Billie Love
ODESSA — Billie Love, 76, of Odessa, passed away Sunday, July 18, 2004, in Garland.
She was born December 7, 1927, in Birmingham, Alabama, to her parents, William and Chessie Dwyer Simpson.
She married
Ralph Love on December 15, 1945, in Alabama and moved to Odessa in 1955. She was a homemaker and an active member of the Sixth & Jackson Church of Christ.
She is survived by her husband, Ralph of Odessa; her son, William Curtis Love and wife, Jenny, of Burke, Virginia; her daughter, Rory Qualls of Garland; her two sisters, Edith Garrison of Center Point, Alabama and Marian Pike of Pensacola, Florida; three grandchildren, Renae and Troy Jones. Bin Love and Rachel Love; and two great-grandchildren, Ginnie Jones and Lauren Jones.
Family visitation was from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, July 23, 2004, at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, July 24, 2004, at Sixth & Jackson Church of Christ with the Ministers Bennie Keck and Lynn Money officiating.

Robert Ewell McKnight
ODESSA — Fort Davis rancher, Robert Ewell McKnight, died July 1 following a long struggle with Parkinson’s disease. He was 72 years of age.
Graveside services will be held on Saturday, July 3, at 1 p.m., at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Odessa, Texas.
Honorary pallbearers are: Sonny Henderson, Ted Gray, Jim White, Allan Hawkins, Sonny McElroy, Palmer Willis, Tom Rodman, Trey Edwards, Ray Stocker, Jimmy Powell and Vern Forman.

Bob was born to Ewell and Lucille White McKnight on August 10, 1931, in San Angelo, Texas. He graduated from Odessa High School in 1948. McKnight’s college years were interrupted because he served in the United States Air Force for three years. He graduated from Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas, in 1955 but always considered himself a member of the Class of 1952.
A fifth-generation rancher, McKnight ranched in Ector, Crane, Jeff Davis and Brewster counties. In 1968, his family and he moved to Fort Davis. McKnight served as a director of the First National Bank of Odessa, the Fort Davis State Bank and the First National Bank of Alpine. He was also a past president of the Fort Davis School Board.
In addition, Bob was an active member of the Sandhills Hereford and Quarter Horse Show of Odessa, along with the Texas Cattleraisers Association and the Texas Hereford Association where he served as a vice president.
In 1993, McKnight was named a recipient of the Community Statesman Award and Distinguished Former Odessan Award for Ranching. And, in 2003, he was elected as an Honorary Director of the Texas Hereford Association.
Survivors include daughters, Debbie and Jeff Milburn of Colorado Springs, Colo., Cathy and Bill Albers of Dallas, Marci and Ned Stocker of Fort Worth, Sue and Charles Ivey of Abilene, Becca and Mark Stupfel of Fort Worth; sons, Bobby and Lynda McKnight of Fort Davis and John McKnight of Fort Worth; sister, Joann and Ed Magruder of Odessa; grandchildren Jane, Michael, Andrew, Cameron, Jennifer, Jacqueline, Mary Katherine, Chilton, Cole, James and Anna; niece, Elizabeth Lambert of Austin; and nephew, Louis Lambert of San Antonio.
Bob McKnight exhibited much strength and resilience in his struggle with Parkinson’s disease. He lived each day with hope, optimism and love. The McKnight family wishes to thank the many people who contributed to his care throughout this long and valiant battle. These include Dr. John W. Foster Jr. of Midland, Dr. Janice Knebl of Fort Worth and the fine and loving staff of the James L. West Special Care Center in Fort Worth, along with the very special caregivers that became extensions of our family in both Fort Davis and Fort Worth.
Bob leaves an everlasting legacy of unconditional love, unconscious humility, understanding and generosity. He will be missed and remembered by all.
Dad has been our “rock” throughout our lives, guiding each of us with his unfailing love, patience and understanding. We do miss you so much. We love you, Dad.
Barbara Templin
ODESSA — Barbara Templin, 67, a longtime resident of Odessa passed away Friday, July 2, 2004, at her residence.
She was born June 30, 1937, in Dallas. She was a cashier at H-E-B. She was a member of the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary, and past district president also a member of the Civil Air Patrol and the First Christian Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frankie Templin, and daughter, Donna Roberts.
