Jesus Jose Pinon

ODESSA — Jesus Jose Pinon, 79, of Odessa, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2003, at the Hospice House in Odessa.
Mr. Pinon was born May 27, 1924, in Cienega de Loya, Chihuahua, Mexico, to Jose and Julia Pinon. He married Silvina Loya in Cienega, Chihuahua, in Sept. 22, 1945. Mr. Pinon was a Christian Catholic and a ranch hand.
He was preceded in death by parents; three sons, Modesto, Ramon and Perfecto Pinon; one brother, Modesto Pinon; and two sisters, Eva Loya and Dolores Perez.
He is survived by his wife, Silvina L. Pinon of Odessa; five sons, Joaquin Pinon and wife Isaac of Odessa, Perfecto Pinon II and wife Dolores of Hondo, Miss., Marin Pinon and wife Nancy of Odessa, Luis Pinon and wife Yadira of Odessa, and Manuel Pinon and wife Jessica of Odessa; six daughters, Rosa Ramos and husband Agustin of Chihuahua, Mexico, Evangelina Gonzales and husband Jesus of Odessa, Elvia Ontiveros and husband Juan of Odessa, Christina Marquez and husband Jesus of Odessa, Moraima Contreras and husband Jose of Odessa, and Gloria Rodriguez and husband Johnny of Odessa; three brothers, Ignacio Pinon and wife Elena, Jose “Pepe” Pinon and wife Lupe, Julio Pinon and wife Ramona, all from Chihuahua, Mexico; three sisters, Emma Guiterrez and husband Guillermo of Casas Grande, Chihuahua, Mexico, Edelmira Villargran and husband Rosario of Roswell, N.M., and Estefana Pinon of Chihuahua, Mexico; 29 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today at Odessa Funeral Home. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday Dec. 20, 2003, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Arturo Pestin officiating. Interment to follow at Rose Hill cemetery. Services by Odessa Funeral Home.

Z.L. ‘Dock’ Sharp

MIDLAND — Z.L. “Dock” Sharp, of Midland, passed away Thursday, Dec. 18, 2003.
He was born June 5, 1924, to W. W. Sharp and Ella Callan Sharp in Carlton, Texas, and was reared and educated there. After attending Tarleton State University, Dock served his country during World War II in the U.S. Navy. On June 16, 1946, he married Ramona Ellenburg in Abilene. Prior to his retirement Dock was with the University of Texas, Lands, for 37 years. His memberships included the International Right of Way, Andrews Lions Club and Armed Guard.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Dock is survived by his wife, Ramona Odetta Sharp of Midland; daughter, Nancy Jane Wright and her husband, Douglas, of Gainesville; granddaughter, Kaelyne Wright; sister, Marge White of Carlton; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services have been scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 20, 2003, at Ellis Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park. Arrangements are under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home, 801 Andrews Hwy., Midland, Texas.

Donny Culwell

MIDLAND — Donny Culwell, of Midland, passed away Sunday, Dec. 21, 2003.
He was born Jan. 20, 1969, to Rodger Culwell and Barbara Slaughter Culwell in Kermit. Donny grew up in Jal, N.M. where he graduated from high school. He attended ENMU in Portales, N.M. and Angelo State University in San Angelo. On Dec. 29, 1990, he married Candy Wallace in Eunice, N.M. Since December 1995, Donny had worked for Mayfield Paper Company in Odessa. His memberships included Sigma Alpha Epsilon, local Harley Owners Group and the National Harley Owners Group and Southside 109 Motorcycle Club.
Donny and Candy have made their home in Greenwood since August of 1998. Donny was a loving husband and father; he was devoted to all of his family and friends, never meeting a stranger. Donny touched so many lives and anyone who met him could not help but love him. He loved sports, especially football, he supported the Greenwood Rangers. Donny also helped coach his daughters in basketball and softball. One of the things that brought a lot of enjoyment to Donny’s life was riding his Harley alone or with his friends.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Ray Culwell.
Donny is survived by his wife of thirteen years, Candy Culwell; his children, Taylor and Mackenzie, all of Greenwood; parents, Rodger and Barbara Culwell of Midland; brother and sister-in-law, Jason and Amber Culwell of Odessa; paternal grandmother, Ima Culwell of Albuquerque, N.M.; maternal grandparents, Bob and Jean Slaughter of Kermit; great-grandmother, Jewel Neel of Waco; mother-in-law, Judy Watts of Eunice, N.M.; sisters-in-law, Tammy Anderson of Eunice, N.M.; Dina Sharp of Odessa; many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews and friends.
Funeral services have been scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, at Greenwood Baptist Church with the Rev. Wayman Swopes officiating. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park. Arrangements are under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home, 801 Andrews Hwy. Midland, Texas.
Pallbearers will be Jason Culwell, Rusty Crawford, Ed Hunt, Abel Sena, Lloyd Lovette, Mike Furry and Ron Welch.

