Hazel Leota Bogard Brock
CHILLICOTHE — Hazel Leota Brock, 91, of Kermit, went to be with her Lord on Sunday, August 22, 2004, at her residence. She was born the 18th of September 1912, in Timpson, Shelby Co., Texas. She was the daughter of a farmer and schoolteacher, Cornelius Allen Bogard and his wife, Una Belle Kyle. The Bogards moved to West Texas, Vernon/Quanah area in 1920.
After graduating from Quanah High School, Quanah, Texas, in 1929, Hazel attended Ranger Junior College, Ranger, Texas, then taught grades one through seven for one year at Star Valley School, near Chillicothe, Texas.
In 1931, Hazel attended Texas Tech University at Lubbock for one semester until all of her students finished picking cotton and harvesting for the year and they returned to school. For four years, she taught at the Medicine Mound School in Medicine Mound, Texas, being the first teacher to be hired from the hometown area. She taught grades three and four for two years, then grades two and three for two years. After the School District began hiring only affiliated teachers, she went back to Star Valley and taught in the one teacher school again in 1935-36.
Hazel married
Leo Langford Brock on April 25, 1937, in Chillicothe, Texas. Their next several years were spent traveling with Leo’s job with Gulf Oil Company in seismograph, or “doodle bugging”, and having two daughters, Sandra Kaye and Celia Belle. After several years of moving from place to place with Leo’s work, Hazel returned to college in Crosby, North Dakota, where Leo was stationed. She was only allowed one semester there as Leo was transferred to Kansas, then on to Donaldsville, La. Hazel then attended classes at Nacogdoches, Texas, and earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in August 1955 from Stephen F. Austin University. She taught fourth grade in Kirbyville, Texas, during 1955-1956, then moved to Jasper, Texas, where she taught third grade for four years. Hazel received her Masters Degree in Education in August 1959 from Stephen F. Austin as Sandra finished High School in Jasper.
Leo retired from Gulf Oil and they moved to Kermit, Texas, in August 1960, near his sister Melba Carr, (Melba has since moved to California and passed away January 31, 2002). Hazel taught third grade in Kermit for four years, went to Sul Ross State Teachers University to earn her counselor’s certificate, and was Counselor at Kermit Junior High School for 15 years. She was Student Council Sponsor, administered commercial academic tests as well as aiding students with various tasks and problems.
Hazel loved her job, the students, her co-workers and staff. Her memories about her work with the students of Kermit have always been her favorite subject since retiring from the school system in 1975. She was a member of: Texas Classroom Teachers Assoc., KISD Retired Teachers Assoc., Lifetime member of Texas State Teachers Assoc., Volunteer/Member of Texas Youth Commission 1990, Eastern Star, Jasper, Texas, Delta Kappa Gamma, Kermit, Texas, National Retired Teachers Assoc. and Charter Member/Officer of the KISD Credit Union, aka Winkler County Credit Union.
Leo and Hazel had two daughters, Sandra Kaye Brock, who passed away in October 2000, from the neuromuscular disease, ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease. Sandra had also received her Bachelor of Science Degree at Stephen F. Austin and taught High School English until receiving her Masters Degree and assuming the position of Media Coordinator of the Keller School District, Keller, Texas. Sandra was married
and had three sons, Terry, Jamie and Jay Lucas. Terry and Jamie are both pilots for American Airlines and Jay is assistant manager of a door and window manufacturing company. Terry and his wife, Carol, and their three sons, Dustin, Daniel and Jacob, live near Denton as well as do Jamie and his wife, Michele, and daughters, Jessica and Jennifer. Weldon Lucas Jr. (Jay) lives in Corinth with his wife, Kimber, and sons, Kyle and Brock.
Their second daughter, Celia Belle Brock, married
Charles Ray Bolf and lives in Kermit. Celia received her Bachelor of Arts degree at UTPB in Odessa and teaches elementary school in Kermit. They have two sons. Thomas Bolf is manager of the Kermit office of Tessco Electric. He and his wife, Dina, and their two sons, Jerid and Jeremy, live in Kermit. Lang Bolf is an electrician for the City of Austin Power Company. Lang lives in Bastrop with his wife, Jeanette, stepson, Bradley Sutton and Lang’s son, Marcus. Another stepson, Justin Sutton, lives in Midland.
Hazel has been a loving influence to all of her family and we will remember her patience, concern and sincerity about each person’s life that she touched. May God bless Hazel and receive her into his Kingdom.
