Truman McCreless

ODESSA — Truman McCreless, long time Odessa resident and founder and owner of the McCreless Company, died June 4, 2004. Born in Colorado City in 1918, he came to Odessa in the mid-30s and graduated from Odessa High in 1938. He attended the University of Texas in Austin and came within one course of graduation.
He met Doreen Ferguson at a church event in Odessa in 1938 and they were married in 1942. They settled permanently in Odessa in 1946. He began the McCreless Company in the same year and did photo-engraving work for area newspapers and printers. In 1952, he purchased the building next door to the company’s present location at 1318 N. Grant.
In the early 50s, improvements in the photo-reproduction business eliminated the need for photo-engravers and on the recommendation of a friend, he learned about screen-process printing. He built his own equipment and started making decals in 1954, a business which continues to be central to the McCreless Company to this day – along with flags and advertising specialties. He was completely committed to the company and its employees who knew him affectionately as “Mr. Mac.”
Mr. McCreless was an active member of the First United Methodist Church for as long as he was in Odessa. It was important for his entire family who, as someone remarked, attended “every time the door was open.” For many years he was involved in youth programs and said that “all phases of youth work were usually satisfying, sometimes discouraging, but always productive.” He was also a founding member of the Brown Bag Lunch, which met on Monday at noon for Bible study and was a favorite activity each week.
One of the things he enjoyed most was music. He sang bass in the First Methodist choir for 64 years. He said, “I can’t remember not singing. My sister Lurlene and I sang duets in church when we were still small children.” He played trumpet in the band when he was in high school and at the age of 80, he took up the mountain dulcimer and learned to play some of his favorite hymns and folk tunes. He loved going to concerts and was proud that his sons and grandchildren were musically talented.
Computers held a great fascination for him as well. Although the “computer revolution” came late in his life, he became an avid user – in both his personal and professional life. He enjoyed finding innovative ways to use computer technology in his business as well as tracking his investments, and sending and receiving e-mail with far-flung family members. In 1998, he had a pacemaker installed and he amazed everyone by setting up his laptop and using it throughout his hospital stay.
Mr. McCreless died during a brief respite stay at Hospice House. He noted that his first job out of OHS in 1938 was working as a laborer in the construction of the house and he thought it quite ironic that he would return there so many years later.
He leaves his wife, Doreen McCreless; his sister, Lurlene Collum of Odessa; and two sons and their families, Jack McCreless, Janet Nelson and their daughter Elizabeth of Winchester, Massachusetts and Pat and Linda McCreless of New Haven, Connecticut and their children Michael and Erin.
A memorial service will be held at the First United Methodist Church at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 8. Those wishing to make a donation in Mr. McCreless’s memory could make it to the Sanctuary Choir of the church or their preferred charity.
