Karen Poynor

ODESSA — Karen’s life was like a patchwork quilt. Each square showed the unselfish love and eternal devotion that Karen gave to her family and friends. The center square focused on the loves of her lives – her husband, Steve, and her three boys – Shane, Jarod and Travis. As each son married , Karen added other squares of love for Amanda, Myka and Melissa. As she became a grandmother, a prouder one could not be found! Her Kyla and Anabelle were the joys of her life. She was also excitedly awaiting the birth of her new grandbaby, Mya.
Karen had many interests. She was known for her intricately unique handmade quilts that she would work tirelessly sewing for special friends and family members. Karen received her Master Gardener certificate and was proud of her involvement with their organization. Karen’s gardens were truly a masterpiece in which she spent many hours nurturing and caring for her plants. Karen also enjoyed baking all types of goodies – especially her legendary cookies – for people she knew.
Karen always found time to work with various organizations. Her proudest accomplishment was the founding of “Operation Love”. Through this organization, she gave her time and her heart to he elderly who were confined to nursing homes and who had no families of their own. By providing needed gifts at Christmas, Karen was able to ease their loneliness during the holiday season. She also served in the PTA, the Junior Cotillion, PHS Booster Club, Odessa Life Underwriters and Crimestoppers.
Even though she was involved in many community activities, raising her three sons was what she considered her greatest accomplishment. The boys, in turn, honored their mom by nominating her for the Red Plate Award which was awarded to her by KOSA-TV. The standards for her boys and the expectations she set were quite high. However, she and her boys reaped the benefits because all three were in the Top Ten at Permian High School as well as the Hall of Fame. Karen became a proud Aggie Mom as she watched each of her sons graduate from Texas A&M University. She boldly bragged on them with her Aggie license plates of “92 95 98”.
Besides watching her three boys grow into fine men, she willingly accepted into her family, Steve’s two children, Jennifer and Joe, whom she loved as her own. Later, she celebrated two of her proudest moments with the birth of Jennifer’s children, Corbin and Jordan. Karen also is survived by her mother, Gloria, her brother, Dale, and her sister-in-law, Carolyn, who was like a sister to her.
Karen had once said her life was full and complete when she was able to watch all of her five children get married . Her quilt was complete when she experienced the birth of her two granddaughters. Karen will always be remembered as a loving wife, mother, daughter, grandmother, and friend.
Karen’s favorite thought for the day… “Hope is wishing for a thing to come true; faith is believing that it will come true. Believe that for every problem God will provide you with a solution.”
Karen R. Poynor, 57, of Odessa, died Monday, Sept. 13, 2004, at Memorial Hermann Southeast in Houston.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. today at Lutheran Church of the Risen Lord with the Rev. Chris Conner officiating.
She was born in Nampa, Idaho.
SURVIVORS: Husband, Steve Poynor; mother, Gloria Peterson of Meridian, Idaho; sons, Shane Jenson of Irving, Jarod Jenson of Pearland, Travis Jenson of Spring and Joe Poynor of San Antonio; daughter, Jennifer Martin of Stonewall; brother, Dale Peterson of Nampa; and four grandchildren.