Those left behind to cherish Hazel’s love and memories are her daughter, Celia Bolf and husband, Charles, of Kermit, Texas.; two brothers, Alton Bogard of Midwest City, Okla., and Herschel Bogard of Anniston, Ala.; two sisters, Lois Poissoit of Conroe, Texas, and Stella Sims of Arlington, Texas; five grand sons: Thomas Bolf and wife, Dina, of Kermit, Texas, Lang Bolf and wife, Jeanette, of Bastrop, Texas, Terry Lucas and wife, Carol, of Aubrey, Texas, Jamie Sim and wife, Michele, of Crossroads, Texas, and Jay Lucas and wife, Kimber, of Corinth, Texas; thirteen great-grandchildren, Jerid and Jeremy Bolf of Kermit, Texas, Daniel and Jacob Lucas of Aubrey, Texas., Dustin Lucas of Weatherford, Texas, Jessica and Jennifer Lucas of Crossroads, Texas, Kyle and Jay Brock of Corinth, Texas, Justin Sutton of Midland, Texas., Bradley Sutton and Marcus Bolf, both of Bastrop, Texas, and Ashton Prather of Kermit, Texas.
Hazel was preceded in death by her husband, Leo Langford Brock, in 1989.
Funeral service was held at First United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. Monday, August 23, 2004, with the Rev. Loren Gardner officiating. Concluding service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, August 24, 2004, at Chillicothe cemetery in Chillicothe, Texas, with the Rev. Bud Kidwell officiating.
Arrangements are entrusted to Family Services Funeral Parlor of Kermit, Texas.
George Dale Johnston
ODESSA — George Dale Johnston, 55, of Odessa, passed away August 22, 2004, at his residence.
He was born Jan. 1, 1949, in Atoka, Oklahoma. Military memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, August 25, 2004, at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home Chapel.
Mr. Johnston served in the Marine Corps during the Vietnam war from which he received a purple heart service medal for combat action. He was an employee of Key Trucking.
He is survived by his wife, Lorene Johnston of Odessa; four sisters, Pat Thompson of Leigh, Oklahoma and Verna Anderson, Paulette Blair and Nancy Basile, all of Odessa; one son; three stepsons; three daughters-in-law; 10 grandchildren; and a mess of friends.
Services are entrusted to Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.

‘Jeannie’ Miles
ODESSA — “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith; Henceforth there is laid out for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day; and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.” II Timothy 4:7-8.
Jeannie Miles went to be with her Lord on Friday, Aug. 20, 2004, at Regency Hospital in Odessa. She was 74.
Jeannie was born Oct. 23, 1929, in Robert Lee, Texas, to James Lawrence and Willie Louise Cochran. She moved to Odessa as a teenager and graduated from Odessa High School in 1948. She met Wilburn Miles at the Henderson Drug Store, and they married
on Aug. 23, 1948. They shared nearly 56 years together. Jeannie worked as a tax preparer and bookkeeper and ran Miles Income Tax Service.
Jeannie was a voracious reader. She read anything from classics to the Reader’s Digest. However she was most avid about reading her Bible. When it came to Bible knowledge, she had the edge on anyone around. She held longtime membership at Crescent Park Baptist Church. Jeannie was a great caretaker. Selflessly, she devoted her life to care for all those around her. However, a few years ago, when she suffered a stroke, Jeannie found herself on the receiving end of her years of caring and kindness. Although she was appreciative, the role reversal left her a bit agitated.
Jeannie’s parents; and her brother, Don Wesley Cochran Sr., preceded her in death.
Jeannie is survived by her husband, Wilburn Miles of Odessa; son, Buddy Miles and wife Keeney of Odessa; daughters, Lynne Norwood and husband Donnie of Odessa, Mary Gail Glover and husband Rickey of Brownwood and Deborah Foster of Odessa; brothers, Gary Cochran and wife Connie of Jasper, Gayle Cochran and James L. Cochran Jr. and wife Kathleen, all of Odessa; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren
The family will receive visitors from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors. Services will be held on at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 24, 2004, at Crescent Park Baptist Church with Dr. Johnny Dickerson officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Mary Reynolds
ODESSA — Mary Reynolds, 77, of Odessa, passed away Sat., Aug. 21, 2004, at her residence.
She was born July 28, 1927, in Altus, Okla., to Frank and Edna Wise Coe. She enjoyed sports and played basketball in high school. Mary had been in Odessa since 1989 and was a member of Park View Church of Christ.
Survivors include, one son, Danny Max Reynolds of Austin, Texas; two daughters, Connie and husband, Albert Parrott, of Lake Jackson, Texas, and Debbie and husband, Jon Willson, of Midland, Texas; sister; Patsy Dial of Garland, Texas; 6 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Jim Coe; and two sisters, Francis Connell and Betty Haynie.
