Audrey Murphy
RANKIN — Audrey Murphy, of Rankin, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2003, at Midland Memorial Hospital.
She was born April 28, 1918, to Dayton Wright and Martha Mattie Ratliff in Miles and moved to Matador as a small child where she attended White Flat School. On June 17, 1933, she married
Carter C. Murphy in White Flat. The couple moved to West Texas in 1939 living in Fort Stockton before moving to Rankin in 1949. Audrey worked for Johnson’s Department Store for 17 years when her children where growing up and still found time to be involved with their activities. She devoted her life to the Lord at age 12 and served as a godly example to her family and friends. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her great loves and filled her retirement years with happiness. Audrey always gave of her time freely no matter what the event. She was active in the Methodist Church, Hands Up For Rankin, helping less fortunate families and was taking food to people constantly. Her memberships included the Garden Club and the cemetery Association.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Carter C. Murphy, in 1984 and her son, Donald Carter Murphy, in 1963.
Audrey is survived by her daughters, Audrey Foster and her husband Larry, of Midland, and Martha Farris and her husband Jesse, of Odessa; grandchildren, Donna Jones and husband Steve, J.B. Farris and wife Mary, Clay Farris and wife Roni, Cheryl Cunningham and husband Tony, Darrel Farris and wife Brenda, Gregory Foster and wife Gina, Tracie Law and husband Jimmy, and Mike Murphy and wife Denise; 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services have been scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 26, 2003, at the First United Methodist Church in Rankin with the Rev. Stan Whites officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 10 a.m. until service time. Interment will follow at Rankin cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home, 801 Andrews Hwy., Midland, Texas.
Pallbearers will be Audrey’s grandsons, Steve Jones, J.B. Farris, Clay Farris, Tony Cunningham, Darrel Farris, Gregory Foster and Jimmy Law.

John M. Campbell
ODESSA — John M, Campbell, 82 years of age, passed away Thursday, Jan. 22, 2004, at his Odessa residence.
He was born June 3, 1921, in Lipan, Texas, to Carl and Abby Campbell.
He married
Margaret Jacoby on Dec. 21, 1942. They settled with their family in Odessa in 1956. He went to work for H.G. Courts Construction Company later known as South Texas Construction, retiring in 1988 as Vice President and General Manager.
Better known to his family as “Pappy, ” he always had a special bond with all his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He loved to fish, hunt and tinker in his shop.
He was married
for 61 years to the love of his life and his best friend. He was a Godly man, living an exemplary life to all he touched. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret Campbell of Odessa; sons, John W. Campbell and wife Maudie of Odessa, Carl W. Campbell and wife Val of Waxahachie and Richard D. Campbell and wife Anita of Odessa; daughters, Carolyn R. Davis and husband Arthur of Midland, Fay Dunn of Odessa and Betty Earls of Odessa; brother, R.D. Campbell of Lipan; sister, Freddie M. Smethers of Lipan; 14 grandchildren, Greg, Anthony, Doug, Rebecca, Lori, Cindy, Jessica, McKaylie, Christopher, Caitlin, Jenne, Ami, Mitchell and Morgan; and six great-grandchildren.
Visitation will continue today at Odessa Funeral Home.
Funeral services have been set for 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 26, 2004, at Faith Tabernacle, 1420 E. 42nd St., with the Rev. Scott Sprouse officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Greg Davis, Anthony Davis, Doug Campbell, Mitchell Campbell, Rich Earls and Christopher Campbell.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorials to the Faith Tabernacle building fund at 1420 E. 42nd St., 79762.

