Mary Ruth Snoddy

ODESSA — Mary Ruth Snoddy, 84, passed away Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, at Medical Center Hospital. She was born Feb. 10, 1919, in Findlay, Ohio, to Mr. and Mrs. Charles M. Beard.
She was educated in Ohio and received her business degree from Findlay College. It was there she met her husband, Robert D. Snoddy. They were married for more than 62 years until her death.
Mary Ruth was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was secretary at Dowling Elementary for 17 years. She was active in her church and PTA. She was a former member of the Odessa Study Club, the Pilot Club International and Theta Mu Sorority.
She enjoyed family and church activities. She spent many years in the bleachers following the athletic careers of her husband, sons and grandchildren. She loved Asbury United Methodist Church and her Sunday school class. Mary Ruth enjoyed the Wednesday night dinners and programs at Asbury, along with the conversations with friends.
She is survived by her husband, Robert D. Snoddy, who was always proudly at her side. She had two sons, Robert Charles Snoddy of Lewisville and Thomas Beard Snoddy of Odessa; grandchildren, Shani Michelle Snoddy of San Angelo, Robert Walker Snoddy of Washington, D.C., Heather Leigh Snoddy of Odessa and Craig Whitson Snoddy of Odessa; and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation with the family will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004, at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
Mary Ruth’s funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2004, at Asbury United Methodist Church with her pastor Dave Dinneen officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Honorary pallbearers are the members of the Wesley Sunday School Class. Pallbearers will be Steve Barron, John Bushman, Ragon Gilbert, Rodney Hurt, Terry Richey and Doug Shelton.
The family suggest memorials be made to Asbury United Methodist Church or the Permian Basin Rehabilitation Center.

Frank L. Thompson

MIDLAND — Frank L. Thompson, 85 years young, of Midland, Texas, passed away Jan. 13, 2004, at his home in Horseshoe Bay, Texas. A rosary service will be held at Ellis Funeral Home at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 19, 2004. A funeral mass will be held in his honor Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004, at 11 a.m. at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, with interment following at the old Valhalla Mausoleum at Resthaven Memorial Park-North. Arrangements are under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home, 801 Andrews Hwy., Midland, Texas.
Frank L. Thompson was born April 4, 1918, in Muskogee, Okla. He was a graduate of Baylor Military Academy and a 1941 Texas A&M Corps graduate. He served in the US Army during WWII and received a Purple Heart and other commendations throughout his service in the South Pacific. He also served in the 158th Regimental combat team “The Bushmasters.”
Frank married Sheila Peart in 1945 and “KEPT THIS BROAD” for a short 58 years. After they were married , the couple moved from California to Midland, where he joined his father in A.W. Thompson Drilling. They were long-time Midlanders, who raised their children here and were active members of the community, which they helped to build.
In the years to follow, he served as Midland’s mayor, past president of Midland Country Club, a member of Trinity Towers founding board, also a board member of Midland National Bank and American Bank of Texas. He was a member of Scott & Whites Visitors’ Board and founded a Lectureship at Scott & White on Endocrinology. Last but not least, he was an active alumni and supporter of Texas A&M.
Sheila would like to recognize all the wonderful people who helped and supported her and Frank these last years; Rich Martinez, who lost his “Sonic running buddy, ” Sofia Weindel, Eddy Young, Dorothy Bowman, Gary Mahana, Syanna Sewell, Kim Koenig and his special, compassionate friend and Eucharistic minister, Jay Suter.
We would like to say one last word, since we never got the last word, THEY BROKE THE MOLD. WE LOVE AND MISS YOU AND CALL AGAIN.
Frank is survived by his wife, Sheila of Midland and Horseshoe Bay, Texas; his sister, Margaret Thompson, USN-Ret., of Midland, who was beaten by her brother in tennis left-handed; his children, Michael A. Thompson and wife, Alma, Loretto T. Thoroughman and husband, Bill, and Theresa T. Woodruff and husband, Bill; grandchildren, Michel Ann Thompson Coleman and husband, Troy, of Santa Clara, Calif., Andrew Trey Thompson and wife, Shea, of Midland, Jon Paul Thompson of Midland, Katherine Thoroughman Weary and husband, Brett, of Washington, D.C., Steven Thoroughman of the Woodlands, Texas, Jennifer Woodruff Urias and husband, Junior, of Midland, Nickolaus J. Woodruff of Houston, TX, and Barbara Jean Woodruff of Houston, Texas; great-grandchildren, Callen and Case Thompson of Midland, and Mackenzie Urias of Midland.
The pallbearers are his four grandsons, Trey Thompson, Jon Paul Thompson, Nick Woodruff and Steve Thoroughman.
The family requests all memorials to be directed to Midland Memorial Hospital, 2200 W. Illinois, Midland, TX 79701 and Trinity Towers, 2800 W. Illinois, Midland, TX 79701.

