Donovan Ray Dearman
MONAHANS — Donovan Ray Dearman, beloved son, brother, grandson, nephew and friend passed away Friday, Feb. 27, at the age of 26.
Donovan was born June 4, 1977, in Odessa and lived all his life in Monahans. He graduated from Monahans High School in 1995 and attended Mary Hardin Baylor University and Odessa College.
He had been a member of Southside Baptist Church since he was 6 years old. Donovan was baptized on Dec. 11, 1983. He served Texas Baptist Men as a State RA staffer for three years. Donovan loved God, his family and friends, Nascar, the Yankees, the Monahans Loboes and the Dallas Cowboys.
He was a plant operator for Gulf Coast Authority in Odessa. He was a loyal friend and a thoughtful, caring and loving son and brother.
He is survived by his parents, Gary and Debbie Dearman of Monahans; brother, Dustin Reed Dearman of the home; sister, Angela Kristine Pralle and husband Jim of Midland; grandparents, Jim and Aline Dearman of Seminole and Jimmy and Beth Reed of Lovington, N.M.; nephews, Myles and Sydney Pralle; aunts, Kathy, Pam and Linda; uncles, Kenneth and Cliff; first cousins, Leigh, Pete, Kim and Chris; and numerous second cousins and a host of extended family at Southside Baptist Church.
His cousin and dearest friend, Lonnie Dee Jennings, preceded him in death.
Donovan, you were the most wanted child in the world. You’re our soul mate, and we love you and will miss you more than words can say. We’ll see you again soon.
Officiating ministers will be the Rev. Craig Rhoton, the Rev. Gary Tapley and the Rev. Randy Mullin. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 2, 2004, at Southside Baptist Church in Monahans. Burial will follow at the Monahans Memorial cemetery.

Janet Kissinger Thayer
ODESSA — Janet Kissinger Thayer, 91, of Odessa, died Thursday, Feb. 26, 2004, in Odessa surrounded by her family.
She was born June 23, 1912, in New Castle, Penn., to Walter C. Kissinger, MD, and his wife, Sara Maude Frisbee Kissinger.
The former Miss Kissinger was a reporter for nearly 20 years. She began in 1928, working for the New Castle News. During World War II, she became a feature writer for the McKeesport Daily News in McKeesport, Penn., near Pittsburgh. Her byline, “by Janet Kissinger,” appeared every day on the front page, and she interviewed such greats as Clark Gable and Eleanor Roosevelt.
When she left the Daily News, the Mayor of McKeesport awarded her the Key to the City. She later worked for the Youngstown Vindicator in Youngstown, Ohio, where she was Bureau Chief of three counties.
She married
Dr. J.B. Nielsen, an optometrist and jeweler in New Castle, and raised their two children there. Dr. Nielsen died in 1961. In 1990, she married
a retired architect, Harding H. Thayer, and they moved to Boqueron, Puerto Rico, where they built a house by the sea.
She was a kind and gentle lady, loved by all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, John Frisbee Kissinger; as well as both of her husbands.
She leaves her children, Jon Nielsen and wife Jane of Odessa and Sara Maude Nielsen Garrett and husband Gene of Gardendale. She also leaves six beloved grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, March 3, 2004, at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dave Dinneen of Asbury United Methodist Church officiating.

Dorothy Jean Hollis
ODESSA — Dorothy Jean Hollis, 79, of Odessa passed away Monday, March 15, 2004, at Medical Center Hospital. She was born on September 25, 1924, in Eastland, Texas, to Louis Wilmer and Thora Inez Nabors.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Jimmie and Leon Nabors.
She is survived by her two daughters, Debbie Case of Odessa and Diane Eudy of Little Rock, Ark.; son, Charlie Hollis of Odessa; three grandchildren, Christopher Sheldon of Corpus Christi, Tara Llewellyn of Sherwood, Ark., Heather Hollis of Odessa; and one great-grandson, Joshua Llewellyn of Sherwood, Ark.; four nieces and nephews, Sue Riech of Taylor, Wis., Alton Nabors of Eastland, Lee Cavaleri of Missouri, Ernie Nabors of San Angelo; three great-nieces and nephews; and four great-great-nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 20, 2004, at Eastland City cemetery in Eastland, Texas.