Billy Jack Evans

MIDLAND — Billy Jack Evans was born on Nov. 26, 1932, in Coahoma. The family moved to Midland County early in 1933 where he and his twin brother Bobby Joe attended rural schools named Stokes and Courtney, later completing their high school education at Midland High School. Billy attended Texas A&M College at College Station, graduating in the spring of 1953 with an Agricultural degree in Range and Forestry and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Air Force. He was employed by the U.S.D.A. for one year as a range specialist and was assigned to Ft. Stockton. The following year he reported for two years of active duty for training at Lowry Air Force Base, Denver, as a Photo-Radar Intelligence Officer, and was assigned to Japan to complete his tour of duty. Following discharge from the Air Force Billy returned to his civilian job with the U.S.D.A. He later worked for the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs on the Papago Reservation located near Tucson, Arizona. A final move was a return to Midland to commence a 45 year farming and ranching occupation that extended to Reeves and Jeff Davis Counties in Texas and ranching in New Mexico and Colorado. He was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church, Midland.
Billy died on Monday, Dec. 22, 2003. He is survived by his wife, Gloria Ruth Anguish Evans of Midland; sons, Scott Evans and wife Kim and children Jenna and Tyler of Jeff Davis County, Kristen of Lubbock, Justin and Chad of Pecos; Paul Evans and wife Pam and children Adam and Blake of Stanton; Dusty Evans and wife Sandra and baby Courtney of Midland; daughters, Elaine Evans Shock and husband Billy and children Cam and wife Lissa, Sheriden, and Seth and wife Amber and babies Cassidye and Skye, all of Midland; Lori Evans Lucas and husband J.C. of Cincinnati. Also, sister Ida Robison of Midland and brother Bob Evans of Greenwood, as well as many aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews, and cousins.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Palmer and Louise Evans of Greenwood; son, Alan Lane Evans, and infant twin daughters, Sharon and Suzanne Evans.
Billy had many cherished friends and neighbors throughout his life. He was known to be fair and honest in his business endeavors and his favorite hobby was fishing.
Funeral services have been scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, at First Baptist Church of Midland with the Rev. Bob Hopkins officiating. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park. Arrangements are under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home, 801 Andrews Hwy. Midland, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to West Texas Rehab Center, Abilene, Texas, 79605, or Saint Andrews Presbyterian Mission, 1708 N. Fort Worth Street, Midland, Texas, 79701.

Ila Mae Hensley

ALTUS, Okla. — Ila Mae Hensley, 91, of Altus, died Monday, Dec. 22, 2003, at the Jackson County Memorial Hospital. Graveside services are scheduled for 3 p.m. Friday, Dec. 26, 2003, at Restlawn cemetery with the Rev. Frank Mitchell and Bill Osborne officiating. Services are under the direction of Kincannon Funeral Home.
Mrs. Hensley was born on Dec. 25, 1911, in Collin County, Texas to James T. and Jessie Spraggins. She graduated from Victory High School in Victory, Okla. She married Odell Hensley on Jan. 18, 1933 in Altus, Okla. She loved to watch and kept current with all types of sports especially football. She lovingly cared for her family and enjoyed cooking and sewing. Mrs. Hensley was a longtime member of the Olustee Church of Christ.
Mrs. Hensley was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Odell Hensley and two brothers, James S. and Bulas Spraggins.
Mrs. Hensley is survived by her daughter, Maydell Parker, Altus; one granddaughter, Tammye Mineo and her husband Doug, Odessa; two great-grandchildren, Christopher Odell Mineo of El Paso; Crystal Mineo of Dallas; and many friends.
The Hensley family will receive friends from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Friday in the Gathering Room at Kincannon Funeral Home.

Audrey Murphy

RANKIN — Audrey Murphy, of Rankin, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2003, at Midland Memorial Hospital.
She was born April 28, 1918, to Dayton Wright and Martha Mattie Ratliff in Miles and moved to Matador as a small child where she attended White Flat School. On June 17, 1933, she married Carter C. Murphy in White Flat. The couple moved to West Texas in 1939 living in Fort Stockton before moving to Rankin in 1949. Audrey worked for Johnson’s Department Store for 17 years when her children where growing up and still found time to be involved with their activities. She devoted her life to the Lord at age 12 and served as a godly example to her family and friends. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her great loves and filled her retirement years with happiness. Audrey always gave of her time freely no matter what the event. She was active in the Methodist Church, Hands Up For Rankin, helping less fortunate families and was taking food to people constantly. Her memberships included the Garden Club and the cemetery Association.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Carter C. Murphy, in 1984 and her son, Donald Carter Murphy, in 1963.
Audrey is survived by her daughters, Audrey Foster and her husband Larry, of Midland, and Martha Farris and her husband Jesse, of Odessa; grandchildren, Donna Jones and husband Steve, J.B. Farris and wife Mary, Clay Farris and wife Roni, Cheryl Cunningham and husband Tony, Darrel Farris and wife Brenda, Gregory Foster and wife Gina, Tracie Law and husband Jimmy, and Mike Murphy and wife Denise; 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services have been scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 26, 2003, at the First United Methodist Church in Rankin with the Rev. Stan Whites officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 10 a.m. until service time. Interment will follow at Rankin cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home, 801 Andrews Hwy., Midland, Texas.
Pallbearers will be Audrey’s grandsons, Steve Jones, J.B. Farris, Clay Farris, Tony Cunningham, Darrel Farris, Gregory Foster and Jimmy Law.
Memorial may be directed to First United Methodist Church, 811 Halff Street, Rankin, Texas, 79778.

