Glen Henry Barks

ODESSA — Glen Henry Barks, 70, of Odessa, died from a lengthy illness Tuesday Aug. 3, 2004, in Weatherford.
Glen was born August 13, 1933, in Caney, Ark., to John Henry and Nettie Mae Barks. He served in the US Army. Glen worked as an electrician. Although he was an avid fisherman, Glen’s true passion was playing the guitar.
Glen is survived by his children, Darryl Barks of Odessa, Larry Barks of Weatherford, David Barks and wife, Tammy, of Fort Worth and Gary Barks and wife, Susan, of Weatherford; siblings, Claude Barks and wife, Ovella, of Hot Springs and Geneva Thomason; and grandchildren, Laredo Barks, Joshua Barks, Rebekah Barks, Micah Barks, Dylan Barks and Reagan Barks.
Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, August 7, 2004, at the Beacon Baptist Church of Odessa with the Rev. Amon Langston officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens cemetery.
Memorials may be directed to Hospice.
Arrangements entrusted to Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors.

Robert Michael ‘Mike’ Bates

ODESSA — Robert Michael “Mike” Bates was killed in a motorcycle accident Wednesday, August 4, in Odessa. Mike was born June 4, 1959, in Odessa.
Mike was employed with Home Depot as supervisor of the Pro Desk. He was also owner of Bates Process Service where he worked closely with local attorneys and county personnel.
Mike was a loving husband, father, son and loyal friend. One of his main priorities was not to miss any of Tish’s school or outside events. He enjoyed life. He loved the outdoors and in his younger years was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enoyed cooking for his friends and co-workers and was even featured doing a cooking demonstration for local TV. He loved and enjoyed taking trips on his Harley, but more than anything he loved his family.
Mike was preceded in death by his grandparents; several aunts; an uncle; his sister, Debbie Hefner; and stepfather, Joseph R. Mathers.
Mike is survived by his wife, Joni Bates; daughter, Tisha Bates; and father, Frank Bates, all of Odessa; and mother, Glenda Mathers of Robert Lee; Debbie’s husband, Bill Hefner; nephews, Jason Hefner and wife, Sarita, of Sweetwater and Jerod Hefner of Dallas; nieces, Belinda Hefner, Brooke Hefner and Kelsee Hefner. He is also survived by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Alvie and Reba Adams; sisters-in-law, Lana Howard and husband, Lonnie and Kathy Nunley and husband, Jimmy; and niece, Stefanie Nunley, all of Odessa; nephews, Jay Howard and wife, Jessica, of Austin, Jason Nunley of Dallas and Tim Howard of Dallas; and worlds of friends.
Mike was loved by many and will be missed by all who knew him.
Funeral services are scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday, August 7, 2004, at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel with Jeff Sweeten of Eisenhower Church of Christ officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Antonia Calanche Cabezuela

IRAAN — Antonia Calanche Cabezuela, 83, of Iraan passed away Wednesday, August 4, 2004. in Iraan.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, August 7, 2004, at the Iraan Christian Church with Reverend Galindo, Reverend Navaratte and Reverend Gomez officiating. Burial will follow in the Restland cemetery with arrangements under the direction of Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home.
Antonia was born May 10, 1921, in San Antonio Del Bravo, Mexico. She was a homemaker and a member of the Iraan Christian Church. She had been a resident of the Iraan-Sheffield area since 1963.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Jose and Lucia Cabezuela; two brothers, Ujuenio Cabezuela and Merejo Cabezuela; and a sister, Jesus Montez.
She is survived by her loving family, her daughter, Gloria Galindo and her husband, Ernest, of Iraan; two brothers, Serapio Cabezuela of Herford, TX., and Moses Cabezuela of Carlsbad, N.M.; a sister, Alfonsa Porras of Cutler, Calif.; a half-sister, Demetria Bieza of Van Horn, TX.; three grandchildren, Ernest Galindo Jr. of Big Lake, Sonny Galindo of San Antonio and Omar Galindo of Iraan; four great-grandchildren, Brandley Galindo of San Angelo, Sonny Galindo Jr. of Knippa, TX., and Shiloh and Christian Galindo, both of Big Lake; and several nieces and nephews.

