Peggy L. Wallace
MIDLAND — Peggy Louise Wallace, of Midland, Texas, passed away Tuesday, June 15, 2004.
She was born July 8, 1944, to Derk Fredrick Van Maanen, Jr. and Renee Marie Abbe Van Maanen in Dallas, Texas. Peggy was raised and educated in Odessa, Texas, graduating from Permian High School in 1962. She also attended Odessa College and American Commercial College. Prior to her retirement in 1998, Peggy had been employed with Texaco in Midland, Texas, for 30 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Johnny Van Maanen.
Peggy is survived by her children, J. Don Wallace of Midland, Texas, Robert Wallace and his wife, Michelle, of Midland, Texas, Lynne Wallace of Rock Springs, Wyo., and Cary Wallace and his wife, Wendy, of Seattle, Wash.; the father of her children and lifetime friend, Dennis A. Wallace of Midland, Texas; grandchildren, Brittanie Brittain of Midland, Texas, Paige and Bailee Wallace of Midland, Texas, Jackson Peterson of Rock Springs, Wyo., and Myka and Crayson Wallace of Seattle, Wash.; and aunt and uncle, Louise and R.E. Frederick of Cedar Hill, Texas.

Barbara Ann Trenchard
KERMIT — Barbara Ann Trenchard of Kermit, Texas, passed away on June 14, 2004, in Houston, Texas, after a long, courageous battle with breast cancer. Funeral services will be held at First United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. June 17, 2004. Barbara was born July 18, 1952, in Odessa, Texas, and grew up in Andrews, Texas. She was a homemaker who was a loving wife and devoted mother. She freely volunteered her time to school activities and her church. She was a joy to be around, always full of life and a true friend to many.
She is survived by her loving family, her husband of 28 years, Bob Trenchard; son, Trey Trenchard; stepson, Todd Trenchard and wife, Kimberly Trenchard; granddaughter, Skye Trenchard; stepdaughter, Jill Trenchard; parents, J.T. and Maxine Jones; brothers, Michael Jones, Glenn Jones, and Doug Jones; sister, Elaine Garrison; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews, as well as many good friends.
The family thanks all her friends for their support, prayers and kindness during her last illness and special thanks to Brenda McDiffitt, who was by her side giving care and comfort the last six weeks of her life in Houston. Also, special thanks to our minister, Beth Harrington, and to Beverly Lovell, who was always there for us, including caring for our home and Barbara’s beloved cat, Tipper, during Barbara’s treatment.

Bettie Sue Cook
LOMETA — Bettie Sue Cook, 77, of Lometa, passed away Thursday, June 17, 2004, at her residence.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 20, 2004, at First Baptist Church of Lometa with the Revs. John Ellis, Doyle Combs, Sam Crosby and Taylor Norman officiating. Burial will be in Hines Chapel cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Dodson-Sneed Funeral Home.
Bettie was born Oct. 30, 1926, at Nix Community to K.L. Lindsey and the former Pearl Walker. She grew up in the Nix Community before moving to the Lometa area in 1941. On May 29, 1943, she married
Henry Eugene Cook in Mills County. He died March 12, 2003. Mrs. Cook lived in Goldsmith, Texas from 1957 until 1982 when they returned to Lometa. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in both Goldthwaite and Lometa. Bettie enjoyed gardening, yard work, crocheting and canning. Mrs. Cook was a member of the First Baptist Church of Lometa.
She is preceded in death by her husband; her parents; three brothers; and one great-grandson.
She is survived by daughters, Betty Brown of Leander, Nancy Timmons of Commanche, Pearline Halsell of Bryan and Carol Cook of Somerville; son, Lynn Cook of San Angelo; sisters, Orean Porter and Wanda Payne, both of Lampasas, Lue Pruett of Mead, Okla., and Bea Templeton of Austin; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
James Phillip Fouche Sr.
ODESSA — James Phillip Fouche Sr., 82, of Odessa, Texas, passed away June 14, 2004, at Medical Center Hospital.
Phil Fouche Sr. was born Aug. 14, 1921, in Atlanta, Texas, to James Herbert and Fannie Hardy McCoy Fouche. He graduated from Atlanta High School in 1938 and went on to East Texas State University. He volunteered to serve in World War II in 1942 and trained with the British Commando of British 8th Army. Phil participated in the North African Campaign: with Battles of Fon Duke Pass, Faide Pass, Casserine Pass, Hill 609, Hill 507 and Hill 490. His company joined the U.S. 5th Army and continued in the Invasion of Italy. On Jan. 9, 1944, Phil was shot at The Battle of Monte Cassino, in Cassino, Italy, with the US Army Company I, 133rd infantry, and 34th Division for which he received the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. This invasion ultimately freed Monte Cassino from German occupation. He then went on to participate on the Bond Tour raising money for the troops.
On May 18, 1947, Phil married
Chrystal Walker in Atlanta, Texas. They moved to Hobbs, N.M., where their two children, James Phillip Jr. and Lynn Francis, were born. From Abilene, the family moved to Odessa in June of 1958. Phil Fouche Sr. worked for Totco, Fidelity Oil, Industrial Oil, Frank’s Fuel and was employed by Eddins-Walcher at the time of his death.
Phil was an active member of First United Methodist Church, Permian Booster Club, Texas A&M Twelfth Man Foundation and was a 32nd Degree Mason. His focus was his family and everything they were involved in. if there was a game, recital, concert, program or any other activity involving family or friends, he was a part of it. Phil’s gentleness, loving spirit, happy whistle and positive nature will be missed. No Permian or Texas A&M game will ever be the same without his cheerleading!
James Phillip Fouche Sr.’s parents preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife, Chrystal Walker Fouche of Odessa; son, James Phillip Fouche Jr. and wife Cindy of Odessa; and daughter, Lynn Fouche Correa and husband Randy of Odessa. He has six grandchildren, Todd Phillip Fouche and wife Melissa of Frisco, Andy Fouche of Washington, D.C., Ashlee Correa Thompson and husband Joe Dee of Odessa, Jody Hopkins of Frisco, Nathan Hopkins of Frisco and Johnny Hopkins of Lubbock; and one great-grandchild, Tatum Grace Fouche of Frisco.
Family visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, June 20, 2004, at Frank Wilson Funeral Directors. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, June 21, 2004, at First United Methodist Church.

