Carolyn K. Standefer
ODESSA — Carolyn K. Standefer, 62, of Odessa, went to be with our Lord on Friday, March 19, 2004, in Odessa.
She was born July 16, 1941, in Kermit, Texas, to Woodrow Wilson and Sue Ann Johns.
Carolyn married
Edward Standefer on July 12, 1993, in Odessa. She was a very loving woman and was extremely dedicated to her family. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and faithfully attended their extra curricular functions. Carolyn never met a stranger and had a way of putting a smile on everyone’s face everywhere she went. She will be deeply missed.
Carolyn is preceded in death by her mother and father, Sue Ann and Woodrow Johns; brother, Donnie Johns; and great-granddaughter Chasyti Page.
She is survived by her husband, Edward Standefer of Odessa; stepson, Clay Standefer of Brownwood, Texas; daughters, Tammy Neatherlin and husband Leonard of Odessa, Kandie L. Lockhart and husband Michael of North Ben, Ore., and Connie Kinney of Odessa; brother, Charles W. Johns of Evant, Texas; grandchildren, Chris Terry, Kristy Terry, Ashley Neatherlin, Blake Neatherlin, Justin Bates, Jared Kinney, Aaron Kinney and Sean Kinney; and great-grandchildren, Kaylynn Terry, Kayli, Page, Hunter Page and McKenzie Blake.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 23, 2004, at the Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors Chapel with the Rev. Paul Thompson officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens

H.E. ‘Whitey’ Starnes
ODESSA — H.E. “Whitey” Starnes passed away March 18, 2004, at Hospice House in Odessa. He was 83.
The family will receive guests at the funeral home on from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday evening. Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, March 22, at Rosehill cemetery with Rev. Paul Thompson officiating.
Whitey was born Sept. 9, 1921, in Homer, La., to Sanford B. and Elnora Blackwell Starnes. He served in the Army and fought in Normandy in World War II. During this conflict, Whitey received the American Theater Campaign Ribbon, EAME Campaign Ribbon with two Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal and the Purple Heart. While in the service, Whitey met Genowefa Dambraska of Poland. They were married
Dec. 29, 1945, in Alsace-Lorraine, France. She preceded him in death in 2002.
Whitey’s greatest love outside of his family, was the oilfield. He began working in it when he was 13 years old and stayed with it for more than 20 years, before going to work for General Tire where he worked for another 20 years. Whitey had a great sense of humor and loved a good joke. In his spare time, Whitey loved spending time with his family and he enjoyed fishing. He will forever be remembered as a hard worker and devoted family man.
He is survived by his daughter, Mary Vanderburg and husband Danny of Odessa; son, Raymond Starnes and wife Barbara of Odessa; sisters, Eloise Vickers of Brownwood and Naomi Sumeral of Temple; two grandchildren, Blaine Vanderburg and wife Krista and Nathan Vanderburg; and one great-grandchild, Lilly Vanderburg.
The family requests that memorials be directed to Hospice House of Odessa.

