ODESSA — Dale Bryan Watts of Odessa departed this world on Monday, Feb. 2, 2004. He was 80. Services have been scheduled for 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors Chapel in Odessa. Netherton Funeral Home of Brownwood will take charge of graveside services on Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Garden of Memories cemetery in DeLeon.
Dale was born in DeLeon, Texas, on July 28, 1923, to Ernest and Cloe Brownlee Watts. He was a member of Temple Baptist Church. For those who knew him, he was an extraordinary individual who had the unique ability to make anyone he met, even after the briefest of conversations, feel very special. His was a personality of love and kindness. It was a trait that he was able to teach his children and grandchildren.
Dale felt blessed to have served his country in the European Theater during World War II. Throughout the years, Dale maintained a close relationship with his fellow patriots, but was troubled as the years took their toll on close friends who were called to meet their maker.
Perhaps it was growing up in the Depression years that gave Dale a fond appreciation of the quality of life we experience as Americans today. He was born and raised in Comanche County and graduated from DeLeon High School, where, after returning from military service, he met Neva Freeman, who would become his wife of 57 years.
Like most people in the 1950s, the good oilfield jobs lured the couple to West Texas where they raised two sons and where Dale developed an emotional tie to Odessa and a love for MOJO football. Dale received the George Manley Award, one of the highest awards given by the Permian Booster Club. This was a point of pride that gave an exclamation point to his demands for a higher standard of excellence.
Dale will be greatly missed by his wife, Neva; two sons, Phil Watts and wife, Gwen, of Brownwood and Randy Van Watts and wife, Michelle, of Roswell, N.M.; two brothers, Bobby Watts of Bangs and Weldon Watts of Lake Proctor; four grandchildren, Taffy Watts of Austin, Tami Watts Jones of Brownwood, Tony Hurst of Arlington and Jessica Watts of Albuquerque; two great-grandchildren, Joseph Hurt and Watts Lea Jones.
Dale is predeceased by his parents, Ernest and Cloe Watts and his in laws, Charlie and Noreen Freeman.
