Ray Fleeman
ODESSA — Services for Tommie Ray “Pop Ray” Fleeman, 82, of Odessa, are scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003, at Highland United Methodist Church with Dr. Mark Scott and David Weyant officiating. Masonic Graveside Services will be 2 p.m. at Trinity Memorial Park in Big Spring.
Ray died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003, at Medical Center Hospital with his family by his side. He was born June 8, 1921, in Dallas to Thomas and Mary Fleeman. He was the youngest of four children. He attended college at the University of Texas until he joined the Navy in 1943. Ray was a member of the “Black Cat Squadron” and flew a PBY, which flew patrols and rescued downed pilots in the Pacific Ocean.
Ray married
Helen Louise O’Daniel on Nov. 11, 1950. They had three children. He worked for Mid Continent Supply for many years and also worked on the family ranches before he co-founded Metering and Testing Services Co. He later became owner and was active in the business until his death. He was a 32nd degree Mason in the McFarland Masonic Lodge. He was a member of Highland United Methodist Church where he often taught Sunday School in the Bob Hamilton Class.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Mac, and his wife, Louise, of 42 years.
Survivors include his sisters, Elouise Morrison and Remona Martin, who will soon celebrate her 101st birthday; son, Daniel Ray Fleeman and wife Tammy, their sons Shane and Kevin; daughter, Carole Howard and John Crumley and her daughters, Shannon and Amanda; daughter, Nancy Donovan and husband, Dennis and their children, Tricia, Adam, Brandon, and DeAnna. In addition to eight grandchildren, he had three great-grandchildren and many friends.

Rosa Lopez Leyva
ODESSA — Rosa Lopez Leyva, 53, of Odessa, passed away Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003 at Medical Center Hospital. She was born April 6, 1950, in Terrell, Texas to Ramiro and Alejandra Lopez. Rosa was a hairdresser by trade for 20 years, while raising two boys on her own. Her sons were her life. After becoming unable to do hair anymore, she decided to go back to school where she was majoring in Criminal Justice. She was a strong and hard-willed person yet was a very loving mother and grandmother. In spite of her 34-year battle with diabetes, organ transplants, and a heart condition, she was always the first one there for other people’s needs. But, in short, that is who Rosa Leyva is, was, and always will be!
Rosa is survived by her sons, Javier and Isaac Leyva; her daughters-in-law, Yolanda and Patricia Leyva; grandchildren, Avyel R., Abigail Rose, Ramz X., Mikaela Lily, Ambri D., and Isaac Abraham Leyva; her parents, Ramiro and Alejandra Lopez; sister, Lisa Baeza; and her brothers, Gilbert and Jesse Lopez.
Services will be held at the Sunset Memorial Funeral Home Chapel Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Harvey Enriquez officiating. Services are entrusted to Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.
Estelle Middleton
MIDLAND — Estelle Middleton, 90, of Lubbock, died Nov. 29, 2003, in Lubbock. She was born Oct. 26, 1913, in Hillsboro. She graduated from the University of Texas in August 1937 with a master’s degree in elementary education and began her teaching career Aqualla. She pioneered the bilingual program in the Ector County Independent School District. She retired from ECISD at Gale Pond Elementary (Alamo) in 1972.
In 1971 she was the ECISD Nominee for Texas Teacher of the year, and sixth in the state.
Memberships included the Texas State Teachers Association, American Association of University Women, Order of the Eastern Star, Friendship Chapter No. 1008, a founding member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society, and a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Odessa. After moving to Lubbock in 1997, she became a member of the Rachel class at First Baptist of Lubbock.
She was a devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother who had a passion for education and continued to teach life lessons through her ninety years of life.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the Delta Kappa Gamma Society, 4902 84th St., Lubbock, Texas.
She is survived by her daughters, Jane Tarver and husband, Dan of Lubbock, Kathy Kirkpatrick and husband, Alvin of Greeley, Colo.; brother, H. Dean Crow Jr. of Odessa; grandchildren, John Zachery Tarver, John Robert Burnett, Cynthia Elizabeth Tarver; and great-grandchild, Zander James Tarver.
Her celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003, graveside at Resthaven cemetery in Midland with the Rev. Clydel Chapman officiating.
Natalia Abalos Sandoval
CRANE — God looked out in His garden and noticed a flower was still missing from His garden. So He chose our Nana to replace the missing flower. She was called to heaven to end her pain and suffering. She will be missed, but we are thankful that she is now with our Heavenly Father.
Natalia Abalos Sandoval, 70 of Crane, passed away on Saturday, November 29, 2003 after a short illness, at Odessa Medical Center.
She was born on August 31, 1933 in Rankin, Texas to Selso and Juanita Abalos. She married
Juan Sandoval on August 10, 1952 in Rankin. She was a member of the Good Shepherd Catholic Church.
She was our father’s wife, our mother, our grandmother, MacKinzie’s great grandmother, and our “Nana.”
She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Juan Sandoval of Crane; son, Russell Sandoval and wife Terri of Crane; daughters, Janie Prieto and husband Robert of Odessa and Chris Payan and husband Sammy of Crane; grandchildren, Stefani Johnson and husband Michael of Odessa, Tracie and Stacy Payan of Crane, and Jeffery, Amanda and Juan Sandoval of Crane; and one great-grandchild, MacKinzie Johnson of Odessa; three brothers, Frank Abalos and Brijido Esparza of Rankin, Andres Abalos of Robston; two sisters, Josie Mata of Odessa and Lola Watson of Rankin.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Selso and Juanita Abalos of Rankin; sisters, Micaela Haro of Colorado City, Nettie Pulido of Rankin and Lupe Barrandey of McCamey; brothers, Henry Abalos of Odessa and Rito Abalos of Rankin.
Pallbearers will be Michael Johnson, Jeffery Sandoval, Juan Sandoval, Brandon Watson, Larry Abalos and Selso Mata.