Y. G. “Jay” Hughes II
MIDLAND — Y. G. “Jay” Hughes II of Midland, Texas, passed away Thursday, March 18, 2004.
He was born January 29, 1935, to Young Glenn Hughes and Mildred Rachel Smith Hughes in Pioneer, Texas, and was raised and educated there. On January 15, 1957, Jay married
Glenda June Atwood in Cross Plains, Texas. For over 50 years Jay owned and operated numerous oil and oilfield service businesses in the West Texas area.
He is preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Jo Clair Cullers.
Jay is survived by his wife, Glenda June Hughes of Midland, Texas; son and daughter-in-law, Jeb and Andrea Hughes of Midland; daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Jeff Garner of Flower Mound, Texas; three grandchildren, Meagan and Amy Hughes and Sam Garner; two close cousins, James Alexander and his wife, Jean, and May Jones and her husband, D.P., all of Pioneer, Texas; many other family members and friends.
Graveside services have been scheduled for 4 p.m. Friday, March 19, 2004, at Pioneer cemetery in Pioneer, Texas, with the Reverend Bruce Stovall officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home, 801 Andrews Hwy. Midland, Texas.

Vesta Cooper Lynn
BROWNWOOD — Vesta Cooper Lynn, age 93, of Brownwood and formerly of Odessa, went to be with the Lord on March 16, 2004, in Brownwood, Texas. She was known to many friends and family as Sue. She was born on 1-11-11 to John “Hunter” and Minnie Lee Cooper in Garrett’s Bluff (near Paris, Texas).
Graveside services for Vesta Sue Lynn will be held at Rocky Creek cemetery on Friday, March 19, 2004, at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Rick Justice officiating. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Davis-Morris Funeral Home on Thursday, March 18, 2004.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lonnie Everett Lynn; her only child, Lonnie Beth Lynn Kingston; her parents; and one sister, Vi Holman.
Sue started teaching school at the age of 18 in a one-room school in Gibson, Oklahoma. She later moved to Odessa, Texas where she taught first grade at Milam Elementary for 21 years before retiring in 1976. She moved to Brownwood, Texas in November 2001 to live with her son-in-law James David Kingston and his wife Barbara. She was a member of Rocky Creek Baptist Church, where she accepted Jesus as her Savior on January 22, 2002, and was baptized on April 7, 2002. Sue had a very special bond with many friends, neighbors, and family, and she will be greatly missed by all. She loved her Sunday School class taught by Fayegene Bush and the church services. “Granny” wanted to be buried at Rocky Creek cemetery.
She is survived by the joys of her life, her two grandchildren, Sonia Lynn Koopmann and husband Cliff of Converse Texas and James Lyle Kingston and wife Lori of Tulsa, Oklahoma. She is also survived by a brother Ray Cooper and wife Eva of Sulphur Springs, Texas; a sister Edith Simmons of Lubbock Texas and a sister Doris McAnnally of Dumas, Texas. Also surviving are four stepchildren: Barbara Yorgensen and husband Russell of Snyder, Jimmy Lynn and wife Patricia of Strawn Texas, Richard Lynn of Strawn, Texas, and Helen Cozby of Anacoco, Louisiana. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
As a recipient of the homebound mission work at Rocky Creek Baptist Church, she truly enjoyed her weekly visit, hugs, and homemade desserts from Bonnie Sides. She requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Rocky Creek Baptist Church Homebound Ministry, 4301 CR 557 (Hwy 279), Brownwood, Texas 76801.
James A. Young
ODESSA — James A. Young, 75, a longtime resident of Odessa, passed away Tuesday, March 16, 2004, at his residence after a lengthy illness. He was born December 5, 1928, in Abernathy, Texas, to Guyton and Bessie Young, moving to Odessa in 1936.
James retired from Texaco after 15 years and was owner of Seale Furniture and Appliance for 13 years, retiring due to illness. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Guyton Young of San Antonio and Pat Neil of Green Bay, Wis.; sisters, Ruby Nell Matlock of Fort Worth and Louise Richardson of Odessa.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Jo Cleta Young of Odessa; daughter, Debra and husband, Michael Dale, of Baltimore, Md.; grandchildren, James Vick of Baltimore, Md., Laura and husband, Chris Long, of Odessa; great-grandchildren, Angeleah Long, Dustin Long of Odessa; sisters, Elizabeth Galyon of Dallas, Wanda and husband, Lonnie Wilkinson, of Spring Field, Mo., Reba Perry of Odessa; and many nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 19, 2004, at Sunset Memorial Gardens with David Kirby presiding. Pallbearers will be Michael Dale, Jim Vick, Kerry Brunken, Lee Perry, Tommy Ferrell and Herbert Martin.

