Dalton L. Vick
FORT STOCKTON - Dalton L. Vick, of Lubbock, departed this life on Saturday, July 17, 2004, in Lubbock, TX., at the age of 87 years. He was born February 11, 1917, in Lamesa, TX., to the late Newton Lafayette and Lillie Belle Deaton Vick.
He married
Ruby Beatrice Freitag February 3, 1940, in Fort Stockton. She preceded him in death July 29, 2003. He was a WWII Army veteran who served in the last mounted unit of the 7th Calvary. He was a member of the 1st United Methodist Church in Fort Stockton. He was a longtime rancher in Pecos and Culberson Counties, retiring in 1998.
Those left to mourn his passing include one son, John Dalton Vick of Carlsbad, TX.; two daughters, Patricia Jean “Patty” Banks and husband, Henry, of Wasilla, Alaska and Trudi Johnson and husband, Phillip, of Shallowater; one sister, Maurine Haralson of Fort Worth; six grandchildren, Beth Anne Howard, Aaron Banks, Lindsey Brooke Knobloch, Tye Vick, Michael Vick and Darci Vick; three great-grandchildren, Ashlee Brooke Howard, Kade Knobloch and Samantha Vick; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Formal visitation was held from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, July 19, 2004, at White Funeral Home in Lubbock. Family will greet friends from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 20, 2004, at Fort Stockton Funeral Home in Fort Stockton. Service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 21, 2004, at Fort Stockton Funeral Home Chapel in Fort Stockton. Military graveside service will follow at Easthill cemetery in Fort Stockton. Arrangements in Lubbock and Fort Stockton are under the personal care of White Funeral Home of Lubbock.

Madie Belle Wilson
ODESSA — Madie Belle Wilson, a homemaker, 87, passed away Saturday, July 17, 2004, at her residence in Odessa.
She was born February 13, 1917, to Tom and Ollie Mae Moore in Gorman County, Texas. She married
Fred Oren Wilson Sr. on March 24, 1932, in Athens, TX. They have lived in Odessa for 57 years. They were members of Bethel Assembly of God Church where she taught Sunday School for many years.
She loved to cook for family and friends and was famous for her caramel pies. She enjoyed singing, always saw the good in people, and was always there for her grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Fred Oren Wilson Sr.; her parents; her four sons, Fred Oren Wilson Jr., Tommy Joe Wilson, Don Albert Wilson and Doyle MacArthur Wilson; one infant daughter, three brothers; and one sister.
Survivors include her two daughters, Joyce Stump and husband, William Owen, of Gillette, Wyo., and Gracie Willis and husband, Elmer Dee, of Odessa; 10 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
There will be a family visitation Monday evening from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
Services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 20, 2004, at Hubbard-Kelly Chapel with Bro. Phil Sanders officiating and Bro. Don Swindle assisting. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens with the Rev. John Van Hoose officiating at the graveside.
Pallbearers are Nathan Moseley, Phillip Moseley, William Willis, Charles Varner, Billy Varner and Jonathan Willis.

Pedro ‘Pete’ Almanza
ODESSA — Pedro “Pete” Almanza, 81, passed away, Sunday, July 18 at the Hospice House. He was born April 29, 1923, in Stockdale, TX. He graduated from Rotan High School and attended Barber College in San Antonio, TX., graduating from that college in 1945. He also received certificates in refrigeration, television repair and appliance repair. He married
Hilaria Medrano on June 10, 1944, in Rotan, TX., at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. They had five children together. She preceded him in death on August 14, 2000, in Odessa. Mr. Almanza owned and operated Pete’s Barber Shop on South Clements for 56 years. He was a United States Army veteran. He was a well-known musician. He played the saxophone, piano, trumpet, drums and the guitar and always encouraged others to learn to play music. He wrote music and made several recordings. He also was an artist who painted beautiful landscapes as well as portraits of his grandchildren. His paintings were exhibited for several weeks in an art exhibit at the old First American Bank. He was a charter member of the Basin Lions Club, the American Legion and the Altar Society. He was also a member of LULAC. He was very dedicated to family values and instilled those values in his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He impressed the importance of education to both family and friends.
