Hershel L. Montgomery
ODESSA — Hershel L. Montgomery, 67, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2003, at Hospice House in Odessa.
Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004, at Sunset Memorial Chapel with his brother, Bart Montgomery, and brother-in-law, Boyd Whitehead, officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Hershey was born Feb. 17, 1936, in Roswell, N.M., to James and May Montgomery. He married
K on July 6, 1958. He and K resided in Odessa for 45 years. Hershey often told his daughters “When the day is over, and I haven’t met a new friend, then my day is worthless.” Many will remember him for his generous heart. He and K shared a love for football; especially loved the Cowboys, despite K’s advice. He also enjoyed his grandbabies, crosswords, friends and a life long love for the “oil patch.”
His wife and parents preceded him in death.
Hershey is survived by his daughters, Traci Ward and husband Jimmy of Pearland and Kelli Troup and husband Brad of Houston; brother, Bart Montgomery of Alabama; sister, Bonnie Sue Whitehead of Altus, Okla.; and four grandchildren, Dustin Blair of Norman, Okla., Casey Blair of Levelland and Alexandria and Kassidy Troup, both of Houston.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be sent to Odessa Hospice.
Services are under the care of Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.
Craig D. Munson
MIDLAND — Craig D. Munson, of Midland, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2003.
He was born Dec. 13, 1923, in Wallingford, Conn., to Craig Douglas and Louise Atwater Munson.
He attended the Choate School, where his interests were music, choir, glee club, marching and dance bands, interscholastic golf, ice hockey and crew. Graduating in the class of 1942, he entered the Yale University freshman class under the accelerated wartime program, leaving in February 1943 to serve in the U.S. Air Force Ground Corps. After three years in the military, he returned to Yale under the G.I. Bill of Rights, and graduated with a B.A. degree in 1948.
For 20 years thereafter, he was employed by The International Silver Co. of Meriden, Conn., manufacturer of tableware, where he held sales, marketing, and management positions throughout the United States.
In 1973, he accepted a sales position on the Pacific coast with Girard Perregaux, manufacturer of fine Swiss watches, from where he retired to West Texas in 1986. He was an officer of Bennett-Munson Inc., of Odessa and Midland, Texas. Until recently, he represented Curtis & Curtis Inc., of Clovis, N.M., in sales of lawn care products to the golf course industry.
He is survived by his wife, the former Marie O. Bennett of Midland, Texas; two sisters, Marjory Weldon of Cheshire, Conn., and Louise Dunn of Oberlin, Ohio; three children, Craig D. Munson III of Carlsbad, Calif., the Rev. Mary Louise Schmalz of Mill Valley, Calif., and Joanne Munson of Boulder Creek, Calif.; three stepsons, Dr. William F. Bennett of Austin, Texas, Robert “Chris” Bennett of Lewisville, Texas, and Mark Bennett of Odessa, Texas; and eleven grandchildren.
Memorial services have been scheduled for 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004, at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Trinity with the Rev. Mark Cannady officiating.
Arrangements are under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home, 801 Andrews Highway, Midland, Texas.

Mary L. Elkins
ODESSA — Mary L. Elkins was born March 31, 1928, in Whitesboro, Texas, to Joe and Velma Godwin. She passed away Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, at Medical Center Hospital. She was 75.
Mary came to Odessa in 1957. She retired from Texas Instruments where she worked as an inspector. She married
David Elkins on Jan. 9, 1953, in Gainesville. They shared 51 years together.
Mary was a longtime member of Friendship Baptist Church. She was known to her family and friends for her fun-loving spirit. She especially loved all of the opportunities she had to spend time with her family.
Mary is preceded in death by her parents and a son, Eddie Allen.
She is survived by her husband, David Elkins; sons, James Allen and wife, Becky, of Muncie, Ind., David Elkins and wife, Judy, of Odessa, and Herman Allen and wife, Susie, of Pottsboro, Texas; stepbrother, Cecil McClure of Deadwood, Colo.; and grandchildren, Shane, Shawn, Kristen, Angela, Roberta, Jeanna, Desiree and Dennis.
Services are scheduled for 3 p.m. Thursday at the Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors Chapel with the Rev. David Atkins officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Foundation, or the American Lung Association.

