Douglas J. Ward
DALLAS — Douglas J. Ward, age 60, passed away Thursday, September 16, 2004, at the VA Medical Center in Dallas.
He was born August 18, 1944, to J. C. and Thula Ward in Wellington, TX. He married
Romelia Franco on January 28, 1996, in Las Vegas. He was a member of the American Quarter Horse Association, and enjoyed racing horses. He had been the manager at the Pro Shop in Monahans. He also served in the U.S. Army.
Survivors include his wife, Romelia Ward of Gardendale; two sons, Derek Ward of Gardendale, and Norman Ward of Lexington, Ky.; two daughters, Jennifer Eggers of Dodge City, Kan.; and Edith Garcia of Odessa; and six grandchildren.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Monday, September 20, 2004, at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. There will be a family visitation at 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 19, 2004, at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

Bill Joe Coskrey
“Peace in the Valley”
ODESSA — Bill Joe Coskrey passed away September 16, 2004. He was born in Gatesville, Texas, November 22, 1928, to Tom and Winnie Coskrey. Bill was a veteran of the United States Navy stationed aboard the USS Neches. He was an employee of Phillips Petroleum Company for 14 years and later opened B&B Hardware and B&B Auto Parts in West Odessa.
Bill is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara Ruth Coskrey; his mother-in-law, Blanche Carnes; and son, Rick Coskrey of the home; son, Billy Coskrey and wife, Stephanie, of Duncan, Oklahoma; and daughter, Karrie Emerson and husband, Tommy, of Odessa. Bill had five grandchildren, Ross and Krista Coskrey, Brett and Clay Emerson and the new addition of whom he was so proud to be able to see and hold, Ethan Cole Coskrey. Bill is also survived by his brother, Arch Coskrey and wife, Jerrine, of Fort Worth; and sister, Deen Bales of Odessa. He leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Visitation will be at Sunset Funeral Home from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, September 17, 2004. Services will be held at Northside Baptist Church in Odessa at 10 a.m. Saturday, September 18, 2004, with Pastor Clydel Chapman officiating. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Northside Baptist Church Building Fund at 100 W. 50th St., Odessa, Texas 79764.

Deloris ‘Poppy’ Pieper
MIDLAND — Deloris “Poppy” Pieper, 71, of Midland and formerly of Odessa, passed away Tuesday, September 14, 2004, at her residence.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today, September 17, 2004, at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Chapel in Midland with Reverend Jimmy Braswell officiating. Reverend James Otterness will assist. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park in Midland.
She was born January 21, 1933, in Seminole, Oklahoma, to Jake and Jewel (Walton) Harris. She was raised and attended schools in Seminole. Poppy and Travis Pieper were married
on March 24, 1979, in Odessa, Texas. She and Travis loved to travel. Poppy was a former Vice President at First Banker’s Trust in Midland for 22 years. She was a member of Midland Gem & Mineral Society and a member of the Midland Community Theatre. She had also volunteered for Meals on Wheels. Poppy was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Odessa.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Geneva Woolery; and a brother, Glen Harris. Surviving Poppy is her husband, Travis of Midland; two sons, Joe Aytia of Midland and Don and his wife, Janet Aytia, of Lead, South Dakota; two stepdaughters, Pamela and husband, Ron Kimbrell and Karen and husband, Doug Hildebrand; and a stepson, Paul and his wife, Joyce Pieper, all of Odessa; eight step-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren. She is further survived by a sister, Lavisa Gehring of Toledo, Ohio; numerous nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly, most especially, Debbie, Micah, Kevin and Skyla; and her close friend, Ann Hathaway.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Hospice of Midland, 911 W. Texas, Midland, TX 79701.

Federico Dominguez
ODESSA — Federico Dominguez, 93, of Odessa, passed away, September 20, 2004, at his residence. Mr. Dominguez was born November 10, 1910, to Pedro and Felicitas Dominguez in Presidio, Texas. In 1933, he married
Aurora Armendarez, his wife of 71 years, whom he leaves behind. Mr. Dominguez is also survived by his daughter, Ofelia Dominguez of Odessa; one brother, Juan Dominguez of Fort Stockton; six sisters, Tomasa Rey, Alicia Hernandez and Adela Gonzales, all of Fort Stockton, Ofelia Calderon of Milford, Texas, Gloria Byrd of Midland and Lallie Whitehead of Plano, Texas; and numerous, nieces and nephews.
Visitation for Mr. Dominguez will be today at Martinez Funeral Home from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. with a rosary being said at 7 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, September 22, 2004. at 2 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with Fr. Joe Uecker officiating. Interment will follow at the Ector County cemetery.