Bonnie B. McEver
ODESSA — Bonnie B. McEver, 81, a longtime resident of Odessa, passed away Friday, Jan. 23, 2004, at Medical Center Hospital.
She was born March 18, 1922, in Breckenridge. She retired from Texas Instruments after 16 years of service. She was a former charter member of the Eagles Lodge.
She is survived by her son, David L. McEver of McAllen; brother, Jack Sandlin of Odessa; six grandchildren, Kelly Dugan, James Wayne Taylor, Ebony Taylor, Mac Taylor, David McEver and Gary McEver; three great-grandchildren, Brian Goolsby, Emily Dugan and Trey Taylor; and one great-great-granddaughter, Brooklyn Michele Taylor.
She married
Harlis Melton McEver on June 6, 1940, in Sweetwater.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harlis McEver; daughter, Carolyn Taylor; and sister, Rosie Wilson.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 26, 2004, at at Sunset Memorial Garden with the Rev. Jack Watkins officiating.

Billy John ‘BJ’ Sims
ODESSA — Billy John “BJ” Sims, loving husband, father and PaPa, passed away Saturday, Jan. 24, 2004, at Hospice House in Odessa at the age of 80.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 27, at the Sunset Memorial Chapel with the Rev. David Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
He was born Jan. 21, 1923, in Brownfield, Texas, to Lewis and Ruby Dobson Sims.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. He was a dedicated lifetime member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, serving as grand worthy president, state aerie president, and local aerie president. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion and VFW.
He is survived by his children, Mary Pat Sims of Baton Rouge, La., Larry L. Price Sr. and wife Judy, John L. Price and wife JoAnn and Janice A. Price and husband Neal; daughter-in-law, Shirley Price; sister, Ruth Cook of Amarillo; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers; seven sisters; one daughter, Marsha Lynn Sims; one son, Joe G. Price; and one great-granddaughter, Casey Price.

Lois Wear
ODESSA — Lois Wear, age 84 of Andrews, passed away Thursday, Jan. 22, 2004, at Hospice House in Odessa.
She was born Oct. 6, 1919, in Madill, Okla., to Silas James Warnick and Ida Bell Husky Warnick.
Lois married
Thomas Presley Wear on Jan. 18, 1941, in Ramonville, Texas. He preceded her in death June 11, 1965.
She was Baptist and had been a resident of Andrews since 1985. Lois retired from the City of Odessa, where she was employed for many years.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Evelyn Lois Wear; two brothers, P.W. Warnick and Joe B. Warnick; and one sister, Aline Kilgore.
Surviving her are her nephew, Richard Warnick and wife Nora of Andrews; and one niece, Jo Ann Branch, also of Andrews.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 26, 2004, in the Kermit cemetery with Chaplain Don Swindell officiating.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Cooper Funeral Chapel of Kermit.
James ‘Jim’ Box
AUSTIN — James L. ‘Jim’ Box, 85, died peacefully in his sleep Friday, Feb. 20, 2004, and went home to Glory to be with our Lord.
Jim was born on June 4, 1914, in the small town of Wichita Falls, Texas, to James Amos and Hattie Cooley Box.
Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Ramona Lucille ‘Luci’ Jordan Box, of 62 years and his eldest daughter, Mona Bourke.
Jim is survived by his daughter, Deidra Tyler and husband, Jack, of Austin; Kristy Artz and husband, Warren, of Australia, Lisa Coscla and husband, Matt, and their children, Berkley and Emory, of Coppell, Texas, and Trisha Bourke of Edmond, Okla.

Paul T. Bullock
ODESSA — Paul T. Bullock, 79, of Odessa, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2004, at Medical Center Hospital. He was born Feb. 21, 1925, in Holliday, Texas, to Walter and Eunice Bullock.
He married
Alta Smith-Harris June 11, 1984, in Midland. Mr. Bullock, a resident of West Texas for over 50 years, was a well-respected printer and manager for West Texas Office Supply in Midland, which later became Starline Printing. After retiring from Starline in 1985, Paul enjoyed fishing, painting, reading and playing with his pet schnauzer, CeCe. He was also an Air Force veteran who served in the Pacific Theater during World War II.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Jo Earle.
He is survived by his wife, Alta Bullock of Odessa; sons, Jimmy Ray Bullock of St. Augustine, Fla., Joe Doyle Bullock of Lubbock; stepsons, Bennie Boyles of Wendell, N.C., Don Boyles of Arlington, daughter, Jerree Vardell of Cedar Creek; sister, Billie Jean Nolan of Altadena, Calif.; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
It was Paul’s wish that his body be donated to Texas Tech School of Medicine. Donations may be made to the American Heart Association and American Cancer Research in lieu of flowers.
Visitation will be 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 27, 2004, at Hubbard-Kelly funeral Home.