Lois Vessells

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Lois June Popham Vessells, 92, a former resident of Andrews, died Friday, Jan. 16, 2004.
She is survived by her daughter, Joan Lea Kysar and husband, Carroll, of Andrews; granddaughters, Susan Lea Salyer of Andrews and Brenda Kay McCoy and husband, Larry, of Magnolia; great-grandsons, Stephen Lee Salyer, Jacob McCoy and Matthew McCoy; numerous nieces, nephew and family.
Lois was preceded in death by her husband, Haroll Guy Vessells, and three sisters, Evelyn Bridgewater, Jonie Parker and Hollie McGowan.
Lois was active in Daughters American Revolution and Electra Chapter 13 Order Eastern Star in Farmington, N.M., Garden Clubs in Farmington, N.M., and Houston. Lois and her husband were owners of Guy Hardware in Houston and Guy Butane in Farmington, N.M.
Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul NE, Albuquerque, N.M., at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2004.
Friends may visit French Mortuary from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004.

Wesley Morgan Hardin

ODESSA — Wesley Morgan Hardin, 53, of Odessa, died in a plane crash near Weatherford, Texas, on Jan. 15, 2004.
He was born Aug. 2, 1950, in Odessa, Texas. He was educated in the Ector County Independent School District and graduated from Permian High School in 1968. He earned a degree in pharmacy from the University of Texas and was the owner/pharmacist of University Pharmacy.
Wesley was a member of First Baptist Church, served on the Odessa College Foundation, the Odessa Country Club Board of Directors, was a past president of the West Texas Pharmacy Association and past president of the Flatlanders Ski Club.
Wesley enjoyed golf, snow skiing, travel, flying and hunting.
He was particularly proud of his two sons, Brandon, a midshipman at the U.S. Naval Academy, and Grayson, a senior at Odessa High School. The things he liked best included fast red cars, his four Labrador retrievers, beautiful spring flowers and the University of Texas football team.
He is survived by his wife, Holly Hampton Hardin; his sons, Brandon Chase Hardin and Grayson Noel Hardin; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Morgan Hardin; his sister, Vicky Hardin; and his brother, Wilson Hardin.
Wesley’s memorial service will be at 11 a.m. today at First Baptist Church in Odessa, followed by visitation with the family at the church.
Funeral services are entrusted to Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors.
The family suggest memorials be made to the First Baptist Church or the Odessa College Foundation.

