William O. Piper
ODESSA - William Odell Piper, 88, passed away peacefully July 1, 2004, at Hospice House in Odessa.
He was born in Kaufman County to Benjamin and Addie (Cole) Piper on March 15, 1916.
An area resident since 1936, he worked in the oil industry. He served with the 62nd Armored Field Artillery during World War II in the European Theater. He saw action in North Africa, Sicily, the D-Day landing on Omaha Beach in France, Belgium, Germany and Czechoslovakia.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to Hospice House in Odessa.

Margret Walton
MESQUITE - Margret Lue Walton, 59, left this world to be with the Lord on Thursday, July 1, 2004, in Mesquite. Margret was born in Roscoe on August 22, 1944. She moved to Odessa as a small child and graduated from Odessa High School in 1963.
Although she never married
, she was like a mother to her four sisters and brother. Margret was truly an angel to all she met. She was a devout Christian and a member of the Salvation Army church, where she taught Sunday School and was a Sunbeam leader for years before her illness forced her to relocate to Heritage Place Nursing Home in Mesquite.
She was preceded in death by her father, Syeous Walton, in 1971, and her mother, Louise Walton, in 1988.
Services are 10 a.m. Monday, July 5, 2004, at the Salvation Army Chapel.
She leaves behind four sisters - Punkin Kimbrough of Odessa; Kathy Walton of Farmington, N.M., Bonnie Kiser of Mesquite, and Winona Miller of Hobbs,N.M., as well as a brother, Dewey Walton of Woodland, Cali. She will be missed by twelve nieces and nephews - Johnny Dyson, Sherry Massey, Brad Templeton, Michael Meisenheimer, Hank Kiser, Misty Cox, Jack Jones, Brandy Templeton, Michelle Kimbrough, Robert Miller, Jennifer Garza, and Chyree Miller. She also had a great niece - Calista Massey, and five great nephews - Justin Johnson, Sammye Dyson, Cory Templeton, Kevin Cox, and Jaden Miller; one great-great niece, Ashlee Johnson; several aunts, uncles, cousins, and lots of wonderful friends.
Petra Rangel Cortez
ODESSA — Petra Rangel Cortez, 75, of Odessa, passed away Friday, July 23, 2004, at her residence.
She was born Nov. 21, 1928, in San Antonio, Texas, to her parents, Jesus and Thomasa Gonzales Rangel.
She married
Miguel Rosas Cortez on April 19, 1952. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. She was a homemaker.
She is survived by her husband, Miguel of Odessa; her sons, Richard Rangel and wife Roberta of Odessa and Mike Cortez Jr. of Odessa; her daughters, Irene Hernandez and husband Jesus of Odessa, Maria Cortez and partner Mary Anne Messina of Austin, Rose Ann Cortez of Odessa Michelle Juarez and husband Danny of Odessa and Kathy Ulate and husband Edward of Odessa; her brothers, Ray Perez and wife Angie of Longmont, Colo., Joe Perez of Longmont, Colo., Manuel Perez and wife Estella of Oklahoma, John Perez and wife Libby of Longmont, Colo., Tom Perez and wife Anita of Longmont, Colo., and Tony Perez of Wyoming; her sisters, Angela Chapa and husband Joe of Odessa, Irene Lujan of Longmont, Colo., Frances Castillo and husband Agustine of Longmont, Colo., Margaret Arguello and husband Diego of Longmont, Colo., Mary Serena of Longmont, Colo., and Dolores Lujan and husband Paul of Longmont, Colo.; 14 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces.
She was preceded in death by her father, Jesus Rangel; her mother, Thomasa Rangel Perez; her stepfather, Ramon Perez; her brother, Roberto Rangel; and her sister, Jessica Rangel.
Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, July 26, 2004, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with Father Joe Uecker officiating. A rosary will be said at 7 p.m. today at Hubbard-Kelly Chapel.

Willie Roger Daniels
ODESSA — Willie Roger Daniels, 67, passed away July 23, 2004, in Odessa.
Willie was born Nov. 9, 1936, in Goldsboro, N.C., to Willie Benjamin and Eva Daniels. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran and later worked as an industrial mechanic
Willie married
Stormy Blankinship on April 28, 1998.
He was a member of Mission Dorado Baptist Church.
Willie was a kind, sincere and devoted man, whose smiling face brought joy to those he touched.
Willi’’s parents and his first wife, Linda Daniels, precede him in death.
Willie is survived by his wife, Stormy Daniels; sons, Tony Daniels and fiancee Lisa Kidd and Dwayne Barnes, all of Odessa; daughters, Bridgett Tate and husband Tim of Myrtle, Miss., and Mary Milliken and husband Joe of Odessa; brothers, Earl Daniels of Rollie, N.C., Thurman Daniels of Goldsboro, N.C., Harvey Daniels of San Antonio and James Daniels of Goldsboro, N.C.; sisters, Ethel House of Smithville, N.C., Thelma Rhodes and Minnie Strickland, both of Villsboro, N.C., and Margaret Parton of Four Oaks, N.C.; his sister-at-heart, Bettye Blackwood of Odessa; 18 grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 27 at Mission Dorado Baptist Church with the Rev Bob Bratcher officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Horace Edward Gummelt
ODESSA — Horace Edward Gummelt, 85, went to be with the Lord Friday, July 23, 2004.
He was born Aug. 28, 1918, to Otto and Annie Gummelt in Star, Texas.
Ed served his country in World War II in North Africa and France. He retired as an operator from Sid Richardson, then later retired after 20 years of service as a custodian for the Ector County Independent School District at Permian High School.
He moved to Odessa in 1950 from Lamesa and was married
Sept. 7, 1962, to Audrey Freeman Gummelt in El Reno, Okla.. He was a charter member of Central Baptist Church and a member of the V.F.W.
His parents; wife; brother, O.B. Gummelt; his sisters, Ola Mae Waddell, Eda Reed and Eula Pearl Waddell all preceded in death.
Survivors include brothers, Earl Gummelt and Bill Gummelt, both of Odessa; sisters Gertrude Green, Lorene Gummelt and Doris McCasland, all of Odessa; and stepson, John Freeman of Odessa; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Family visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. David Johnson officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Gene Waddell, Bobby Reed, Sherman Reed, Gerald Gummelt, Casey Reed and Jeff Reed.
Memorials may be donated in lieu of flowers to Central Baptist Church building fund at 1401 N. Texas Ave., Odessa.

