Lorenzo S. ‘Lencho’ Bretado

MIDLAND — Lorenzo S. “Lencho” Bretado of Midland, Texas, passed away Wednesday, April 14, 2004, as the result of an industrial accident.
He was born February 10, 1945, to Manuel Bretado and Luisa Sanchez Bretado in Durango, Mexico.
He was a great husband, father and grandfather. He had lots of friends and would always be there to give a hand. Lencho was a very hard worker and had worked for the pipe business for over 20 years. At the time of his death he was employed with TETRA Technologies, Inc. He loved to joke around with everyone, loved to listen to music and enjoyed having everyone over on weekends for a Bar-B-Que. He will be missed by his family and friends.
Lencho is survived by his wife, Adela Bretado of Midland, Texas; sons, Andres Bretado of Midland, Texas, Manuel Bretado of El Paso, Texas, Natividad Bretado of Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico, Vicente Bretado of Indiana; daughters, Blanca Bretado of Indiana, Martha Bretado of Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico, Gloria Bretado of Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico; brothers, Odilon Bretado of Midland, Texas, Andres Bretado of Bellwood, Ill., Gonzalo Bretado of San Jose, Calif.; sisters, Claudia Bretado of Maywood, Ill., Elisa Bretado of Mexico City, Ventura Cervantes of Coahoma, Texas, Luz Martinez of Sandsprings, Texas; and 14 grandchildren.
A rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 17, 2004, at Ellis Funeral Home. Funeral services have been scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, April 18, 2004, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park.
Arrangements are under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home, 801 Andrews Hwy., Midland, Texas.

Billy Ray Everett

ODESSA — Billy Ray Everett, 65, of Odessa, passed away Wednesday, April 14, 2004, at his residence. He was born November 9, 1938, in Bonanza, Ark. He moved to Odessa in 1952 from Arkansas. He was retired production foreman, having worked for OXY Production.
He is survived by his sons, Larkin Everett of Odessa, Guy Everett and wife, Ruschelle, of San Angelo and Tony Everett and wife, Christine, of Big Spring; a sister, Patsy Owen and husband, Jerry, of Odessa; and five grandchildren, Tanya, Jeremy, Brandon, Andrew and Bryce.
Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 17, 2004, at Sunset Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Jimmy Braswell officiating.
Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

Al Mason

MIDLAND — Al Mason of Midland, Texas, passed away Wednesday, April 14, 2004.
He was born May 22, 1929, to Homer Mason and Naomi Aldridge Mason in Hereford, Texas. Al was raised and educated in Plainview and Abilene and received his GED from the Army.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Patricia Mason, his parents, four brothers and one great-grandson.
Al is survived by his wife, Priscilla Lane Mason; children, Lynn and Gail Kidd, Kelly and Debbie Mason, Darwin and Tana Baker, Brad and Lisa Lewis, Robert and Amy Owens, Jill Fuller, Mike and April Carrasco; grandchildren, Aaron, Nathan and Jessica Mason, Justin, Makenzie and Jared Lewis, Brian and Cindy Booker, Justin and Amanda Williams, Kendall and Lori Powell, Jimmy and Becky Bowden, Logan, Zane and Garrett Owens, Kyler Carrasco; great-grandchildren, Aubrey Booker, Matthew and Chloe Garcia, Jeremy Williams, Autumn and Branden McIntyre, Jace Powell; sister, Jewell Poage; brothers, Tim and John
Mason.
The family will receive friends at Ellis Funeral Home, Friday, April 16, 2004, between the hours of 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.
Funeral services have been scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, April 17, 2004, at Golf Course Road Church of Christ. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park. Arrangements are under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home, 801 Andrews Hwy., Midland, Texas.