She is survived by her stepsons, Leslie Templin of Grand Prairie and Ricky Templin of Phoenix, Ariz.; son-in-law, Donald Gibson of Spring; two grandchildren, Barbara Forner and James Michael Forner, both of Dallas; five great-grandchildren; and a lifetime friend, John Cherry of Odessa.
The family will meet with friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, July 5, 2004, at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 6, 2004, at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Rose Hill cemetery.

Wanda Scroggins
HENRYETTA, Okla. — Wanda Scroggins, a resident of rural Henryetta, passed away on June 27, 2004, in Seattle, Wash., at the age of 69.
Born Sept. 17, 1934, in Okfuskee County, Okla., to Delbert and Opal (Tweedy) Gann. She married
Sammy Scroggins on March 23, 1953, in Lovington, N.M. Wanda worked as a Nurse and was a member of the Salem Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband Sammy on Jan. 17, 2001, and three brothers, John, Clint and Ivan Gann.
Survivors include two daughters, Jo Cheryl Miller and Ellen Suzanne Scroggins, both of Seattle; two sisters, Joyce Conaway of Schulter and June Stephens of Henryetta; a brother, Cecil Gann of Perkins; and six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. today at Salem Baptist Church with the Rev. Terry Pittman officiating. Internment will follow at Dustin cemetery under the direction of Rogers Funeral Home of Henryetta.
Otto Albert ‘Obie’ Grief
KERRVILLE — Otto Albert “Obie” Grief, our loving dad, granddad and great-granddad, died of natural causes at his residence, 220 Harper Road, on Thursday, July 29, 2004.
Born on July 13, 1914, Obie lived a full and rewarding life for 90 years. He attended high school in San Angelo and Schreiner University on a football scholarship. He married
Joy Tippett on April 8, 1938, and enjoyed 58 years together before her death in 1996.
Obie worked in real estate in Corpus Christi in the forties, ranched in Stephenville and Kerrville in the fifties and sixties, and owned motels in Vernon, Odessa and Kerrville in the seventies and eighties. He retired in 1988.
A gentle and loving man, Obie enjoyed being with family and friends. His keen wit kept a smile on everyone’s face. One of his most enjoyable activities was the “feeds” he would host at his barn for his coffee pals. He was a member of Trinity Baptist Church and an ordained deacon.
Obie is survived by one daughter, Vicky Fisher and husband, Dale, of Big Lake; two sons, Ross Grief and wife, Seal, of Galveston and Gary Grief and wife, Lisa, of Austin; ten grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and a very special sister-in-law, Maxine Short.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 31, 2004, at Grimes Funeral Chapels officiated by the Rev. Bill Blackburn and the Rev. Lenard Hartley. Interment will follow at Garden of Memories cemetery.
Pallbearers will be grandsons, Garrett Grief, Glenn Neal, Gregg Fisher, Jim Shearer, J.R. Box, Jay Veselka, Lee Wood and Austin Grief.
Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Stacy, Ray Benton, Lester Buck, Bill Immel, Pete Bryant, Sam Williams, Leo Bachand, Gene Lock and Joe Benson.
We are very grateful to God that, in His mercy, our dad simply went to sleep and did not suffer. We appreciate all the love and care shown him by Harper House staff and residents.
Goodbye, sweet Daddy. We will miss you, but we’re glad you’re Home with Mom and the Lord.

James Hallie Chastain Jr.
ALBANY — James Hallie Chastain Jr., 75, of Albany and Breckenridge, passed away Wednesday, July 7, 2004, in a Wichita Falls hospital.
He was born May 18, 1929, in Wichita Falls. He married
Wanda Mansell on June 23, 1949, in Iowa Park. He was a longtime customer service manager for Texas Electric. Hallie was a Scoutmaster for more than 20 years. He sang in church choirs, quartets, barbershop quartets and was a square dance caller for 15 years. He was also an active member of First Christian Church.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 10, 2004, at First Christian Church with the Rev. Colby Smith officiating. Interment will be at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Resthaven Memorial Park in Midland under the direction of Godfrey – Neese Funeral Home.
