviving are eight grandchildren, Casey and Stephaney Beene, Katie and Nick Knight, Emma and Jack Nickoley and Hannah and Mallory Washburn.
Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. July 29 at Greenlawn cemetery with Bishop Greg Kempton officiating.
Myrtle ‘LaVerne’ Dye
ODESSA — Myrtle “LaVerne” Dye, 73 years of age passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2003, at Medical Center Hospital.
She was born February 16, 1930 in Bryson to Emmett A. and Jessie W. Carruth. She married
William H. Dye Oct. 2, 1970 in Lovington, N.M.
She was a homemaker and member of Westpark Apostolic Church. She was preceded in death by husband, parents, and sister: Dorene Nail.
She is survived by her son, Emmett Lee Hollowell of Millican; daughter; Thresa Crenshaw of Anderson; grandchildren; Shod Epperson, Chris McGrew, Elyshac Hollowell and Jessi Hollowell; great-grandchildren, Nathan McGrew and Austin McGrew; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be today from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Odessa Funeral Home.
Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, 2003, at Sunset Memorial Gardens with Pastor Allen Harris officiating.

Noris Gale Nelson
ODESSA — Noris Gale Nelson, 79, a longtime resident of Odessa passed away Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2003, at the Hospice House.
He was born May 3, 1924 in Casper, Wyoming. He married
Margrieute Fowler Brunner Jan. 15, 1971 in Odessa. She preceded him in death on April 22, 2003.
Mr. Nelson served in the U.S. Army Air Corp 8th Air Force. He was a B-17 Bomber pilot. He flew 16 missions during WWII. He was co-owner of Nelson Office Supply for many years. He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church where he was an elder. He was a charter member of the Desert Squadron of the Confederate Air Force. He was also a member of the Odessa Chuck Wagon Gang.
He is survived by his sons, Frank Nelson of Arlington, Lance Nelson of lnez, TX; step-son, Gordon Brunner of Odessa; daughters, Gail Jackson of Odessa, and Marty Woody of Llano; step-daughters, Janice Canon of Arroyo Grande, CA, Patti Wood of San Angelo and Debbie Homfeld and husband Ryki of Odessa; brother, Kay Nelson and wife Mary of Odessa; 13 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren.
The family will meet with friends for a visitation 6 to 8 p.m. today at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, 2003, at Sunset Memorial Gardens and a Memorial Service at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Claire O’Neal Danhof officiating.

Ramiro Cantu
ODESSA — Ramiro Cantu, 44, a truck driver, passed away Saturday, July 26, 2003, in San Angelo, Texas. Mr. Cantu lived in Odessa for seven years. He was born July 21, 1959, in Mathis, Texas, the son of Ray and Santos (Gonzales) Cantu.
He is survived by his wife, Rosa; his mother, Santos Cantu; daughter, Melissa Cruz of Dimmitt; sons, Ruben Cantu of Hereford and Nicholas Soto of Odessa; granddaughter, Alexandra Cruz of Dimmitt; brothers, Israel Cantu, Ruben Cantu and Frank Cantu, all of Odessa, Freddie Cantu of Waco, Ben Cantu of Bovina and Robert Cantu of Midland; sisters, Margie Aguilar and Mary Ann Cantu, both of Odessa. He was preceded in death by his father, Ray Cantu.
Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Martinez Funeral Home.
Rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 30, 2003, at Holy Redeemer with Father Frank Chavez officiating. Burial will be at the Ector County cemetery.
William Joseph Mewhorter
MIDLAND — William Joseph Mewhorter, 78, of Midland died Sunday, July 27, 2003.
He was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, May 17, 1925, and moved to Amarillo, Texas, in 1935. He then left Amarillo in 1942 at the age of 17 to join the Navy. After World War II, he attended Texas College of Mines (now University of Texas at EI Paso) on an athletic scholarship, playing football and basketball. He graduated in 1948 with a bachelor of business administration degree.
In EI Paso, he began his 42-year banking career with the State National Bank. Moving to Midland in 1966, he was employed by The First National Bank of Midland. He used to joke that he had worked in four banks and never left that building. He subsequently charted two local banks before retiring in 1989. He was past President of the Midland Chamber of Commerce and volunteered with several United Way agencies. After retirement, he was active with the CAF, Ham-Radio, QB’s and Midland Memorial Hospital Auxiliary with his claim to fame being that he was responsible for changing the men’s vests from pink to blue.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Anne; his sister, Ellen Nizzi of Amarillo; his son, Bill and his wife, Lisa, and their two daughters, Amanda and Alexandra; his daughter, Lynn and her husband, Paul, and their two children, Eric and Gillian of Miami, Florida. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service for Bill is scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 30, 2003, at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church in Midland. Arrangements are under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home, 801 Andrews Hwy. Midland, Texas.