Burial will follow in the Crane County cemetery with arrangements with Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home.
Ira Elton Bownds
ODESSA — Ira Elton Bownds, 76, passed away Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003, at Medical Center Hospital.
He was born June 4, 1927, to Ira C. and Mattie Bownds in Tahoka, Texas.
His parents preceded him in death.
He moved to Odessa in 1937, later marrying Bessie Rudder on Aug. 8, 1945, in Lamesa. He was a devoted husband, loving father and faithful friend.
He served in the U.S. Army from October 1945 until July 1946.
He later worked for and retired from Adco Services as a co-owner and saleman. He was also a member of the American Legion, and the First Church of God.
Survivors include his wife, Bessie Bownds of Odessa; son, Jimmy Bownds of Dallas; daughters, Gwen Brumm of Tow, Texas, and Barbara Woodard and Karen Thornhill, both of Odessa; brothers, Edward Bownds of Whitney, Texas, and Doyle Bownds of Odessa; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. today at the First Church of God with Malcolm Tyree and Paul Jones officiating.
Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

James Cornelius Cobb
James Cornelius Cobb, 77, of Odessa, passed away Friday, Dec. 26, 2003 at Medical Center Hospital.
He was born Jan. 17, 1925, in Haskell County. He served in the U.S. Army. He was a retired cotton ginner.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Lillian Cobb and brother, J.W. Cobb.
He is survived by his son, Nicky Cobb of Abilene; daughters, Carolyn Campbell and Linda Hudspeth, both of Odessa; three grandchildren, Chuck Hudspeth and Paula Tealer of Odessa and Beva Henson of Diana; three great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services are pending in Rochester with Smith Funeral Home.
Mr. Cobb will lie in state at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home until 9 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003.
Lillian DeWees
ODESSA — Lillian DeWees known as “Bea” to her family and friends, passed away on Dec. 22, 2003, at Deerings Nursing Center. She was born on June, 1 1914, in Zurich, Kan. She married
Richard Hugh DeWees in 1936 in Topeka, Kan. She was preceded in death by her husband and granddaughter, Aubrey Lynn Howell.
Bea is survived by her son, Ronald DeWees of California; daughters, Cecilia Howell of Midland and Virginia Wagner of Moody; grandchildren, Johnny Howell, Debra Elmer, Steven DeWees, Brad DeWees, James Wagner, Bruce Wagner and Mary Wagner; great-grandchildren, Jasmine Wagner, Regan Cappella, Tucker Cappella, Jaime DeWees and Samantha DeWees; and nieces, Marietta Kamas and Kathleen Hilgers.