Survivors include sons, Pete Almanza and wife, Mary Ann, and Benny Almanza, all of Odessa; daughters, Linda Villagran and husband, Jaime, Geneva Holland and husband, Tom, Evelyn Garcia and husband, William and daughter-in-law, Magdalena Cox and husband, Cary, all of Odessa; grandchildren, Elia Goodman and husband, William of El Paso, Jo Ann Ybarra and Shelley Taylor, both of San Antonio and Yvonne Ybarra, Linda Eve Bernadette Garcia, Elizabeth Armendarez and husband, Raul, Marc Almanza, Nicole Almanza, Paul Almanza and wife, Shirley, Pete Almanza III and wife, Cindy, Sonia Almanza and Amy Matta and husband, Mark, all of Odessa and Angela Huertas and husband, David, of Dallas; great-grandchildren, Brandon Ybarra of El Paso and Gage Covernali-Ybarra, Carmen Almanza, Caleb Jordan Almanza, Anthony Almanza, Shane Patterson, Karina Almanza, Kamryn Almanza, Pete Almanza IV, Isaiah Armendarez and Kamilla Armendarez, all of Odessa.
Funeral arrangements are with Odessa Funeral Home. Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Odessa Funeral Home Chapel. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 21, 2004, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Joseph Uecker officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be: Brandon Ybarra, Paul Almanza, Pete Almanza III, Marc Almanza, Raul Armendarez and Jaime Villagran.

Thurman E. Cooper
OKEMAH, Okla. — Thurman E. Cooper, the son of Walter and Leona Avey Cooper, was born September 12, 1920, in Newnata, Ark. His family moved to Okfuskee County, Okla., in 1929, in a Model A Ford. He passed away Monday, July 19 in Odessa.
Thurman graduated from Mason High School in Mason, Okla., and attended Murray State College in Tishimingo, Okla., for two years.
He earned Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in industrial arts education at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Okla.
During World War II, Thurman served three and a half years in the U.S. Navy.
He was an instructor in the Naval Air Gunnery School in Florida. Thurman also flew several missions as the navigator / bombardier on a Curtis Helldiver. He served with the Tactical Division of Bombing Squadron 94 on board the USS Lexington in the South Pacific Theater. Thurman received the Good Conduct Medal, the Air Medal, a Gold Star in lieu of a second Air Medal, a Presidential Unit Citation, the Victory Medal and a Commendation Ribbon for aerial photography.
On December 26, 1950, Thurman married
Etha Rose Franks in Ft. Smith, Ark. They moved to Odessa, TX., in 1952.
He taught for one year in Oklahoma and thirty-one years at Crockett Junior High in Odessa. He also worked as a seasonal employee for the National Park Service in Mount Ranier National Park in Longmire, Washington and in Grand Teton National Park in Jackson, Wyo.
While he was teaching, Thurman was active in the Texas State Teachers Association and the Classroom Teachers Association. He was also a 4-H Club leader in Oklahoma and an adult leader in the Boy Scouts of America in Odessa for ten years.
Thurman was a member of the Odessa / Ector County Retired School Personnel Association, the American Legion, the Nature Conservancy, a life member of the Texas Retired Teachers Association and a Patron of the Charles F. Menninger Society.
Thurman was also a member of the USS Lexington CV 16 Associaton, which hosts annual reunions around the U.S. Thurman and Etha attended many CV 16 reunions.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Leona Avey Cooper and three sisters, Malva Siveley of Luke, MD., Genevra Burke of Trenton, N.J., and Loys Ballard of Okemah, Okla.