John Paul “J.P.” Hartman
KERMIT — John Paul “J.P.” Hartman, 27, of Kermit, passed away Tuesday, June 15, 2004, in Kermit. He was born Aug. 9, 1976, in El Paso, Texas. He was employed as a roughneck.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at First United Methodist Church in Kermit, Texas. Interment will follow at Kermit cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Heather Hartman; sons, Lee Hartman, Christian Hartman and Zachary Hartman, all of Kermit, Texas; brother, Jason Bliss of Kermit, Texas.; and sisters, Angel Partain of Kermit, Texas., and Melissa Roberts of Snyder, Texas. Also surviving him are his father, Arnold Roy Hartman of Alaska, and stepfather, Lee Partain of Kermit, Texas.; mother, Marci Bliss and her husband, Jimmy, of Kermit, Texas.; and grandparents, Joe and Maria Valerio of El Paso, Texas., Doug and Martha Ford of New Jersey, Ruby Bliss of Kermit, Texas, and Andy and Betty Partain of Kermit, Texas.

W.F. “Nick” Nobles Jr.
McCAMEY — W.F. “Nick” Nobles Jr., 88, of McCamey, our beloved husband, father, and friend, passed away Wednesday, June 16, 2004, at his home in McCamey.
Graveside services with Military Honors will be held at 10 a.m. today in the Resthaven cemetery in McCamey with the Rev. Mike Wright officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be Marvin King, Henry Watson, Coy Lynch, Bill Long, Wayne Smith, Coy Coe, Jack Anderson, Paul Tims, Pete Mitchell, Tracy Beams, Jon Armstrong, Pat Thompson and Charles McDonald.
Arrangements are under the direction of Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home.
Nick was born Jan. 30, 1916, in Tow, Texas, and it was there in Tow, that he graduated from a small one-room schoolhouse. With war on the horizon, he enlisted in the U.S. Army on Oct. 14, 1940. Through due diligence and determination, he graduated from officers training school in Fort Sill, Okla., and went on to become a 1st Lieutenant in the 746th Field Artillery Battalion, 90th Armored Division. He courageously served in Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes, Normandy and Central Europe. During his time of service he was awarded the American Campaign Medal, Pistol and Rifle marksman badge, European Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, World War II Honorable Service Button, Silver Star Medal, and was Honorably Discharged April 1, 1953.
He married
Marie Smith on June 11, 1943, in Henderson, Texas. The oilfield brought him and his family to West Texas., in 1951, where he was a foreman in the oilfield before his retirement. He was an avid golfer, fisherman and hunter. One of the things he loved most was golf and in 1996, the McCamey Country Club honored him with a lifetime membership and the Annual “Nick Nobles Invitational Four Man Scramble”.
Nick was preceded in death by a son, Robert “Bobby” Nobles.
He is survived by his wife, Marie Nobles of McCamey; two daughters, Carolynd Winfield of San Angelo and Nell Anderson and her husband, Henry, of Crane; a son, Mike Nobles and his wife, Angelina, of El Paso; a very special daughter-in-law, Heidi Nobles Pack of Merkel, Texas.; three sisters, L.V. Delz, Zula Mae Orminston and Ann Brown, all of Kingsland; and a brother, Earl Nobles, also of Kingsland; seven grandchildren, Ray Winfield and his wife, Shannon, Sterling Winfield, Denise Palmer and her husband, Jim, Debbie Rowland and her husband, Jay, Shawnett Guiterrez and her husband, Gabe, Jennifer Nobles, and Ashley Anderson; and five great-grandchildren.
In his 88 years of life, he was a friend to many. He earned the love and trust of friends and above all, his family. He was a man always willing to help a friend and will be sorely missed by all whose life he touched.
Henry R. Rodriguez
ODESSA — Henry R. Rodriguez, 39, passed away Friday, June 18, 2004, at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa.
Mr. Rodriguez was born July 5, 1964, in Lamesa, Texas, to father Eufracio Rodriguez and mother Julia Reyes Rodriguez. Henry was Catholic.
You can view Mr. Rodriguez from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. today at Martinez Funeral Home and from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday, with a rosary being said at 7 p.m. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, June 21, 2004, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Joe Uecker officiating. Burial will follow at the Ector County cemetery in the Rose Hill Section.
He is survived by his son, Henry Rodriguez Jr. of Dallas; two daughters, Melinda R. Rodriguez of Ft. Worth and Monica Rodriguez of Odessa; his parents, Eufracio and Julia Rodriguez, both of Odessa, maternal grandparents, Ysidro and Emma Reyes, both of Odessa; paternal grandmother, Concepion C. Rodriguez of Beeville; and three brothers, Ruben Rodriguez, Eufracio Rodriguez and Paul Rodriguez, all from Odessa.

