Ester Mae Aust

ODESSA — Ester Mae Aust, 84, went to be with her Lord on Wednesday morning, March 24, 2004. She was born in Alma, Ark., March 6, 1920, to Henry and Cora Owen. She married William Wiley Aust on July 9, 1938, and moved to Odessa in the summer of 1949. Together they were blessed with five lovely children.
She was employed by E.C.I.S.D for 14 years retiring in 1982. She taught Sunday School for twenty-two years at the First United Pentecostal Church, Odessa, Texas. She also taught home Bible studies, was Ladies Auxiliary President, served as Prayer Group leader, Girls Prayer Band leader, hostess and also a member of the Golden Heirs Choir at her church of 55 years.
Ester was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, two sisters and one son-in-law.
Ester leaves on this earth her husband of 65 years, William Wiley Aust of Odessa; two sons, Eldon Aust of Odessa and Darry Leon Aust and wife, Kathy, of Saugus, Calif.; three daughters, Barbara Jean Ross and husband, Gaylord, of Arlington, Carolyn Johnston and husband, Leon, of Houston and Delores Bedford and husband, Jim, of Farmington, N.M. She also leaves behind 19 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and 13 step-grandchildren. She also is survived by a sister, Ida Bell Nixon of Lodi, Calif.; brother, Charles Richard Owen of Ridgecrest, Calif.; and one sister-in-law, Leta Mae Parrish of Odessa; a host of nieces, nephews, a large Church family and many friends.
The family will receive friends at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, March 26, 2004. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 27, 2004 at her home church, First United Pentecostal Church of Odessa, with Pastors J. T. Pugh and Terry Pugh officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons.
Ester left a lasting impression on every one who knew her. Her closest friend was Jesus and He called her home. She fought a good fight, she kept the faith and she has entered into the joy of her Lord. She will be greatly missed by all.
Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

Terri ‘Jo-Gal’ Cooper Powell

ODESSA — Terri “Jo-Gal” Cooper Powell passed away Saturday, March 20, 2004, at the age of 36 after a lifelong battle with the Sickle Cell Anemia.
A devoted and loving mother, she is survived by her only child and daughter, J’Trena Cooper-Petit, 15. She was the daughter of John and Sue Powell. Other survivors include her brothers and sisters, Terry Powell of Odessa, Gary Powell of Midland, John G. Brooks of Odessa, John Williams of Midland, Le’Jon Williams of Apache Junction, Ariz., Johnathan Sapp of Odessa, Booker Anderson Powell of Bryant, Jorney Powell of Bryant, Temesha Dorsey of Odessa, Connie Powell of Fort Worth, Calandra Powell of Fort Worth, Christopher Cooper of Odessa and Columbus Cooper of Odessa.
Services will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at Martinez Funeral Home.
Correspondences may be forwarded to 2824 S. Mara Posa, Apache Junction, AZ 85220.
She will be missed and remembered with love by all whose lives she touched.

John D. Marshall

SHREVEPORT, La. — John D. Marshall was born January 29, 1934, to the late Leo and Isabell Marshall in Kingfisher, Okla. He entered into rest Wednesday, March 24, 2004, in Shreveport, La.
Funeral services will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 26, 2004, at Rose-Neath’s Southside Chapel. Officiating will be the Rev. Clarence Chism. Interment will follow in Elmwood cemetery, Abilene, Texas, at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 27, 2004.
The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 26, 2004, at the funeral home.
Mr. Marshall was preceded in death by his first wife, Bobbie Jean Marshall.
He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Betty Jean Rylander Marshall; sons, Donald Steven Marshall and wife, Jodi, John Stanley “Bo” Marshall; daughter, Lisa Carol Clift and husband, Bill; stepsons, Douglas Calvin Haynes, Michael Gene Haynes; sisters, Donna Marie Byrum, Martha Bell Jester, Betty Ann Kennedy; brothers, Pete Marshall, Jim Marshall; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Gonzala Romero Nieto

ODESSA — Gonzala Romero Nieto, 68, died Monday, March 23, 2004, at her residence in Bakersfield, Calif. Mrs. Nieto was a Catholic and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. She was born January 11, 1936, in San Antonio Del Bravo, Chihuahua, Mexico, to father, Alberto Romero, and Timotea Velasquez who both precede her in death.
Rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, March 26, 2004, at Martinez Funeral Home. Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 27, 2004, at St. Anthony Catholic Church with Father Joe Uecker officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Survivors include two daughters, Martha Martinez and husband, Miguel, and Gloria Mendoza, both of Bakersfield, Calif.; three sons, Tomas Mendoza and wife, Wilda, Paul Mendoza and wife, Shellie, Hector Nieto and wife, Melissa, all of Odessa; three sisters, Marcela Rivas and Paula Tijerina, both of Midland, Texas, and Patricia Ruiz of Kalamazoo, Mich.; five brothers, Fermin Romero, Manuel Romero, Isa Mendoza and Jose Mendoza, all of Midland, and Domingo Romero of Denton, Texas; 16 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Jessie Melendez, Micky Rivas, David Romero, Jimmy Romero, Sammy Romero, Manuel Romero Jr. Honorary pallbearers will be Demetrio Rivas Jr. and Jose Cruz Iglesias.
Services are under the direction of Martinez Funeral Home.

