Robert Roy ‘Bob’ Shelden
ODESSA — Robert Roy “Bob” Shelden, 59, of Odessa, a retired Senior Piping Designer, died at Hospice House on Sunday, April 11, 2004, after a brief illness.
Born May 21, 1944, in Lake Charles, Louisiana, he was the only child of Beatrice (Hawkins) and the late Robert Shelden. Bob attended schools in Louisiana and Texas and began his career in petrochemical and refinery process design in Houston. He earned a reputation for being fast, accurate, innovative and having the ability to bring heavy design projects in ahead of schedule and under budget. Contract assignments took him from Alaska to Aruba and fueled his spirit of adventure.
Bob first came to the Permian Basin in the 1970s on a CO2 assignment with Ortloff in Midland. He returned in 1997 with his wife, Barbara Waite, and accepted a direct position at Ref-Chem in Odessa. When Ref-Chem began downsizing he returned to contracting. He retired last year.
An avid Louisiana State University fan, Bob loved all things Cajun, cars, history, miniatures and woodworking.
Surviving are his wife, Barbara Waite, and mother-in-law, Margaret Waite, both of Odessa; mother, Beatrice Garland, and sister, Catherine Garland, both of Spring; sister, Brenda Haltom and her husband, George, of Humble; brother, Terry Garland Jr. of Fairfield, Iowa; four children and five grandchildren, including Porsche Shelden of Midland.
Memorial services will be out of town at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, the family recommends donations to the Hospice House Foundation, Inc., 903 N Sam Houston Ave, Odessa, TX 79761.

Tom Hugh Stovell
MIDLAND — Tom Hugh Stovell left this world Wednesday, March 24, 2004, and was reunited with his wife of fifty years, Dorothy Stovell, in our Savior’s Kingdom. He was born April 19, 1919.
Tom was a graduate of Texas A & M University with a degree in Accounting. He exited his military career in World War II as a Major in the Army Air Corps. He was awarded many decorations during his service; his Distinguished Flying Cross was awarded for his valor under enemy fire trying to rescue fellow airmen. This would become a symbol of his personal philosophies throughout the remainder of his life. After leaving the service to his country, Tom was elected to the Texas House of Representatives from Brewster County in 1948 and married
Dorothy Caldwell Schroeder on Texas Independence Day, March 2, 1949. His professional life was in banking and spans most of West Texas including the First National Bank of Alpine, Texas, President of the First National Bank of Fort Stockton, Texas, and Senior Vice President of Commercial Bank and Trust in Midland, Texas.
Tom Stovell completed his duty here as a lifelong student, writer, philosopher, artist, father, grandfather and friend to continue his journey in what he called “the next great frontier.”
He is survived by his son, Steven Charles Schroeder; and his daughter, Cynthia Stovell Choate and her husband, Gary; and five beloved grandchildren.
Tom Stovell’s life will be celebrated in Midland, Texas, on Monday, April 19, 2004, at the First Presbyterian Church Chapel at 1 p.m. There will be an Honorary Flag Ceremony at graveside at the Elm Grove cemetery in Alpine, Texas, on Tuesday, April 20, at 11 a.m.

Nancy Elder Tisdale
ODESSA — Nancy Elder Tisdale, 91, of Midland died Sunday, April 11, 2004, at Midland Memorial Hospital. She was born December 30, 1912, in Falls County, Texas.
Mrs. Tisdale had been a longtime resident of Odessa.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Odessa and a homemaker.
She is survived by her husband, Clyde E. Tisdale of Midland; sons, Barry Tisdale and wife, Helen, of Midland and Marion E. Tisdale and wife, Mary of Abilene; daughter, Jane Smith and husband, Felton, of Odessa; eight grandchildren, Mike Tisdale, Mark Tisdale, Dan Tisdale and Leah Gordon, all of Midland, Jana Horton and Lori Gray of Odessa, Bryan Tripp of Dallas and Andy Tisdale of Hurst; and 17 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 14, 2004, at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel with Charles Hastings and Rev. Linvell Tisdale officiating. Interment to follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Memorials may be made to Meals On Wheels of Odessa or Hospice of Midland.

Syble Elizabeth McAlister
ODESSA — Syble Elizabeth McAlister, 82, of Odessa passed away Friday, May 7, 2004, at Hospice House.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 11, 2004, at Hopewell Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Hopewell, Miss.
Burial will be at Hopewell cemetery.
A local visitation will be held 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, May 8, 2004, at Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors in Odessa.
She was born June 2, 1921, in Benton County, Miss., to Adolphus Keener and Gertie May McKee Proctor.
She is survived by her son, Dr. Craig Martindale and wife, Dana, of Odessa; grandchildren, Craig Martindale Jr. and wife Frances, Kellie Martindale and Brian Burnette; sister-in-law, Edna Earl Proctor; and several nieces and nephews.
Services entrusted to Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors.
Ruth Irene Kilian Namken
ODESSA — Ruth Irene Kilian Namken, 82, of Odessa, passed away Wednesday, April 5, 2004, at Parks Methodist Retirement Village.
She was born November 1, 1921, in Giddings, Texas, to her parents Pastor Theodore and Martha Proske Kilian. She graduated from high school in Giddings.
She came to Odessa in 1946 from Vernon, Texas. She married
Milton J. Namken on April 20, 1941, in Giddings, Texas. He passed away August 9, 1981. She was a homemaker. She had been a member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church since 1946 where she was also involved in the Braille ministry.
She is survived by her son, Larry Namken of Odessa, and her daughter Kathy King and husband James of Odessa, her 3 grandchildren, Jason King of Odessa, Dustin King and wife Melissa of Flower Mound, Amanda Morris of Austin and great-granddaughter Katie King of Flower Mound.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, April 8, 2004, at Redeemer Lutheran Church with Rev. Dean Kelm officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers are Bill Hetzler, Jim McClelland, Bob Syner, Tim Hewitt, Pastor Don Rosentreter and Walter Schneider, honorary pallbearers, Jason King, Dustin King, Leland Morris, Pastor Jerry Bagwell and Wilburn Rosentreter.

