Vernon R. Branscum
ODESSA - Vernon R. Branscum of Odessa passed away Thursday, December 9, 2004, after a lengthy illness. He was born February 22, 1928, in Artesia, New Mexico, to James Richard and Chloa Branscum. He was the sixth of eight children.
Seaman 1st Class Branscum joined the U.S. Navy and proudly defended his country in the Pacific theater during WWII, serving on both the USS Bosque and the USS Vulcan. He was a member of the first U.S. occupational troops to Hiroshima, Japan after the bomb was dropped. He remained proud of his service to this country to the end. Upon his discharge he moved to Odessa, where he met Lucille Boland. Their first date was on April 16, 1947, and they were married
on January 6, 1948, sharing the next fifty-six years side-by-side.
Together they had five children, sixteen grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. Vernon worked in the oilfields of West Texas and was well known as a Caser and Field Representative for Red’s Casing Crews.
Vernon will be remembered for the love he had for everyone he knew. Vernon always had a song in his heart and would sing for anyone who would sit and listen. He loved to Bar-B-Q and he loved making milk shakes for his grandkids.
More than anything Vernon loved his family, each and every one. He was preceded in death by his son, James Kelly Branscum. Vernon is survived by his wife, Lucille; daughter, Karen May and her husband, Marc; daughter, Diane Wright and her husband, Eddie; daughter, Linda Miller and her husband, Charlie; and son, Stacy Branscum and his wife, Diana. He is also survived by his sixteen grandchildren, Brian Hamilton, Trey Shelton, Travis Miller, Tamara Shelton, Chad May, Jon Wright, Amanda Branscum, Bonnie Branscum, Clayton Miller, Natasha Branscum, Dustin Branscum, J.R. Branscum, Megan May, Macy May, Laura Catherine Branscum, and Tricia Branscum. Vernon’s great-grandchildren are Kelly Allen, Joshua, Josiah, Dylan, Coby, Madison, Skylar, Blane, Adam, Noah, Makaila, Morgan, Breanne and Katlyn. Vernon is also survived by three sisters, Opal Self of Odessa, Naoma Welch of Burnet, TX, and Shirley Johnson of Austin, TX. He passed in peace with the loving care of Odyssey Hospice.
Services are scheduled for Sunday, December 12, 2004, at 2 p.m. in the Sunset Memorial Gardens Chapel with Reverend Jay Mayo officiating.
Erma Nell Haswell
CRANE - Erma Nell Haswell, 87 of Crane, died Thursday, Dec. 9, 2004, at Alliance Hospital in Odessa.
Funeral Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 13, 2004, at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Larry Krueger officiating. Burial will be at the Crane County cemetery with arrangements under the direction of Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home.
Erma was born April 5, 1917, in Ola, Ark. She moved to Crane from Ada, Okla., in March 1955. She married
Alford “Doc” Haswell on Sept. 6, 1976, in Crane. She worked for many years as a clerk for the T&P Clothiers in Crane. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church where she was a member of the U.M.W. and the Chancel Choir. She was also a member of the Rebekah Lodge number 92.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Alford “Doc” Haswell; father, Arthur McKinley Carter; mother, Edna Foster Carter; sons, Randy Massey and Jimmy Massey; and brother, Bobby Carter.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Terry and Eyvonne Palmer of Brownfield; three sisters, Wilma Asendorf of Ada, Okla., Louene and husband Bob Scarsdale of Talequah, Okla., and Sue and husband Bill Norris of Bullard, Texas; daughter-in-law, Marie Massey of Crane; three grandchildren; Randall Massey of Crane, Ginger and Brian Jones of Keller, Texas, and Marisa Massey of Crane; five great-grandchildren; Marq Massey, Connor Massey and Cailynn Cavazos, all of Crane, and Jordan Miller and Easton Jones, both of Keller, Texas; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Dr. Stanley Eugene Lassa
ODESSA - Stanley E. Lassa, O.D., 74, of Odessa, died Wednesday, December 8, 2004.
He was born May 6, 1930, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Stanley W. Lassa and Clara Lassa, who both preceded him in death. He married
Dolores M. Eddleman on November 1, 1950.
Stanley served his country during the Korean War as a yeoman to the Commander of the 9th Naval District. After his discharge from the U.S. Navy, he started his college education at Cleveland State University receiving a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and then furthered his education at Case Western Reserve with a Master’s degree in Marketing. At the age of 40, he went back to school and received his Doctorate of Optometry from the University of Houston. After graduating, he moved his family to Odessa and began his optometry practice for 28 years at Texas State Optical but is now Lassa Optical Co.
Stanley is survived by his wife, Dolores M. Lassa; son, Dr. Lawrence Lassa; daughter; Laura and husband, Gary Callendar; two grandchildren, Courtney and Brandon Callendar, both of Odessa; and aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. John Grabowski of Cleveland, Ohio.
He will be remembered as a wonderful husband, father and grandfather and will be missed by all that knew him.
A rosary has been scheduled for 7 p.m. today at the Sunset Memorial Gardens Chapel. Funeral services have been scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday, December 13, 2004, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church with Father Ed Vrazel and Father Mark Woodruff officiating. Military entombment with VFW will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens cemetery.

Flora Franco Navarrete
COYAME, CHIHUAHUA, Mexico - Flora Franco Navarrete, 74, of Odessa, died Dec. 3, 2004, in Chihuahua City. She was born Aug. 13, 1930, in Coyame, Chihuahua, Mexico, to Crespin Franco and Louisa Navarrete.
Mrs. Franco was a retired schoolteacher from Chihuahua. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004, in Coyame, Chihuahua, Mexico.
She is survived by her two sons, Jaime and wife, Rosario, and Juan Oscar and wife, Criselda; daughters, Yamina and husband, Ismael, all of Odessa, and Maria de Los Angeles and husband, Miguel, of Chihuahua City; four brothers, Raul Franco and Baldomero Franco, both of Coyame and Pablo Franco and Crespin Franco, both of Odessa; three sisters, Estela F. Ramirez of Coyame and Aurora F. Ramos and Olga F. Carrillo, both of Odessa; 14 grandkids; and 10 great-grandkids.
Gertrude Nose
Odessa - Gertrude Nose, age 97, passed away Friday, Dec. 10, 2004, in Denison, Texas.
She was born May 13, 1907, to Bunk Riley and Rosie Sessums in Oklahoma. She was the owner and operator of an apartment complex in Odessa for 60 years before retiring.
She is preceded in death by her husbands, Rex Rodgers Sr., in 1977, and Ray Nose in 1993; her parents, Bunk and Rose Sessums; a daughter, Vivian Louise Miller; and one grandchild.
Survivors include her sons, Rex Rodgers Jr. of Denison, Texas, and Jack Rodgers of Odessa; siblings, Barbara Stearns of Argyle, Texas, Maxine Barraza of Phoenix, Ariz., Wallace Sessums of Silverton, Ore., Oscar Young of Earlsboro, Okla., and Wanda Parks and Juanita Bollinger, both of Atwood, Okla.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 13, 2004, at Hubbard-Kelly Chapel. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