Albert W. Dale Jr.

ODESSA — Albert W. Dale Jr., 81, an Odessa resident since 1959, passed away Saturday, April 3, 2004, at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa, Texas. Albert Dale Jr. was born in Falfurrias, Texas, on March 31, 1923, the first child of Leota and Albert Dale.
Albert Dale served in the Navy as a Chief Petty Officer. He was seasoned by World War II and the Korean Conflict and received his education from the “school of hard knocks.”
In April 1941, he joined the Navy and flew escort patrols in South America monitoring enemy submarine movement to Africa. Two years later, he was transferred to England and was attached to a Norwegian squadron that monitored the German shipments along the Fjords of Norway. At 20 years of age, he was promoted to Chief Petty Officer in the Navy. Albert was discharged from the Navy in 1946, but was recalled to service in 1951 during the Korean Conflict to fly “surveillance” missions off the coast of China.
In 1953, he moved his family to Pecos, Texas, to start his life adventure in the private sector. Albert’s insatiable curiosity and determination to succeed were the core ingredients that propelled him to success in the communication industry during the next 40 years.
In 1960, Albert expanded his business, Industrial Communications, and opened a new office in Odessa, Texas. In Odessa, his business success continued and he accepted new responsibilities as a civic leader. Albert’s leadership abilities were apparent to anyone who worked for him. Albert was a leader who led by example. If there was a cause to support that would benefit the city of Odessa, he was the first person to volunteer.
He is a past president of the Optimist Club, past president of the Telephone Answering Service Association of Texas, a fund-raiser for the YMCA and the Permian Playhouse, a past nominee of the Friends of the Art award, a deacon and elder at St. Paul Presbyterian Church and a board member of the Presbyterian School of Pan American in Kingsville, Texas.
Albert loved life, family and friends. He had a contagious “happy face” smile, a loving spirit anchored by his religious faith and a warmth of soul that touched the heart of anyone who met him. He had no enemies. Albert Dale worked hard his whole life to make this world a better place for all of us. He will be missed, but his spirit will always be with us. The ascension of his soul is complete. He has begun a new life with a new beginning with Jesus Christ, his Lord and Savior.
Military graveside services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 6, 2004, at Sunset Memorial Gardens with Steve Deines and Nora Fitch officiating. A Celebration of Life will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 7, 2004, at First Presbyterian Church.
Pallbearers are Munro Shintani, Charlie Taylor, Charles Perry, Charles Wood, Bryan Henderson, Eugene Martin and Paul Tittle.
If desired, memorials may be made to the Odessa Optimist Club Scholarship Fund or to the Presbyterian School of Pan American in Kingsville, Texas.
Albert was preceded in death by his mother and father. Albert is survived by the love of his life, his wife, Betty Dale of Odessa; son, Billy Dale of Mineola, Texas; grandchildren, Sarah Dale of Lubbock, Texas; and Bradley Dale of Lewisville, Texas; his brother, John Dale of Houston, Texas; sister, Elizabeth Tarr of Harlingen, Texas; his brother-in-law, Pete Donohoe and wife, Vicki, of Mineola, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