Wanda Honeycutt
ODESSA — Wanda Ilene Honeycutt, 64, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2004, at Medical Center Hospital. She was born Aug. 11, 1939, in Phoenix, Ariz., to Robert and Alice Phillips. She was a homemaker and member of Belmont Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Jack Honeycutt of Odessa; daughters, Leslie R. Pyle and husband, Bryan, of Odessa and Dee L. Hodge and husband, Nick, of Odessa; brother, Robert Phillips of Odessa; grandchildren, Jessica, Kendra, Krista, Nerisa and Nicky Jack; great-grandchildren, Zoie, Joe, Kayli and Donavan; along with numerous nieces and nephews and many friends.
She will be loved and missed by many.
Visitation will begin today at Odessa Funeral Home. Graveside services are set for 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30, 2004, at Rose Hill cemetery with the Rev. Bryan S. Saffle officiating. A memorial service is set for 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004, at Belmont Baptist Church, 1200 E 8th St., with the Rev. Bryan S. Saffle officiating.

Sisto Hernandez Huerta Sr.
ODESSA — Sisto Hernandez Huerta Sr., 60, of Odessa, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2004, at Medical Center Hospital. Mr. Huerta was born March 12, 1943, in Marfa, Texas, to Juan and Maria De Jesus Hernandez Huerta. He was a Christian Catholic, an Army veteran and worked in the oilfield industry.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Frank Huerta. He is survived by two sons, Sisto Villa Huerta Jr. and Ricky Villa Huerta, and one daughter, Stacey Villa Huerta, all of Odessa; three brothers, Cypriano Huerta, Juan Jr. Huerta and Carlos Huerta, all of Odessa; four sisters, Emma BetanCourt of Odessa, Maria Elena Garza of Arlington, Ramona Bonilla of Midland and Juana Villescas of Odessa; and several nieces and nephews.
A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today, Jan. 29, 2004, at Odessa Funeral Home Chapel. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 30, 2004, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Joseph Uecker officiating. Interment to follow at Rose Hill cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Ben Bonilla Jr., Gabriel Molinar, David BetanCourt Richard BetanCourt, Alvaro BetanCourt, Jesus Villescas Jr. and Roy Serrano.

Gilbert Miller
ODESSA — Gilbert Miller, 62, of Odessa passed away Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004. He was born Oct. 1, 1941 in Marfa. He was a U.S. Army veteran. He had worked as an insurance salesman for 41 years He was a member of the Elks Lodge.
He is survived by his wife, Juanita Miller of Odessa; son, Gilbert Miller Jr. of Odessa; daughters, Yvette Rodriguez and Myra Miller, both of Odessa; sisters, Pat Pacheco of Stockton, Calif., and Jeanie Hernandez of El Paso; and three grandchildren, Steven, Tarah and Jerred.
Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 29, 2004, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Marfa. Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30, 2004, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Marfa. Burial will follow at the Marfa cemetery.
He was a loving husband, dad and grandpa. His caring nature will be missed.

Nola B. Scribner
FARMINGTON, N.M. — Nola B. Scribner, 87, a longtime resident of Odessa, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2004, at her residence. She was born Dec. 28, 1916, in Seibert, Colo., and lived on the family homestead in Dove Creek, Colo., for several years.
Her family moved to Farmington, N.M., where she graduated from high school. She married
Robert Keith Scribner July 10, 1935, in Farmington. She was devoted to her family. Her husband of 69 years filled her life with adventure, joy and abiding love. She took great delight in her son, grandsons, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Special interests included bowling in several Odessa leagues, enjoying vacations with her grandsons at the family cabin in Colorado, crafts and needlework. She was a Methodist.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Mary Martindale Simmons; brothers, Kenneth Simmons, Raymond Simmons and Marvin Simmons; and sister, Zula A. Simmons.
She is survived by her husband, Robert Keith Scribner of Odessa; son, Robert Keith Scribner Jr. and wife, Barbara, of Odessa; brother, Walter L. Simmons of Odessa; three grandchildren, Kevin, Steven and David Scribner; and four great-grandchildren, Sean, Tyler, Taylor and Madison Scribner; and family friend, Cindy Taylor.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 30, 2004, at Greenlawn cemetery in Farmington, N.M.