Thelma Jean ‘Jeanne’ Baker
ODESSA — Thelma Jean “Jeanne” Baker, 70, passed away Saturday, May 22, 2004, at her residence.
She was born June 9, 1933, in Fort Worth, Texas. She was a caring person who lived in Rising Star most of her adult life and in Odessa where she retired from Bank of America.
Her father, Lloyd Law, and her mother, Jewel Martin, precede her in death.
She is survived by her sons, Chip McCarver and wife Christina of Midland and Don McCarver and wife Martha of Longmont, Colo.; grandchildren, Michael McCarver, Jonathan McCarver, Josh McCarver and Leah McCarver; great-grandchildren, Jadin McCarver, Micah Cornwell, Judah Cornwell and Greg Cornwell; sisters, Sheri Dyer, Sarah Peeples, Melinda Epistein and Teri Phillips; and brothers, Gail Shell and James Taylor.
Graveside services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday, May 24, 2004, with the Rev. Jimmy Dennis officiating.
The family will receive friends during visitation from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.

Harvey Adams
Harvey Adams, 78, of Odessa, passed away Thursday, May 27, 2004, at the Hospice House. He was born June 18, 1925, in Louann, Ark. He married
Betty Jo Huestis on Dec. 27, 1974, in Odessa.
Mr. Adams was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge and a 32nd degree mason.
He was also a member of the Monahans Eastern Star and a member of Bethany Christian Church in Odessa. He worked for Gulf Oil Co. for 15 years and then went into business for himself. He owned Detecto Specialty from 1975 to 1991.
He served as the National Guard Commander in Monahans for many years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alice Beauregard and Archie Adams and sister, Polly Glidwell.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Adams of Odessa; daughters, Bonita Spivey of Parker, TX., Holly Johnson of Pueblo, Colo., Lynda Reed of Mesquite and Beckie Bailey of Houston; son, Jerry Adams of Midland; sisters, Myrtle Garner of Eunice, N.M., and Susie Blair of Odessa; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, May 30, 2004, at Bethany Christian Church with Dr. Max Browning from Plainview, assisted by the Rev. Gene Brown of Monahans officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Mildred T. Graves
ODESSA — Mildred T. Graves, 90, passed away Thursday, May 27, 2004, at the Hospice House Facility in Odessa, Texas. Mrs. Graves lived in Odessa and was previously from Farmington, N.M.
She was born January 13, 1914, in Vivian, La., to father, Walter T. Turner, and mother, Madge Taylor Turner. Mildred was a homemaker. She loved life and enjoyed many activities including cooking and gardening. She lived an extraordinary life full of vigor. She loved her family and greatly enjoyed their company.
She is survived by: her son, Billy E. Rhea; sister, Billie J. Stewart; granddaughter, Betty Rhea; and grandson, Mike Rhea, all from Odessa, TX,; grandson, Frank Rhea of Houston, TX.; and granddaughter, Dawn Marie Rhea of New Orleans, LA.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
The family would like to express their most sincere thanks and appreciation to Mildred’s caregivers.
Graveside funeral services will be held today, May 29, 2004, at 11 a.m. at Sunset Memorial Gardens cemetery in Odessa with the Rev. Gayle Wilson officiating.
John David Turner
ODESSA — John David Turner went to our Lord on Sunday, May 16, 2004, in Albuquerque, N.M., after a lengthy illness.
He was born May 8, 1955, in Albuquerque. He served in the Navy from 1970 to 1972. He was a roofer and father of three children.
He came to Odessa in 1980 to be closer to his family. He was a beloved father, son and brother. He enjoyed time with his friends and family, and he loved Harley-Davidsons. He will be missed by all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, John McDuff and Virginia McDuff.
He leaves behind three children, Tonya Turner of Tenn., Trevon Turner of Colo. and Sherina Turner of Colo.; his mother, Kathy Terry of Albuquerque; a brother, Jim Chambless and wife, Debbie, of Albuquerque; two sisters, Gina Aley and husband, Sonny, of Odessa and Kathy Massengale and husband, Bobby, of Fort Worth; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, May 30, 2004, at 6414 Fort Worth in Odessa.
