William Loyd Gaskins
ODESSA — Bill Gaskins lived well for 78 years and passed peacefully from this earth on Feb. 22, 2004, in the company of his loving and beloved wife, Inez, and their loving and beloved son, Matt.
William Loyd Gaskins was born July 22, 1925, in Harleton, Texas, to a large and lively family. He was one of nine brothers and sisters. He grew up in Marshall, Texas, and graduated from Marshall High School in 1943, where he lettered in three sports and caught passes thrown by Y.A. Tittle.
He enlisted in and was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy and served two tours in the Merchant Marines.
The G.I. bill enabled him to continue his education at East Texas Baptist College, where he met and began courting Inez White. They married
soon after and moved to Portales, N.M., where he graduated with a B.A. in education from Eastern New Mexico University.
In the summer of 1948, Bill and Inez moved to Springer, N.M. For three years, Bill taught school and coached football, basketball, baseball, track, boxing and swimming. In the summer of 1951, the family moved back to Texas, and Bill worked in an icehouse for a year before landing a job teaching English and coaching football and drama at Judson Grove High School, in a small town outside Longview. During this time he earned a Master’s Degree in English from East Texas Baptist College.
Seeking opportunity in the oil fields of West Texas, Bill and Inez moved to Odessa in 1955. Never afraid to work, he taught English, drove a school bus, coached junior high football and sold Electolux vacuum cleaners at night.
Bill taught English and Algebra in Ector County Schools for 13 years; students at Bowie, Bonham, Odessa High, and Permian still remember his enthusiasm and skill. He did course work for a Ph.D. in English at North Texas State University in the mid-60s, but at the same time he became fascinated with the stock market, which ultimately spelled the end of his career in education.
In 1968, Bill went to work for Eppler, Guerin & Turner as a stockbroker. His career at three firms in Odessa lasted 33 years, the last 12 of which were with A.G. Edwards. He was known in the business for his integrity, honesty and belief in the stock market and in his clients, many of whom stayed with him for 33 years. He retired in 1991, though he still checked the market every day.
Throughout his life, Bill watched over his two boys, went to all their games, coached Little League, helped with homework and counseled them as they grew up.
He loved and respected his wife for 57 years. He adored his grandchildren. He made many friends and had no enemies. He was quick to laugh, quick to forgive and saw the good in everyone.
We will miss him.
He is survived by his wife, Inez; his two sons, Steve Gaskins of Minneapolis, Minn., and Matt Gaskins of Austin, Texas; and two grandchildren, Luke and Hannah.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday March 1, at the First Presbyterian Church.
Memorials can be made in lieu of flowers to the American Cancer Society or Meals on Wheels, 1313 W. Fifth St., Odessa, TX 79761.
