Kenneth Wayne Thompson Sr.

ODESSA — Kenneth Wayne Thompson Sr., 78, of Odessa, went to be with the Lord Jan. 1, 2004.
He was born March 6, 1925, in Rockwall, Texas, to Ezra Sr. and Dertha Salone Westberry Thompson. At the age of 3, after the passing of his mother, Dertha Salone, he went to live and be cared for by his sister Opal Smith.
At the age of 6, Eunice and Orris Fike came to Oklahoma to take a younger sibling home, Tommy Jr., and took our sweet daddy as well. Wayne and Jr. were raised by their cousin and loved them very much; they were Mom and Dad to them for over 50 years.
Dad fought a tough long battle of cancer and even as he hurt so badly he always had a wink in his eye and a million-dollar smile. Dad missed our precious mother, his wife of 57 years, and knew the battle was over, and it was time to reunite this wonderful couple, who walked and danced many a mile together holding onto each other’s hand.
Wayne loved to go fishing and hunting and to spend time with his family. Family was always first, and he worked hard on values, morals and holding his family together. Raised a Baptist under the precious guidance of his parents, he knew the Lord and knew how important his family was.
While in the U.S. Navy, Wayne was stationed in Long Beach, Calif., where he met the love of his life, Vera Mae Hammett. They were joined together in marriage at the home of Eunice and Orris Fike May 18, 1946. They brought their family to Odessa in 1956 and said this would be home for the rest of their lives.
Wayne was broken in as a car salesman by his brother-in-law, Paul Cole. He worked for Broncho Chevrolet, Sewell Ford Motor Co. and after retiring from Sewell, he opened up Triple A Motors and Triple A Auto Parts. There was never a person he didn’t try to help. After retiring in 1993, he went and spent many good times at Oak Creek Lake with his wife, family and friends.
When the grandbabies came along, he spent and devoted his life to them. They were also the magic in his life that helped him fight the cancer that was tearing up his body. He fought long and hard to make sure he would get to see each and every one of those babies. He was a good Poppy.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dertha Salone and Ezra Thompson Sr.; his mom and dad, Eunice and Orris Fike; sisters, Opal Smith, Thelma Malone, Mabel Shepperd and Billy Jean Poteet; brother, T. G. Thompson; and his precious wife, Vera Mae Hammett Thompson, who died Sept. 29, 2003.
He leaves behind three children, Kenneth Wayne (Butch) Thompson Jr. of Odessa, Jack Loyd Thompson and wife Judy of Odessa and Lola Cheryl Gardenhire and husband Gordy of Blackwell; grandchildren, Tammye Dee Thompson Hayes and husband Andy of Arlington, Rocky Dean Thompson of San Francisco, Calif., Gregory Neal Gardenhire and wife Wendy of Odessa, Gary Keith Gardenhire of Odessa, Allisa Gardenhire of Odessa, Jerrod Chayne Gardenhire and wife Ellen of Irving, Kevin Wayne Thompson and wife Angelia of Odessa, Coby Pool of Odessa and Teresa Morris of Austin; great-grandchildren, Tiffannie Shyanne, Brittani Shaye, Maci Brooke Gardenhire of Odessa, Tori Thompson and Brandon Wayne Thompson and Coy Morris of Odessa and the latest, Cargo Mason Hayes; his sisters in life, Faye Weaver Coleman of Odessa and Betty Davis Snapp of Waterwood; sister-in-law, Boots Thompson of Coolidge, Ariz.; brothers, Ezra (Tommy) Thompson Jr. and wife Judy of Smithville, Miss., Weldon Smith and wife Shirley of McAlester, Okla., and Carl Baker of Blackwell, Texas.
The warmest wishes to the Allison Cancer Center and Dr. Rostogi and Mary Williams, Midland Memorial four east nurses, whom Dad loved so much and a special thanks to Laurie, Coco, Pat and Penny, Dr. Carl D. Agostino, and Mike at Allen Brace Co. and a special thanks for the last two weeks to Susan and Karen who worked so tenderly with Dad and the Hospice House who made us feel comfort for the tender care of Dad.