Dr. George A. Hoffman
FORT STOCKTON - One of the most unique and multidimensional individuals in West Texas, Dr. George A. Hoffman died Sunday morning at Pecos County Memorial Hospital in Fort Stockton at the age of 86. A civic-minded and service-oriented man all of his life, Dr. Hoffman was very active in numerous community affairs.
He practiced medicine in Fort Stockton from August 1951 until his retirement in August 1988. While serving many patients as a general practitioner, Dr. Hoffman delivered 1,771 babies, which is believed to be a record in the community.
Following a private committal (for the family only) at East Hill cemetery, a memorial funeral service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Fort Stockton at 10 a.m. today (Tuesday, Sept. 21), with the Rev. Dr. Jim Miles, pastor, officiating. Fort Stockton Funeral Home is in charge of all arrangements.
George Alonzo Hoffman was born in Marfa on May 17, 1918, to Dr. and Mrs. Arthur James Hoffman. His father was a longtime veterinarian in Presidio County and later operated an apple orchard near Fort Davis. His mother, Kate Giles Hoffman, was a noted West Texas artist, who lived in Fort Davis for many years after the death of her husband.
He attended Marfa Public Schools and was valedictorian of Marfa High School’s class of 1936.
The future doctor attended Sul Ross State Teachers College (as it was then known) and received a Bachelor of Science degree in biology with a chemistry minor in August 1942.
While attending Sul Ross, he met Jean Elizabeth Engle of Alpine. They were married
in Alpine on Nov. 27, 1943. Hoffman, who had been in the U.S. Navy Reserve since 1942, entered the Navy on active duty in January 1943, serving until January 1946.
For the first 2 1/2 years, he served as a deck officer on an A.P.A. attack transport ship in the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. His last assignment was as a gunnery officer on an A.K.A. attack transport in the Pacific Theater.
Upon discharge from the Navy as a lieutenant, at the end of World War II, he was then admitted to medical school at the University Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. He was graduated in May of 1950, and completed a rotating internship in John Sealy Hospital in Galveston for the next year.
The young couple, who by that time had one son, George Alan Hoffman, moved to Fort Stockton to begin medical practice.
Dr. Hoffman’s professional achievements and affiliations included the Texas and American Academies of Family Practice, beginning in 1955 and comprising 1,650 hours of post-graduate courses. He was chief of staff of Pecos County Memorial Hospital on several occasions, and was designated a Charter Fellow of the American Academy of Family Practice in 1974. He was a member of the Big Bend Counties Medical Society and the Texas Medical Society for the 37 years of his medical practice, beginning in 1951.
Dr. Hoffman, who had been a Methodist during his youth, became a Presbyterian after moving to Fort Stockton. He was chosen to serve as a deacon of the church in 1953 and as an elder in 1956.
In civic affairs, he served as president of the Fort Stockton Noon Lions Club, and was a member of the Chamber of Commerce and the Chamber Ambassadors. On the board of the Fort Stockton Historical Society for several years, he served that organization as vice president.
He was a member of the Fort Stockton School Board for 12 years, during an era of growth and expansion that included construction of several new schools.
Honors Dr. Hoffman received included selection by Who’s Who Among American Universities and Colleges in 1941-’42, life membership in the Parent Teachers Association, and an outstanding service award from the City of Fort Stockton for his work as City Health Officer.
He was chosen Outstanding Citizen of Fort Stockton in 1981 by the Chamber of Commerce.
From 1979 to 1988, Dr. Hoffman owned and operated an irrigated farm at Balmorhea, raising Simmental cattle and crops of alfalfa, Sudan, wheat and triticali.
He also was actively involved with an apple orchard near Fort Davis, in partnership with his sister and her husband, Anna and Ernest Teague.
His numerous hobbies included collection of flint projectile points, ornithology, woodworking, carving, stained glass and metal work.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Jean Engle Hoffman of Fort Stockton; three sons and daughters-in-law, James Stephan and Tiffany of Weatherford, David Glenn and Sharon of Waco and John William and Jan of Bellville; a sister, Anna Teague of Fort Davis; and 12 grandchildren.
Dr. Hoffman was preceded in death by his parents and oldest son, George Alan Hoffman.
The family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, memorial be made to the George Alan Hoffman Memorial Youth Fund, the Presbyterian Church or other charity of choice.
Marion Kaleta Power
ODESSA — Marion Kaleta Power, 74, of Odessa, died Sunday, September 19, 2004, at Regency Hospital. She was born March 4, 1930, in Dayton, Texas, to Louis and Nora Marshall.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, September 23, 2004, in the Chapel of Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Power was a member of The VFW Ladies Auxiliary - Life Members. She was also a member of First United Methodist Church.
She is survived by sons, Richard Power and wife, Tami, of Lancaster, Calif., and Stephen and wife, Stephanie, of Houston; grandchildren, Stephan Travis Power, Lauren Ashley, Colleen Rochelle and Christopher John; and great-grandchildren, Cameron Christopher and Olivia Ann.