William T. Thorman
Long Island, N.Y. — William T. Thorman, 81, died suddenly in his home May 15, 2004. Bill, previously of Woodside, N.Y., had been a transplanted Texan for 20 years.
He served in the Navy during World War II, worked for the postal service until retirement and then he and his wife moved to Odessa. Bill worked for various Kent and Texaco convenience stores after moving to Odessa.
He loved sports. He was a Texan at heart, but he loved his New York Yankees and Jets. He was devoted to his wife, Ellen, who has Alzheimer’s.
He is survived by his wife, Ellen of Odessa; brother, George Thorman of New York; sisters, Dorothy CaFarelle, Lucille Kruper and Maureen Cotone; granddaughter, Heather; daughter-in-law, Cynthia; 18 nieces and nephews of Long Island, N.Y.; and five nieces and nephews of Odessa.
Services were held in Long Island, N.Y. May 25, 2004.
Mozelle McDonald Akins
DENISON — A funeral service for Mozelle McDonald Akins, 90, of Denison, who died April 14, 2004, at her home will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 16, 2004, at Faith Fellowship Baptist Church in Denison. Pastor Russell Clemons and Dr. Joe Dee Ray will officiate. Burial will be in the Cedarlawn Memorial Park under the direction of Bratcher Funeral Home.
Mozelle was born Feb. 2, 1914, in Hillsboro, Texas, the daughter of William and Mabelle McDonald. She grew up in Hillsboro and married
the love of her life on March 30, 1935, and was the devoted wife of Carl C. Akins for 61 years, a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and a caregiver to all with whom she came in contact. A lifelong Baptist, she taught 5-year-olds in Sunday School for years before spending 19 years as a kindergarten teacher who taught with love, discipline and music. She reared three children in Dallas, Denison and Odessa before retiring to Denison in 1989.
Mozelle and Carl enjoyed 22 years of retirement together by traveling, entertaining friends and working faithfully in their church homes. She will be remembered as faithful, loving and passionate in all that she did. She was a perfect example of what it means to pray without ceasing and to trust God in all circumstances.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1996. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Charlynn Whalen and husband, Harold, of Kerrville, Texas, and Leah Young and husband, Bob, of Garland, Texas; one son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Dana Akins of Denison; eight grandchildren and spouses, Kathy Hunt and husband, Dale, of Kerrville, Russell Whalen and wife, Georgia, of Tulsa, Okla., Micki Jenschke and husband, Kenneth, of Kerrville, Lori Waggoner and husband, Robin, of Carrollton, Texas, Lana Hough and husband, Greg, of Allen, Texas, Carl Akins and wife, Lori, of Sherman, Texas, Jazen Miranda and husband, Ray, of Fort Worth, Texas, and Landon Akins of Denison;
12 great-grandchildren, Christopher and Ryan Bowman, Danny Hunt, Cody and Corey Jenschke, all of Kerrville, April Whalen of Tulsa, Drew and Conner Waggoner of Carrollton, Lucas and Logan Hough of Allen, Skylar Akins of Sherman and Clayton Miranda of Fort Worth.
Pallbearers will be the grandsons, Russell Whalen, Carl Akins, Landon Akins, Dale Hunt, Kenneth Jenschke, Robin Waggoner, Greg Hough and Ray Miranda.
The family will be at the funeral home from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. today and at other times at 10 Ambassador Court in Denison. The family requests that memorials be made to the Faith Fellowship Baptist Church, Denison, Texas, or to the Carl C. and Mozelle Akins Scholarship Fund at Grayson County College, Denison, Texas.

Ruth DeBerry
MIDLAND — Our precious mother, Ruth Lorena DeBerry, was reunited with Daddy on Tuesday, April 13, 2004.
Mrs. DeBerry was born January 23, 1910, in Mount Vernon, Texas, to Charles S. and May Swarts Widner. In March, 1941, she married
Vernon I. DeBerry in Stanton. They were married
59 years at the time of Vernon’s death in 2001.
She started her career as a hairdresser and salon owner in Stanton. She was also active in the family business as owners and operators of DeBerry’s Humble Service in Odessa. They moved to Midland in 1973.
She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She dedicated her life to helping others and enjoyed cooking, crafting and caring for her family, many friends and neighbors. She practiced her faith by her daily Bible study and devotionals.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, two sisters and two brothers.
Survivors include her son, Tony DeBerry and his wife, Pat, of Midland; daughters, Kay DeBerry of Midland, Julia Shaver and her husband, Billy Ed, of China Spring, Texas; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held Thursday, April 15, 2004, at Ellis Funeral Home between the hours of 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Graveside services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday, April 16, 2004, at Resthaven Memorial Park with the Reverend Bob Porterfield officiating.
Honorary pallbearers are Clark DeBerry, Jeremy Shaver, Aaron Kwan, Jack Dane, Ian Page and Ernie White. Arrangements are under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home, 801 Andrews Hwy. Midland, Texas.