Louise B. Powell
FORT STOCKTON — Louise B. Powell, 85, of Fort Stockton, Texas, passed away Saturday, July 26, 2003.
Services were at 2 p.m. Monday at the Fort Stockton Church of Christ, followed by burial at the East Hill cemetery with Harold Durham officiating.
Louise was born January 30, 1918, in Comanche, Texas, to John and Georgie Boyd. She graduated from Ozona High School. Louise was a retired bookkeeper in the family business, a strong supporter of the FFA and had a love of creating and making china dolls.
In 1939, she married
E. F. “Fish” Powell and to the marriage three children were born, Kent Powell of Rankin, Richard Powell of Alpine and Brenda Menzies of Aledo, Texas.
Louise is survived by her husband, their three children, daughters-in-law, Judith Powell and Lynda Powell, and son-in-law, John Menzies. Also surviving her are grandchildren Trey and Justin Powell of Rankin, Nena Boettcher and husband, Harlan, of East Bernard, Turtle Powell and wife, Molly, of Stephenville, Leslee Hallmark and husband, Trey, of San Antonio, and Ashely Menzie of Aledo. She was also survived by five great-grandchildren, a sister, Johnnye Coleman of Birmingham, Ala., and many nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Gerald Porter, Ernie Holder, David Shelton, Peeberry White, Joe Prosise, Harper Caldwell, Darryl Scott and Delmon Hodges. The honorary pallbearers will be her grandsons along with Mac Hill, Roger Epps, Brandon Hayman, Bill Moody, Frank Velasco and Gabriel Hernandez.
Robert Hollard Scoggins
MIDLAND — Robert Hollard Scoggins, 76, of Midland, died Sunday, July 27, 2003.
Robert was born in Stephens County, Texas, on January 17, 1927, to Herman and Lucy Scoggins. He graduated from Breckenridge High School and attended Hardin Simmons University in Abilene, Texas.
Robert was enlisted in the United States Army on June 7, 1945, and served as Sergeant in the 2675 Regiment Allied Commission Headquarters Company until February 7, 1947. While serving his country he received commendation for Meritorious Achievement in the Mediterranean Theatre of Operations. He married
Shirlene Mullins on June 7, 1957, in Odessa, Texas. He retired as Energy Ventures Division Manager for Highland Industries in 1994. Highland employed him from 1962 to 1994.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Shirlene Scoggins of Midland; one son, Robert Randall Scoggins of Grapevine, Texas; four daughters, Robbye Fullen of Llano, Texas, Shelly Schilling of Hereford, Texas, Krystal Lacey of Phoenix, Arizona, and Kelly Fuller of Lubbock, Texas; three sisters, Charlene Hanza of Lawton, Oklahoma, Dorthy Scoggins of Lindsay, Oklahoma, and Jo Bray of Sayre, Oklahoma. He leaves eleven grandchildren.
A devout husband and father, Robert served as Den Leader of Cub Scouts and was inducted into the Order of the Arrow, an honorary membership of the Boy Scouts of American.
Robert was a loving father and grandfather who enjoyed spending his retirement years visiting his children and grandchildren. With woodworking as a hobby, he took great pleasure in making beautiful birdhouses for friends and family. He attended Kelview Baptist Church in Midland. He was baptized as a teenager at Railroad Creek near Necessity, Texas.
The family will receive friends at Ellis Funeral Home, Wednesday, July 30, 2003, between the hours of 6 and 8 p.m.
Funeral services have been scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday, July 31, 2003, at Kelview Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park. Arrangements are under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home, 801 Andrews Hwy. Midland, Texas.
Pallbearers, grandsons of Robert, include Chad and Blake Schilling, Joshua and Jeremy Fuller, James and Daniel Lacey; and honorary pallbearers, Robert Christopher Scoggins and Ryan Lacey.

FORT DAVIS — Andrew Bertko, 84, a retired manager of a meat market, of Fort Davis, died Saturday, July 19, 2003, in a Fort Davis area nursing home.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Geeslin Funeral Home. Military graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Hillcrest cemetery with the Rev. David Pate officiating. Arrangements by Geeslin Funeral Home.
He was born in Cranesville, Penn., and was a WWII veteran of the U.S. Army. He was Baptist.