Juliana C. Heredia
CRANE — On July 23, 2004, Juliana went to be with her beloved Lord.
She was a loved wife, mother, grandmother and friend to many. She was a devoted lifetime member of the Good Shepherd Catholic Church and sang in the choir. She was the leader of the Rosary Group there every Tuesday and Friday. She also participated in many other church activities.
She has been a Crane native since 1956 — born in Buena Vista — and loved by all who knew her. She will be extremely missed by all.
She was preceded in death by her father, Domingo Chavarria; mother, Agripina Chavarria; brother, Helijadro Chavarria; and sister, Dominga Primera.
She is survived by her loving husband, Ismael V. “Pete” Heredia Sr.; daughter, Aurora H. Garcia of Crane; sons, Ricky Heredia and Martha of Crane, Johnnie Heredia and wife Virginia of Phoenix, Ariz., Ismael Heredia Jr. and wife Bertha of Andrews and Guadalupe “Wally” Heredia and wife Amalia “Molly” of Midland; and 11 grandchildren, Neomi L. Garcia, Arick Heredia and wife Brenna, Kristien Vuelvas and husband Johnny, Ricky Heredia II, Joseph Heredia, Andrea Heredia, Johnnie Heredia Jr., Adriana Heredia, Isaac Heredia, Samantha Heredia and Joseph Casas. She also had three great-grandchildren, Faith Garza, Koby Ross Henderson and Harley Casas. Also surviving are three sisters, Mary Gomez and husband Rosendo of Odessa, Simona Jimenez and husband Mercy of Kermit and Pina Jaquez and husband Chayo of Odessa; and by nieces and nephews.
A wake service will be held at 7 p.m. today at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Mass will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, July 26, 2004, at the Sacred Heart Church with burial to follow in the Crane County cemetery.

Leora Huggins
SNYDER — Leora Huggins, 98, died Friday at Parks Retirement Village in Odessa.
Graveside service will be at 2 p.m Tuesday in Snyder cemetery with Burt Groves of the Eisenhower Church of Christ officiating.
Arrangements are by Wright Colonial Funeral Home in Snyder.
Miss Huggins was born Dec. 12, 1905, in Beattie, Comanche County and raised in Snyder. Her love of teaching began at an early age and she worked as a teacher’s assistant in Scurry County rural schools. She graduated from Abilene Christian University with a major in elementary education. She taught in Seagraves, Eastland and Pecos and joined the Ector County Independent School District in 1945, retiring in 1971.
Miss Huggins was a member of the National Teacher’s, Texas Teacher’s and Retired Teacher’s associations, and a member of Delta Kappa Gamma. She was also a member of the Eisenhower Church of Christ.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Ella Huggins; two brothers, Eugene and Noah Huggins; and three sisters, Clarice Kelly, Vivian Huggins, and Myra Chapmond.
She is survived by two nieces; several great nieces and nephews; and close friends, Mildred Wharton, Joyce Bell, Sue Wright, Christie Vandever and members of the Eisenhower Church of Christ.
The family would like to thank the staff of Parks Retirement Village, Lincoln Tower and Nurses Unlimited for the love and care they provided Leora.
Family visitation will be from 11 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 27, at Wright Colonial Funeral Home.
Lloyd P. Mitchell
ODESSA — Lloyd P. Mitchell, age 77, a longtime resident of Odessa, passed away Friday, July 23, 2004, at Medical Center Hospital.
He was born Aug. 10, 1926, to Will and Ethel Mitchell in Whitewright, Texas.
He married
Mildred Mae Donahue on June 16, 1950, in Odessa. She preceded him in death on Dec. 9, 2003.
He was a trick roper for Hardin Simmons University Cowboy Band and served in the Merchant Marines. He sold insurance in Odessa for over 30 years and also served as an Elder at Parkview Church of Christ for 15 years.
Survivors include his daughter, Sharon Ritchie and husband Allen of Belton; and two grandchildren, Alyse and Andrew; and a sister, Irene Warren of Cibolo, Texas.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, July 26, 2004, at Parkview Church of Christ with Dennis Dillon officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
There will be a family visitation from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. today at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