James ‘Jim’ Hapenney

HONOLULU, Hawaii — James “Jim” Hapenney died quietly April 13th at Queens Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. He was 83 years old. Jim was born in Delavan, Illinois, to John Hapenney Jr. and Edna Ireland. He graduated from Pekin Community High School and attended Wesleyan University in Bloomington, Illinois. Jim married Nora Jane “Nix” Weeks of Tremont, Illinois, in 1940. She preceded him in death in February 2001.
During WWII, Jim served in the U.S. Coast Guard. After discharge, he worked for the Chicago Daily News. In 1947, he was hired by the Odessa American newspaper in Odessa, Texas, as the Circulation Manager. Jim and Nix worked for the Odessa American for 33 years, retiring in 1980 to live in Honolulu, Hawaii. He was a past president of the Texas Circulation Managers Association and a member of the International Circulation Managers Association. He was also active in the American Legion and Elks Clubs.
Jim Hapenney is survived by a son, James D. “Dan” Hapenney II and his wife, Sandra, who reside in Waco, Texas. Three grandchildren, Penney Simpson, Bette Hapenney and James D. Hapenney III; and five great-grandchildren, Alex Simpson and Ashley, Jason and Samantha Millerd and Brienna Hapenney, also survive Jim Hapenney.
A funeral mass is being held Monday, April 19, at noon at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace in Honolulu. His ashes will be interred at the Punchbowl National cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu at 3 p.m. Thursday, April 22.
The arrangements are being handled by Ultimate Cremations of Honolulu.
If desired, donations may be made to American Lung Association in Jim’s memory.

Pershing “P.J.” Johnson

ODESSA — Pershing “P.J.” Johnson, 85, of Odessa joined our Lord on April 20, 2004, at the Hospice House. He was born December 4, 1918, in Lockesburg, Sevier County, Ark., to Robert E. Lee Johnson and Rilla Dorthia Jester.
P.J., an electrician by trade, met and married his “Shorty,” Esther Ward, on July 4, 1941, at the Methodist Parsonage in Lockesburg. P.J. was working at the Lone star Arsenal and Defense plant in Texarkana, Ark., when he answered the call of the West Texas Oil Fields in Big Lake. He worked as a derrick man for Carl J. Westland Drilling Company until he was able to move his family to Big Lake in 1952.
In 1956, he went to work for Southland Royalty Oil Company in the Spraberry Aldwell Unit Camp, where he raised his children. After retirement from Southland, he and Esther relocated to Odessa in April of 1981.
At his passing, P.J. was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church; a member and Past Master of Belleville Lodge No. 35, Lockesburg, Ark., Ancient Free and Accepted Masons; a member of the Roy Jesse Fry Class of 1957, El Paso, Scottish Rite and a member of Friendship Chapter No. 1008, Order of the Eastern Star.
P.J. was preceded in death by his mother, father, two brothers, Lloyd and Will, and grandson, Toby Lane Johnson.
He is survived by his loving wife, Esther of Odessa; Billy Robert Johnson and wife, Donna, of Gillette, Wyo., Frances Ann Johnson of Odessa, Texas; brother-in-law, R.A. ”Berry” Brock of Lake Chatham, La.; sister-in-law, Hope Elise Ward of Ogden, Ark.; very much loved friend, Sally Everett of Odessa; grandsons, Walter Neil Johnson and wife, Tiffany, of Houston, Robert Scott Johnson and wife, Melissa, of Odessa, Tim Bath and wife, Virginia, of Estes Park, Colo., Randy Bath and wife, Dana, of Gillette, Wyo.; granddaughter, Piper Volz of Odessa; numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many friends.
Honorary pallbearers are brothers, Kenneth Scates and James Kelley. Pallbearers are Walter Marion Brock of Smith Mountain Lake, Va., R.G. “Sonny” Kirkland of Chatham, La., Douglas Ward of Ogden, Ark., Dick Miller of Mathis, Texas, Bill Miller of Aurora, Colo., and Harley Miller of Atlanta, Texas.
The family will receive visitors from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 23, at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 24, at Asbury United Methodist Church, 4001 E. University with the Rev. Dave Dineen officiating. A Masonic Ceremony will be held at the burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to the Asbury United Methodist Church, Odessa Home Hospice, Scottish Rite Crippled Children Hospital or Order of the Eastern Star – ESTARL.
Services entrusted to Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.

Michael Shane Phillips

ODESSA — Michael Shane Phillips, 35, of Marble Falls died Tuesday, April 20, 2004.
Graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, April 24, at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Odessa. Visitation will be at 6 p.m. Friday, April 23, at Clements-Wilcox Funeral Home in Marble Falls, Texas.
Born on February 28, 1969, in Fort Worth, Texas, Michael was the son of Charles and Connie (Rehders) Phillips. Michael was a truck driver for Trimac Transport.
Survivors include his parents, Charles and Connie Phillips of Odessa; son, Coby Phillips of Grandview; daughter, Alexis Phillips of Grandview; brothers, Tim Phillips of Marble Falls and Chris Phillips of Gardendale; grandparents, Bill and Louise Rehders of Pasadena and Essie Phillips of Carlsbad, N.M. Michael is also survived by many aunts and uncles, other relatives and close friends.