Funeral services have been scheduled for 2 p.m., Wed., Aug. 24, 2004, at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home with Bro. Dennis Dillon officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Honorary Pallbearers will be Chris Parrott, Brian Jones, Chris Bryant, Ricky Connell and Robert Prentiss.
Memorials may be made to Odessa Christian School.

W. Neal Collins
FORT WORTH — W. Neal Collins, 73, died peacefully Saturday afternoon, Aug. 21, 2004, at a local care center.
A service at the grave was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Following committal services, Neal was laid to rest next to his mother, Hazel, in Greenwood Memorial Park.
Those desiring, please make memorial contributions in Mr. Collins’ name to the Alzheimer’s Foundation or to a charity of choice.
Born in Los Angeles, Calif., Nov. 30, 1930, Wallace Neal Collins was the son of Colenell Wallace and Hazel Marie Neal Collins. He had lived in Fort Worth since 1971.
Neal served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a member of Edge Park United Methodist Church. An avid fisherman and golfer, he was a former member of Glen Garden Country Club.
His family wishes to express appreciation to the nurses and staff at Garden Terrace, who cared for Neal so lovingly these past several years.
Mr. Collins was preceded in death by his father, Wallace, who died in 1952; and his mother, Hazel, who died in 1994.
Survivors include cousins, L. Alvin Neal Jr. and his wife, Faith Ann, of Crowley, Valerie Williams and her husband, Tony, and their children, of Joshua, Todd Neal and his wife, Lisa, and their children, of Hurst, Drew Neal and his wife, Amy, and their children, of Burleson, Craig Neal of Grapevine, Stephanie Brownlow and her husband, Andrew, and their children, of Colleyville, Bill Landreth and his wife, Gail, and their children, of Fort Worth, Linda Shropshire and her husband, Grady, of Fort Worth and Jane Russell of Arizona.
Don Doughten
ODESSA — Don Doughten, 74, a longtime resident of Odessa, passed away Tuesday, August 24, 2004, at Medical Center Hospital. He was born January 23, 1930, in Eldorado, Okla. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He worked 30 years for El Paso Products. He was a charter member of Sherwood Church Of Christ. He married
Marilyn June Fritz August 25, 1994, in Odessa.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jane Doughten, in 1993; his parents; two sisters; and two brothers.
Don was called Papa by his family, and he is survived by his wife, Marilyn Fritz Doughten of Odessa; son, Kevin Doughten and wife, Robbie, and their children, Elisha, Laura and Robert of Buda, Texas; daughter, Debbie Marrs and husband, Tony, and their children, Kelly and Kaci of Odessa; stepson, Fred Fritz and children, Tanis, Deeon, Morgana and Ian of Virginia Beach, Va.; stepdaughter, Jenna Jarvis and husband, Rick, and their children, Zane and Gil of Odessa.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Thursday, August 26, 2004, at Sherwood Church of Christ with Lynn Money officiating. Interment followed at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Noma Jean Lingle
ODESSA — Noma Jean Lingle, 52, of Gardendale, passed away Wednesday, August 25, 2004, at Medical Center Hospital after a short illness. She was born February 15, 1952, in Gorman, Texas. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
She is survived by her husband, Jesse Lingle of Gardendale; son, Cory Lingle and wife, Terri, of Fort Worth; daughter, Melisa Price and husband, Johnny, of Grapevine; brothers, John Kimbrough and Ted Kimbrough both of Odessa and James Kimbrough of Farmington, N.M.; and granddaughter, Leslie Lingle.
There will be a visitation from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, August 27, 2004, at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

Shizuko ‘Seesue’ Fujimoto Shintani
CHICAGO — Shizuko “Seesue” Fujimoto Shintani died August 20, 2004, in Chicago, Illinois, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. Seesue was born November 14, 1916, in Pasadena, California.
She married
Victor Haruo Shintani March 4, 1944.
Her husband, Victor, precedes her in death; her parents, Katsumo and Tamihei Fujimoto; brother, Mas Fujimoto; and grandson, Christopher Haverback.
Seesue is survived by daughter, Patsy Shintani Cohen of Odessa, Texas; daughter, Marsha Steffen and Dave Semler of Lake Forrest, Illinois, and daughter, Lori Haverback of Kewanee, Illinois. Two brothers, Yo Fujimoto and Tamio and Fujimoto of California; granddaughter, Jackie Haverback; brother-in-law, Munro Shintani of Odessa, Texas; and many nieces and nephews.
Services will be at Christ Church of Chicago on Friday, August 27, 2004. Arrangements are being handled by Smith-Corcoran Funeral Home. Burial will be Saturday, August 28, 2004, at Elmlawn cemetery in Elmhurst, Illinois.
The family is asking for donations in lieu of flowers to the Alzheimer’s Association.