James Edgar Dunn

ODESSA — James Edgar Dunn of Odessa was born on January 21, 1921, in Freeport, Texas, to James Arlee Dunn and Martha Elizabeth Gibson Dunn and left this earth to be with them on Saturday, April 3, 2004. James and his wife of 60 years resided at the Parks Methodist retirement village.
He is survived by his wife, twin sons, Ronnie J. Dunn and wife, Anne-marie, of Odessa, Rennie J. Dunn and his wife, Elizabeth, of Austin, Texas; daughter, Robinette Marks and husband, Jack, of Bartlett, Tenn.; five grandchildren, Cammie and Cole Barton of Austin, Daniel and Jessica Marks of Cordova, Tenn., Jeffery and Rachel Marks of Memphis, Tenn., Paxton and Jennifer Dunn of Dallas and Gentry Dunn of Odessa; three great-grandchildren, Trey Barton of Austin and Victoria and Katrina Marks of Memphis, Tenn.
James was one of nine children: one sister deceased, Julia Howard of Post; sisters, Faye Hunter of Abilene, Joann McClelland and husband, Charles, of Abilene, Ruby Box of Dallas, Sonya Adams and husband, Ken, of Dallas; brothers, Robert Dunn and wife, Pat, of Brownwood, J.D. Dunn of Denton and Dewey Dunn and wife, June, of Lake Granbury.
He is also survived by a whole host of nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and many friends.
He served his country in the U.S. Air Force from 1942 to 1947 in the South Pacific, spending time in the Philippines and the Fiji Islands. In 1947, he and his wife, Mary, came to west Texas to seek their fortune. He first worked for the Banner Ice Cream Company and then went to work for the Del-Tex Candy Company. In 1960, Col. Fitzgerald, Claude Dooley and James Dunn founded Odessa’s Most Unusual Store, “Strike It Rich, Inc.” It was the first successful discount store in Odessa. It was noted for having everything you would need to survive. He was noted for his high moral standards, strength of character and honesty. He had been retired since the business sold in the late 1970s. He and his wife, Mary, retired in San Angelo where he enjoyed and loved entertaining all his family.
He was noted for making large amounts of Christmas candy and sending it to all his friends and relatives. He was an accomplished cook and supplied all his grandchildren with his famous “Monster Cookies.”
Papa truly loved his entire family and never met a stranger. He also enjoyed entertaining his in-laws, the Robinett family; Robert and Maggie Robinett of Santa Anna, Texas, Bill and Donna Robinett of Brady, Jim and Jean of Chimney Rock, Colo., and Maurine Griffin of Austin.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 7, at the Eisenhower Church of Christ.
Pallbearers will be Cole Jack Barton II, Cole Jack Barton III, Daniel Marks, Jeffery Marks, Jimmy L. Robinett and Billy Joe Robinett. Honorary pallbearers are Robert Dunn, J.D. Dunn, and Dewey Dunn. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive visitors from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday evening at Sunset Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to Odyssey Home Hospice of Odessa and Battered Women and Children of Odessa.
Services entrusted to Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.

Margaret King

ODESSA — Margaret King, 93, of Odessa and formerly of Monahans, died Sunday, April 4, 2004, at Hospice House in Odessa. She was born July 16, 1910, in Bridgeport, Ill., to Glenn and Bertha (McGlaughlin) Smiley.
She married Larry King on March 5, 1935, in Eldorado, Kan. They moved to Monahans in 1959, where Margaret worked as an LVN and retired as a dental assistant for Dr. Longbotham. After retiring, she worked for the Fabric Shop, Jack and Jill Shop and with Dr. Zea.
Survivors include two sons, Mike King and wife, Suzanne, of Tucson, Ariz., and Freddy King and wife, Jill, of Midland. Also, three daughters, Jane O’Dell of Odessa, Martha Carnes of Odessa and Susie Klusmeyer and husband, J. C., of Odessa. Her grandchildren, Michelle Simo, Cory King, Kelly Bergman, Kevin O’Dell, DeeDee Bohanan, Kathy Woods, Tracie Carnes, Dawn Washington, Erin King, Braden King, Bonda Elder and Willy Campbell. Also 16 great-grandchildren.
Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, Larry King; son, Gary King; brother, Bill Smiley; and granddaughter, Trishia O’Dell.
Services have been set for 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 7, 2004, at St. John Catholic Church with Father John Lucido officiating. A rosary will be held on Tuesday, March 6, 2004, at 7:30 p.m. at St. John Catholic Church. Burial will be in Monahans Memorial cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Bubba O’Dell, Willie Campbell, Monty Bohanan, Johnny Woods, John Elder and Cory King.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Home Hospice or to Hospice House in Odessa.
Services are under the direction of Family Funeral Services/Jackie Harkey.

Luther Sandell

ODESSA — Luther Sandell, 82, of Odessa died Sunday April 4, 2004, at Deerings Nursing Home. He was born October 31, 1921, in Tuscola, Texas. He moved to Odessa in the early ’50s. Mr. Sandell served in the Navy during WWII.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, A.J. and Lula Sandell Sr., and his brother, A.J. Sandell Jr.
He is survived by his sister-in-law, Lessie Sandell of Odessa; nephew, Billy Sandell of Lake Livingston; nieces, Nancy Allman of Abilene and Sherry Schuepbach of Odessa; and six great-nephews and one great-niece.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 6, 2004, at the Sweetwater City cemetery in Sweetwater.
Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

Thelbert ‘T. E.’ Alford

ODESSA — Thelbert Eathel Alford, 70, of San Angelo, died Monday, Feb. 23, 2003, in Baptist Memorial Nursing Home in San Angelo.
Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Odessa. Arrangements are by Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.
He was born in Horry County, S.C.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister, W. J. Alford of Odessa, and Herbert Alford and Emma Rabon of South Carolina.
He is survived by his son, Curtis of San Angelo. Other survivors include his brother, E. J. ‘Shorty’ and sister-in-law, Peggy Alford, of Odessa. He is also survived by sisters, Mary Johnson and Jane Best of South Carolina; many nieces and nephews, close friends and loved ones.
T. E. was a Christian and a member of the Church of God.