Jessie ‘Estelle’ Gambell

ODESSA — Jessie “Estelle” Gambell, 72, of Odessa, passed away Wednesday, August 4, 2004, at her residence following a brief illness. She was born May 5, 1932, in Newport, TX., to Bill and Audrey Hodges. She moved to Odessa in 1969 from Lakenheath, England. She was a homemaker and a member of Westwood Baptist Church. Estelle married Ed Gambell on July 21, 1951 in Wichita Falls, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ed; her parents, Bill and Audrey Hodges; and brother, Bill Hodges. Estelle is survived by her daughter, Paula Giesler and husband, Harold, of Odessa; sons, Phil Gambell of Austin and Bill Gambell and his wife, Cheryl, of Odessa; brother, Don Hodges and wife, Alice, of San Antonio; and three grandchildren, Jonathan Giesler, Henry and Michelle Gambell.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, August 9, in Sunset Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Weeks DuBose officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers include Pat Land, Dale Land, Dennis Wilhite, Joe Dell Blair, Scott Sachse and Miles Tindale.
In lieu of usual floral tributes, donations may be made to Odyssey Healthcare, 2651 JBS Parkway, Blvd. Ste B, Odessa, Texas 79761.

Walter Dewey Autry Jr.

JOHNSON COUNTY — Walter Dewey Autry Jr., went to his Heavenly Father Friday, July 23, 2004. Services were held at 3 p.m. Monday, July 26, 2004, at Watts Chapel United Methodist Church, Johnson County, Texas. Burial services followed at Watts Chapel cemetery. A luncheon was held in Fellowship Hall afterwards hosted by the members of Watts Chapel.
Dewey was born June 12, 1939, to W.D. Autry Sr. and Mary Bess Fine Autry. Dewey graduated from Odessa High School in 1957 and attended the University of Texas at Austin. He was a mechanical engineer for Eckel manufacturing and later for Woolley Tool where he was the Executive Vice President. Dewey resigned his position at Woolley Tool and became a Robotic Engineer for E.O.A. in Addisson. He retired from there and was in the consulting business for several companies in San Antonio until his death.
Dewey loved his family, his church family and his friends. He enjoyed his computer, his cameras, playing golf, watching U.T. play football, watching his grandson play baseball, studying genealogy and cooking for his family, friends and church.
Dewey will be missed by his family and friends. His survivors include his three children, Walter Autry of Granbury, Stephen Autry and his wife, Rosella, of Odessa and Lauren Lopez and her husband, Richard, of Austin; three brothers, Bill, Thomas and John; five grandchildren, Lindzey Stone, Brandon Autry, Zachary Autry and Jennifer and Jessica Carrasco; and three great-grandchildren, Micheal, Airika and Conlan.

Mary Gentry

CORSICANA — Mary Gentry of Mabank, formerly of Odessa, born May 21, 1920, passed away August 8, 2004.
She is survived by son and daughter-in-law, M.L. and Dorothy Stutts of Odessa, TX.; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; four nieces; five nephews; and several great-nephews and great-nieces.
Graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, August 11, 2004, at the Resthaven Memorial Park in Corsicana, TX., with the Rev. John Howard officiating.
Family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to 12 o’clock noon Wednesday at the Harbor Baptist Church, 504 Hwy 198 S., Mabank, TX.
Family requests that memorials may be made to the West Place Nursing Center, P.O. Box 232, Athens, TX. 75751 or Genesis Hospice Care, 201 Saint Thomas Dr., Athens, TX. 75751.