John M. Dennison
KIMERLING CITY — John M. Dennison, Branson West, Mo., son of Clifford and Edith (Carty) Dennison, was born May 3, 1929, in Maitland, Mo., and departed this life March 24, 2004, in his home at the age of 74 years, 10 months and 21 days.
John graduated in 1947 from the Odessa High School in Odessa, Texas. In 1958, he graduated from Southeast Missouri State University with a B.S. Degree in Marketing and was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity. He served in Korea during the Korean Conflict with Fox Company, 14th Regiment, 25th Division and discharged with the rank of Sergeant First Class. John retired from the Missouri State Highway Department, Springfield, Mo., in 1982 after 22 years where he was the Chief Appraiser in the Right of Way Department and he was a senior member of the International Right of Way Association since 1976. John was a life member of the American Legion Post #637 in Kimberling City. He was also a member of Gate of the Temple Lodge #422, the York Rite Bodies and Abou Ben Adhem Temple of Springfield, Mo.
Survivors include one son, David Averitt of Red Oak, Texas; one sister, Marcella Appleton of Springfield, Mo.; two grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
A private family service will be held at a later date in Missouri Veterans cemetery, Springfield. Cremation was under the direction of Stumpff Funeral Home South, Kimberling City.
Kerry Wayne Fletcher
ODESSA — Kerry Wayne Fletcher, 34, formerly of Odessa, Texas, and his wife of five years, Stephanie Johnson Fletcher, 29, were fatally injured in a highway accident Saturday, April 10, 2004.
Kerry’s family was his life and his son, Dalton Wayne, 10, and daughter, Hailey Madison, 4, were the source of his pride and drive to be a good father and husband and to provide for them his company Dirtworks, a grading and construction operation. He was the son of Merle Wayne and Linda Fletcher of Odessa. Wayne Fletcher preceded his son in death April 5, 1982.
Kerry attended Odessa schools and was active in sports. He attended Permian High School until he moved to North Carolina in 1988, where he graduated from Central Wake in Raleigh, N.C. Kerry was a U.S. Army Ranger with the 82nd Airborne and was a veteran of Desert Storm.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 16, 2004, at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Johnny Dickerson officiating. Burial with Military Honors by the VFW will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
He is survived by his son, Dalton Wayne Fletcher of the home; his daughter, Hailey Madison Fletcher of the home; his mother and stepfather, Linda and Dwight Adams of Raleigh; brothers, Keven Che Adams of Charlotte and Justin Ian Adams of Orlando, Fla.; grandparents, Sue and DeWitt Bobbitt of Odessa, Texas; aunts and uncles, Sammie and Lee Hamilton and Judy and Rick Ellison of Odessa, Texas, Roy and Kathy Bobbitt of Odessa, Texas, Marvin Wade of Oklahoma and Doyle Wade of California; cousins, Pat and Rex Massey, Rexanne Wier, Doug Massey, Gail Pool, all of Odessa, Jan and Vernon Camp, Deana Glaze, Keith Camp, Rikka Ellison Will Hodges and Jordana Hodges.
Pallbearers will be Kerry’s cousins: Brian Hamilton, Joe Hamilton, Jeff Hamilton, Brice Ellison, Blacke Ellison and Nathan Bobbitt.

Walter Earl ‘Sam’ McKinnie
LUBBOCK — It is said that when life begins, it is like an open book with many blank pages. Each day as we live, our deeds are recorded page by page until we close our eyes in death and await that great getting up morning.
The pages of this book began for Walter Earl “Sam” McKinnie when he was born August 27, 1957, to M.J. and Bobbie McKinnie in Odessa, Texas.
He attended elementary school in Odessa, Texas, and later attended Struggs Junior High and graduated in 1976 from Dunbar High School.
Walter “Sam” began cooking at the age of 16. He continued his career in cooking for 26 years.
He met and married
Maxine Jackson on August 27, 1998.
His parents, grandparents and three sons preceded him in death.
The final pages of this book for Walter “Sam” ended on April 10, 2004.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Maxine McKinnie; one son, Bryant E. McKinnie of Denver, Colo.; three daughters, Kaleigh of Dallas, Texas, Skyler of Mesquite, Texas, and Bobbie Lee of Lubbock; one sister, Angie Wilson of Lubbock, Texas; a stepsister, Patricia McGree of Dallas, Texas; one brother, Robert Wingwood of Tacoma, Wash.; two granddaughters, Tiara and A’Kia; one grandson, Kylan; three nephews, Donavon of Waco, Texas, Robert Jermaine of Colorado City, Michael of Lubbock; five brothers-in-law and two sisters-in-law; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Wake services will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 16, 2004, at Brock’s South Plains Chapel. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Lyons Chapel Baptist Church.