Thurman is survived by his wife, Etha of Odessa; his sons, Charles Cooper, Fort Worth, TX., and Mark Cooper of Boerne, TX.; one sister, Thelma Gantz, Ness City, Kan.; and one brother, Grady Cooper, Rolla, Mo.
Thurman will be interred in Okemah, Okla. Services are being coordinated by Parks Funeral Home in Okemah and by Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home in Odessa.
Deana Luker Hurt
ODESSA — Deana Luker Hurt, 81, passed away peacefully, Sunday, July 18, 2004, at her residence in Odessa and joined her beloved “Bud” in eternal bliss. She was born October 3, 1922, in Cuero, TX., to James Robert and Lena Bessie Howe Luker.
Deana married
George Edward Hurt Jr. on August 16, 1942, in Lake Charles, La. He preceded her in death. Deana was a homemaker and a former Model Shop employee.
She is survived by her son, Robert Lee “Bob” Hurt and wife, Linda Lee, of Irving, TX., her daughter, Colette M. Hurt Stepp and husband, Terry Vernon, of China Spring, TX., her daughter, Deana Georganne Hurt McConaughey of Midland, TX., and son, Terry Gene Hurt and wife, Terry Lynn, of Odessa, TX. She also is survived by her three brothers, Marvin Luker of Houston, TX., J.R. Luker of Odessa and Melvin “Teak” Luker of Weesatche, TX.; her sister, Colleen Trautwein of Victoria, TX.; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services are entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home and will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 21, 2004, at Hubbard-Kelly with Lynn Money officiating. Visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, July 20, 2004. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Gene Irwin
ANDREWS — Services for Gene Irwin, 83, of Andrews will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 20, 2004, in Means Memorial United Methodist Church. Officiating will be Dr. Brian Gordon. Burial will follow in the Andrews Old cemetery under the direction of McNett Funeral Home of Andrews.
Gene died in Andrews Saturday, July 17, 2004. He was born June 21, 1921, in Midland, TX. Gene’s parents, Knox Hunter Irwin Sr. and Anna Lee Pinnell Irwin, were Andrews County pioneers. Gene married
Hedy Price in Lovington, N.M., on April 8, 1993. Gene was involved in ranching with his father after being discharged from the Army in 1945. Gene served as commissioner of Precinct Two in Andrews County for twenty-four years. During this time Andrews had a tremendous growth. During his terms, the county parks were developed, the Little League and other ball parks were built. The Community Building, the Youth Center and Scout facilities, the County Golf Course, improvements to the Courthouse, rodeo grounds, airport facilities, were a few of the many projects completed. Gene was honored by the Chamber of Commerce as Man of the Year in 1968. During the time of rearing his children, he and his children received many awards and recognition for their efforts and interest in 4-H and other Extension work. After leaving office as a commissioner in 1974, he expanded his ranching and farming interest. He served on the ASCS Committee and was still an active director (serving for 28 years) on the Andrews Soil and Water Conservation District # 246. Gene was a member of the Means Memorial United Methodist Church.
Survivors include wife, Hedy of Andrews; son, Doug and wife, Terry Irwin, of Andrews; daughters, Susan Irwin Watts of Kerrville, TX., and Lee Ann and husband, Pete Ballew, of Andrews; six grandchildren, Derrick Watts, Max Watts, Coy Irwin, Tanner Ballew, Kacee Ballew and Bailey Ballew Morgan; two great-grandchildren, Conner Watts and Peyton Watts; step-children, Bill Price, Karla Morris, Kay Wood and Claude Price, all of Andrews; 10 step-grandchildren; and 22 step-great-grandchildren.
Gene was preceded in death by his first wife, Virginia Lee Brown Irwin, on November 2, 1987. He was also preceded in death by a grandson, Chris Irwin on November 21, 2003; a brother, Knox Hunter Irwin Jr. in 1991; and a sister, Billie Irwin Edmiston in 1988.