Donny Culwell
MIDLAND — Donny Culwell, of Midland, passed away Sunday, Dec. 21, 2003.
He was born Jan. 20, 1969, to Rodger Culwell and Barbara Slaughter Culwell in Kermit. Donny grew up in Jal, N.M. where he graduated from high school. He attended ENMU in Portales, N.M. and Angelo State University in San Angelo. On Dec. 29, 1990, he married
Candy Wallace in Eunice, N.M. Since December 1995, Donny had worked for Mayfield Paper Company in Odessa. His memberships included Sigma Alpha Epsilon, local Harley Owners Group and the National Harley Owners Group and Southside 109 Motorcycle Club.
Donny and Candy have made their home in Greenwood since August of 1998. Donny was a loving husband and father; he was devoted to all of his family and friends, never meeting a stranger. Donny touched so many lives and anyone who met him could not help but love him. He loved sports, especially football, he supported the Greenwood Rangers. Donny also helped coach his daughters in basketball and softball. One of the things that brought a lot of enjoyment to Donny’s life was riding his Harley alone or with his friends.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Ray Culwell.
Donny is survived by his wife of thirteen years, Candy Culwell; his children, Taylor and Mackenzie, all of Greenwood; parents, Rodger and Barbara Culwell of Midland; brother and sister-in-law, Jason and Amber Culwell of Odessa; paternal grandmother, Ima Culwell of Albuquerque, N.M.; maternal grandparents, Bob and Jean Slaughter of Kermit; great-grandmother, Jewel Neel of Waco; mother-in-law, Judy Watts of Eunice, N.M.; sisters-in-law, Tammy Anderson of Eunice, N.M.; Dina Sharp of Odessa; many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews and friends.
Funeral services have been scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, at Greenwood Baptist Church with the Rev. Wayman Swopes officiating. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park. Arrangements are under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home, 801 Andrews Hwy. Midland, Texas.
Pallbearers will be Jason Culwell, Rusty Crawford, Ed Hunt, Abel Sena, Lloyd Lovette, Mike Furry and Ron Welch.
Billy Jack Evans
MIDLAND — Billy Jack Evans was born on Nov. 26, 1932, in Coahoma. The family moved to Midland County early in 1933 where he and his twin brother Bobby Joe attended rural schools named Stokes and Courtney, later completing their high school education at Midland High School. Billy attended Texas A&M College at College Station, graduating in the spring of 1953 with an Agricultural degree in Range and Forestry and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Air Force. He was employed by the U.S.D.A. for one year as a range specialist and was assigned to Ft. Stockton. The following year he reported for two years of active duty for training at Lowry Air Force Base, Denver, as a Photo-Radar Intelligence Officer, and was assigned to Japan to complete his tour of duty. Following discharge from the Air Force Billy returned to his civilian job with the U.S.D.A. He later worked for the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs on the Papago Reservation located near Tucson, Arizona. A final move was a return to Midland to commence a 45 year farming and ranching occupation that extended to Reeves and Jeff Davis Counties in Texas and ranching in New Mexico and Colorado. He was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church, Midland.
Billy died on Monday, Dec. 22, 2003. He is survived by his wife, Gloria Ruth Anguish Evans of Midland; sons, Scott Evans and wife Kim and children Jenna and Tyler of Jeff Davis County, Kristen of Lubbock, Justin and Chad of Pecos; Paul Evans and wife Pam and children Adam and Blake of Stanton; Dusty Evans and wife Sandra and baby Courtney of Midland; daughters, Elaine Evans Shock and husband Billy and children Cam and wife Lissa, Sheriden, and Seth and wife Amber and babies Cassidye and Skye, all of Midland; Lori Evans Lucas and husband J.C. of Cincinnati. Also, sister Ida Robison of Midland and brother Bob Evans of Greenwood, as well as many aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews, and cousins.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Palmer and Louise Evans of Greenwood; son, Alan Lane Evans, and infant twin daughters, Sharon and Suzanne Evans.
Billy had many cherished friends and neighbors throughout his life. He was known to be fair and honest in his business endeavors and his favorite hobby was fishing.
Funeral services have been scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, at First Baptist Church of Midland with the Rev. Bob Hopkins officiating. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park. Arrangements are under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home, 801 Andrews Hwy. Midland, Texas.