Timothy J. Murphy

MIDLAND — The Rev. Monsignor Timothy J. Murphy, P.A., V.G., J.C.L., passed away Friday, Jan. 16, 2004, at St. Ann Parish in Midland, Texas. The Monsignor, 68, was pastor of the Midland parish since July 1, 1996.
A rosary and wake service will be held at 7 p.m. today at St. Ann Church. The Rev. Rodney White, associate pastor at St. Ann, will lead the service, and the Rev. Monsignor Larry J. Droll, Chancellor of the diocese of San Angelo, will deliver the eulogy. Msgr. Murphy’s body will lie in state at St. Ann through the night, watched over by an Honor Guard from the Knights of Columbus.
The Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20 at St. Ann. The Most Rev. Michael D. Pfeifer, OMI, Bishop of San Angelo, will be the principal celebrant, and the Most Rev. Joe S. Vasquez, auxiliary bishop of Houston, will the principal concelebrant. Other concelebrants will include the priests of the diocese of San Angelo and Msgr. Murphy’s priest friends from throughout the country. The Rev. Msgr. Frederick Nawarskas, pastor of Holy Family Church in Abilene, will be the homilist.
Following the mass, Msgr. Murphy’s body will be taken to Calvary Catholic cemetery in San Angelo, where it will be interred next to his father. It is anticipated that the services at Calvary cemetery will take place between 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Tuesday. Following the interment, a reception and visitation with the family will take place at Holy Angels’ Parish Hall.
Timothy J. Murphy, the oldest of three children, was born Aug. 31, 1935, in Queens, N.Y., to Timothy and Nora Murphy. He attended St. Bartholomew’s grade school in Elmhurst, Queens, and graduated from Cathedral Seminary High School in Brooklyn. He completed his college studies at St. Mary’s Seminary in Kentucky, and his theological studies at the Pontifical College Josephinum in Columbus, Ohio. He was ordained to the Catholic priesthood on May 26, 1962, for the diocese of San Angelo. Following his ordination, Msgr. Murphy was sent to The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., where he completed his studies in Canon Law and was awarded the Licentiate Degree.
Msgr. Murphy served as pastor at Holy Angels Church in San Angelo from 1969 to 1982; at Holy Family Church in Abilene from 1982 to 1996; and at St. Ann in Midland since 1996.
Additionally, he served as chancellor of the diocese of San Angelo from 1970 to 1980; and Vicar General of the diocese from 1980 to the present. Over the years, he also served as superintendent of schools, was a diocesan consultor and a member of the Presbyterial Council, the Priests’ Personnel Board, the Priests’ Pension Plan and the Diocesan Finance Council. He has been the judicial vicar of the diocese since 1967.
During his pastorates, Msgr. Murphy oversaw the construction of churches at Holy Angels in San Angelo in 1982, and Holy Family in Abilene in 1985; and anew office building at St. Ann, which was dedicated only a few days on Tuesday, Jan. 13.
He is survived by his sister, U.S. Air Force Col. Patricia “Pat” Murphy of San Antonio; his brother, Emmet Murphy of Westlake Village, Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was honored by Pope John Paul II, who in 1989, named him a Chaplain of Honor to His Holiness, and then, subsequently, in 1995, promoted him to Protonotary Apostolic, the highest degree of domestic prelate in the Catholic Church.
He will be particularly missed by the parishioners of St. Ann, Holy Family and Holy Angels parishes, as well as by his brother priests and all the people of the diocese.
“You are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek . . . well done, good and faithful servant.”

W. Carter Bryant

ODESSA — W. Carter Bryant, 73, of Odessa, surrounded by his loving family, passed away Friday, Jan. 30, 2004, at his residence.
He was born Sept. 7, 1930, in Powell, Texas, to Homer and Edel Bryant. He was a Christian/Baptist, a U.S. Navy Veteran and worked in the Insurance Industry.
Mr. Bryant was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Earl Bryant and Clyde Bryant.
He is survived by his wife, Julia Bryant of Odessa; one son, David Bryant and wife Andrea of Goodyear, Ariz.; five daughters, Donna Jackson and husband Rob of Gunner, Texas, Debbie Line and husband Kelly of Allen, Tammie Harris of Midland, Frances Wheeler and husband Joe of Tyler and Sandra Wilkerson of Burnet; two brothers, Harold Bryant and wife Dorothy of Amarillo and Wayne Bryant and wife Fayrene of Lubbock, one sister, Evelyn Robertson of Alabama; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
We the family, would like to take this time, to express our utmost sincere gratitude to the Staff at Home Hospice and especially Dr. Ramanathan for the wonderful and special care that was given to my Husband, Dad and GrandDad.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today with the family to visit with friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Odessa Funeral Home.
Services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2004, at Temple Baptist Calvery Chapel with the Rev. Jack Watkins officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens cemetery.