Grace Marie Johnson

ODESSA — The Lord is my shepherd: I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He leadeth me beside the still waters. Grace Marie Johnson, 82, of Odessa, passed away Monday, August 9, 2004, at her residence. She was born August 9, 1922 in Hamlin, TX. She was a
homemaker and a member of Sunset Heights Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles James Johnson; and two brothers, John and Carl Johnson. She was a loving Wife, Mother and Granny.
She is survived by her sons, Dwayne Johnson and wife, Donna, of Sweetwater and Ronnie Whorton and wife, Maggie, of Prescott, Ariz.; daughter, Madeline Kay Rich of Odessa, four grandchildren, Tommie Kay VanZandt and husband, John, of Odessa, Shawn Newton and wife, Cathleen, of Clarksville, Tenn., Steve Newton and wife, Niki, of Odessa and Scott Johnson of Odessa; four great-grandchildren, Lauren Kay VanZandt, Ian Van Zandt, Ryan Van Zandt and Tyler Newton.
There will be family visitation from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.Tuesday, August 10, 2004, at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, August 11, 2004, at Sunset Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Jess Little officiating.

Justin K. McLean

ALPINE — Justin K. McLean, 84, passed away Saturday, August 7, 2004, in Lubbock.
Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, August 10, 2004, at First Presbyterian Church in Alpine, Texas.
Mr. McLean was born in Framingham, Massachusetts, August 31, 1919, to Austin and Sadie McLean. He graduated from Framingham High School and Worster Trade School. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War Two and was an instructor at the Amarillo Air Base. He retired from Coca-Cola Bottling Company after more than 45 years of service. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Alpine where he served as an Elder and a Deacon. He also was a member of the Rotary Club in Marfa, Texas, and the Lions Club in Alpine. He married Helen Shearer, July 20, 1946, in Framingham, Mass.
He is survived by his wife, Helen of Alpine; son, Mark McLean of Big Spring, TX.; two brothers, Sherwood McLean of Whitinsville, Mass., and Lloyd McLean of Framingham, Mass.; two sisters, Patricia Dickey of Ashland, Mass., and Joan Zanki of Framingham, Mass.; two grandchildren, Heather McLean Neal of San Antonio and Ryan McLean of Dallas; and three great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by two sons, John Justin McLean in 1963, and James McLean in 1989.
Family suggests memorials to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, the First Presbyterian Church in Alpine or to a favorite charity.

Mary Louise Price

BURNET COUNTY — Mary Louise Price of Granite Shoals, Texas died Sunday, August 8, 2004, at Kingsland Hills Care Center at the age of 76.
She was born in Chickasha, Okla., March 20, 1928, the ninth of 11 children of Nancy (Kirkpatrick) Vaughan and Frank Vaughan. Mary became the bride of A.B. Pete Price Jr. on March 7, 1946. They exchanged vows in Colorado City, TX.
For 13 years, she and her husband owned and managed The Branding Iron Steakhouse in Odessa, and following retirement in 1990, they settled in the Hill Country.
Before Pete’s death on October 13, 2003, they were active in International Square Dance. Mary also enjoyed arts and crafts and singing and she was a member of First Assembly of God of Marble Falls.
Her survivors include daughters, Bettie M. Taber and husband, Michael, of Granite Shoals and Patricia Ilene Lucas and husband, George, of Hutto; sisters, Ruby Maxwell of Cross Plains, TX., and Lula Mae Stephens of Midland; brother, Donald Vaughan of Carthage; grandchildren, T.J. Harvel of Fort Worth, Lloyd Smith of Granite Shoals, Gene Smith of Horseshoe Bay, DeeDee Davis of Oklahoma City, Okla., Daniel Smith of Bartlett, Michael H. Taber of Detroit, Mich., and Jerrod Taber of Marble Falls; 25 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Pete of 57 years; both parents; sisters, Corene Banks and Lorene Beasley Calaway; and five brothers, Henry Vaughan, Raymond Vaughan, Herman Vaughan, Elmer Vaughan and Howard Vaughan.
Visitation will be Tuesday, August 10 from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Chapel of Waldrope-Hatfield-Hawthorne Funeral Home in Kingsland. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 11 at Lakeland Hills Memorial Park with the Rev. Richard Vandeventer officiating.
Honorary pallbearers will be her grandsons, Gene Smith, Daniel Smith, Lloyd Smith, Michael Taber and Jerrod Taber.
In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make memorial contributions to the Alzheimer’s Association of Austin, Hospice of Llano or St. Jude’s Cancer Research in Memphis, Tenn.