Rosalia ‘Rosie’ Salgado
ODESSA — Rosalia “Rosie” Salgado, 85, of Odessa, passed into life eternal on September 17, 2004, at Hospice House in Odessa.
She was born March 19, 1919, in Shafter, Texas. She married
Tomas Salgado in 1938. He preceded her in death in 1978, as did her parents, Angel and Juanita Salgado; one brother, Juan Salgado; sisters, Manuela Trimble, Maria McConnell and Antonia Valenzuela; son, Juan Salgado and daughter, Sylvia Natividad.
She is survived by one sister, Avelina Portillo of Pomona, California; 10 children, Nellie S. Martinez of El Paso, Betty Tarin, Anna Mata, Lillie Ramirez, Rosalinda Munoz and Sally Gomez, all of Odessa, Henri Salgado of Crestview, Florida, Alfredo Salgado, Tom Salgado, both of Odessa and Hector Salgado of Albuquerque, N.M.; 35 grandkids; and 56 great-grandkids. Rosie was a homemaker, she was affectionately known by many.
Funeral services will be today at 2 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, with burial following at Ector County cemetery. Pallbearers will be Alfredo Salgado Jr., Greg Ramirez, Edward Ramirez, Louie S. Gomez, John Gomez and Esteban Munoz.

Dennis LeRoy Sik
WILNO, Minn. — Dennis LeRoy Sik died Saturday, September 18, 2004, at Odessa Medical Center from complications due to sudden illness.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 24, 2004, at St. John Cantius Catholic Church.
Dennis was born May 15, 1943, in Montevideo, Minn., to Martin and Lydia McCoy Sik. His elementary education was in rural schools south of Canby, where he lived as a child with his parents who were farmers and the owners and operators of the Marble Store and Garage. He attended Morris Agricultural School for one year; however, his real education came in the things he taught himself, such as mechanics and welding. He was also a skilled electrician, plumber, carpenter and cake decorator, as well as general all-around handyman. He could master any task he set out to accomplish.
On June 19, 1965, Dennis married
Patricia (Patty) Tyler at Wilno, Minnesota. They had 39 happy years together. Dennis and Patty lived in several areas, including Madison, South Dakota, Canby, Ortonville, Chandler, Slayton and Holdingford, Minnesota, before finding a home where they were needed and wanted in Valentine, Texas. For the past 23 years, they lived each August through May in Valentine and spent June and July with family and friends in South Dakota and Minnesota.
Throughout his life, Dennis enjoyed the salvage yard business, traveling and camping, car and tractor shows, attending auction sales, woodworking and being with family and good friends.
Dennis is survived by his wife, Patty; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Martin Sik; sister, Linda and husband, Kenny Hennen; brothers, David and wife, Judy, and Marvin and wife, Brenda. Also, in-laws, Bud and Doris Tyler; sister-in-law, Janice Mathison and husband, Jerry; several nieces and nephews; great-nieces and nephews; aunts and uncles and hundreds of good friends. Dennis is preceded in death by his son, Patrick LeRoy and his paternal and maternal grandparents.
Dennis had a heart of gold with warm and giving ways. He will always be remembered by those with whom he came into contact.