Von Dale Stafford
CARLSBAD, N.M. — Von Dale Stafford, 47, of Pebble Hill Road, Carlsbad, N.M., passed away Wednesday, June 16, 2004, at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock, Texas.
Von Dale Stafford was born in Dexter, Mo., Saturday, Oct. 20, 1956. He attended school in Missouri before moving to Carlsbad in 1974. He had worked as a “worm” (floorhand) on a Tri-Service Drilling rig for “Cooney” Phillips. On June 20, 1975, he married
Sharon Howell. In 1976, he joined the U.S. Army to become a diesel mechanic but instead was trained as an MP. He was honored to serve on the security force at President Jimmy Carter’s inauguration. While in the service, his daughter Monica Lynette was born and just six months later, his father passed away. Following his discharge from the service in 1979, he moved his family to Casper, Wyo., Elk City, Okla., Wheeler, Texas, and Fort Stockton, Texas, where his son Stacy was born. He spent five years working for Horizon Potash and on his days off he worked in the oil patch. Von then spent several years working offshore in the Gulf of Mexico and St. Johns Bay, Canada. He was actually working in the Gulf on an offshore rig when Hurricane Earl hit. In all he spent 30 years working for the oil industry, and he loved every minute of it. His hobbies included restoring old “muscle cars” and doing just about anything with his hands that required skill and ingenuity. He loved his family, both his natural and his in-laws and enjoyed the time he was able to spend with them at work or at play. Dale was married
to his loving wife Sharon for just four days short of 29 years.
He is preceded in death by his father, Hugh Edward Stafford.
He is survived by his wife, Sharon Stafford of the family home; daughter, Monica Lynette Stevens and husband, Justin, of Carlsbad, N.M.; mother, Georgia Stafford Mings of Perry, Okla.; brothers, Glenn Stafford and wife, Darla, of Mountain View, Mo., Charles Stafford of Willow Springs, Mo., Wayne Stafford and wife, Becky, of Carlsbad, N.M., and Frank Stafford and wife, Jenny, of Odessa, Texas; sisters, Christine Hayes and husband, Jack, of Bernie, Mo., and Frances Blocker and husband, David, of Perry, Okla.; sister-in-law, Terrie Cummings and husband, Mike, of Alamogordo, N.M.; five grandsons, Andrew Douglas Costello, Richard Dean Costello, Kevin Stevens, Brycen Lane Stafford and Preston Dale Stafford; and 12 nieces, eight nephews and numerous cousins.
He lay in state from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, June 18, 2004, at Denton-Funchess Funeral Home. A graveside service will be at 9 a.m. today at Carlsbad cemetery with J.T. Ross of Artesia Church of Christ officiating. Denton-Funchess Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Pallbearers are Stacy Stafford, Tyler Stafford, Jeremy Stafford, Justin Stevens, Shawn Cummings and Justin Cummings. Honorary pallbearer is E.T. Murphy.
Viola Hoffman Butcher
KINGSLAND — Viola Hoffman Butcher, 90, beloved mother, Nana and great-grandmother, a resident of Odessa since 1950, went to be with the Lord on June 17, 2004. She was born Jan. 2, 1914, in Brooklyn, N.Y. She married
Woodrow G. Butcher, July 12, 1937, in Perry, Okla. They were married
for 58 years.
Viola was a registered nurse who worked for the hospital for 15 years and retired from Dr. Sherrod’s office after 15 additional years. She was a member of Northside Baptist Church. She is preceded in death by her husband, twin brother George Hoffman, and brother Ralph Neill.
She is survived by her loving daughter and best friend Judy Washburn and her most loved son-in-law Walter of Burnet; granddaughters, Lori Washburn of Lubbock, Lisa Rogers and husband Roger of Tomball, and Leslie Taylor and husband Jay of Odessa; five great-grandchildren, Morgan and Mason Rogers of Tomball, Addison, Ashton, and Allison Taylor of Odessa.
The family will receive friends between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. today at Hubbard Kelly Funeral Home.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday, June 21, 2004 at Hubbard Kelly Funeral Home with the Rev. Clydell Chapman officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