Esther ‘Pearl’ Leslie

ODESSA — Esther “Pearl” Leslie went to be with God on Jan. 30, 2004, at Hospice House after suffering with Parkinson’s disease over 30 years.
She was born in New Mexico, close to Four Corners. She was a resident of Avalon Nursing Center for eight years.
Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. today in the chapel of Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors with the Rev. Dick Brown officiating. Interment will be held in Snyder, Texas.
Pearl was a homemaker when her children were small; after they were grown, she went to work as a realtor. At one time in her career, she was the top sales person of the year in El Paso where she lived for 30 years. Pearl was a kind, loving and giving wife, mother and grandmother. There was nothing she wouldn’t do for her family. She was a member of the Lutheran Church.
Her husband, Woodrow Leslie, preceded Pearl in death in 1987.
She is survived by her children, Robert “Bob” Leslie and wife Loretta of Odessa, William “Bill” Leslie of Dallas and Wanda Harman of San Antonio. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Malissa Roach and husband Russell of Odessa, David Leslie of Dallas, Kim Robison and husband Richard of Odessa, Scott Harman and wife Ami of Austin, Leslie Ann Harman of San Marcos, Shelly Gwin and husband Trent of Ferris and Wendi Sherrill and husband Jason of North Carolina; and great-grandchildren, Kelli Olvera and husband Anthony of Odessa, Brandon Cowart of Odessa, Brittany Cowart of Dallas, Shauna Roach of Odessa, Rebecca and Nathan Robison of Odessa, Tommy and Shelsey Gwin of Dallas and Sarah and Savanah Sherrill of North Carolina; and great-great-granddaughter, Analise Olvera.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice House, 903 N. Sam Houston, Odessa, TX 79761.

Beverly Gibson

MIDLAND — Beverly Baine Chambers Gibson died Monday, Jan. 5, 2004. She was born Nov. 13, 1916, to Alma and Pickett McCarrell Chambers in Snyder. She graduated from Pecos High School and moved to Midland where she met, and then married , Art W. Gibson on Aug. 5, 1939. After living a few years in Houston they returned to Midland in 1951 where they continued to enjoy their 64 years of marriage.
Her parents, two sisters, Gwen Smith and Bobbie Jean Malone, and a daughter, Ann Gibson Chandler, preceded her in death.
Beverly is survived by her husband; a daughter, Gwen Gibson of Odessa; a granddaughter, Kathleen Chandler Tippins and her husband, Ian, of Tahoe Vista, Calif.; a grandson, Capt. Daniel Chambers Gibson, of Dayton, Ohio; and a great-grandson, Aidan Arthur Tippins of Tahoe Vista.
She is also survived by an extended family comprised of Barbara Chandler of Houston; grandsons, Michael Pearce and wife Susan of Chapel Hill, N.C., Kevin Pearce and wife Laura of New York City, Robert Chandler of Santa Monica, Calif., Dean Chandler of New York City; and granddaughter, Nicole Angell and husband Jim of Denver; and nine additional great-grandchildren.
The family wishes to express its thanks to Hospice of Midland, with special thanks to Yolanda Jimenez and Ann Parker, and neighbors Bonnie and Jerry Petree.
Services have been scheduled for 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Trinity with entombment to follow in the Mausoleum at Resthaven Memorial Park. Arrangements are under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home, 801 Andrews Hwy. Midland, Texas.
Pallbearers will be Lamar Thomas, Ben Hood, Clarence Chandler, Jim Dewey, Tom Brandt and Judge Bill Morrow. Honorary pallbearers are Delwood Lee, Bill Marshall, Jerry Petree and Wayne Scott.