Harry W. Carpenter
ALPINE — Harry W. Carpenter, 90, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2004, at his home following a lengthy illness.
Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, 2004, at Elm Grove cemetery in Alpine, Texas.
Mr. Carpenter was born Oct. 3, 1913, in Belton, Texas. In 1936, he met and married
Charlcie Henderson of Austin, Texas. In 1942, he, his wife and daughter, Harriet, moved to El Paso, Texas, with the Internal Revenue Service. He was later assigned to Alpine in 1944 as the first revenue agent in the area. His passion for Alpine and the area caused Harry to resign from the Revenue Service and he opened a Public Accounting Service and opened Carpenter Real Estate, which is now one of three oldest family operated businesses in Alpine today.
Harry was a member of the First United Methodist Church, mason in the Alpine Masonic Lodge, founder and lifetime member of the Sul Ross State University Century Club, past member and director of the Alpine Chamber of Commerce and very active in civic leadership and fund-raising in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. In 1952, he acquired 150 acres from H.L. Kokernot and began developing what is now known as the Carpenter Addition.
Harry’s family always came first with his leisure time being spent with his family members on fishing and hunting trips or at home.
Harry is preceded in death by his wife, Charlcie Carpenter; his parents, Joe and Lena Carpenter; two sisters, Eda Mae Poteet and Helen White; three brothers, Joe Carpenter, Kyle Carpenter and Wayne Carpenter.
Survivors include one daughter, Harriet Krhut of Monahans, Texas; one son, John Carpenter of Alpine, Texas; six granddaughters, Kandle Krhut, Crystal Pena, Vicki Kutscherousky, Kelly Hendricks, Tera Carpenter and Celeste Carpenter; and four great-grandchildren, Braxton, Colton, Shawn and Justin.
Memorials may be made to the Sul Ross State University Century Club, Sul Ross State University, Alpine, TX, 79830 or to a favorite charity.
Honorary pallbearers were: Ronny William, Bob Stovall, Johnny Weyerts, Mike Pena, Gerald Kutscherousky, Robert Bowden, Gunther Moller, King Terry Jr., Jack Perryman, Red Patillo, Ken Novak, David Moore, Clegg Fowlkes and DeWitt Alsup.
Lala Fern Gannaway
ROTAN — Lala Fern Gannaway, 93, died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2004, in the Rotan Healthcare Center.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, 2004, at the First Baptist Church of Rotan with Brother Werth Mayes and Brother Corkey Wells officiating. Directed by Weathersbee-Ray Funeral Home.
Born August 17, 1910, in Breckenridge, Texas, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Beulah (Stoker) Branch. Lala attended Hardin Simmons University for one year. She married
George Gannaway on August 18, 1932, in Oklahoma. Lala worked inside the home and stayed very busy in organizations such as the Federated Music Club, Girl Scouts and was involved with the Wednesday Study Club. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Rotan. Lala was preceded in death by her husband, four brothers and two sisters.
Survivors include one daughter, Regina Hawkins of Rotan; one sister, Martha Frances Bullock of Breckenridge; four grandchildren, Lorelei Hawkins of Houston, Robert Lloyd Hawkins and his wife, Robin, of Monahans, Lala Georgene Kaul and her husband, Wyatt, of Katy and George Edward Branch; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 27, 2004, at Weathersbee-Ray Funeral Home.