Joe ‘Joey’ Isreal Acosta
ODESSA — Went to be with our Lord on Sunday, January 11th, 2004.
He was our Beloved Son, Brother, Uncle, Nephew, Cousin and most of all Friend.
He was born on May 24th, 1964, to Emma and Jose Acosta in Odessa. He was 39 years old.
Joey is survived by many people who loved him and will never forget his kindness and generous heart that made him so special.
He is survived by his parents, Jose Salazar Acosta and Emma Madero Acosta. Sisters include Severa “Shebby” Arinevas and husband Juan, and Amanda Castelo and husband Michael, all from Odessa, Melissa Alvarado and husband Raymond from San Angelo; brother Ricky Bueno and wife Velma from the Colony.
He is also survived by his loving nieces and nephews: John Adrian (Andrea) and Erica Arinevas, Brittany and Cody Castelo, all from Odessa. Raymond (Bubba) and Dana (Lovie) from San Angelo and Cassandra, Melanie and Marcus from The Colony. One great-niece, Sarah Arinevas. Maternal grandmother Erminia P. Madero and paternal grandfather Mencho Acosta from Fort Stockton. Numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Rosary will be recited on Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004, at 7 p.m.

The family wishes to thank the nursing staff on Five Central from Medical Center Hospital for being so kind and gentle with our beloved son during his final journey home. They made Joey’s stay very comforting for both him and his family and fulfilled all his final request.

Kimberly Dawn Turner
ODESSA — Kimberly Dawn Turner, age 16, of Odessa passed away on January 10, 2004 at Medical Center Hospital as a result of injuries sustained from an automobile accident.
Kimberly was born September 29, 1987 in Midland, Texas, to Carol and Donnie Turner.
Kimberly was a sophomore at Permian High School and a member of the Permian Band as a bassoonist and on the Drumline. Previously she attended Nimitz Junior High where she was a drum major for the Nimitz Band. Kimberly also attended LBJ Elementary and Blackshear Elementary.
Kimberly had just returned from the Rose Bowl Parade with the PHS/OHS Combined Marching Bands. She said, “It was the trip of a lifetime!” As a child, she enjoyed soccer, swimming, and especially dance. However, band was the love of her life. She was preparing to perform with the Nimitz band in their State Championship concert at the TMEA convention in San Antonio in February. Kimberly was also planning to try out for the Panther Paws. Kimberly was a member of the National Junior Honor Society, All City Band, and the youth group at Immanuel Baptist. She was a member of the PHS Drumline when they won First Place at the West Texas Auxiliary Championship. Kimberly had numerous First Division ratings at Solo and Ensemble contests and served as a mentor and tutor to many of the younger bassoonists.
Kimberly is survived by her mother Carol White Johnson and step-father Mark Johnson of Odessa; father Donnie Turner of Clovis, N.M.; grandparents Lois White of Odessa and the late Joe White, Jr. formerly of Odessa, Sid and Loretta Turner of Clovis, N.M. and Bill and Eddie Johnson of Odessa; half-brother Jeremy Turner of Clovis, N.M., half-sister Jennifer Turner Wheeler and husband Benjamin and son Zachary of Clovis, N.M.; step-sister Stevie Johnson of Odessa; step-brother Cole Johnson of Odessa; uncle Robert White, wife Janicé and children Matt, Brandon and Katie of Coppell, TX; aunt Vicki Johnson and son Landon of Midland and godparents Michelle and Wesley Barnt of Lubbock, TX.
Services will be held on Thursday, January 15, 2004 at 4:00 PM at Immanuel Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Garden cemetery.
Visitation will be Tuesday, January 13, 2004 and Wednesday, January 14, 2004 from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
The family would like to thank the community and Medical Center Hospital staff for the outpouring of love, support and prayers during this time.
Kimberly wanted to be a doctor when she “grew up.” In accordance with her wish to help others, Kimberly will live on in the many people she helped by being an organ donor.
Bill Whitfield
ODESSA — Bill Whitfield, 75, of Odessa, a longtime educator and musician, passed Thursday, Oct. 30, 2003, at Hospice House. He was born on August 30, 1928, in Howe, Texas, to Hiram Thomas and Clare Mae Whitfield. Bill graduated from West Texas State University.
He served as a teacher, choir director and principal in the Monahans School district and as an education consultant at Region 18 Service Center. He also served as a choir director in the Monahans and Odessa Highland Methodist Churches. Bill was a gifted pianist who delighted many while playing at nursing homes, receptions and other events.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Nov. 2, 2003, at Highland United Methodist Church at 3 p.m. with Rev. Mark Scott and Rev. David Weyant officiating.
He is survived by his wife Georgia Whitfield of Odessa; sons, Richard Whitfield and wife, Melissa, of Austin, Texas, Ward Whitfield and wife Karla of Knoxville, Tenn.; daughter, Carole Troha and husband, Joe, of Many, La.; grandchildren Jason, Megan and Colin Troha and Daniel Whitfiled.
Family requests memorials be made to Highland Methodist Church or to the Hospice Foundation.
