Roy Davis Bennett Jr.
ANDREWS — Roy Davis Bennett Jr. was born to Roy Davis Bennett Sr. and Neva Christine Bennett on May 5, 1944, in Oklahoma City.
He passed from this life into the hands of the Lord on Aug. 25, 2004. He died in the Veterans Hospital in Tucson, Ariz. Roy D. had resided in Arizona for the past five years. He died from complications due to diabetes.
Roy Davis Bennett, know as Roy D. to his friends and family, moved in 1946 to Andrews, Texas, and he completed all of his schooling in Andrews — graduating from Andrews High School in 1962. He attended Lubbock Christian College and graduated from Oklahoma Christian College with a degree in History.
Soon after graduation, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and left for Vietnam. While in Vietnam he was exposed to Agent Orange. After service he went back to Oklahoma City working in Real Estate and Physical Therapy. He resided there for many years and made many friends, but he soon realized he was in very bad health and began to look for a place for treatment. After much research he settled in Tucson, Ariz., and felt it was the best Veterans Hospital in the country. This hospital was a blessing in his life. He made many friends there, both veterans and others that helped him maintain some normalcy in his life. Roy D. worked very hard in the Veterans Association there. He helped many get their disability settlements. He was also a very political person and loved his Democratic Party and worked very hard with the Democratic Party in Tucson. He became acquainted with Sen. John McCain, who helped him finally receive a Service Connected Disability. He would laugh and say “A Republican Finally Helped Me.”
Roy D. had many old friends in Andrews. One of his faithful friends was with him the day he passed from this earth. Jerry Duley was his Earthly Angel, and our family wants to personally tell him “Thank You.” Jerry went way beyond the call of duty. Two other friends that were good to him and checked on him daily were Roger King and Tom French, both of Tucson, Ariz.
The other love in Roy’s life was his church home. He was an active member in the East Bieu Church of Christ in Tucson. Don and Evelyn Avers and Bill and Carolyn Elliott also helped with his care. He went to church as often as he could, and he loved the Lord. He can now see and walk without pain and his family and friends rejoice.
He was preceded in death by his father, Roy Davis Bennett Sr. and a niece, Virginia Christine Hoffman.
He is survived by his loving and wonderful Mother, Neva Christine Bennett of Andrews; two sisters, Phyliss Bain and husband Bill of Shreveport, La., and Ellen Hoffman and husband Don of Andrews, Texas. He is also survived by three nephews, Billy Bain Jr. and Bradley Bain of Louisiana and Bryan Hoffman of Andrews; two nieces, Deborah McBride of Louisiana and Angela Porter of Andrews.
Again, we would like to thank the many friends that prayed for our beloved Roy D. and again a Special Thank You to Jerry for all you did for him.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug., 30, 2004, at McNett’s Funeral Home Chapel in Andrews, Texas, with Mark Wilson officiating.