Flora Demeris Clack Griffin

ODESSA — Flora Demeris Clack Griffin, 86, passed away Friday, Dec. 19, 2003, at Regency Hospital.
She was born Jan. 8, 1917, to Joseph C. and Emma Clack in Cisco, Texas.
Flora married Harvey Louis Griffin on March 27, 1941, in Breckenridge. They moved from Abilene to Odessa in 1953.
She was a past member of the Eastern Star, Women of the Moose and the American Legion Auxiliary. She loved to play golf and was a member of the Women’s Golf Association. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.
She enjoyed spending time with her family.
Survivors include her son,
Paul H. Griffin and wife Donna
of Odessa; granddaughter, Michelle Brown and husband Nick of Odessa; and several nieces and nephews.
Services are scheduled for 4 p.m. Monday, Dec. 22, 2003, at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Memorials can be made to the United Methodist Childrens Home in Waco, Texas.
Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

Verva ‘Marie’ Lewis

ODESSA — Verva “Marie” Lewis, age 87, of Odessa, died Friday, Dec. 19, 2003, at Parks Methodist Retirement Village in Odessa.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 22, 2003, in the Sunset Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Minister Burt Groves officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
She was born on July 19, 1916, in Holdenville, Okla., to John Kelly Shepherd and Lenore Ann Christi Shepherd. She lived in Oklahoma until the 1930s when she moved to work on a farm in Texas. There she met the love of her life Foy Paul Lewis. They were married on Oct. 1, 1934, in Welch, Texas. After retiring from the farm, they moved to Odessa where they lived together until his death on July 16, 1992. They had enjoyed 58 years of marriage together.
Marie worked in school cafeterias for 11 years and was a homemaker. Her most enjoyable time was spent at the Eisenhower Church of Christ where she enjoyed singing and worshiping. She was a member there for more than 20 years.
She is survived by her sons, Ernest L. Lewis and wife Sharrie of O’Fallon, Ill., and Chales Lewis and wife Bettie of Odessa; daughters, Wilene Wright and husband Jack of Odessa, Betty L. Lewis of Leesburg, Va., and Maralyn Butler and husband Allen of Ransom Canyon, Texas. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews; and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Foy Lewis; great-grandson, Joshua Ethan Clampitt; and by her brothers and sisters.
The family of Verva Marie Lewis will receive visitors at from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at Sunset Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Eisenhower Church of Christ.

Georgia May Woolsey

ODESSA — Georgia May Woolsey, 84, passed away Saturday, Dec. 20, 2003, at Medical Center Hospital.
She was born May 5, 1919, in Comanche County, Texas, to Willis and Islah Hasley.
She married Thed Woolsey Dec. 1, 1937, in Comanche. He preceded her in death in 1995.
They moved to Odessa in 1951. She worked as a sales clerk for TG&Y Stores. She retired as a sales clerk from the Model Shop.
She is survived by her daughter, Juanice Windham; sisters, Belva Sims, and Mary Wilkins, all of Odessa; granddaughters, LaDawn Spring and husband Glen of Odessa and Rhonda Mann and husband Ron of Nacogdoches, Texas; great-grandson, Justin Smith, of Nacogdoches.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Home Hospice of Odessa in memory of our beloved mother and grandmother.
Graveside services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 22, 2003, at Sunset Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. Jimmy Braswell officiating.
Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

Jo Ann Bowman

ODESSA — Jo Ann Bowman, 78, of Odessa, passed away Monday, Dec. 1, 2003, in the Lois Owens Personal Care Home. She was born Dec. 2, 1924 in Noblesville, Ind. She married Ralph Bowman Jr. June 12, 1947, in Noblesville. She was a registered nurse. She was a member of the Clock Club, Odessa Country Club, the First Christian Church and the Elderberries Class. She supported the Midland-Odessa Symphony and Chorale, the Permian Playhouse, the Art Institute of the Permian Basin and the Crystal Ball Foundation, as well as other worthwhile community efforts.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Ralph Bowman Jr. in 1995.
She is survived by her sons, Gary Bowman and wife Lynda of Dallas, Robert Bowman of Odessa, Bruce Bowman and wife Leslie of Georgetown, Texas (formerly of Midland); daughters, Janice Spurgin and husband Steve of Denton, Becky Mayes and husband Keith of Round Rock; and fourteen grandchildren, Jeremy, Lara, Zachary, Amber, Daniel, Ashley, Eric, Christopher, Stephen and Chesna Bowman, Kevin and Michael Spurgin, Aaron and Rachel Mayes. She also leaves behind many treasured friends in the Odessa area, as well as in Noblesville.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, at First Christian Church with Dr. David Mindel officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
The family would like to especially thank the staff at Lois Owens Personal Care Home.
The family suggests Memorials be made to Home Hospice of Odessa or your favorite charity.