Maria Fierro
ODESSA — Maria Fierro, 80 years of age, passed away on Dec. 25, 2003, at her Odessa residence. She was born on Aug. 26, 1923, in San Diego, Texas. Maria was preceded in death by her husband Toribio Fierro.
She is survived by her children, Lucy Hopkins of Odessa, Sabas Fierro and wife Elfida of Odessa, Rosie Cortez and husband Bruno Jr. of Odessa, Jimmy Orosco of Fort Stockton, Minnie Kikuchi and husband Martin of Odessa, Juan Fierro and wife Teresa of Odessa, Mary Lou Merrill and husband Jack Sr. of Big Spring; brother; Robert Delgado and wife Petra of Andrews; sister, Estella Arismendez of Shafter, Calif.; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
A rosary will be recited on Sunday at 7 p.m. at Odessa Funeral Home Chapel. Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Monday Dec. 29, 2003, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Francis Frey officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill cemetery. Couts Monroe Garland
PARKER COUNTY — Couts Monroe Garland, 91, of Midland, passed away peacefully on Monday, Dec. 15, 2003, in a Big Spring care facility. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 20, 2003, at Authon cemetery in Parker County.
Couts Garland was born Oct. 16, 1912, in the Garland Bend of the Brazos River, Palo Pinto County, Texas, to Washington Lafayette Garland and Mattie Belle Darnell Garland.
Couts’ father came to Texas from the Carolinas via Arkansas in the 1860s. He bought land and ranched in Palo Pinto County along the Brazos River. Couts attended schools in Palo Pinto County. He married
Maudine Taylor in Marietta, Okla., on April 5, 1934.
He was a member of the Church of Christ. Couts was employed as a roustabout and as a switcher in the Yates field around Iraan for the Ohio Oil Co., and later as a pumper for Texaco at Notrees, Texas, until his retirement. He worked at the Consolidated Vultee Aircraft Plant in Fort Worth during World War II. For the better part of his life, Couts raised cattle and chickens and was known for his homegrown tomatoes. He played the harmonica by ear and was a good dancer. As a young man, he excelled in track and played on the baseball teams for the oil companies where he worked. He enjoyed trotline fishing and traveling.
Couts is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Beverly Garland Burkes and Jack Burkes of Midland; his son, Pat Monroe Garland of El Paso; sister, Mayme George Hill Wenigar of Azusa, Calif.; two grandsons and their wives, K. Todd and Judy Burkes of Spring, Texas, and Terry C. and Kelli Burkes of Midland; two granddaughters, Stephanie K. Garland Ruby of Buda and Melanie Garland Baize of El Paso; 10 great-grandchildren, Jonathan and William Burkes of Midland, Kathleen, Kristen and Kolten Burkes of Spring, April Howell, Tiffany Jameson of Washington, D.C., Sean Sipes of Buda and Wade and Paige Baize of El Paso; one great-great-granddaughter, Devon; and many dear nieces and nephews.
Couts Garland was preceded in death by his wife, Maudine Taylor Garland in 1998; his father in 1918; his mother in 1964; a grandson, Pat Monroe Garland Jr. in 1984; a brother, Ollie Lee Garland in 1996; a sister, Cordie Rex Garland Dick in 1994; eight half-brothers, George Armenius Garland, John Ernest (Bud) Garland, William L. Garland, Jesse Lee Garland, Matthew Arnold Garland, Grover Cleveland Garland, Robert Ross Garland and Jackson (Jack) Garland.

Earl L. ‘Cotton’ McBee
MIDLAND — Earl L. “Cotton” McBee, of Midland, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2003.
He was born Aug. 26, 1928, in Eastland and was raised and educated in McCamey and Wink, graduating from high school in Wink. In 1948, he married
Shirley Louise Peebles in Monahans. He was employed for 39 years with Exxon Co., USA, now ExxonMobil, in various supervisory and technical positions at sites in West Texas, New Mexico and California. At the time of his retirement in 1986, he was an Operations Superintendent in the Andrews District.
Cotton is survived by his wife of 56 years, Shirley McBee of Midland; daughter, Peggy Bassett and husband, Ken, of Reno, Nev.; son, Jimmy McBee and wife, Denisa, of Seminole; daughter, Carol McBee of Midland; son, Ronnie McBee and wife, Ann, of Big Piney, Wyo.; three granddaughters, Brandy Bassett of Austin; Kristan McBee of Norfolk, Va.; Allison McBee of Dallas; three grandsons, Justin McBee of Big Piney, Wyo.; Tyler Reynolds of Midland; Austin McBee of Seminole; and four great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at Ellis Funeral Home today between the hours of 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.
Funeral services have been scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 19, 2003, at Ellis Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bob Porterfield officiating. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. at Winkler County cemetery in Kermit. Arrangements are under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home, 801 Andrews Hwy., Midland, Texas.