Dr. Narendra Shroff
MIDLAND — Dr. Narendra Shroff, 90, expired at his residence Sunday, July 18. He was born December 16, 1914, in Bombay, India. He graduated from medical school in 1939, then joined the Navy and the Army. He served in World War II and during that time he was stationed in Africa, Egypt and Madagaskar. After serving in the Army, he started his medical and dental practice in Banglore, India. In 1982, he retired from his practice and came to America to live with his son Nick Nipan Shroff and his family and to be close to his daughter Bharati who lived in N.Y. He was married
to Mrs. Ila Shroff for 47 years till she passed away in 1987. He was a very active and alert man, who lived each day with so much enthusiasm and zest. He was a solid pillar of our community. For our Hindu Association of West Texas, he translated and compiled our prayer books of devotional songs, which will continue to be used for years to come. He was intimately involved with various charitable organizations here and abroad. Specifically he was the founder of a high school, enrolling over 1,000 students in Bangalore, India since 1962. The school still bears his name as Narendra High School.
He was a generous man, great father and father-in-law and grandfather too. He always had a smile on his face and was affectionately known as ‘Papa’ by everyone. His will to live was very strong and he survived many major medical and surgical illness. Until his last days his memory and wit were very sharp.
He is survived by his son and his wife, Nick Nipan and Leena Shroff of Midland; his daughter and her husband, Bharati and Bhupendra Randeria, also of Midland; two granddaughters, Reema and her husband, Naveen Kella, and Rita Shroff; his nephews, Himanshu and Manish; and a cast of hundreds of family and extended family members.
We honor his memories with services scheduled for 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 20, 2004, at Nalley-Pickle Funeral Home, 3800 N Big Spring St, Midland, TX, followed by concluding services at Trinity Memorial Park Crematory, 6900 S HW 87, Big Spring, TX. Deborah Joyce Brand
MONAHANS — Deborah Joyce Brand, 46, died at her home in Monahans August 24, 2004. “Deb” was born in Cambridge, England, on October 22, 1957, and came to the United States February 1958. She attended schools in Corpus Christi and Big Spring. She graduated from UTPB Summa Cum Laude with a degree in Sociology. She was a social worker with MHMR for many years.
She is survived by her husband, Darin and beloved stepchildren, Jason Brand, serving with the U.S. Army in Iraq and Ashley of Dallas; step-granddaughter, Naley; her mother and stepfather, Pat and Mike Craddock; her father and stepmother, Bobby and Louisa Smith, of Canyon Lake, Texas. Two brothers, Todd Smith and his wife, Sandie, of Midland and Mark Smith of Coahoma. Nephews, Ian Smith, of Lubbock and Tyler Smith of Midland. Nieces, LeAnne and Ashley Smith of Coahoma and great-niece, Elizabeth. Stepsister, Micki Craddock of San Angelo. Many aunts, uncles and cousins in England and in the United States.
Deb will be cremated and a memorial services will be held pending Jason’s arrival from Iraq.
Don Doughten
ODESSA — Don Doughten, 74, a longtime resident of Odessa, passed away Tuesday, August 24, 2004, at Medical Center Hospital. He was born January 23, 1930, in Eldorado, Okla. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He worked 30 years for El Paso Products. He was a charter member of Sherwood Church of Christ. He married
Marilyn June Fritz August 25, 1994, in Odessa.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jane Doughten in 1993; his parents; two sisters; and two brothers.
Don was called Papa by his family and he is survived by his wife, Marilyn Fritz Doughten of Odessa; son, Kevin Doughten and wife, Robbie, of Buda, Texas; daughter, Debbie Marrs and husband, Tony, of Odessa; stepson, Fred Fritz of Virginia Beach, Va.; stepdaughter, Jenna Jarvis and husband, Rick, of Odessa; and 11 grandchildren, Elisha, Laura, Robert, Kelly, Kaci, Tanis, Deeon, Morgana, Ian, Zane and Gil.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, August 26, 2004, at Sherwood Church of Christ with Lynn Money officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Odessa Christian School.