He is survived by his wife, Wanda Chastain of Breckenridge and Albany; three sons, Gary Chastain and wife, Debra, of Odessa and Steven Chastain and Greg Chastain, both of Wylie; four grandchildren, Stephanie Rambo and husband, Ted, and Cristi Simmons and husband, Irvin, all of Gardendale, James Chastain and wife, Cynde, of Odessa and Julie Lewis and husband, John of Greenwood; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Eunice Marjorie Derrick
ODESSA — Eunice Marjorie Derrick “Gaw-Gaw” was given the privilege to spend 82 precious years with all her family and loved ones before going to be with the Lord July 8, 2004.
Gaw-Gaw was born July 24, 1921, in Jefferson, Texas, to her proud parents Harvey and Nancy Jane Poplin. Gaw-Gaw was a temporary resident at Seabury Nursing Center but is now awaiting us all in her permanent home, with her Creator, in Heaven. Gaw-Gaw was very precious and unique and was loved by many. She had 28 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren and 24 great-great-grandchildren, all whom she loved very much.
Gaw-Gaw was the family peacemaker and utilized her God-given talents by showing love, support, encouragement and compassion to more than her family members. She was our Sweet-Angel who enjoyed crocheting in her spare time. She also enjoyed working in the church nursery with the children, whom she loved deeply.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 10, 2004, at Sunset Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Dick Brown officiating.
Her loving husband, Harvey S.; son, Harvey Ray; and parents precede Gaw-Gaw in death.
She is survived by her six loving children, Lawrence Derrick of Wichita Falls, Wanda Ruth Baggett of Odessa, Marjorie Keith of Greenville, Harold Samuel Derrick of Grand Prairie, Carol Rich of Odessa and Donna Derrick of Odessa.
Randolph ‘Randy’ Julian Deaver
VICTORIA — Randolph “Randy” Julian Deaver, 77, of Victoria, died Sunday, July 4, 2004. He was born Nov. 12, 1926, in Ranger, to the late Otis Branch and Stella Averine Walker Deaver. He was a vessel and equipment engineer for Phillips Petroleum, working for more than 30 years. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during World War II in the South Pacific and Philippines.
He is survived by his wife, Mattie Reed Deaver; daughters, Brenda Dennard and Robyn Cooke, both of Odessa; stepdaughter, Anita Cobb of Bangs; son, Jon Deaver of Midland; stepson, Mayland Moseley of Victoria; sister, Martha Hilton of Dallas; brother, Gerald R. Deaver of Andrews; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Rosewood Funeral Chapels. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Buddy Cobb officiating. Calvin Wayne ‘Mickey’ Loyd
MIDLAND — Calvin Wayne “Mickey” Loyd, 58, of Gardendale, was taken from his family and many friends Sunday, July 4, 2004, in a local hospital. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 9, 2004, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Chapel in Midland.
He was born December 5, 1945, in Wichita Falls and married
Sue Seward on July 30, 1987, in Wichita Falls.
Calvin was a loving husband, caring father and doting grandfather. Calvin or Mickey as he was widely known and affectionately called was the epitome of the American man. Mickey loved life and lived everyday to its fullest.
He worked hard as a provider and played just as hard. Everyone who knew Mickey loved him. He was respected by all walks of life and brought a radiant shine to everyone’s face. Mickey’s playful sense of humor was a life raft in any pool of despair. Whether it was fishing in his childhood town of Holliday, Texas, or riding with family and friends on his Harley,
Mickey was at his best when he was making others happy. With the extinguishing of his candle the world is a less brighter place. He will be dearly missed.
Survivors include his wife, Carol Sue Loyd of Gardendale; five sons and three daughters-in-law, Tommy Wayne Seward of Dallas, Billy Ray Beasley of Wichita Falls, Toby Lynn and April Sanders of Odessa, James Darrell and Kristi Sanders of Brady and Cody Brent and Tina Loyd of Odessa; two daughters and one son-in-law, Amy Christine Seward of Wichita Falls and Tiffany Michelle Lewis of Vernon; his father, Hilluard Calvertson Loyd of Holliday; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Tommy Lynn and Rebecca Loyd of Portales, N.M., and Larry Don and Judy Loyd of Holliday; seventeen grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Nita Faye Loyd, of Holliday and three grandsons.