Jack Lee Hildebrand

ODESSA — Jack Lee Hildebrand, 68, of Odessa passed away Friday, April 16, 2004, in Medical Center Hospital.
Graveside services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Sunset Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Charles Tapley officiating. Jack was born March 12, 1936 in Des Moines Iowa to Glenn W. and Leota Hildebrand.
Jack served his country in the U.S. Navy. He was a Jack-of-all-trades by choice but did mainly plumbing and offset printing. Jack never met a stranger and he had the Gift of Gabb! His lifetime hobbies were roller skating, dancing, golfing, bowling, traveling, telling jokes and pulling pranks on family and friends. He loved to communicate with family and friends by way of his computer named “JSlowpoke67” 10-4.
He was always there to lend a hand. He will be greatly missed by family and friends. Jack was a member of VFW Post 4372, Odessa, Texas; ABATE of Iowa, American Bowling Congress, and Our Own Van Club of Des Moines, Iowa.
He is survived by his sons, Glenn Hildebrand and Dana of Midland, Troy Hildebrand of Omaha, Neb., David Hildebrand of Denver, Colo., and Jonathan Hildebrand and Debby of Des Moines, Iowa; his daughter, Robbin Hall and husband, Mike, of Ward, Ark.; sisters, Beverly Basinger and husband, Ron, of Sandy, Utah, and Letha Faler and husband, Everett, of Adel, Iowa; one brother, Glenn W. Hildebrand of Salt Lake City, Utah; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews and good friends.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 40 years, Harriett M. Hildebrand; his father and mother; one grandson, Jason Frost; and one nephew, Tommy Basinger.
Pallbearers were Glenn Hildebrand, Scotty Hildebrand, David Hildebrand, Jaybo Hildebrand and Ronnie Donahue Jr.

Grace ‘Chita’ Hernandez Sosa

ODESSA — Surrounded by her loving husband and family, Grace “Chita” Hernandez Sosa, 69, of Odessa, went to be with the Lord on Friday, April 23, 2004. She passed away at Medical Center Hospital.
She was born April 16, 1935, in Big Spring, Texas, to Jose and Petra R. Hernandez. On Nov. 20, 1950, here in Odessa, she united in marriage to Manuel P. Sosa. Mrs. Sosa was a Christian Catholic and was co- founder and owner of Sosas’ Country Store.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Jose Hernandez Jr.; and two sisters, Manuela Nunez and Magdalena Hernandez.
She is survived by her husband, Manuel P. Sosa of Odessa; two sons, Manuel Sosa Jr. and wife Alicia and Ricky Sosa and wife Rachel of Odessa; four daughters, Rosie Garcia, Olivia Muro and husband Jesus, Celia “Bobbie” Huerta and Deborah “Debi” Sosa Llanez and husband Jesse, all from Odessa; four brothers, Esquievel Hernandez of Big Spring, Genaro Hernandez of Odessa, Theodore “Chololo” Hernandez of Big Spring and Isidero Hernandez of Albuquerque N.M.; five sisters, Frances “Kika” Parras of Big Spring, Julia Cruz, of Fort Worth, Cruz Hinojosa of Big Spring, Lorenza “Leche” Paradez of Greely, Colo., Josefina “Pina” Hernandez of Plainview, Texas; grandchildren, Diane Calderon, Roy Calderon, Mona Rico, Sonya “Bebi” Valencia, Yvonne Tijerina, Anthony Galindo, Monica Solko, Christopher “Chris” Galindo, Joe Sosa, Jennifer Sosa, Sandra Huerta, Natalie Huerta, Tamera Rodriguez, Ricky Sosa Jr., Tiffani Sosa and Avonna Sosa; and 25 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Roy Calderon, Anthony Galindo, Chris Galintdo, Joe Sosa, Rick Sosa Jr. and Victor Rodriguez.
A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Monday April 26, 2004, at Odessa Funeral Home Chapel. Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Tuesday April 27, 2004, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Joseph Uecker officiating interment will follow at Rosehill cemetery.
